[ECOLOG-L] PhD opportunity for candidates from developing countries - Spatial ecology and wildlife conservation

2018-12-04 Thread Alessio Mortelliti
*Spatial ecology and wildlife conservation:*The Department of Wildlife,
Fisheries, and Conservation Biology at the University of Maine has a
Dirigo Conservation Science Fellowship opportunity for a PhD student
with strong quantitative skills to undertake research at the interface
of spatial ecology and wildlife conservation. One topic would involve
examining how tree distribution and seed productivity influence space
use and population dynamics of small mammals. Analyses would be
conducted on a unique 35-year dataset focused on small mammals, trees,
and seed abundance collected in the Holt forest
(https://holtforest.org/).Other potential opportunities could include
the influence of habitat fragmentation (e.g., subdivision by roads) on
the distribution of vertebrates in Maine forests. The ideal candidate
would have strong quantitative skills and experience with working with R
software. Experience with GIS software would be an advantage. The
competition is restricted to candidates from developing countries (see a
list at
https://www.isi-web.org/index.php/resources/developing-countries) who
have substantial stipend support from another source, such as a
Fulbright Scholarship or similar fellowship. Dirigo Fellowship support
would include tuition and insurance, $1000 per year for professional
development (e.g., attending conferences), up to $5000 per year for
research expenses, and a stipend ($22,000), for one or two years beyond
the period of existing support (up to four years total).

The PhD student will be co-supervised by Dr. Alessio Mortelliti
(http://alessiomortelliti.weebly.com) and Dr. Malcolm Hunter
(https://umaine.edu/wle/faculty-staff-directory/malcolm-l-hunter-jr/).Expected
start of work: September 2019. If you are interested please send: 1)
curriculum vitae, 2) a personal statement describing research and career
goals, 3) an unofficial transcript (undergraduate and/or MS), and4) GRE
(if available) and TOEFL scores, to Dr. Mortelliti
(alessio.mortell...@maine.edu). Application materials should be combined
in one unique pdf file. Applications will be reviewed beginning January
21st.

*Graduate Assistantship (Forest Ecology) Available, University of Maine:
*The School of Forest Resources, University of Maine, is seeking highly
motivated doctoral student to participate in research addressing one or
more of the following: (1) Identify the factors ‒ including climate
metrics ‒ that best explain temporal variability in stand-level
productivity;(2) Examine forest stand dynamics using long-term permanent
plots and dendrochronology methods; (3) Characterize carbon and nitrogen
dynamics of decaying wood in field decomposition experiments; (4)
Improve forest carbon accounting methods, particularly regarding CO_2
fluxes from dead wood. Much of this work will take place at the Howland
Research Forest in central Maine. Howland Forest has the second longest
running eddy-flux tower in the U.S., and it provides long-term data and
a well-established research infrastructure.**

This assistantship provides funding at approximately $20,000/year, 50%
of health insurance paid, and a tuition waiver for 19 credits/year.
Operating support is also available.

*Qualifications:*The ideal candidate would have solid quantitative
skills, strong field and laboratory skills, and a demonstrated ability
to conduct independent research. High levels of intellectual
curiosityand self-motivation are essential. Position open until filled;
however, an ideal start date would be January, 2019. If interested,
please send a CV attached to a message briefly explaining your
background and research interests to shawn.fra...@maine.edu

[ECOLOG-L] MSc Position in small mammal seed predation ecology, University of Maine

2017-01-05 Thread Alessio Mortelliti
A graduate (MSc) position is available to work in Alessio Mortelliti’s
lab (http://alessiomortelliti.weebly.com/) focusing on the response of
small mammals (mice, voles, shrews and squirrels) to forest management
practices. The goal of the study is to contribute to providing a
mechanistic understanding of mammalian responses to silvicultural
practices and to understand how these responses affect the process of
seed predation. This will include conducting a series of experiments to
measure how individual characteristics of small mammals (e.g. health
status, personality, fitness) affect seed predation in the context of a
large scale capture-mark-recapture study.

The ideal candidate would have a strong passion for field work, strong
quantitative skills and an interest in teaching. Required
qualifications: Bachelor's degree in wildlife ecology, biology or a
closely-related field and a minimum gpa of 3.0. Preferred
qualifications: strong organizational skills, physical capability and
endurance, experience in conducting field research (preferably on small
mammals).

The assistantship position includes a stipend (the candidate is expected
to work as a TA at least 3 semesters), 50% of the student health
insurance, and tuition paid for the graduate program at the University
of Maine. Expected start date June 1st 2017.

If you are interested please send your application as a unique pdf file
including:

1) a cover letter that outlines your qualifications for the project
(focusing on skills mentioned in the candidate profile and preferred
qualifications) and career goals,

2) Curriculum vitae

3) GRE scores

4) an unofficial transcript

Send the document to Dr. Alessio Mortelliti
(alessio.mortell...@maine.edu <mailto:alessio.mortell...@maine.edu>).
Applications will be reviewed beginning January 30, 2017.

[ECOLOG-L] PhD Position: Developing Monitoring Protocols for mammalian carnivores (University of Maine)

2016-08-31 Thread Alessio Mortelliti
A PhD graduate assistantship is available to work in Alessio
Mortelliti’s lab (http://alessiomortelliti.weebly.com/) focusing on
developing large-scale optimal monitoring protocols for Mesocarnivores
(target species are the American marten and the Fisher but data on other
species will also be collected). The project is a collaboration between
the University of Maine and the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and
Wildlife. The main goal is to develop an occupancy-based large-scale
monitoring protocol based on camera-trapping surveys. This will include
conducting winter and summer field surveys in northern Maine across a
gradient of land-use change (i.e forestry practices).

The ideal candidate would have a strong passion for field work, strong
quantitative skills, willingness to work under harsh conditions (i.e.,
extreme cold) and ability to work with multiple stakeholders. Experience
with occupancy models (i.e., unmarked package for R), working in remote
areas, and with snowmobiles would be an advantage. Candidates must have
a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. The assistantship
position includes a full PhD. stipend, 50% of the student health
insurance, and tuition paid for the graduate program at the University
of Maine. Expected start date January 2016.

If you are interested please send (as one pdf file): 1) curriculum vitae
including list of publications and GRE scores (if available), 2)
unofficial transcripts (undergraduate and MS), 3) a personal statement
describing research and career goals to Dr. Alessio Mortelliti
(alessio.mortell...@maine.edu <mailto:alessio.mortell...@maine.edu>).
Applications will be reviewed beginning September 15, 2016.
