[Elecraft] 255 with K2

2005-02-24 Thread Indy
255 countries with the K2, DXCC on 10 through 40, 38 on 80, a dozen including
intercontinental on 160... many of them were during the sunspot peak in 2000
which does make it easier! I think W9KNI's efforts are quite a bit higher.

Mojo to all ! and 72,

minor fix.

[Elecraft] ECN30 - Tonight

2005-02-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
I'll be looking for your check in tonight at z and 0200z (we might still be
running at 0100z if there's enough activity to keep us busy). Our goal is to
see how well 30m works - and if possible, to exchange some S/N's for the
Elecraft Awards.

I've tried to run some antenna and propagation analysis, and things will start
shutting down for me toward the east around 0200z... you can look at some
VOACAP images I produced here...

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/aa0ni/album?.dir=/df55.src=ph.tok=phkwLlCB7uxCNSF
[purple = s1, blue = s3, green = s5, yellow = s7]

I will probably need someone in the Rockies to act as a relay westward, as well
as someone in the Ohio Valley eastward (10W isn't exactly QRO).

My K2 only goes down to 9 wpm... so I'll try to QRS at 9-10 wpm tonight ... and
next week we'll go a little faster.

Don't forget your Q-signals... (yes - these are a little twisted from their NTS
roots)

QNI : I want to check in
QNS callsigns : The following stations are checked-in callsigns
QSP callsign : I am relaying for callsign / Will you relay for callsign?
QRU : I don't want to contact anyone
QTC callsign : I want to contact callsign / Do you want to contact anyone?
QNX : I want to check out
QNO callsign : callsign has checked out
QNF : The net is free

First, we'll try to quickly gather all of the QNI. When you check in - I'll
need your name and state/province/country. If you want to exchange RST with me,
that would be fine - it helps me know how well I'm getting out, and I will
return the favor.

Then I will announce who is on the list (QNS).

For those interested - we will try to make one round through the list to let
you contact one other station checked into ECN to exchange S/N, rig, etc.

When it is your turn - you can do one of the following:
-
|
|If you want to contact someone, signify QTC callsign - and then start
calling
|them. If the contact isn't succesful after 3 repeats on either side, we'll
move
| to the next call on the list.
|
|If you want to just let anyone call you - send QTC ANY, and you can work your
|way through whoever decides to chime in.
|
|If you don't want to call anyone, you can send QRU.
|
|If you want to leave the net, you can send QNX.
|
-

If all of that goes smoothly one time through the list, and my brain is not
completely frazzled ... we'll try it again. 8-D

-

Looking forward to a great time this evening!

[Elecraft] Strange IF Overload problem with XV50

2005-02-24 Thread Marcus Busch [DL1EKC]
Hi Elecrafters,

just finished my XV50 and hooked everything up with my K2. So far all is
fine, but I have a strange problem with the XV50:

I have set the t-r time to 0.05 s (semi break-in) and every now and then
the XV50 goes into IF overload condition (all LEDs flashing).

As I couldn't believe my K2 would do hot switching I set K2 in TEST mode
(no output power) ... AND ... with 0.0 mW my XV50 still goes into IF
overload condition.

This doesn't happen regularly, but it does happen too often to ignore. Of
course I could go to longer t-r times and forget about listen between the
letters, but I don't believe my XV50 does behave normal.

Did anyone else here notice this?

PS:

Of course 8R is set to hold, keying speed around 20 WpM, but the speed
doesn't seem to have any effect.

[Elecraft] ECN/30 - Success!? (I think)

2005-02-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Well - if you never have any goals to aim for, you won't know if you got them.

First of all - hats off to Kevin/KD5ONS who does this every week for you guys.
Being NCS is fun - but it also can be complicated - as I can see by trying to
get through all my chicken scratches.

For those who weren't able to join us - it started promptly at z and came
to an end around 0030-0040z.

I count 10 check ins - I have info on some, but not all (if it's in brackets -
it's from QRZ.com) - and your RST is in braces.

K6DGW [CA] [FRED] {didn't look sri}
W6UR  [CA]  LOU {599}
NY2LJ [NY] [LONNIE] {549}
N4GE   TN   JERRY K2 #1054 {579}
K2HYD  VA   RAY {339}
W7WEL  ID   BILL K2 #4001 {569}
W4FOA  GA   TONY {589}
WA5ZNU CA   LEIGH {339}
K6FM   OR   JAN {589}
W1TF  [GA] [RALPH] {589}

Many thanks to all of you taking the time to jump in there.

Lessons learned include:

- 30m is a great band - and was especially cooperative today - can't wait to
try it again (maybe for those who are too close for 30, we can try 40m at
0100z?)

- 10 wpm was probably overkill - I think many folks were patient with me even
though it probably wasn't necessary - unless someone specifically requests it,
or checks in with QRS, I'll be at 13-15 wpm.

- I made an assumption (bad idea) that some folks might want to exchange S/N's
- I'm going to ask you to send QTC when you check in if you want to exchange
S/N's (e.g. DE AA0NI DAN OK QNI QTC K)

- We're going to have to work at making QNI easier - what I need to have you do
when you are checking in after I call QNI? is to send your suffix. I'll respond
with your suffix, and you can send your QNI info.

For example...
==
NCS: ECN QNI? DE AA0NI K
YOU: XYZ
NCS: XYZ
YOU: DE K2XYZ JOE NY QNI QNX GE K {Joe wants out early, so he signed QNX}
NCS: TU JOE 73 = ECN QNI? K
YOU: FA
NCS: FA
YOU: DE W6FA BILL CA QNI QTC K
NCS: TU BILL PSE [AS] ECN QNI? DE AA0NI K {Bill wants to exchange S/N - QTC}
...

- Don't try to keep your list on the same page you are trying to copy by hand -
it makes for poor organization

Well - that's all for now. Thanks again - and we'll be back on in about an hour
to try it some more (10115 +/-2 at 0200z).

Daniel / AA0NI

Re: [Elecraft] Strange IF Overload problem with XV50

Hi Marcus,

The XV50 is relay T/R switched and like most transverters can not handle
a T/R setting that allows hearing between letters at 20 WPM. I suggest
setting the K2 T/R time a little longer.

2005-02-24 Thread Lonnie Juli
Dan,

Nice Job!

I was happy to find you right on frequency and right at the top of the hour.
You were RST 439 here in Brooklyn but you were slow enough and gave enough
repeats that I was able to figure out what was going on just about all the
time.

It was fun to check into my first Elecraft-centric event. Ran at 10 watts
(about twice normal) and had better results than I hoped for. All the rigs I
heard sounded great. The receiver on the K2 blows my 'regular' xcvr away.
Now I'll have to rearrange the shack!

I'm usually not home until about 0130Z, but worked from home today and was
glad to be able to participate.

Keep up the good work and HOPE CU AGN.

 If you're within driving range of Monterey, CA, on Saturday, please
 stop by RadioFest. We'll have a new product with us at the show that
 will be of interest to QRPers, HF Pack ops, or anyone who has an HF to
 6-m rig in the 0.5 to 20-watt class. The product will be announced and
 described in detail next week.

 RadioFest is an annual event. There will be interesting presentations,
 exhibitors, and a flea market. I'll be doing a talk at 9 AM, and we'll
 have all of our products at our booth.

Re: [Elecraft] ECN30 - Tonight

2005-02-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Hi Leigh,

Wow - your sample script is quite efficient. I like it, and will try to use
it... but for starting out, I was just hoping to take check ins by their full
callsign, and then if anyone NEEDED to interject something (i.e. they were
relaying someone in, or they needed to check out and it wasn't their turn) that
they could send their suffix (e.g. NI) in between transmissions.

I am realizing more that I am not very literate when it comes to true formal
net protocol. Many who want to check in are just looking for an opportunity to
get their names on the list and make sure their radio is still working, or
their new antenna is doing a good job, and possibly contact other Elecrafters
(i.e. have fun)... so if I'm going overboard on trying to over formalize the
net, let me know (I'm trying to find a happy balance between order and fun).

I started to work on a sample script in a response - but after seeing how
efficient the one you submitted - I can't produce what I was thinking without
incorporating the much more efficient model (which would really help at 9-10
wpm). If you feel comfortable with that format and would like to use it, let me
know, and I'll see if I can request folks use it next week. In the mean time,
I'll take check ins anyway they come (full callsign, or suffix).

So - to summarize - if you want to check in - I'll need your callsign. If all I
hear is a 'Z', then I'll send a 'Z' back, and you can give your full call,
name, and SPC.

Thanks for the question, and I hope I've clarified it to your liking.

- Daniel / AA0NI
Oklahoma City

p.s. The section in your script about QTC? was pretty much how I envisioned
it.

 QNS callsigns : The following stations are checked-in callsigns
 QSP callsign : I am relaying for callsign / Will you relay for
 callsign?
 QRU : I don't want to contact anyone
 QTC callsign : I want to contact callsign / Do you want to contact
 anyone?
 QNX : I want to check out
 QNO callsign : callsign has checked out
 QNF : The net is free

 First, we'll try to quickly gather all of the QNI. When you check in -
 I'll
 need your name and state/province/country. If you want to exchange RST
 with me,
 that would be fine - it helps me know how well I'm getting out, and I
 will
 return the favor.

 Then I will announce who is on the list (QNS).

 For those interested - we will try to make one round through the list
 to
 let
 you contact one other station checked into ECN to exchange S/N, rig,
 etc.

 When it is your turn - you can do one of the following:
 -
 |
 |If you want to contact someone, signify QTC callsign - and then
 start
 calling
 |them. If the contact isn't succesful after 3 repeats on either side,
 we'll
 move
 | to the next call on the list.
 |
 |If you want to just let anyone call you - send QTC ANY, and you can
 work your
 |way through whoever decides to chime in.
 |
 |If you don't want to call anyone, you can send QRU.
 |
 |If you want to leave the net, you can send QNX.
 |
 -

 If all of that goes smoothly one time through the list, and my brain is
 not
 completely frazzled ... we'll try it again. 8-D

 Looking forward to a great time this evening!
