I tried using linphone, another linux softphone. I got connected to
all the sip uri's listed on the website, but all I got was silence.

Thanks,

The meetings are always accessible via voip. :) - I don't know who was on voip
this past meeting. I was too busy doing meeting preparation stuff to get on
voip myself, this past sunday.

One should always first join on #berkeleytip on irc.freenode.net. That's the
place to find out the latest details for the meeting, like which voip server
we're on, what channel, etc.

http://sites.google.com/site/berkeleytip/remote-attendance

Drop by the irc channel any day, even non meeting days. Our next regularly
scheduled BTIP meeting is Sat Oct 3, 12Noon - 3P PDST UTC-8 are the scheduled
topic hours.

The 12Noon hour is the specifically Ekiga/ all voip topics discussion hour.
anyone is free to talk abot these issues at any time, in addition to that

[Ekiga-list] Aug 1 16- Global VOIP Free SW HW Culture meeting, BerkeleyTIP, For Forwarding

2009-08-01 Thread john_re
Interested in joining the friendly global Free SW HW Culture communities in a
global Voice meeting? You´re invited. :)

You can join from your home, or better: get a local meeting together. Tip: a
college WiFi cafe could be a great local meeting place. Make sure you have a
VOIP headset!

For all details, see the website (I´m leaving out many sublinks to make this
email smaller).
http://sites.google.com/site/berkeleytip

Start by joining #berkeleytip on IRC freenode.net. We´ll help you get your
VOIP connection working. :)

= MARK YOUR CALENDARS: 1st Sat 3rd Sunday each month. August 1 16.
10A - 6P Pacific US time (+7H GMT, IIRC)
= 1P-9P Eastern US time = 5P - 1A GMT ?

Or, come to the local meeting on the UC Berkeley campus.
NOTE: SPECIAL LOCATION AUG 1: SEE BTIP WEBSITE FOR LOCATION,
RSVP TO ME OR THE BTIP LISTS.

AUG 1 MEETING WILL BE 12N - 3P AT THE BTIP VOIP SERVER LOCATION
ON THE UCB CAMPUS. SEE THE WEBSITE FOR ROOM LOCATION.
We´ll hack on the new BTIP Asterisk VOIP server, in its presence.

PLEASE RSVP TO ME (John) OR THE LIST IF YOU WANT TO MEET AT OUR
USUAL LOCATION, THE FREE SPEECH CAFE, 10A-12n, 3-6PM,
(otherwise i might not be there).

= MEETING TOPICS FOR AUGUST:
1) Whatever _you_ want to work on - Email the BTIPGlobal list
let us know what your interests are.
2) Our VOIP conference server, using Asterisk.
3) Planning for year 2.

= JOIN FOR THE START OF YEAR 2 GLOBAL MEETINGs:
We had a great first year. We had local attendees from around the San
Francisco Bay Area Northern California. High School, College, Grad Students,
 working retired people attended.

From the US, people joined the meeting (IRC or VOIP) from Hawaii to Virgina,
Washington to Michigan to Florida. (+ California other states.)

Globally, Sweden, Germany, England, Ireland, Iran India ( maybe others I
don´t recall right now.) :)

In May Richard Stallman joined the global meeting for Q A about free SW HW.

== YEAR 2 FOCUS: COLLEGE LOCAL MEETINGS, AMERICAS´ ANNOUNCEMENTS.

Two main things I´ll focus on this year:
1) Inviting groups to join at colleges universities - BTIP is educational.
My hope: if more students learn about free SW hw culture, some of them will
then go on to become _contributors_. :)

2) I´ll try to get monthly announcements out to the biggest LUGs in the 10
largest countries in the Americas.

== What would _YOU_ like to accomplish this year? Email the BTIP mail list,
say ¨hi¨, tell us about your interests, projects desires.

= FOR FORWARDING - You are invited to forward this announcement wherever
you think it might be appreciated.

. If not, will you please tell me:

   1) Who owns it?

Damien Sandras. Ever is some people do have account and administer the
server, I guess it is mainly under Damien's responsibility. Damien?

I don't really own it. It is kindly hosted by easyneuf :
 http://easyneuf.fr

   2) who manages it?

  Damien Sandras, Jan AKA TheBonsai

 Mainly Jan nowadays.

   3) where is the hw?

  In France... My own country.
  Hosting: http://www.easyneuf.fr/

   4) what general special purpose hw does it use?

Nothing fancy, just regular hw for a server. I'm not sure to truly
  understand your point here...

Point: Is there any VOIP specific hardware? Maybe some telecom carrier
grade voice IO capability stuff? Low latency throughput, etc? Maybe
some Digium stuff??

   5) what sw does it run?

  The nice part:
  Running on GNU/Linux
  Kamailio http://www.kamailio.org/
  Asterisk http://www.asterisk.org/
  + LAMP service
  - dedicated user interface in PHP under GPL
  http://webxser.tuxfamily.org/

I'm currently working on a new user interface using Drupal
  http://drupal.org/

  In short:
The whole software stack is open source.

Mostly I'm interested in the sw that does the voip conferencing, that
mixes the audio stream. also control for the conference room - is
there, or can there be made available, easily, some control panel for a
voip conference, that shows status info about the conference members,
the rate quality of their connections, etc - something to help manage
a conference to any useful extent, perhaps debug connections, - like
volume levels, etc

Like, we did some conferences using it, sometimes some people seemed
too loud, or maybe had background noise, (music, keyboard clicks), it
would be nice to have tools for the meeting manager to identify problems
(ex- which line has the music playing, so we could turn down the volume
on that channel, cause they went away from their computer forgot to
turn their mic off, etc)

   6) what is its network connectivity?

I do not know how much exactly.

Anyone? Can we get info from Jan AKA TheBonsai? Multiple peering?
Data rate? Mere internet, or voice carrier connections?

6b) what is the maximum conference participants it can handle

I've no clue. I personally tested up to something like 10.

Jan?

6c) can it now, or will it in the future, handle video conferencing?

  Jan? Damien?

In the future probably, we had tested in the past an asterisk app
supporting video but we did not deploy it.

   7) What issues should one be aware of in attempting to create a global
   conference? Ex: USA India?

It is numeric communication. Thus geographical mesures need to be
reconsidered. It mostly depends on the underlying net infrastructure.

I do not know Ekiga.net's own limits in this regard.

Jan? anyone?

7b) to ensure acceptable quality from multi continents, what can be
done? Including, network providers with good VOIP quality TOS?

Are you considering professional use of the service?

No, just for the BerkeleyTIP monthly meeting.
http://sites.google.com/site/berkeleytip/

   Thanks :)

  Hope that helps.

Hi Chaitanya! :)

I am actually right now, just as I received this from you, in the middle
of _re-writing_ my reply to your _last_ email. 8-0

I wrote you a great reply, then apparently with all the things I have
to do I must have forgotten to send it, that reply is now gone
forever. :( I am so sad. :(

Anyway, I'm so slow at writing emails, but my _re-written_ reply is half
finished, so I'm going to try to finish that first, so I'll be back up
to zero level, then work forward from there. :)

The reason I'd noticed my _last_ email to you had disappeared is because
I was about to write you a _new_ email asking how you are progressing,
and to see if maybe we can try a test VOIP conference sometime early
this week, so we can work out any bugs that might exist in having you
connect to our ekiga.net VOIP conference server channel from India,
before the Feb 7 meeting.

So, thank you to you for this email from you, for keeping on top of
things, :)

As you saw in my reply to Boris below, we've successfully had people
connect to our VOIP conference from the East, North, West continental
USA, plus Hawaii, out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. But it will
be a likely big step forward to get you connected from halfway around
the world. :) - Hopefully an _easy_ big step. :)

It is very late at night here, _way_ long past my bedtime. But, I
thought it was important to get the _re-written_ email out to you
tonight before I go to bed. So, it will probably not be until 12-18
hours from now that I can start to think about the issues you have just
raised in this email of yours, write a reply.

==
OK, so you have some makefiles issues to be resolved - please email me
back, be sure to include sending to the BTIP list, tell us more
details about what you want to talk about, what your suggestion is for
solving the problem. :)

Besides myself, there are several very capable people on the BTIP list
who are also able to help all of us together find solutions to any
problems that come up - in particular I'll mention to you David, Daniel,
Windsor Chris. :)

BTIP members - if you have suggestions for Chaitanya, please jump right
in with them. :)

THanks C., best wishes. :)

[Ekiga-list] Someone please get E3 into highly used distros, especially KUbutu 8.4, thanks :) was-Re: Distributions available

2009-01-26 Thread john_re
1) Wow, Eugen.Dedu - that's a great tool/list!

2) Alan - I agree with you 100%. E3 is simply unuseful to the _users_
if it isn't available to them. I'd think the project would be much
better off the project's leaders ensured that an E3 version was promptly
made available to be installed, made use of, by _users_. E3 isn't
filling it's potential if it isn't being _used_! :)

Personally, being a long time KDE user, ( 10 year linux user, maybe
4-5 yr Ubuntu user), I use KUbuntu 8.4, cause I want a non-KDE-beta-sw
system (hence no KU 8.10 for me) that's what I recommend to other
users. I suspect there are many others using KU 8.4, not 8.10, and
until such time as KDE 4 stabilizes, that is likely to continue.

Since that platform is likely a large quantity of users, I think it is
obvious that the Ekiga project would be well served by Ek persons who
know something about compiling, library dependencies, Distro management,
backports, putting out the effort to do whatever it takes to get
whatever it takes to make E3 easily (ie apt) installable on KU 8.4, at
the minimum (along with other popular distros).

That is a hearty _suggestion_ :) not a denigration of Ek's leaders -
I'm presuming most here are volunteers, I only suggest, not tell,
volunteers how to spend their time. :) [ thanks for all the sw :)]

[If someone can get NetBSD, Solaris MSWindows versions available,
can't _someone!!_ quickly get an Ubuntu backport available?!]

This guy has a solution for 8.10: [see end of this email for basics]
How install Ekiga 3.0.1 on Ubuntu 8.10?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=3e827289947200322293759188346591t=1016174

So, I'd have to make time to
1) post to that thread asking howto for KU 8.4 hope someone figures
it out responds, or
2) start another thread with that title, hope someone figures it out
 responds, or
3) investigate how to find then find then communicate to the Ub
backports team to request it be made available in KU 8.4, etc etc etc.

Point: I'd have a much bigger learning curve than E's developers, it'd
take a lot of time, be much slower, I suspect, than if the E project
leaders, who are sw _developers_, did the (I suspect) _minor_ learning
curve necessary to get the distro packagers/backporters to get E3 into
the most highly _used_ distros, ie to the largest groups of _users_, so
the latest E sw could begin doing the world some more _good/use_. :)

[Ekiga-list] Ekiga 3 Status: Alpha, Beta or Gamma = end user released?

2009-01-24 Thread john_re
To: Leaders Developers of Ekiga:

I am confused by what appears to me to be inconsistent information on
the ekiga website.

1) The Ekiga website main page announces E 3 in the high profile manner
of a new gamma, End User version, release. This suggests the SW is
not alpha, nor beta, but something for _users_ (not developers or
testers).

2) The download page, though, only provides source code compile
instructions, not a binary version for the most popular Linux platforms.
This suggests the SW is for at best _developers or testers_, not end
users.

==
IMO, That is a majorly inconsistent message to the Ekiga _user_
community.

==
So, what level do the Ekiga project leader(s) consider the E 3 SW to be
at: Alpha, beta, or end user released?

Since you don't have a compiled versions available now, I suspect that
you believe the SW is not yet ready for release to the general (non
compile from sources) public. Is that correct?

==
If not end user released, I'd suggest that proper SW management
communication dictates that the main ekiga page prominently state in the
version 3 announcement that this SW is still in alpha or beta stage.

==
Thanks to all the developers. :)

[Ekiga-list] Ekiga Speaker wanted Jan 7 BerkeleyTIP via VOIP meeting- HowTo Compile E3 for KUbuntu 8.04

2009-01-24 Thread john_re
Hi Ekiga project Leaders, Developers, community. :)

I am looking for someone to give a talk about:
HowTo Compile Ekiga 3 for KUbuntu 8.04 (plus GNU(Linux) in general)

Might _you_ be interested in giving such a talk? Do you know someone
who might be? (If so, please pass this message on to them.)

==  DETAILS
The talk will be to the attendees of the BerkeleyTIP global monthly
meeting,
on February 7, 2009, Saturday,
preferably at 12N California, USA Pacific time, -8h GMT, (IIRC),
[= 3P EasternUS = 8PM GMT],
using the BTIP VOIP meeting system.

The speaker may give this talk from anywhere in the world, using their
VOIP technology.

== BerkeleyTIP BACKGROUND
BerkeleyTIP is a monthly global meeting about GNU(Linux), BSD all
Freedom SW HW. People can join the meeting using the VOIP conference.
We mostly use Ekiga SW the Ekiga.net VOIP meeting service.

I started this meeting in June 2008, have been gradually building it
up via announcements to LUGs SW group email lists. My current
announcements mostly go to the USA LUGs, plus Debian CLUG in South
Africa. Over the next several months I hope to get announcements to
European LUGS.

I'd expect perhaps 5-10 attendees at the main Berkeley location, plus
1-10 remote attendees via VOIP.

Everyone, everywhere in the world, is welcome to attend. The meeting is
Free, no charge.

== REASON FOR INTEREST IN THIS TALK
We have been mostly using Ekiga 2 SW. I see version 3 is out, would
like to get the BTIP community enabled to use version 3, if it has
important new features.

(One important feature we'll look into trying in the next several months
is video/webcam communication ability.)

== REASON FOR FOCUS ON KUBUNTU 8.4
Since I'm using KUbuntu 8.4, that's the distro I recommend to people,
I'd like to hear a talk focusing primarily on compiling getting E 3 to
work on that platform. But, some info about other distros would be
useful, too.

== LENGTH OF TALK SEGMENTS - APPROXIMATE
I envision a perfect talk including approximately:
10 min background on Ekiga, history present future,
10 min HowTo compile in general,
10 min specifics on compiling for KUbuntu 8.4
10 min audience compile QA,
10 min general QA discussion.

==
What questions do you have?
Are you interested in giving this talk?

Thanks :)

[Ekiga-list] Why no compiled Ek for Ubuntu, Linux, but is for NBSD, Win, OpSolaris?

2009-01-23 Thread john_re
It was a GNOME (= for linux) project.

That's just wondering, not a complaint. Thanks for all the work. :)
Just seems surprising that a linux version hasn't been a high enough
priority.

Thanks for letting us know about the use of Ekiga :-)

Thanks for all your work on Ekiga, Damien. :)

1) Is it OK for me to post a once or twice monthly announcement
regarding the BerkeleyTIP meeting to this list? Probably about 3 weeks
1 week ahead of time. It would note the meeting date, the
lecture/talks topics, maybe a few other significant items.

I posted the 1 week style announcement to this list just after the
message you responded to here. That's what it looks like.

List readers here might like to know about the meeting to: a) work on
improving or using Ekiga, especially in the ProgrammingParty
Installfest parts of the meeting, b) just learn or talk with other
members, in the other parts of the meeting.

An important part of the current ProgrammingParty part of the meeting is
to improve our knowledge of, the sw for, VOIP technology, to improve
the VOIP communication experience for people attending the meeting
wherever in the world they are.

2) Two of our local attendees at the Jan meeting had Apple Macs. What
is the time schedule, if any, for providing a Mac version of Ekiga?

3) About 1 or 2 months ago, a friend who know more about VOIP than I,
recommended I use the Ekiga 2 in KUbuntu 8.04, rather than E 3. In your
opinion, is E3 now more suitable for general VOIP use than E2?

Thanks. :)

[Ekiga-list] R2D2 VOIP Kubuntu 8.4 Ekiga, Ekiga.net voice conference

2009-01-06 Thread john_re
I'm having a problem getting a good clear output sidnal from Ekiga to a
VOIP conference call using the Ekiga.net free conference call system.

I'm told that each time I speak, my voice is clear intelligible for
about .5 - 2 seconds, but then it starts to be garbled, sounding like
the sounds R2D2 makes.

I've used 2 or three mic/headsets - two plug into my audio I/O sockets
on my laptop, one is a USB headset (but I'm not sure I tested the usb
headset properly, though a friend with the exact same usb headset, also
on KUbuntu 8.4, like myself, doesn't have the problem.)

My voice came through clearly in 1 on 1 conversations to a specific
person.

I'm told the problem lessens when I turn down the volume of my
microphone gain, but I can't recall if that always worked, or just
sometimes.

One key observation: It worked fine when I was alone, but all the times
I've had problems there have been others at the same table as myself who
were listening to the conference on laptop speakers - I suspect the
problem might be feedback from their speakers to my microphone - if so,
perhaps I can solve this by ensuring noone else nearby is in the
conference outputting through laptop speakers.

--
So, I just want to know if what I've described is a known issue, or if
this R2D2 sounding problem has never been noticed before.

/or if there is a know solution to this type of problem.

Thanks :)

Two great TALK TOPICS this month, one on the Asterisk Telephone/VOIP
system, and the other on GPUs - Graphics Processing Units (the hardware
in graphics cards) which can do general purpose computing.

The directed PROGRAMMING PARTY will be to investigate Asterisk Ekiga
with a goal to work on improving their technology for VOIP for the
BerkTIP-Global meeting. Undirected = work on whatever you're interested
in - what _is_ that? Post a message to the BTIP-Global list.

INSTALLFEST: Maybe several laptop installs/upgrades in Berkeley, KUbuntu
RH likely. What are _you_ looking to do? Post a message to the
BTIP-Global list.

DISCUSSION ITEMS: Lots of exciting things to talk about: New AMD Phenom
II out Jan 8th, 64bit GUI distros, Firefox multi instance. Is OpenOffice
in poor development shape? What's the best File System? Intel hires
Alan Cox. BTIP VOIP improvement features. And, planning for the 2009
year - What would be fun to try to accomplish this year? International
members? Better VOIP? Video conferencing? Live talks?
