[Elecraft] CW Keying characteristics-computer vs Bencher

2004-12-12 Thread Ralph McClintock
I finally hooked up my computer keying circuit, 2N off the parallel port,
to my K2 before the CQWW contest. I have noticed what appears to be a
significant difference in the keying characteristic from the computer versus
the keying from the Bencher key. The computer appears to have a significantly
harder characteristic than the Bencher. This is observed in the sidetone as I
have not checked it with a 2nd receiver. Has anyone else noticed this
phenomenon?

[Elecraft] SLA Battery charge Level

2004-12-12 Thread Steven Pituch
I said:
When the battery is exactly at 13.8 volts, there would be
no current.

Bob, G3VVT said:
In practice found over the many systems worked on professionally this is
not entirely correct.

However if one monitors the battery over a longer period after the float
charge period has started the battery will start to take a small charge that
eventually settles on the 25 to 50 mA region for small SLA's. It all depends
on the float voltage and the size of the SLA, but with a float voltage of
13.8V and a 12V SLA does definitely occur.
---

Yes, I was over-simplifying it. But a battery at 13.8 Volts will not take a
charge with a 13.8 Volt source. What happens I assume is that the battery
discharges a bit so it is lower than 13.8 Volts, and then the trickle charge
commences.
--
John said:
1) The total charging time using your method would probably be longer than
forcing 1.6 amps until the terminal voltage reached 14.2. But it might also
be healthier for the battery.
--
Yes it will take a lot longer (overnight), and not overheat the battery, but
this is how the original Powersonic recommendations were in the 1990s. I
imagine they have changed.
---
John said:
2) If the SLA voltage got below 10.5 volts, you might initially draw more
than 1.6 amps, unless your 14.39 volt power supply is limited to
1.6 amps.
---
Yes this is true. But the powersonic web sight had recommendations for the
amount of drain a _gell_ cell would take before it was permanently damaged.
It might have been 10 or 10.5 volts. I think I chose 10.5 volts in my
design, so the batteries would not suffer from over-discharging. I also
monitored the voltage discharge during use so I would not damage the
batteries.
---
John said:
I'm in the process of building a computer-controlled
(PIC-controlled) SLA charger to enter into my local QRP club's annual
builders' contest next Spring
---
This is very exciting. Please let us know about the results. If you could
leave the divice in the circuit during use you could design it to warn the
user when the voltage of the battery was getting near the danger point.
--- --

I have had some requests for my circuit. Actually the ideas might help John
in his design too. I will post the info on my website soon and let the list
know.

Here in the Pacifc Northwest, we've also added a twist: we've been

start of SKN (4p here) to midnight (0800z) with most of the activity in
the 5p-7p range. We have a solid VHF contesting fraternity here, so it's
a real hoot! We're a real friendly bunch, and having so many folks
clustered around the same freqs really turns it into a party. So, if

Dan,
I am referring exactly to weight. Yes, the K2 has a weight adjustment but
it does not, or should not, know the difference between the Bencher key and
the keying from the computer running Writelog that is paralleled onto the
same wire going into the key input. The computer input is run through 1N914
or equivalent diodes. My K2/100 has the key click mod but that should not
make any difference in this case. Why the difference is in weight is my
question.

Harder usually refers to keying envelope shape. The differences I'd
expect
from the two keying methods you've described would have to do with
Weight
 (length of the elements).

To which issue are you referring?

The K2 keyer weight is adjustable, but it's CPU has other duties and might
sometimes miss it's timing window. (Not a the speeds I can run, I assure

If you are using a Bencher paddle then you are using the internal keyer, which
generates the CW elements and sets the weight. Writelog generates the CW
elements itself and keys the K2 as though it were a straight key. The K2's
autodetect circuit allows you to activate your internal keyer with the paddle
while treating the computer interface as a straight key.

I am building a KPA100 and intend to remote this into a separate EC2
 enclosure along with
  the KAT 100
My K2 does not have a K102 control board.
Can I do the remote installation using the K102 on the pa board ? The
 notes I downloaded
seemed to suggest that the k102 needs to be in the K2 .

I looked at this also, as I am in the process of building a KPA100 which I
intend to remote. I don't have the KIO2 in my K2.

When the KPA100 is in a separate enclosure, the RS232 interface in the
KPA100 will not work as it doesn't get the data in/out from the K2's
processor. Instead the KIO2 does the translation to RS232. Therefore,
without the KIO2, you can get the KPA100 to work remotely, but you will
not
 get an RS232 interface.

If all you want is to get the KPA100 to work, you will have to do the
 following:

 - Install an RS232 connector in the K2/QRP lid
 - Connect GND to pin 5
 - Connect AUXBUS to pin 6 (KIO2 has 15 uH in series and 0.001 uF to GND)
 - Connect VRFDET to pin 7
 - Connect 12V to pin 8
 - Connect 8R to pin 9 (KIO2 has 3.9k in series)

These connections shall be taken from connector P4 (Aux I/O) on the K2's
control board. Alternatively, if the KAT2 is installed, all but 8R can be
 taken from it.

I haven't tried this myself, but there shouldn't be too many uncertainties
in this. However, the cost/effort of getting an KIO2, is not that much
greater than doing the above, so I am still debating with myself whether
it
 is worth trying.

Ralph,

There is little to nothing that one can do to alter the keying waveshape
from the outside of the K2, so you are likely hearing something different
than the keying waveshape.

How does the computer program handle the keying 'weight' - I would expect
that to be the difference you hear. Change the weighting characteristic

in

the program to something different (if the program allows you to change

it)

just to see - and then set whatever you desire.

Ralph W1ZK

Which is it - the RF waveform (hard) or the keying weight? You've already
said I am referring exactly to weight. Hard/soft by convention refer to the
sound of the RF waveshape, heavy/light refers to the on/off ratio (weight).
You're mixing terminology and confusing the issue.

Keying weight is a function of they keyer. As has already been explained, when
you use a paddle, you're using the K2's internal keyer, and consequently get
the weight for which that is set; the K2 is making the dots and dashes. The
Bencher generates _two_ opens/grounds, and is telling the K2 to make a dot or a
dash. As far as the K2 is concerned, the computer is just a straight key, so
any weight (and speed) is a function of the computer program you're using.
The K2 has nothing to do with the dots and the dashes, it's just making RF when
it sees key down. A difference is to be expected, both in weight and speed -
you're comparing two different keyers (the K2's vs. the Writelog's).

Re: [Elecraft] CW Keying characteristics-computer vs Bencher

2004-12-12 Thread designer

Ralph,
Another, or an again way of saying what has been said is:
You are assuming that the K2 sees the Bencher and computer keying as
the same. If that were the case, they would bethe same.

The K2 does NOT see the Bencher and the computer as the same. It sees
the Bencher as triggering the K2's internal keyer and applies what
ever weighting that implies. It sees the computer as a straight key
so the dit/dah ratio is what ever you apply sending by hand. Except
it is not your hand that is sending. It's the computer software
program. So the weighting of of the computer program controls its
keying ratio when sending by keyboard and the weighting of the K2's
internal keyer controls the Bencher ratio when sending by paddle.

The Knightlites Milliwatt 'test is coming up. Sounds like fun. Was checking out my K2 at
low outputs to see if there are any problems. Got a problem.

When I set the tx below about 1/2 watt I get no output. Appears to work reliably at 0.5w
but not below that. Works most all the time at 0.4w. If I set it to 0.1w, which is what
I'd like to use, it may work for a while.

Pressing 'Tune' when set to 0.1w kills it consistantly. I can set pwr to 0.1w and press
the paddles and it will (usually) continue to work for a while, then die.

I haven't dug into it yet to check the ALC circuitry but am wondering if anyone else is
having this problem. Did a Google which turned up nothing, so must not be too common.

Even when there is no output the K2 power indicator shows 0.1 or 0.2 or 0.3 (it alternates
between these) but an external meter correctly shows no output.

Thanks for the BW.

Re: [Elecraft] Problems with display on initial alignment

2004-12-12 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Pete,

Display problems like that are often caused by partially soldered
connections to the LCD.
The pins barely protrude through the circuit board holes and it is easy to
get the solder to fill the hole without heating the LCD pin adequately for
solder to properly adhere to the pin.
I would suggest you re-solder the LCD pins from the top side of the board,
making certain that the solder flows on the pin as well as the PC board.

To repeat -- first check soldering, then re-check soldering, and when you
have finished, check the soldering!!! (that fixes most problems).

I wonder if anyone has come up with a similar happening on the first
alignment (Panel, control board and partial main board) I had
intermitant problems when I first put it together, so I dismantled it
and checked for bad joints, component values, etc. I found I had not
soldered a switch. That put right I put it all back together again. And
it almost worked. DISPLAY did not bring up the voltage/current values.
Tapping menu several times brings up a menu but its behavior is must
odd. Tapping menu again returns to the band and tuning is OK for a few
seconds, rate also works.then up comes menu all on its own. Lots of
garbled numbers on the display looks like its switching between menu and

band very rapidly. I have no messages, Elecraft comes up OK then this
happens. I've had it apart several times looking for problems, but I'm
darned if I can see any. could a component failure cause this wierd
behavior?

Any help would be most appreciated, 73,

Re: [Elecraft] CW Keying characteristics-computer vs Bencher

2004-12-12 Thread Ralph McClintock
Don,
Everything here is iambic paddles. I haven't used a hand key since 1962,
Hi. The Writelog program does not permit key weighting. I did some more
checking and discovered that bringing the K2 weight down to it's lowest
value of 0.90, it was at 1.10, makes it closer. There is still a difference,
though not as bad, between computer and internal K2 keyer. I wish I could go
below 0.90.
Thanks for the help,

 Ralph,

Is your Bencher a keyer, or is it just paddles?

If it is a keyer, it will generate its own weighting which may be
different
than the weighting generated by Writelog

OTOH, if your Bencher is a paddle (as I suspect), it activates uses the
dot
and dash lines as input to the internal K2 keyer - that internal keyer is
what determines the weighting from the paddle.
Writelog forms the dots and dashes and sends its own version of 'proper'
weighting to the K2. The K2 recognizes the input from the computer as a
hand key type input (through the two diodes), and will not alter the
length
of the dots or dashes nor the spacing.

Bottom line, if you can't change the weighting in Writelog, you will
either
have to settle for what you get, or set the K2 keyer weighting to match
 whatever Writelog is using.

  Don,
The computer generates an on-off. Writelog does not allow any adjustment
  of
keying characteristics. The Bencher generates an open or ground. Why
does
the K2 recognize the Bencher, a mechanical switch, as soft and why does
it
  recognize the computer as hard?

  Ralph,

There is little to nothing that one can do to alter the keying
waveshape
from the outside of the K2, so you are likely hearing something
different
  than the keying waveshape.

How does the computer program handle the keying 'weight' - I would
expect
that to be the difference you hear. Change the weighting
characteristic
  in
the program to something different (if the program allows you to change
  it)
just to see - and then set whatever you desire.

I finally hooked up my computer keying circuit, 2N off the parallel

be
  a
significant difference in the keying characteristic from the computer
  versus
the keying from the Bencher key. The computer appears to have a
significantly harder characteristic than the Bencher. This is observed
in
the sidetone as I have not checked it with a 2nd receiver. Has anyone

[Elecraft] #4595 Progress

2004-12-12 Thread Ed
Good evening everyone.

Finished the control board for K2 #4595 and all looks good.I think. I have
Pin 13 on U6 and Pin 15 and 16 on U8 showing 0.F on the DMM with the Megohm
scale. From the archives this appears to be common with some DMM's when the
resistance is infinite. The meter is on auto-range and with these three pins
the decimal doesn't even budge, just no change at all just like the meter was
just turned on and the test leads not in use.

So with this being said I presume all is well. I have checked the soldering,
rechecked the soldering and checked it again.

Any thoughts?

Ed, N0EHQ

PS, finished the front panel and all the checks were in the green.

[Elecraft] K2 for sale

2004-12-12 Thread Wingkeel
K2, serial number 4275 is for sale. I built this unit about six months ago
and now want to build another kit. This K2 comes with the following options
installed:
KIO2 – Aux I/O Module with cable
KNB2 – Noise Blanker
KBT2 – Internal Battery Option
KAF2 – Audio Filter and Real Time Clock
KAT2 – Automatic Antenna Tuner
Everything works well and is ready to go. This unit does not even have
scratches yet. I would like to get $1100 for this unit. I am an experienced
technician with decades of experience, so this was was not my first rodeo. If
you
are just starting out and need everything, I have like new accessories:
antenna, power supply, quiet headphones paddles, key and other goodies we can
negotiate on.

[Elecraft] remote KPA100 summary

2004-12-12 Thread David Toepfer
--- David Toepfer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I was wondering how I could build a K2 and keep it light and QRP portable
without having to actually remove the amp every time I wanted to move it.

Puting a KPA100 and a KAT100-2 in EC2 case, is that possible?

--- Bill Flynn AIØC [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Lyle Johnson, KK7P (ex-WA7GXD), has done this. He's written it all up on an
excellent Web page that you can view at
http://www.fidalgo.net/~wa7gxd/k2kpa100.html.

--- Paul Clay [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Has anyone implemented Lyle Johnson's (KK7P's) suggested method (see
http://www.fidalgo.net/~wa7gxd/k2kpa100.html#NOKIO2) of running a K2 and
KAT-100 combo without an
installed KIO2 (or KPA-100)?

--- Sverre Holm [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The question of the KPA-100 external to the K2 surfaces from time to time, and
there are two descriptions of how it can be done. To find them you may check
the Unofficial K2 Modifications page at www.qsl.net/la3za/K2/mod.html, go to
General mods and then KPA100.

--- Tom Hammond [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please visit:

http://www.fidalgo.net/~wa7gxd/k2kpa100.html

For (I think) all the info you should require on this subject

--- Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, it IS do-able and has been done. In fact, I just received my EC2
enclosure and am about to do it myself. Check out
http://www.fidalgo.net/~wa7gxd/k2kpa100.html to see how.

In addition to the external enclosure, you will need the KIO2 option in your
base K2 so it can communicate with the external KPA100.

--- Bob Nielsen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is it recommended to integrate the KPA100 with the K2 and get it all working
together before remoting it in the EC2?

--- Lyle Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the initial KPA-100 checkout, I had mine laying upside-down on a thick book
(must have been a Windows tome...) with the cables plugged into the open-top
K2.

Once the KPA100 is checked out in this fashion, cal done, etc., I don't think
it matters which box you put it in.

--- Eric Manning [EMAIL PROTECTED]

YES! That way, if any little glitches pop up when you remote the KPA-100, you
can eliminate a lot of possibilities up front. For instance, if there are
communication problems when it's remoted but
it's OK when in the single box, you can focus on the RS-232 path between the
two microprocessors . It's just the same principle of building a piece of the
kit, then testing it before building any more, which Elecraft always follows.

--- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My question for those who have gone through this is if there is a recommended
order of construction that makes integration and/or check-out of the various
components easieror more logical.

--- Lyle Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes,

1) Build the KPA-100 into the K2 and see that it works.

2) Build the KAT-100 in the EC2 case, connect it to the K2/100, and see that it
works.

3) Build the KIO2, remove the KPA-100, and verify the K2/KAT-100 combination
works.

4) Put the KPA-100 into the EC2 with the KAT-100 and verify it all works.

--- Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, do the KIO2 first, but check out the instructions for mounting the
KPA100 in the EC2 while you are building it - the inductors on the KIO2
connector/header board must be changed to toroids or other chokes that will
carry the additional current.

Other than that, I can think of no other particular order, but you may want
to build the KPA100 before the KAT100 so you can check out the tuner at full
power.

--- Bill Acito W1PA [EMAIL PROTECTED]

fyi, consensus (6 or 7 emails) seemed to be

if you want to swap back and forth from a QRP to the 100W version of the K2,
then mounting the
KPA100 (and KAT100) in a seperate EC2 is the way to go. Most (not all) who
responded found swapping the lids tedious, and dangerous (possibly dropping a
heavy lid into the K2)

--- Bill Acito W1PA [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, and was still described as faster and safer.

http://www.qsl.net/la3za/K2/modAny.html#KPA100

--- JEAN-FRANCOIS MENARD [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now I have updated my website about building a KPA100 and KAT100 in the same
enclosure, as advertised by Elecraft with the KAT100-2.

See my link: http://homepage.mac.com/jfmenard/PhotoAlbum29.html

Comments or questions are welcome !!!

--- Bob Nielsen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You will need a KIO in addition to the EC2, KPA100 and KAT100-2. You can find
full information on KK7P's website at
http://www.fidalgo.net/~wa7gxd/k2kpa100.html.

If you need more photos of that setup, look at my website... I did
thing setup 2 weeks ago. Very easy with the latest version of the
KAT-100-2.
