Natural Resource Specialist II (District Resource Management Assistant)

District Resource Management Assistant - Incumbent will assist the District 
Resource Specialist with implementation of resource management projects across 
State Park District 4, which includes Bear Creek Lake, High Bridge Trail, 
Holliday Lake, Pocahontas, Powhatan, Sailor's Creek Battlefield, and Twin Lakes 
State Parks.  The position will be based at Pocahontas State Park in 
Chesterfield County, Virginia.  Position will require daily travel and 
occasional overnight travel.

Primary duties will be to assist resource management staff in performing 
resource management activities including water quality monitoring, invasive 
species treatment, prescribed burns, vegetation surveys, permanent monitoring 
plot establishment, trail design and construction, monitoring for insect pests, 
wildlife management, and long term land management planning and implementation. 
 Position will also provide state park/system-wide support in data management 
using ESRI ArcMap 10.  This position will also be responsible for supervising a 
crew of three or more individuals working to build new trails and repair 
existing trails, as well as complete other natural resource related projects.

Wage positions are limited to working 1500 hours in a 12 month period from May 
1 to April 30. No benefits are associated with wage positions.

DCR is currently seeking candidates for a Natural Areas Steward position 
located in east-central Virginia. This position is part of a team of natural 
areas stewards managing the state natural area preserve system that protects 
outstanding examples of Virginia's natural communities and provides habitat for 
rare plants and animals. This position is located in Richmond, Virginia.
Responsibilities include: Leading natural areas management activities on eight 
preserves in the Chesapeake Bay Region of Virginia. Specific duties include 
developing and implementing preserve management plans, executing invasive 
species management strategies and implementing control actions, monitoring rare 
species populations and natural community condition status, developing 
interpretive signs, monitoring effects of public use on natural heritage 
resources, conducting interpretive field trips, working with volunteers, and

Qualifications: Working experience or knowledge of natural resource management 
and conservation of rare species. Experience with botany, plant ecology, avian 
ecology, invasive species control, pesticide application, prescribed burning, 
trail maintenance, public-use monitoring, boat operations and volunteer 
coordination. Strong skills in oral and written communication, organization and 
problem solving. Proficiency with personal computer applications including word 
processing, spreadsheets and databases. Ability to collect data and navigate 
terrain using global positioning systems (GPS) and to conduct analysis and 
produce maps with geographic information system (GIS) software such as ArcGIS. 
Proven ability to supervise contractors, volunteers and temporary employees and 
experience in administrating projects including budgeting and planning. Ability 
to travel frequently and work independently. Bachelor's degree preferred in 
natural resources, wildlife, forest or coastal resources management, or a 
related field. Individual is required to have or have the ability to obtain a 
valid Virginia driver's license and certifications in CPR and First Aid and 
pesticide application.

Housing is provided in the Mountain House Headquarters located at 17405 
Beverley Mill Drive, Broad Run, Virginia 20137 at the foot of the Bull Run 
Mountains. The position requires a responsible person to occupy the caretaking 
apartment and to perform a security presence on BRMC's Mountain House property. 
This includes managing the building's fire and burglary alarm system, as well 
as visual and actual security of the building after hours. Maintaining an 
orderly and clean resident apartment and a professional standard for the BRMC 
headquarters constitutes the Caretaker's responsibilities.

The position requires 15 hours conducting the above tasks per week, including 
weekend hours. Utilities are not included. The one-bedroom residence has a 
bottom and top floor and has its own entrance. BRMC has washer/dryer that can
