We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive individual to join our team as an 
Editorial Assistant.

The Editorial Assistant will provide administrative support to the Executive 
Editor, Managing Editor and colleagues in the publication of the journals New 
Phytologist and Plants, People, Planet. This diverse role will allow the role 
holder to be involved in the peer-review, production, promotion and development 
of the journals published by the New Phytologist Trust, a not-for-profit 
organisation based at Lancaster University and part of Lancaster Environment 
Centre.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for plant science, 
excellent English language skills, good organisational skills, and a flair for 
teamwork. This post offers an excellent opportunity to join a vibrant journal 
team at an exciting and innovative time for the publishing industry. The post 
is to be based at Lancaster University and is available immediately.

Salary: £22,017 to £25,482

The deadline for applying for this year's New Phytologist Tansley Medal is 
approaching - apply by 1 November!

· The New Phytologist Tansley Medal is awarded annually in recognition 
of an outstanding contribution to plant science.

· This is a global competition open to all plant scientists in the 
early stages of their career. This includes student and post-doctoral 
researchers with up to five years' experience since gaining their PhD. Career 
breaks do not count towards this five year period.

· Selection is a two-stage process based on a single-author Tansley 
insight review paper, intended for publication.

· All competition papers that are accepted after peer review will be 
published in New Phytologist and the Tansley Medal winner selected by judges 
from these final papers.

The biology of wood: from cell to trees

Wood biology research has traditionally been approached by discipline-specific 
questions and approaches, but recently the need and power of integrative 
approaches is becoming apparent. This symposium will bring together diverse 
researchers from different aspects of wood biology research including 
anatomists, biochemists, cell biologists, ecologists, geneticist / genomicists, 
and physiologists.



This symposium aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas and foster new 
collaborations across disciplines. We will also challenge speakers to put forth 
their vision for future research, including outstanding questions and 
interdisciplinary approaches by which they could be addressed.



The symposium will take place over three days at the Granlibakken Resort at 
Lake Tahoe in California. The symposium will be organised into sessions by 
research topics, there will be dedicated time for discussions, posters, 
selected poster talks, a conference dinner and a field trip.

The 41st New Phytologist Symposium will provide new insights into the 
evolutionary forces and molecular mechanisms that govern plant development and 
physiology, and their interactions with biotic and abiotic cues.
Invited speakers from the New Phytologist Editorial Board will highlight 
emerging topics in plant sciences as well as the application of modern 
technologies to capture the complex mechanisms driving plant development, 
physiology, interactions and evolution.
Eighteen leading scientists will speak at the symposium along with early career 
researchers, selected to give talks following submission of poster abstracts.

Calling all early career plant scientists!

The New Phytologist Tansley Medal is awarded annually in recognition of an 
outstanding contribution to plant science by an individual in the early stages 
of their career (student and post-doctoral researchers with up to five years’ 
experience since gaining / defending their PhD are eligible).

The winner will receive £2000 (GBP) and will author a short Tansley insight 
review to be published in New Phytologist, accompanied by an Editorial 
announcing the winner and finalists. The application deadline for this year’s 
Tansley Medal is 1 November 2017. Apply at

The Tansley Medal award is an opportunity to recognise outstanding scientists 
in the early stages of their careers, and supporting the next generation of 
plant scientists is one of the main activities of the New Phytologist Trust.
