RSA Annual Conference 2024
Global Challenges, Regional Collaboration and the Role of Places

11th – 14th June 2024, University of Florence, Italy
#RSA24

The Regional Studies Association’s Annual Conference #RSA24 is being held in
partnership with the Department of Economics and Business Sciences and
Department of Architecture, University of Florence, Italy. This four-day
conference brings together academics and policymakers to exchange news, views
and research findings from the fields of regional studies and science, regional
and economic development, policy and planning. There will be representation
from around 50 different global territories as we gather both established
experts and early career researchers in the beautiful city of Florence.

The conference will feature presentations, high-profile plenary speakers, a
number of specially convened sessions, workshops, professional development and
networking sessions, walking tours and field trips. The social programme will
include the conference dinner and a reception, side events, exhibitor stalls
and post-conference tours to explore Florence and Tuscany.

Call for Abstracts
Much recent focus has been on the great global challenges of the twenty-first
century. From the financial crisis to the Covid pandemic, through to the
uncertain futures caused by climate change, geopolitical instability, and
technological change, the backdrop for regional studies continues to be a
global context marked by turmoil, transition and transformation. It is often
easy to be drawn in by this allure, framing regional studies or policies in
relation to one or more global challenges – be it alignment to Sustainable
Development Goals, in response to one global crisis or another, and so on. But
what are the connections between regional studies and these global challenges?
More importantly, what are the connections between regional studies, these
global challenges and the people and places affecting change and being impacted
by change?

The RSA Annual Conference 2024 presents a timely opportunity to discuss and
debate the place and role of regions and regional research in this context. At
a time when in different contexts the need for regional policy and planning is
being contested, the conference organizers invite you to consider the role for
regions, regional policy and planning, and regional research. Moreover, how are
the connections being made or unmade, and what is the role for regional
collaboration – be it among researchers or policy communities, between
researchers and policymakers, across geographic or disciplinary contexts – in
all of this?

The organizers are keen to attract papers and sessions with contributions from
any discipline offering relevant insights at local and regional levels. Papers
which are highly innovative, collaborative, international or multi-disciplinary
are especially welcome, and from researchers or practitioners at any career
stage.

This is an interdisciplinary conference, and we welcome papers from all –
academics, researchers, students and those working in policy and practice. The
event is inclusive and offers networking opportunities for all in our field.
The organisers welcome proposals for special sessions, themed workshops and
innovative forms of networking and collaboration.

Special Sessions
We welcome submissions for Special Sessions (open or closed). More details and

where Professor Klaus Dodds (Editor of Territory, Politics, Governance) will
be in conversation with Professor Farhana Sultana, there will also be time for
the audience to ask their own questions.

Professor Sultana is an internationally-recognized interdisciplinary scholar,
interested in water governance, climate justice, political ecology, critical
development studies, transnational feminist theories, critical urban studies,
social justice, human rights, citizenship, decolonizing, and South Asia.
Professor Sultana is based in the Department of Geography and the Environment
at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University
and Research Director for Environmental Collaboration and Conflicts in the
Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration (PARCC)
at the Maxwell School. She has written multiple articles and edited books
including Water Politics: Governance, Justice and the Right to Water (2020) and
Eating, Drinking: Surviving (2016). Her scholarship works alongside a
commitment to activism and public engagement and addresses urgent questions
pertaining to climate justice, public health, the right to water and the
everyday and systemic struggles that continue to dominate the lives of the most
marginalised communities in the world.

If you have any questions or would like any further information, please do let
me know.

Please feel free to share with your colleagues and networks.

Best wishes,
Lesa

RSA Webinar - Whatever happened to uneven development? In conversation with Jamie Peck & Marion Werner, 16th December 2020

2020-12-11 Thread Lesa Reynolds
*Message sent from a system outside of UConn.*

Dear List Member

Regions Cities Industry Webinar Series

Global megatrends are transforming the way we live, work, interact, finance,
produce and consume. At the same time, the increasing environmental impacts of
human activities have sharpened the focus on sustainability of further
development. New technologies potentially provide an opportunity to address,
perhaps for the first time in the history of mankind, a substantial majority of
the fundamental societal challenges, from nutrition, energy availability and
sustainability, to access to products, services and information. However, these
same global megatrends can also be highly divisive and therefore represent one
of the biggest challenges for a global social, political and economic cohesion
and even peaceful coexistence in more than a generation. In addition, we have
newly remembered our global vulnerability to shocks such as the coronavirus and
there can be no doubt that this will change the world in which we live
prompting new questions and priorities.

The RSA Regions Cities Industry Webinar Series presents acclaimed researchers
and policymakers addressing these questions.

Whatever happened to uneven development? In conversation with Jamie Peck &
Marion
Werner<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.regionalstudies.org%2Fevents%2Fregions-cities-industry-series%2F%23&data=04%7C01%7CECONOMICGEOGRAPHY-L%40LISTSERV.UCONN.EDU%7Ce10597cf0652425e1e3708d89de4f3a9%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C637432953956855670%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=6GKMEq2Ou8a%2BzC9wPaT2RbGUuSOQS271cM84iWs4W7Y%3D&reserved=0!>
 16th December, 09.00 PST, 12.00 EST, 17.00 GMT

Uneven development-broadly defined as the unequal distribution of people,
resources, and wealth-is a, if not the, fundamental characteristic of human
geography. Uneven development is located and evidenced at global, regional,
national, urban, and suburban spatial scales, such that it is combined and
compounded for some people and places more than others. Patterns of uneven
development indeed mark the times and spaces of human history and have provided
the rich basis for theoretical developments in human geography and the social
sciences more broadly. This webinar seeks to get behind the rise and possible
fall of uneven development through an in conversation dialogue between Jamie
Peck and Marion Werner. It will focus on: how the authors have encountered
uneven development in their academic careers; how they have used uneven
development narratives in their research over time; and where they see academic
and policy debates heading on the unequal shape of contemporary capitalism.

world, which in turn significantly limits the possibility for knowledge
exchange and critical debates that are so important for scientist, researchers
and practitioners, perhaps now more so than ever. In light of these
developments, the Regional Studies Association (RSA) Board decided that it will
take extra measures to support the membership and wider global RSA community
via two newly set up webinar series: A Regions Cities Industry Webinar Series
and a “How to” Professional Development Webinar Series.
We hope you will take advantage and enjoy our RSA webinar series and until I
meet you there, please stay safe and healthy.

In addition, we have
newly remembered our global vulnerability to shocks such as the coronavirus and
there can be no doubt that this will change the world in which we live
prompting new questions and new priorities.
This RSA Webinar Series will present acclaimed researchers and policymakers
addressing these questions.
Open to all and free to attend, this webinar series aims to bring experts in
the field of regional studies, science and policy to you. The webinar can be
watched live but will also be available on demand. The webinars will run live
once a month and feature researcher and policymaker experts. They include time
for discussion, questions and comments.

Regional Studies Journals Annual Lecture
Regional Worlds: From Related Variety in Regional Diversification to Strategic
Coupling in Global Production
Networks
29th April 2020, 7am EDT, 12 noon BST, 1pm CET, 7pm SGT
Chair/ Introduction: Prof. Jennifer Clark, The Ohio State University, USA
Speaker: Prof. Henry Wai-chung Yeung, National University of Singapore,
Singapore
Discussant: Prof. Andres Rodriguez-Pose, London School of Economics, UK
The recent literature in regional studies has at least two influential but
parallel tracks. In the evolutionary economic geography (EEG) track, much has
been written on and debated about knowledge and innovation in regional path
development and the role of related variety in regional diversification. In the
second and relatively smaller strand of literature linked to the global
production networks (GPN) approach, researchers are concerned with how regional
actors and assets can be strategically coupled with the competitive dynamics of
global production networks. This lecture intends to serve as an initial and
sympathetic attempt to pave a “sidetrack” to connect these two parallel strands
that can enable researchers on both tracks to engage more explicitly with each
other. To do so, I offer a reconceptualization of “regional worlds” as a
central concept in regional studies. I argue that both strands of literature
are premised on their different conceptions of “regional worlds” of innovation
and production – a more endogenous view of regions as “specialized worlds” of
production in the EEG track and a more relational view of regions as
“interconnected worlds” of production in the GPN literature. Extending further
Boschma’s (2017) Regional Studies annual lecture, I believe this
reconceptualization of “regional worlds” can allow analytically the possibility
of strategic coupling with GPNs as a new form of related variety in regional
diversification by highlighting the importance of extra-local/regional linkages
and network dynamics. By relating related variety to strategic coupling, this
view can potentially reconcile the coexistence of endogenous and exogenous
sources of regional transformation. I will end the lecture wit

RSA Early Career Plenary Speaker Call

2018-11-26 Thread Lesa Reynolds
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We currently have several calls for Early Career Plenary Speakers at our
forthcoming conferences.

Applying is easy, for North America and Central and Eastern Europe you will
need to submit an abstract that fits with one of the conference themes. If
successful you will be part of one of the plenary sessions which fits your
choice of topic.

For the Annual Conference the successful applicant will take part in the
opening plenary panel session. The 90-minute panel will consist of 5 speakers
and the focus will be on the future of regional studies. Each panellist will be
asked to make a short opening statement, this will then be followed by
discussion among the panellists, with frequent interventions from the audience
in the form of questions and comments. The call is open to all, but we are
particularly keen to hear from researchers working from or on regions in the
Global South.

Applications should take the form of both a short video (maximum 4 minutes) of
the paper to be presented and 300-word abstract.

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know the abstract submission and early bird
registration deadline for the RSA Australasia Conference has been extended
until 31st October 2018. Please see below for the call for abstracts.

New Zealand and Australia occupy a distinctive position in global location,
offering opportunities for unique contributions to understanding of regional
economies and their dynamics. As proponents of Southern Theory have argued ours
is a history of legacies from colonialism, with enduring impacts on the nature
and functioning of regions and economies.

The centrality of land-use choices and connections to global markets in shaping
the economies of Australasia have impacted on the experiences of First Nations
peoples and have challenged capacities for innovation and the forging of new
regional futures in a post-industrial world. These realities are pressing as
New Zealand and Australia become more tightly embedded in global supply
networks and value chains than ever before.

Asian investment is reconfiguring national and regional economies, disrupting
long-established relationships with Europe and North America. International
students are a central feature of the tertiary education sector in Australia
and New Zealand, influencing new investment in our cities. As members of a
Trans Pacific Partnership that does not include the US, both nations may see
new forms of development that create opportunities and risks for First Nations
economies and for regional economies as new markets for land-based products and
resources emerge.

The RSA’s Third Australasia conference will address these issues in keynote
addresses <https://www.regionalstudies.org/sessions/2019-australasia-plenary/>
and special
sessions<https://www.regionalstudies.org/sessions/special-sessions-2019-australasia-conference/>.
The conference also encourages presentation of research on any of the
following major themes.
