[ECOLOG-L] Seeking rapid input on name for DDIG redux
A group of us have been engaged in discussions for a replacement to the DDIG program that was recently cut by NSF. We need your input rapidly on one CRITICAL aspect of this -- what to call the nascent thing. I favour the word consortium, defined as *“A consortium is an association of two or more individuals, companies, organizations or governments (or any combination of these entities) with the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their resources for achieving a common goal.”* You can help us by contributing your reactions to different potential names and ideas for better ones in this shared document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r6hNfoo8gUdhLRIom9SQ-YH_zbWzUw4AYR4O3vpbFUU/edit?usp=sharing *Instructions* 1. Please edit the document directly rather than using "suggesting mode" or comments -- these make it too hard to read. 2. Please forward this email to potentially interested colleagues who may not be on this email list. If you can do this today, I would greatly appreciate it! Very best wishes to all, Maren -- -- Maren L. [ECOLOG-L] Postdoc: Plant-Diazotroph Interactions, Wash. State U.
Postdoc Positions in Plant-Diazotroph Interactions The Friesen lab is moving to Washington State University Fall 2017 to continue to pursue research at the intersection of genomics, evolution, and ecology using plant-diazotroph interactions as a model system. Postdoctoral positions are available with the possibility of contributing to ongoing projects in legume-rhizobia and grass-associative nitrogen fixer interactions, with the expectation that applicants will simultaneously: • engage in interdisciplinary research • develop independent lines of inquiry • apply for independent funding • contribute to collaborative proposal preparation • contribute to a collaborative and inspiring lab environment Solid training in (at least one of) evolution, ecology, plant biology, microbiology, modeling and/or genomics is desired, with demonstrated facility in quantitative methods and written communication. The lab has access to excellent facilities at WSU for plant growth, phenomics, and genomics, and there are nifty opportunities for outreach, including but not limited to evolutionary video game development. Please contact me (maren.l.frie...@gmail.com) with (i) CV and (ii) brief statement of interest; I will be at ESA 2017 if you'd like to meet up to chat about opportunities in person. Thanks for your interest! Maren L. Friesen http://friesen.plantbiology.msu.edu/ http://plantpath.wsu.edu/people/faculty/friesen/ -- -- Maren L. [ECOLOG-L] Postdoc: MichiganStateU. Ecological Genomics
Postdoc in Plant Transcriptomics and Microbiome Analysis The Friesen Lab in the Department of Plant Biology at Michigan State University is seeking a highly motivated individual to contribute to data analysis and manuscript preparation for two funded projects investigating the transcriptomic connections linking plant-plant competition and plant- microbiome interactions in legumes (collaborative with Sharon Strauss at UC Davis) and grasses (collaborative with Sarah Evans, Lisa Tiemann, and Jim Cole at MSU). Key qualifications include a strong statistical and computational background with the ability to ask creative questions. Familiarity with Illumina data and bioinformatics is desired but not essential. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required along with a track record of timely publications. Funding is initially available for one year with renewal based upon performance. The successful applicant would be encouraged to develop independent lines of research in accordance with an individualized mentoring plan. The Friesen lab is located in the Molecular Plant Sciences building which is designed to foster collaboration. Please send a ~1 page statement of interest, CV, and contact info for 3 references to mfrie...@msu.edu I will be attending the ESA meeting in Baltimore next week--drop me a line if you'd like to meet in person. [ECOLOG-L] Postdoc: Mich. State Nitrogenase Microbiology Genomics
Nitrogen is one of the most limiting nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems. A new joint project between the Friesen lab at Michigan State University and the Rutherford Buck labs at Imperial College London seeks to isolate and characterize microbes with novel biological nitrogen-fixation capabilities. A talented and collaborative individual is sought to join the Friesen lab as a postdoc to contribute to this project. Desired skills include microbiology, biochemistry, and genetics/genomics. The position will be located at MSU in East Lansing, MI, with opportunities to participate in field collections and collaborative stays in London. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop independent lines of research and will benefit from an egalitarian and highly interactive lab environment. Start date is flexible. Please send CV and ~1-page statement of research interests to mfrie...@msu.edu I will be attending the ESA meeting next week--please drop me a line if you'd like to meet in person. === Maren L. [ECOLOG-L] Survey: When is a mutualist a cheater?
What does it mean to be a cheater? We are a NCEAS working group exploring the significance of cheating in mutualisms and we'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Please fill out our very short (~5 minute) web survey. Your responses will be anonymous and will help create a more representative description of how the scientific community approaches these questions. We hope to hear from a variety of disciplinary perspectives as well as academics, graduate students, and professionals. The survey can be found at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform? formkey=dGMwNVVxd0lFR2xYTFlacUNnNVpMMFE6MQ#gid=0 Thanks for considering this. Any questions? [ECOLOG-L] Micro RFID chips for individual tracking?
Has anyone used micro RFID chips for tracking individuals? I have found 0.5mm square chips with unique IDs on the Hitachi website but have not been able to locate a distributor. I want to track seed pods that are ~1cm in diameter. Thanks in advance, Maren maren.l.frie...@gmail.com
