[Ekiga-list] sound output

2007-08-09 Thread Kevin Hunter
Hi List,

I'm using Ubuntu Feisty with Ekiga 2.0.3. NB: I'm /very/ new to Ekiga,
and have yet to actually talk to anyone with it.

Is there a way to have Ekiga not hog the sound output while in a call?
Currently, it refuses to make the call if I have another application
producing sound. Besides the obvious "Why are you using Ekiga and
listening to music?" it seems to me that this behavior is undesirable.
Particularly if I have other, legitimate sound events set up. (The ones
that come to mind are from my instant messaging client, email
notification, and other quick notifier-esque applications.)

TIA,

Kevin

Hmm, okay, I've done that. It doesn't seem too bad, at least not more
than I'm already used to when I use my portable. Thank you for the pointer.

I recognize that Ekiga is now at 2.0.9, but I'm not the package
maintainer with Ubuntu, and I don't want to be in the business of going
outside of the package manager.

However, Damien already answered my question: use the Default setting to
make Ekiga not try to take exclusive lock of the sound output.

[Ekiga-list] sound quality

2007-08-09 Thread Kevin Hunter
Hello List,

Given recent mention that I'm using an out of date version of Ekiga
(2.0.3) because it's what Ubuntu currently has in it's repositories,
what are my options in terms of sound and quality? No matter which
codec I put at the top of the list in Preferences, I seem to get very
choppy sound. When I dial the [EMAIL PROTECTED] address, it connects, but
both the woman's voice and my own are very muddled and hard to hear. It
clears up for a few seconds after about 5 seconds, but then returns to
choppy, low quality. (Juxtaposed with the Skype client that I just
tried which gets very good quality of sound, so I'm certain it's not my
hardware/driver.)

Is there something not written in the docs that I'm missing?

Thanks,

Kevin

Neither of those had any effect. :-( Comparing just our bandwidth (I
have a 384 Kbps connection) you'd think that'd at least do /something/.
Hmm. Thanks, though. Any other ideas?

Heh, since I have no camera, I agree! ;-)

(In human terms, 2.0.3 is a little over a year behind the times.) I
understand your hesitance to step outside the package management system.
The Ekiga folks have created an up-to-date .deb so that you can still
stay within the package manager:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ekiga#head-57385c7cf79361cbb4d7195b9f43c1bb33c1e94c

Search for "Install the latest version" in the page.

(I haven't done it yet, but that was in an earlier thread.)

Nice! Not quite an option I'd like to /take/ at this time, but an
option nonetheless. :-)

[Ekiga-list] suggestion

2007-10-11 Thread Kevin Hunter
Hi Damien,

Suggestion: I note that the tooltip that pops up when I'm over the audio
transmission button says "Audio transmission status. During a call,
click here to suspend or resume the audio transmission." Seems to me
that might be better served as "Mute" and "Unmute".

My 2 cents,

Kevin

I like the way you think! (Developer à developer) Okay, it doesn't
mute the microphone, yet no audio is sent. What qualitative difference
to the user does that make?

Pending response to above question . . . (i.e. I dunno yet.)

I ran into something similar recently, I think. You may need to select
which interface you want Ekiga to use:

Edit->Preferences->Network Settings->Listen on (Dropdown combo box)

[Ekiga-list] download page icon question

2007-10-30 Thread Kevin Hunter
Hi List,

I was idly perusing the Ekiga download page
(http://www.ekiga.org/index.php?rub=5) and noted that both the Windows
and Skype icons are sort of a blue-white-grey
don't-look-as-good-as-usual icons. Is that an issue of copyright or
something?

Thanks,

[Ekiga-list] USB headset and use/detection

2007-10-30 Thread Kevin Hunter
Hi List,

Ubuntu Feisty, Ekiga 2.0.11.

I note that Ekiga seems to only scan the available sound devices on
startup. So, if I start up with the headset on, make a call, hangup,
and then make another call but unplug the headset, Ekiga gives me a
couple of errors, rather than defaulting to another sound system. The
same is true if I start up with no headset plugged in, and then plug
them in before a call.

I know about selecting the sound I/O devices with
Edit->Preferences->Devices->Audio Devices, so it's not a big deal, but
what would be the obstacles in implementing automatic detection/use with
D-Bus? Thus, Ekiga could have a "Default device if available" plan, and
do a quick devices check just before initiating every call.

Thanks,

Kevin
