Page 62 of the KX-1 manual recommends Sony MDR or equivalent with a

I think you are refering to "The Plug" by Koss.
Many sites are selling them including ebay.

Re: [Elecraft] MD2 resistor mod - a different approach?

2004-11-23 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Tom and all,

There is a solution to using a mic requiring the 5 volts (through a
resistor) and switching to a mic that does not need it which does NOT
require the resistor to be in the mic plug.

Wire the resistor at the mic jack between pins 5 and 6 (pin 5 = FUNC which
is not used), then in the mic plug for the microphone(s) needing the 5
volts, add a jumper from pin 5 to pin 1. The mic jack will have only AF on
pin 1, and will have +5 volts through the resistor on pin 5.

When wired this way, your Elecraft mic will work on other K2s wired for the
standard Elecraft mic, but another standard Elecraft mic will not work on
your K2.

Additional note - if NONE of your mics have the UP and DOWN buttons
implemented, you can use pins 3 and 4 for any purpose you wish - including
piping the +5 volts on one of these pins instead of pin 5.

I want to be able to switch between my MD2 mic which needs DC applied to the

I'm not sure I could fit the resistor that comes with the MD2 inside the
female connector at the mic side so I'm looking into connecting pins 6 and 1
together in the female mic connector and putting the resistor in SERIES
with the 5 VDC line going to pin 6 at the male end of the jack.

When the MD2 is plugged in the AF line would get DC applied through the
dropping resistor in the 5 volt line. When I plug in the Proset Plus pin 1
is just audio and no DC applied.

Does anyone see a problem with doing it this way? I know you won't be able
to pull a lot from the 5 volt line after this mod but I don't plan on
powering anything else off of the mic connector.Also...I would not be
able to plug my mic into someone else's K2 as it would put the unlimited
5VDC line directly to my mic element. I practice safe microphoning and
never insert my mic into any other K2 except my own so I'm not concerned in
either case.

re:[Elecraft] KX1 SWR limits: general discussion [+ bonus LED

2004-11-23 Thread Michael Babineau

From practical experience I can second Wayne's recommendation of a
near vertical 24 foot end fed wire for use with the KX1.

This is what I used for an antenna for most of the summer, along with
5 X 16 ft ground radials made from computer ribbon cable and I had no
problems in matching it with the KXAT1.
I also had very good results, including working a Lighthouse
station in the Orkney's on 20M one afternoon on International
Lighthouse / Lightship weekend.

I did find that I tend to get a better match on 40M with the wire
mostly vertical

(ie sloping it seems to change the impedance enough to make the match a
bit iffy). I also found that if you are not too picky about 40m you can
make do with
a slightly shorter wire, say 20ft, which goes very nicely with an SD-20
or
Blackwidow fishing pole as a lightweight support (I hate to rely on
mother nature
for antenna supports). One of these days I will try to figure out how
much additional
series inductance is needed to make a 20ft wire load nicely on 40M with
the KXAT1.

I just tie a snap fishing swivel to one end of the wire to clip on the
loop at the end of

the pole and put a banana plug on the other end.

Hi Jerry,

Do not install R6 at this point in he construction process, even though it
is shown in the illustration. You are instructed to install it later after
the unit is assembled and tested. If you put it in now, you won't be able to

Very interesting and nice job, Dave. My guess is that the cost of fabricating
the baffle, etc. made it too expensive? I have thought about an EC2-cased
speaker that would have a top-firing 4" speaker and a front-firing 2" speaker
with a crossover network. Since the high frequencies are much more directional,
this would avoid the need to have a baffle (although the speaker would have to
have clearance on top).

I have a few questions about the mic preamp on the Elecraft website.

What type of capacitors should I use?

I assume the .0047 caps are .0047 uF (aka 4.7 nF)?

I'm thinking about building this onto a small board with a header that
will plug onto the mic config header inside the K2. Will this affect the
quality of RTTY/PSK31/etc signals transmitted through the mic connector?
Am I better off building this externally?

RE: [Elecraft] KX-1/MP-1 SWR limits

2004-11-23 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Be very careful to wash the antenna, insulators and exposed coils and
connections with fresh water and dry them after each use. It only takes a
couple of hours to build up a layer of conductive salt crust on any exposed
surface, even when it's way above the water line. That "bracing" salt air
you smell everywhere is suspended droplets of salt water looking for things
to condense upon.

On old MF radio installations on large ships, the antenna feed-through
insulators above the radio room up at or above the navigating bridge level
(near the very top of the "house" on a ship) and were usually six inches or
so around and a foot or more long, with all the ripples to make the surface
distance from the hot lead to the ship as long as possible. Still, it was a
necessary duty for Sparky to constantly clean them or the salt accumulation
would short the RF right to ground.

[Elecraft] KX-1/MP-1 SWR limits

2004-11-23 Thread Fred Jensen
Thanks for all the responses -- I have quite a few things to work on.
To summarize the thread:

1. Use at least one ground radial. I have been using the radials that
come with the MP-1, but I notice that things change a bit (like more rx
noise, or Z changes) when I grab the case of the KX-1 or 259. I'm
planning on clamping the antenna to the rail of the "balcony" (aka
"shelf") on the ship hoping that will provide enough ground. I'm taking
some wire with me as Plan "B".

2. I think I'm going to revisit my idea of marking the coil positions
and not taking some sort of SWR measuring device. It's pretty obvious
now that marks made using 4 wire radials on a deck made of Trex are not
likely to be very good when the real ground is a 1,000 passenger, steel
boat in salt water! The "Tenna Dipper" may be the ticket, and easier
than finding a big steel boat in N. Cal. to test with.

3. Coax length to transform the impedance: This was a good call from
W3FPR. N6BV's TLW (on the CD in the 20th ed ARRL Antenna Book) will
help me investigate this from the warmth of the shack. I may take a
couple or three different lengths of RG-58 if I can figure this out.

4. And Wayne's reminder to me that the ATU tunes in steps rather than
continuous may be another key here. A small change in the complex Z at
the antenna connector might move the match point in the ATU closer to
one of the attainable values.

Fortunately, I have some time before we steam off.

Again, thanks for all the responses

Fred,

I've had pretty good luck on 20 with MP-1 bolted onto an neck-strapped
FT-817, but I have to hold onto the radio or use a counterpoise. I
suspect your trouble is that a KX1 and its attached wires are too small
to give a low feedpoint impedance. You will need a counterpoise (15 or
16 feet) to help with this. Even one counterpoise will give the tuner
something to work into.

Have yet to try my (used, assembled) K1 with an MP1, however, the K1
manual points out that 2:1 or 3:1 SWR is not going to make much difference.

Questions:

1. Any ideas on what is an "acceptable" (in terms of actually being
able to work someone) SWR for the KX1?

2. As with all antennas, I can tune the antenna for a variety of
resistances and reactances. I've been shooting for an impedance
magnitude of around 50 ohms. Possibly some combination of R and X is
more optimum?

It's getting a bit chilly here in N. Cal. to spend time on the deck

will save me from the cold.

[Elecraft] 2 good ideas

2004-11-23 Thread Steve Jackson
1. Bill 'LR recently wrote, in part:

"I think I could prefer a menu item to select the VOX
delay, and just have the mode-hold toggle the VOX on
and off."

Bill is right. While handing out all 12 of my Qs for
the rare NC section ;-) during the 'phone SS, I found
myself wishing for exactly this functionality.

Wish I could flash my PIC to do this.

2. I recently built an adapter box to allow the use
of my aviation headset on my K2. The schematic in the
Dec. 2003 QST shows how, but has a major error in that
it shows the aviation mic jack as having the audio on
the jack tip as opposed to the ring connector. The
jack tip is actually for a PTT line for those headsets
that have such an extension, and the ring is the mic.

After I saw this error and fixed it, the adaptobox
works great. It's much better than any ham-type
headset I've ever used. I also now can use the K2
VOX, the performance of which now rivals any of the
best JA rigs' VOX in my experience.

In fact, I am so pleased with the SSB function on my
K2 now that I am considering doing some of the
recently discussed TX filter mods. I previously
viewed the SSB function on the rig as a
nice-to-have-but-who-cares feature, perhaps due to my
natural preference for running a Portland ME built
Vibroplex Iambic Standard as the wetware I/O. With
this new level of K2 SSB operating quality now at my
disposal, I might actually start working more 'phone!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #4039 Headphone Socket - Replacement needed, UK supplier?

2004-11-23 Thread k4zm

Nicolas:

I have had two K2's sent to me for replacement of the headphone jack and on
both units I found that they were not soldered properly. They both had
worked for several months and then became intermittent. I soldered the
connections again and let the solder flow into the connections and both of
the units no longer had a problem with the jack not working. The leads out
of the socket are not long enough to extend out on the bottom side of the
board so installing the jack requires that you take a little longer to
solder each connection so that the solder will wick down to the jack pin.
You might try reheating the connections on the bottom of the board and add
solder to let it flow into the connection. My K2 is serial number 18 and
the jack still functions fine.

[Elecraft] KX-1 pouch

2004-11-23 Thread Richard Arland
Wal-Mart (who else?) has a very nice little travel pouch for the KX-1 at a
grand total cost of only $4.94! The pouch is sold as a "photo bag" by
Samsonite, product number 805BK. It has five pockets, is padded and has enough
room for the KX-1 and paddle set, along with a hank of wire for an antenna and
counterpoise and the Pamona connector for the output. At under $5 it is a steal
of a deal.

[Elecraft] KX-1 s/n 0914 ON THE AIR!!

2004-11-23 Thread Richard Arland

Gang:

Last week I finished KX-1 s.n 00914 (including all options)! It is a great
little rig and far surpasses my expetations! Good work Eric & Wayne!

First QSO went to Fran, K3BX, ;who says it sounded great. He came over the
next evening, looked it over quite thoroughly and muttered something about
'having to get me one of these!"

We both marvle at the touch and "feel" of the paddle set. For such a simple
design it rivals several paddle sets I have paid over $200 for, now that is
engineering at its best!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #4039 Headphone Socket - Replacement needed, UK supplier?

2004-11-23 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Morning Nicolas,

I had exactly the same fault. Searched high and low in the UK and the rest
of Europe for a replacement with the switch but no luck. So I finally had to
order one from Elecraft. The cost of shipping was a heck of a lot more than
the cost of the headphone socket, and I wish now that I had ordered two or
three as it is a bit flimsy. I received it within a few days with Lisa's
help.

Hope that this helps,

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can suggest a UK supplier for the K2’s headphone
socket. Mine no longer switches the internal speaker on and sometimes
makes a poor connection to the headphones. Close internal inspection
revealed that one of the plastic lugs on the “rear switch” had broken
away. So the headphone socket was no longer sliding the rear switch
across.
I have tried Maplin’s and RS, I could find the correct basic socket but
not one with the rear switch.

Thanks!!!

Nicolas

Re: **SPAM** Re: [Elecraft] SSB low output

2004-11-23 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Top of the head thought, I wonder if it is only the late model K2s that have
to be "talked up". If so, it might have something to do with manufacturing
tolerances of the audio ICs. Would be interesting to get a yes - no roll
call from all K2 SSB users that use Heil mics.

I also use a scope to look at the output, and found that I have to talk
across the top of the Proset Plus boom mic for best results - as is usually
done. Also I have a "quiet" voice (according to the XYL - "what? Speak up")

Glad to hear, Brian, that things are on the mend.
