What do you mean with "silence suppression"? I couldnt find it. If it is
"Echo-Unterdrückung aktivieren", then I have there a hook already but it
doesnt help.

The skype "echo suppression" seems to work surprisingly well in
practice. My brother-in-law is making frequently calls using
skype and told me that both parties just use no headset, just
the webcam mike and normal speakers and there is almost no
echo noticeable.

still interested in comments, have very little time for research

Greetings,
Konrad

 Hi,

recently I have been forced to use skype and discovered that they

have a quite well working echo suppressor. (my vis-a-vis used no
headset, only normal speakers and the microphone from the Logitech
 QuickCam pro 9000)

I think the algorithm skype uses is quite simple: whenever sound

is coming from the other party and being output they just mute the
mike. Sometimes there are audible artifacts but it much better than
nothing. While I did not know about the pc speakers I was thinking
she/he used a head set until being told thats a simple speaker.

This means that its not easy to interrupt the vis-a-vis

while she/he is speaking w/o pauses, skype seems to use a rather
short time constant for muting the mike.

Perhaps there could be some audio threshold above which the

microphone could be enabled unconditionally so some loud
speak will make it to the other party.

I did not try with both parties using speakers so far, perhaps this

 is asking for trouble...

 Comments welcome.

Wouldn't you get the same result if you enable silence suppression in
Ekiga ?

I think this won't help. If I enable silence suppression then transmission
stops if the backgroud noise is below a certain level (pls correct me if
I am wrong, just guessing from a few experiments some days ago)

If you use no headset then the audio from the speakers will find its way
into the mike with sufficient level to produce very noticeable echos. My
guess about skype behavior is that skype just reduces mic gain (or even
mutes it completely) whenever sound is being output from skype to the
external speaker(s).

Thus it may be difficult to interrupt a speaker who makes little
pauses but my impresson was that skype behaves much like a normal desktop
speakerphone if used w/o headset and there were only little audible
artifacts, mostly if both parties began to speak at about the same time.
One of them would "win" in this scenario.

Konrad

Then it is probably really the difference between
the Skype echo cancelling and Ekiga echo cancelling.
Skype works better for you.

There is no such thing, Ekiga simply uses different
echo cancelling. It can appear in Ekiga if somebody
implements Skype-like cancelling to Ekiga

BTW I had the same feeling from Skype echo cancelling
as Konrad mentions, ie that it muted the mic when the
other side was talking. Personally I prefer Ekiga
canceller because in Skype I had sometimes problems
to interrupt the other side and it lead to some voice
choppiness. Using separate microphone though. May
be different otherwise.

> By the way I use Ekiga only to make calls from pc to phone and I use

If you use Ekiga to make pc to phone calls then it
would certainly make sense to use a headset. My
setup is a separate sound device with headset for
pc->phone calls and separate sound device without
headset for pc->pc phones via Ekiga and all works
fine.

These are the names of channels. You can try to open

playback does not affect your voice transmitted to

adjusts the channels levels so that might be the
reason why you have lower echo with it. And might
not.
