All,

FWIW, we use the term roster in XMPP to refer to a contact list.

That's for that very reason it's named like that in ekiga ;-)

FYI, roster has a specific meaning in English.
It is a list that is rotated.
So you put up a roster to operate a school canteen for example.
Couple one does it on Monday couple two does it on tuesday etc.

May I suggest that copying somebodies bad use of a word does not make it
correct.

Just me being pedantic,
Brian

I have to add my agreement. XMPP and Ekiga have added a new definition
for the word roster that didn't previously exist. One would have to
have used XMPP and/or Ekiga, and done some research, in order to understand
what they mean by roster.

It's an inappropriate choice of word.

Ekiga will support XMPP at some point in the future ; there are still a
few things to clean up, but it's definitely almost possible.

[Ekiga-list] What is 'ekiga's internal roster'?

2009-01-06 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Hi all. Isn't 3.x great?! The contacts handling is much improved, but
there's this odd thing...

When I am in the 'Contacts' tab I can add a contact to 'ekiga's
internal roster'. I have English as my first language and can't make
sense of what a roster is in that context.

Here are the first four hits from google for 'define:roster'

# roll: a list of names; his name was struck off the rolls
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

# A roster can be a list of people and the times when they are
required to work. See schedule (workplace).
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roster

# A list of names, usually for an organisation of some kind such as
military officers and enlisted personnel enrolled in a particular
unit; a muster ...
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/roster

# A list of all players on a particular fantasy football team.
football.about.com/od/fantasyfootball/a/fantasyglossary.htm

This all sounds like something different from a list of people and
their contact details. I suggest a change to the wording. Why isn't it
just ekiga's internal 'contact list'?

Please let me know if I should file this as an RFE.

Heh, cool. Does Ekiga support any XMPP functionality? And will anyone
from the Ekiga team be at FOSDEM 2009?

No XMPP (yet).

from the Ekiga team be at FOSDEM 2009?

I'm not sure yet to be at FOSDEM this year because I'm moving...
