Re: [Efw-user] Connecting to remote offices via VPN

2009-05-06 Thread compdoc
I have a customer with several remote offices connected to a
main office. I'm pretty sure the remote offices can reach
the other remote offices using pings, etc., but they don’t
normally do that.

Just running the Windows openvpn GUI on the remote
workstations to connect them to the main lan/server might
work, but not having a fixed ip is an issue for daily
connections, since its always changing.

VPNs simulate a 10baseT or 10meg connection. That shouldn’t
be hard to route through your connection.

Subject: [Efw-user] Connecting to remote offices via VPN

Hello everybody,

I have an client with two offices, i main office they got an
booking
system on an Apache and PHP server. Now they would like to
use the same
system in the remote office. The system is not made to
withstand open
internet connection, no password no nothing like that. Both
places have
standard ADSL lines, so no fixed public IP-address.

But we have own servers with fixed public IP-addresses. We
are running
Endian firewall and it would be no problem getting them too
running
Endian firewall.

Would it be possible to have two VPN tunnels to our Endian
and does IP
trafic from main office find it´s way to remote office and
vice verse.
Will it be very slow?

Or does anyone have any other solution?

Kenneth

Possible? Yes. Advisable? Maybe not.

No slower than the slowest Internet connection in the path.

See Sam's reply for a superior solution.

If VPN is absolutely required; does anyone know if you can setup a
net-to-net VPN using host names rather than IP addresses? Is so, you
could do this and use a dynamic DNS provider for the DNS hosting.

Re: [Efw-user] Connecting to remote offices via VPN

2009-05-06 Thread Sam Osborne

Hi Kenneth,

Sounds like overkill, a lot of work setting up 2 new Endian boxes and
VPN the 3 together for a simple web based service.

I believe it would be best (if possible) to get a static IP address at
the main office, set up the server as a web server for the Internet,
set up and require SSL connection if the connection is from an
external IP (done in the PHP code with the variable
$_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']), and require a username and password if
connection is external IP (can be a generic one if you want, but your
security is only as good as your passwords). Won't affect internal
use at the main office. Would work better, more reliable and just as
secure as a VPN.. I would prefer to spend the time setting it up like
this then to go to all the other hassle. And you don't need any new
hardware saving $$$.

If you find you need to share other network resources, ie printer,
shared folders etc then I would agree with VPN, however if it is
purely web based that's all you need.

Let me know however if I've misunderstood your requirements.

Sam.

  Hi.

This is very normal for Linux. Much will be cache. Although you might also
have not enough RAM but that's not clear from you're question. How much ram
does the server have?
