In a society where computers have become ubiquitous, it is necessary to
develop a deeper understanding of the nature of computer programs, not
just from the technical viewpoint, but from a broader historical and
philosophical perspective. A historical awareness of the evolution of
programming not only helps to clarify the complex structure of
computing, but it also provides an insight in what programming was, is
and could be in the future. Philosophy, on the other hand, helps to
tackle fundamental questions about the nature of programs, programming
languages and programming as a discipline.

HaPoP 2022 is the fifth edition of the Symposium on the History and
Philosophy of Programming, organised by HaPoC, Commission on the History
and Philosophy of Computing (www.hapoc.org) as a hybrid event. As in the
previous editions, we are convinced that an interdisciplinary approach
is necessary for understanding programming with its multifaceted nature.
As such, we welcome participation by researchers and practitioners
coming from a diversity of backgrounds, including historians,
philosophers, artists, computer scientists and professional software
developers.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER PROGRAM?
This edition of the symposium will be co-located with the final
conference of the ANR-funded PROGRAMme project which poses the basic
question “What is a computer program?” This seemingly simple question
has no simple answer today, but the responses one gives to it affect
very real problems: who is responsible if a given piece of software
fails; whether a program is correct or not; or whether copyright or
patent law applies to programs. The project is anchored in the
conviction that a new kind of foundational research is needed. The broad
range of scientific and societal problems related to computing cannot be
addressed by any single discipline.

The question “What is a program?”, is a call for deeper critical
thinking about the nature of programs that is both foundational, in the
sense that it goes beyond specific problems, but also accessible, in the
sense that it should be open to anyone who is willing to make an effort
in understanding this basic technique from a broader horizon.

In order to initiate new collaborations that critically reflect on the
nature of programs and engage a broader community with the above issues,
HaPoP 2022 is particularly looking for talk proposals that relate to the
question “What is a computer program?” and offer a novel reflection from
a variety of perspectives, including historical, practice-based,
philosophical, logical, etc.

SELECTED TOPICS OF INTEREST FOR THE SYMPOSIUM
Possible and in no way exclusive questions of relevance to this
symposium are:

- What is a computer program?
- Are we getting better at writing programs that solve the given problem?
Is programming a specialist discipline, or will everyone in the future
be a programmer?
- What are the different scientific paradigms and research programmes
developed through the history of computer programming?
- What is a correct program?
- Is a program a text?
- Is it possible to eliminate errors from computer programs?
- How did the notion of a program change throughout the history?
- How are programs and abstractions born, used and understood?
- What was and is the relationship between hardware and software
developments?
- How did theoretical computer science (lambda-calculus, logics,
category theory) influence the development of programming languages and
vice versa?
- What are the novel and most interesting approaches to the design of
programs?
- What is the nature of the relationship between algorithms and programs?
- What legal and socio-economical issues are involved in the creation,
patenting and free-distribution of programs?
- How do we understand the multi-faceted nature of programs combining
syntax, semantics and physical implementation?
- How is programming to be taught?

*Sometimes, we want a description not just to be true, but also
comprehensive - the whole truth, in some sense. I will argue that different
senses of comprehensiveness can be elucidated using the resources of modal
logic, understood broadly. Specifically, I will define a variety of what we
may call "totality operators" and discuss their relationships and their
applications in metaphysics. *

[Educasup] UNILOG'2022: Ready to go? Early Bird Registration Fee: Dec 15

Dear Colleagues

We are working on the preparation of UNILOG'2022 and the conditions are
good.
The COVID-19  has always been weak in Crete. The event will be 100% in
person.
The doors of the Island were open to tourism last summer without problem
and the conference center, near Chania,  where UNILOG'2022 will take place
has already resumed its activities a couple of months ago.
Note also that the event will take place in the first half of April, before
the start of the tourist season.
UNILOG 2022 is organized under the Aegis of  the Government of Crete.
Crete is an island with a history of about 5.000 years, cradle of Western
civilization, including the Labyrinth, Plato's cave and much more.
Everybody is welcome to join and enjoy this wonderful place.

UNILOG is a series of events (combining a congress and a school)  promoting
- logic in all its aspects: mathematical, philosophical, computational,
semiotic, historical
- the relations between logic and other fields

7th UNIVERSAL LOGIC SCHOOL
The school will have a duration of 5 days: from April 1st to April 5, 2022
with:
- an opening round table on the topic "Why study logic?"
- 30 tutorials
- a closing session about how to publish

7th UNIVERSAL LOGIC CONGRESS
The congress will have a duration of 6 days: from April 6 to April 11 2022,
with
- keynote speakers
- contributing speakers
- workshops
- a secret speaker (as in previous editions),  i.e. a speaker whose
identity is revealed only at the time of his/her/its talk or after
- a contest

2nd WORLD LOGIC PRIZES CONTEST
The 1st World Logic Prizes Contest took place in Vichy, France, during the
6th UNILOG in 2018.
This contest is a competition between winners of logic prizes of different
countries.
The winner is awarded the Universal Logic Prize.

There will also be:
- a session honoring recently deceased colleagues, participants of previous
UNILOGs: Mike Dunn (1941-2021) and  John Cororan (1937-2021)
- a book exhibition and some book launches

Repenser le « nous » en temps de pandémie

Au centre de ce séminaire il y a l’idée que la pandémie en appelle à 
une réflexion sur le “nous” capable de se situer à une échelle 
planétaire, c’est-à-dire de théoriser la relation d’interdépendance qui 
nous unit en une seule humanité́. Rien ne semble plus à l’ordre du 
jour.  Rien n’est plus exigé, réclamé, annoncé par une conjoncture – la 
crise pandémique – qui de fait, a uni le monde, objectivement uni le 
monde pour en faire une communauté involontaire et contrainte par la 
menace de sa disparition. Cela est évident et nous est évident. Rien, 
cependant n'est aussi difficile à penser, rien n'est à ce point renvoyé 
à un temps à venir, à un horizon lointain et incertain.
Il y a quelque chose dans l’hypothèse d’un nous planétaire qui va 
au-delà des catégories spécifiques que mobilise la philosophie politique 
et sociale contemporaine, quelque chose qui n’est pas traduisible au 
moyen du lexique philosophique, si ce n’est au prix d’une distorsion. Au 
cours des séances, ce séminaire s'attache à interroger l’idéal d’un 
“nous” planétaire, à travers plusieurs approches disciplinaires, dont 
la phénoménologie, la sociologie, la psychanalyse, la psychologie 
sociale, l’anthropologie et la théorie politique.
