Re: [ECOLOG-L] Size of digitized research videos for analyses of behavior

2015-10-15 Thread Karl Berg
Hi Jorge,

I would keep each chuck to under 10-min or 2 GB. Depending on what type of
analysis you undertake, and the software and computer used, everything gets
easier as file size gets smaller. We've had a lot of trouble with 2 GB or
larger files crashing certain software programs (Final Cut and Adobe
Premiere and Audition) and they always take longer to open. Of course
computers and software are getting better and faster, but even most of the
camcorders today automatically save longer recordings into smaller chucks,
often at around 2GB, which in HD is about 10 min. I've also noticed some
"drift" in time code, which becomes more problematic as file size, and your
need for temporal resolution on the order of msec or smaller, increase.

[ECOLOG-L] Size of digitized research videos for analyses of behavior

2015-10-14 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

A few months ago, I posted a question on research videos for analyses of
behavior. Thanks to your suggestion, as I write, we are going from VHS
directly into digital and the quality remains good.

Question: How large (in Gb or time) should each chunk of digitized video
be? The first VHS is projected to take 100-110 minutes just compressing
(not counting the 6 hours of length of the video). If you have any
information on this, please, feel free to email me directly at

blayjo...@gmail.com

Gratefully,

Jorge
