[Ekiga-list] Luc, I need help!
Hi Luc, I'm trying to build the RPM's for the CVS version of Ekiga. I got the spec files that Johnny used and modified them to make the current CVS RPM's. But there is something I'm doing wrong. It builds the source fine, but it's crapping out trying to make the src and executable rpm's I was wondering if you could send me the SPEC files you're using for 2.05 and maybe I can find where I've made my mistake. Re: [Ekiga-list] Linux Journal article on Ekiga and Wengo
Sure, it's easy. But you have to go to the VoipBuster site to register. On their site it also shows how to setup a SIP device or software. In Ekiga, after you setup your account at Voipbuster. just start Ekiga and go to Edit then Acconts and add a VoipBuster account and put in your information. Under Registrar, you can put sip.voipbuster.com or sip1.voipbuster.com. I have my Ekiga to be able to use either one by making two Voipbuster accounts in Ekiga. One is sip.voipbuster.com, the other is sip1.voipbuster.com Then to use Voipbuster, you can make it your default account and anytime you enter a telephone number (don't use 001 or +1 like you would do if you were going to make an international call, just put in the area code +number) it will use VoipBuster. Or if you have another account that is your default account, you can call someone by [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] (depending on which one you set up under accounts). I've found that sip1.voipbuster.com usually gives better audio, but I have both sip and sip1 for Voipbuster because sometimes one site will go down, and I can use the other. You can also call another VoipBuster user by using [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or sip1 depending on if you setup 2 Voipbuster accounts in Ekiga) You can do the same thing with any of the services that allow inbound SIP as well as those that allow H323. You just have to make sure that whatever services you use can use the audio codecs in Ekiga. Can you access voipbuster from Ekiga? How? Fedora Core 6 Linux Ekiga Rocks!! Re: [Ekiga-list] Let's spread Ekiga : volunteers ?
I would suggest that you read on Ekiga's site about how to get 2 applications running under alsa at the same time. It doesn't always work because alsa keeps changing things. One of the biggest problems with alsa is that it forces the jitter buffer to go wild. I have my sound in Ekiga to use Default for the sound events. My audio output device is set to use my sound card and the input device to use the Default. It works very well here that way. (Default meaning the alsa default device). It's not a codec problem, it's alsa. If you have a full duplex sound card you can try and use that directly or try OSS. But the settings that I described that I'm using works well for me and most every other computer that I've installed Ekiga on. On a side note; I had to remove the custom alsa.config and let alsa set it back up using Fedora's Sound Card Detection program after the last update of alsa. On Mon, 2007-02-19 at 08:19 -0800, JCA wrote: a) you can compile it with --disable-gnome I will try that. The point is, this should be the default. b) you should report all problems you encounter, Ekiga 2.0.x is quite stable for most users... I have reported my problems, and so far they remain unsolved. The fact remains that under exactly the same conditions (platform, distribution, kernel, sound hardware and configuration, and network) Skype, Gizmo and Wengo are usable (not perfect, but usable) whereas Ekiga's sound is so choppy (no matter what codec) that it is not usable. Which is a shame, for if they were all similarly usable, Ekiga would be my first choice. ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list Fedora Core 6 Linux Ekiga Rocks!! [Ekiga-list] ATA's or SIP Phones
I would appreciate any and all of every ones experience of which ATA's or sip phones that are compatible with Linux, cable modems, and are fully programmable, and will also work as traditional landlines., so that I can use ekiga.net for sip, and other services for pcpstn, and be able to use it as a POTS. I have emailed most of the companies that support such phones, but none of them have responded to my emails. It seems the only way I can find out is from someone Else's experience. The Linksys SPA3102 looks promising but I can't find enough information to make sure it actually does all these things and I have gotten no replies from the distributors Any and all help will be greatly appreciated, George. Re: [Ekiga-list] Linux Journal article on Ekiga and Wengo
The problem I believe,is when reviewers test and compare software (in this case the article you mentioned), is that the reviewers are not fully aware of the potential or features of the software they are writing about. Reviewers should know the programs completely before they try to write comparison articles. Ekiga can be used with ANY sip service that allows inbound sip, with pbx's, and h323 gateways. It would be ridiculous to program Ekiga to be able to register (or in this article pay for pcpstn credits) from the program to all of the services it can use, since all of the services use a different method to register (or pay). And I don't think Linux users are so stupid they can't figure out how to go to a site and register or pay, although this article seems to imply that. If you see my signature at the end of this message, all of these services I use with one program, EKIGA!! I can use any one, or all of them at the same time. There are many more then just these services that can be used. As far as WengoPhone or Gizmo, or any of the others. my best experience is with Ekiga. If you look again at my signature, you will see that Ekiga also works with Gizmo :) Ekiga can be used to connect to windoze users that use micro$ofts new version of the old msn messenger too (micro$oft finally had to join the mainstream and make a messenger that was SIP compatible) :) I think there is a WIKI for Ekiga that shows the services and how to set them up that have been used by Ekiga users. I know of no other program (windose or Linux) that has all the capabilities that Ekiga does. As far as audio quality, like you asked. I wonder what codec they were using, and through what service. As far as installation, how hard is it really to use any of the modern methods, such as Yum, etc to install the software, or to download and install 3 rpms and go through the installation druid? As far as the Linux community goes and with the installation instructions on Ekiga's site, it's also very simple to compile and install from source (even if you've never done it before). I wish these reviewers had enough sense to be intelligent. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it on the list so that you're aware of coverage. Re: [Ekiga-list] Alsa-Bluetooth-Ekiga Howto?
Thanks for the help. I was finally able to get it working by deleting ALL the bluez and bluetooth stuff and reinstalling. I was able to get the devices to pair. However, the results were very poor. Apparently ALSA doesn't play well together with bt-sco anymore. Every time I tried to use Headset for my mic and audio, the programs (Ekiga, Skype, XMMS, etc) would connect and I could hear about the first second then the programs would lock up. So I don't know if the mic was ever really working. I don't know if it makes any difference, but the dongle was stereo and my Motorola headset was mono. I might try again later if I can find a stereo headset. The headset shows up as an audio device, but doesn't work. Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. I just can't understand how root couldn't have permissions to access the devices. Thanks Again, George Look for snd_bt_sco (don't remeber url, AFAIR ALSA-bluetooth name) kernel module and associated tools. In my experiments it worked fine: you have to insert the snd_bt_sco module, start btsco daemon with headset address, and select BT Headset card in Ekiga's configuration. Kmix also recognizes the module. For me it worked with CSR dongle and Nokia headset. Don't forget to pair headset with computer. Kernel was 2.6.13, now 2.6.16.36. At 2.6.13 hotplug subsystem was a bit different, and snd_bt_sco was simply set as 2-nd sound card and loaded automatically. Are you using video when you make your calls? 50 KB/s upstream isn't quite enough if you are using video and have the quality or frame rate set very high. I'm not sure if I asked you before, but you might try using GSM instead of ilbc if your VOIP provider uses it. Also if your VOIP provider uses SPEEX narrow, that will help a lot too. I'm using cable (1 megabyte download, 356 kilobytes upload and on some connections using video, it's still not enough if I'm also using one of the audio codecs that are high bandwidth hogs plus high quality video. Also, if you don't mind making your video smaller, that will cut down on a lot of your band width uses. Also, if your talking to friends that are using standard analog modems, that can also create the problems you describe if they aren't using one of the low bandwidth audio codecs (or are trying to use video too with the video quality and frame rates set to high). I hope this info will help you in resolving your problems with the audio. Just do the setup instructions that is on the Viopbusdter setup information. It you set voipbuster as your default account, then anytime you put in a telephone number in ekiga, it will default to using VoipBuster. If you use the voipbuster program for windoze the format is 0+country code+area code +number In the Us that would 001 for the country code. I discovered that if you use ekiga, you don't have to do all that, just put in the country code+area code +number. In my case it would just be 13606660349 with out the leading zeros. Ekiga somehow works it that way. And of course what ever other accounts you may have installed, you have to give it the full path, Ie: if you also have Diamong card or any other service accounts installed and VoipBuster is your default account, then you will have to give the full URl when you setup your phone book or enter it directly such as in my case with diamond card I can't just put the telephone number in because it would default to VoipBuster, so in that case I would have to enter [EMAIL PROTECTED] because it's not the default. The same principle applies to all of your accounts and if you are going to use sip, you would have to add person@ekiga .net. When you set an account as default, It's the same procedure whether it is Voipbuster or some thing else. The new microsoft messenger works with sip, bit my main problem is that I can't receive calls from the FWD network. I'm actually pretty confused about how it works anyway. I have an account and I can check my voice messages from ekiga, but when I use the call me test on FWD, ekiga doesn't see it and it sends me an email saying that I missed a call because the user is not online, or something like that. [Ekiga-list] Fedora Binaries for Ekiga
I had offered a while back to help making the fedora binaries and someone answered me. But after an arduous time of installing Fedora Core 6, in the process I lost my email. I am now up and running again, so I can help. If the person who replied to me before would send me another email, I can get started. They will be Fedora Core 6 binaries, don't know if that matters or not. George ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list
Re: [Ekiga-list] Weird Sound problem With Ekiga
oops, looks like I spoke to soon. This only fixed the problem to Ekiga's echo server. But still have the same problems making phone calls :( On Tue, 2006-10-31 at 09:26 +0100, Damien Sandras wrote: Hi, Thank you for reporting back, that's interesting! I don't know why that has happened, but it was the fix. So I hope that others that may be having the sane problem can benefit from this.
