Wanted: I am looking for 
examples from science, engineering 
and everyday life where if you need 
to add a substance, it is advantageous 
to transform a waste material to 
obtain that substance.

Bemusing question.
Is there any substance for which the proposition is NOT true?
If you have a counterexample or two in mind, I'd be interested.

Although perhaps the question rests on your definition of "add".
I'd been presuming you meant "obtain";  but perhaps you meant 
something else.
