It is possible to separate the front panel and the RF board, but since
I rarely do so, it isn't much of a problem.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for December 19th, 2004

2004-12-19 Thread Kevin Rock

Hello All,
This evening was not very good for my reception. Without Tom's help I
would only have three folks on this list. I heard a few of the others but
I do not know if we could have exchanged much more than call signs. The
QSB was quite deep on 20 meters but the noise was the biggest problem on
40 meters. I only heard Tom and Peter on 40 so the relays were
important. Tom was in a cold shack so I shooed him back into where it is
warm and have not received the information from him yet. Tomorrow I may
just have to post another list with the ?? areas filled in. I need to get
that 80 meter antenna up so we can try that band soon.

Spent most of the weekend building K2 #4595. Performed the PLL reference
oscillator range test. The result was 8.0 khz., 1.8 khz. lower than the

can figure out what's going on in the innards of this little bugger.

[Elecraft] KPA100 voltages

2004-12-19 Thread Earl Ritchie
I am building a KPA100 and page 41 shows res to gnd at J3 red, Q1 & Q2
collectors as >10,000 ohms Mine is 128 ohms and Gary says his is only 350 .
OK The voltage chart says to check at 14v DC in and 10 watt setting or less.
I get Q6 D=72v but if I turn up the power control the voltage goes to .6 where
it should be. Q8 is similar on the coll I get 56 v but turning up the power
brings it down to 6v (s.b. 11)
There is no output from this unit and one thing to check is T4. Am I reading
this wrong . I wound T4 according to page 27 where one wire is designated 1,2
the other 3,4 but the schematich shows one as 1,3 the other as 2,4
The other voltage differenmce that I have is on U7 where pin 3 is 3.6v(s.b.14)
and pins 5&6 are 0 (s.b. .68) Mayabe I have a bad IC
Any comments or suggestions. Thank you

RE: [Elecraft] Is it possible to monitor digital transmissions.

I have a cable built up for a K2 to run digital wired for manual transmit
without the vox on, or with. Interfaces to the sound card inputs. I will be
happy to send it to you free. All you need after that is one of the software
programs to run the PSK, RTTY and so forth. If you cannot hear the computer
or the receive, then just use a splitter for the input to the computer.

Hi Jerry,

I can't imagine running PSK without PSKmeter
(http://www.ssiserver.com/info/pskmeter/). After reading about it in
QST last February, I ordered and built the kit.

PSKmeter is a essential one-trick-pony for PSK ops. Very neat. I have
built and use 2 of them.

There is also another product out there "IMD Meter" out there, but I
have never seen or used one.

Seasons greetings to all,

[Elecraft] Leads to 2SC1969

2004-12-19 Thread DR
OKI'm really in a pickle now. After my third attempt to re- install the
2PA transistors Q7 and Q8 so that I can put the heat sink on I managed to
stress the leads so much that they are either broken off after the bend or
they are near to the point of breaking. Would it be ok if I just solder a
wire lead to the hole through point then solder a lead to the remaining leg
on the 2SC 1969's???
Thanks any advice would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] BFO test frequency out of range

2004-12-19 Thread Craig Marscin

Hi everyone!

I have been building SN 4078, and all has gone smoothly so far. The
radio is finished and works (except for the problem below) as do the SSB
and DSP options. I have been chasing one problem for a while however.
When I did the BFO test the BFO Low Freq came in as 4911.23 which is
ok. The high freq was only 4915.77, a bit short from the 4916.3 it is
supposed to be. I have replaced C173 and C174 with diffrent caps (same
value), confermed L33 is working properly and isn't shorted to
anything. I even removed it from its spot (kept it hooked up) and it
didn't make a sizeable change. The voltages at U11 pin six was 5.89 and
pin seven was 5.3 which are within tolerance. The DC voltages
everywhere else seem reasonable. The AC voltages anywhere I could
measure seemed reasonable. One intresting thing to note is the BFO
chrystals seem to be the wrong frequency. They are labled ECS V
4.9136-S Korea G3. This is diffrent then what the instruction manual
states they should be labled. The remaining chrystals on the board,
except the VFO, are ECS V 4.9136 -S Korea J3. A little diffrent labling
but same frequency. I have confirmed the rest of the chrystals on the
board are correct. I could be totally off track with the chrystal
idea... Can anyone confirm it or give me ideas as to what I might have
done wrong?

I love this radio, but when I transmit on the upper sideband it doesn't
suppress the carrier at all (lower sideband is fine). I believe this
problem is the result of the problem above since I couldn't set the USB
filters correctly.

Thanks
Craig

[Elecraft] MD-2 Micrphone

2004-12-19 Thread Tom Mc
I took advantage of the reduced prices and ordered the MD-2 and CB-1
microphone and base for my K2. They arrived and certainly look and feel
very nice, but no surprises there.

I have a couple of questions, anyone can be of help with them, I appreciate
hearing from you:

1)I also have the Elecraft/Heil hand mic and was able to install the
5.6k resistor into the mic plug, rather than into the K2. This worked out
fine and now I can use other mics and data sources (I use a RigBlaster for
psk31)with the K2. Has anyone tried to put the 5.6k resistor into the plug
of the MD-2 and is their anything special I should know?

2) I seem to have an 'extra' part that came with the order. It is a piece
of metal about 3/4 inch long, threaded with standard screwdrivers slots at
each end. It's not immediately obvious to me were this goes. (And I forget
if it came with the microphone or the base.)

3) I really like the idea the there is a the jack for a footswitch. Does
anyone have a source where I can pick up a switch?

4) Also, along the same lines as the footswitch, is there an 'always on'
position on the PTT switch on the mic ?(I haven't actually used the mic yet
because I haven't yet installed the resistor).

Thanks for your help and have a nice holiday season,

Tom McCulloch

How much higher? You seem to imply that a 1/2" screw isn't long enough? The
screw goes through the PC Board (~1/16"), a fiber washer (<1/16), a 1/8
standoff, a shoulder washer (<1/16), the transistor tab (<1/16), insulator and
heatsink (~1/16); total ~3/8, leaving plenty of thread.

A "2D" fastener is about 1/4, which should be very close to the fiber washer
(<1/16), a 1/8 standoff, shoulder washer (<1/16), the transistor tab (<1/16),
and insulator.

[Elecraft] K2 MOJO Back in the Box

2004-12-19 Thread Mike Walkington
Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions re recovering from a loss of receive audio. I
took all the modules out, put them back and the K2 mojo came back. I'm
still baffled about what occurred, but hey I'm not complaining.

I finally got around to building the KAT100 over the past week - wow isn't
it like magic when you are building an Elecraft kit and the various parts
suddenly come together and you can see the end result. For the KAT100 for me
this occurred when I bolted the RF board to the front panel.

Happy Holidays
