Disturbance Ecology in Central Appalachia NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Eastern Kentucky University Eastern Kentucky University is seeking applicants for a summer REU program. The theme of the research is disturbance ecology. Students will work at Lilley Cornett Woods, a field station with old-growth forest in eastern Kentucky, and in Daniel Boone National Forest. This is a 10-week program running from May 20 – July 26, 2019. Research projects for summer 2019 include studies of stream salamanders, aquatic invertebrates, copperheads, migratory birds, black bears, flying squirrels, water quality, old-growth forest, and GIS. Students will be paired with faculty mentors and work closely with agency professionals. Students will develop research skills including communication, data collection and management, analysis, and writing, while also learning to work in remote field locations. Students will also participate in professional development workshops and recreational trips. Student benefits include a stipend of $5250, housing, a food allowance, travel costs to and from EKU, research travel during the summer, and research supplies. To be eligible, students must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident and an undergraduate graduating no earlier than Fall 2019. We especially encourage applications from underrepresented minorities, veterans, persons with disabilities, first generation college students, financially disadvantaged students, and students from colleges with limited research opportunities. Greetings, The Eastern Kentucky University Division of Natural Areas is excited to have an open Environmental Education AmeriCorp position available for up to two years (more pending funding). The applicant will work closely with Natural Areas staff and students to assist in running our established environmental education programming for school groups and to develop new educational initiatives. Additionally, s/he will assist in marketing and communication and will complete the Professional Environmental Educator Certification Course. Programming will occur at each of our field stations: Maywoods Environmental and Educational Laboratory, Lilley Cornett Woods Appalachian Ecological Research Station, and Taylor Fork Ecological Area. These internships are funded by a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates award, Disturbance Ecology in Central Appalachia. Our research mentors represent multiple scientific fields and approaches, so students will be able to choose from a diversity of projects. Wetland Technician The technician will manage a 2-year, grant funded project to conduct wetland condition assessments throughout the state of Kentucky. Responsibilities will include organizing and supervising field sampling trips, conducting wetland condition surveys, and using GPS and ArcMap to locate and map wetland sites. Additional duties include: maintaining an archive of data, analyzing data, and communicating results. Applicant must be able to endure strenuous field work (i.e. hiking, wading, digging) in all weather conditions. The technician will work directly for Eastern Kentucky University’s Department of Biological Sciences with a team of wetland scientists, and interact with agency scientists. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least 2 years of experience, Master’s degree preferred. Salary range: $30,000-36,000. Assistant Professor Community Ecology The Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University is accepting applications for a Community Ecologist at the rank of Assistant Professor. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position to begin 15 August 15 2013. Teaching responsibilities will include courses at the undergraduate and graduate (MS) levels. Primary courses to be taught include an introductory course in ecology and evolution, community ecology, and other courses within the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an active research program that includes mentoring undergraduate and master's level students. Requirements include a Ph.D. from a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution.
