Yes, that's a stupid packaging problem -- basically we don't solve it

1. ekiga itself has an alpha port (the installer still sucks) ;
2. no, you don't need to register anywhere ;
3. any decent SIP software will be able to register to an account
somewhere, and you'll be able to call them there ; or you can use their
IP address directly if you want ;
4. if your username on ekiga.net is "jean.basile", then they just have
to call "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" while you are registered there.

Hope this helps,

I'm not sure I know something about it : looks like an installation issue...

But I don't like discussing cvs HEAD on the normal user list.

Ah, indeed, the faq doesn't say (it probably should) : please make sure
you installed the developpment packages for openldap before you compile
pwlib.

So the fix is easy : install openldap-dev/libldap2-dev whatever it is

It is consistent :
(1) it found pwlib's headers
(2) it didn't find the lib itself.

Did you install pwlib correctly ? Looking in config.log is generally the
best way to know what went wrong in a configure script.

It isn't ekiga which says so, it's the linker. If the linker thinks so,

Look for that file, I'm pretty sure it's there somewhere.

Here is how gstreamer does, as far as I know : they get the data and
feed it to their codecs, which return something which measures their
confidente it is "correct data" for them.

So by elimination, they get the right codec, which can then be confirmed
and better tuned afterwards.

I have a Sony DCR TRV-8E, and it works when the linux firewire subsystem
doesn't crash...

While we're mentioning AVC, I have had regular reports about inverted
colors (see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343408 )... they
still came in after I committed a fix long ago, then disappeared, so
perhaps this issue is dead.

Yes, I know : my point was that there's no need to try to compile ekiga
if you don't have the basic dependencies (you only mention you did them
in this very mail!).

Ok, let's fix this automake issue : ekiga's autogen.sh calls
gnome-autogen.sh : this is where the REQUIRED_AUTOMAKE_VERSION is used,
and where the automake check is done. The one I have here does know
about automake 1.10 -- but notice it seems to look after it under the
name automake-1.10.

Check your own gnome-autogen.sh to see exactly what it is looking for.
There's probably a bug to report in your distribution there.

It means that if ekiga doesn't precise the required automake version,
then it will require 1.4.

Search for the following piece of code :

Well, I guess your distribution doesn't ship a recent enough
gnome-common package. Here I see in this package's ChangeLog :

 * macros2/gnome-autogen.sh: Make automake 1.10 work too.

Ekiga cannot do anything to fix this : it asks something to the driver,
the drivers answers ok and does stupid things...

There are two ways out :
- the driver is modified to really support what ekiga wants ;
- the driver is modified to be honest and return an error when asked
something it can't do.

Both ways are on the driver side.

The driver knows it can't do that. But when asked to do it, it crops the

If at least it complained ekiga would try something else.

Note: skype has both:
1) big servers out there
2) and leech their users

Do you have network on the box ? If so, does ekiga listen on the right
