Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate position in
the Department of Entomology at Michigan State University. Funding is
available through a USDA-NIFA Specialty Crop Research Initiative grant that
will examine how neonicotinoid pesticides in cucurbits can be used to
manage pests while protecting the health of honeybees and other beneficial
pollinating insects. The postdoc will measure pest abundance on plants,
pollinator visitation to flowers, collect seasonal records of pesticide
inputs, collaborate with beekeepers who rent hives to cucurbit growers, and
systematically take plant and soil samples for pesticide analysis. Close
collaboration with cucurbit growers and team members at other universities
is an essential part of the day-to-day duties.



Interested individuals must have a PhD in entomology, ecology or a related
field. Demonstrated experience working in the field, knowledge of insect
taxonomy and statistical approaches is required. Interest and experience
with on farm research, pollinators and sustainable agriculture are definite
pluses. Postdoctoral associates are required to fluently communicate in
English scientific results to both technical and lay audiences in written
and presentation formats. Funding is provided for 1 year, with potential to
continue, based on satisfactory performance. Starting salary is
$47,500/year with a benefits package. The preferred start date for this
position is spring 2017.
