So true...one small inhibiting factor acting against me starting K2 1641
(for five years!) was that one resistor pack came up missing during the
initial inventory. While completeing the (much delayed) inventory, I
found the errant RP stuck under the flap of one of the envelopes.

[Elecraft] K2 Pre Filter

2005-03-17 Thread Brian Broggie
We are getting a lot of requests for the parts to make G3RXQ's K2 Pre
Filter. To facilitate this, we have made a build list with all the
parts that we can supply for a nominal charge. The list is based on the
description and schematic found on G3RXQ's website. Included are the
crystals, caps, toroids, magnet wire, a pc board and an 8 pin
connector. The total cost for the parts is $29.00, plus shipping (and
CA tax to orders inside California). Please order by part K2PREFILTER.

While we encourage hams like you to explore and try new circuits and
ideas with our products, please be aware that any modifications to our
products come at a tradeoff to the original design. Here are some
guidelines from the owners of Elecraft and designers of the K2, Wayne
Burdick and Eric Swartz...

1. Overall receiver gain and noise figure may degrade because the added
crystal filter will have some loss of around 5 dB.

2. K2s with older crystals in their RF board and KSB2 filters may not
have the exact same center frequency as the ones we're using (and
shipping) now. The effect would be that the new filter would overlap the
old, reducing the effective bandwidth on receive. The only way to ensure
that this doesn't happen on older K2s would be to replace all 14
crystals (RF board and KSB2). A new set of 14 matched crystals can be
ordered from Elecraft as part K2KSB2XTLS.

3. The crystal filter does not have the pad in front of it. The Pad
normally is either part of the KNB2 or the PCB if no KNB2 is installed.
(The pad gives the 2N5109 amp stage before it a good return loss match.)
It will degrade K2 IMD Dynamic range by over 10 dB (IMDDR3 and IP3)
without this pad. Reinstalling the PCB pad will not help as it would end
up between the two SSB xtal filters.

4. Finally, you should be aware that the KDSP2 does the same thing for
ultimate rejection, since the regular filter more than filters enough to
keep off freq signals from pumping the K2s AGC, allowing the DSP to
clean up any residual blow-by.

Thanks, Wayne and Eric!

So, evaluate the data on G3RXQ's website and what we are presenting in
this email and order accordingly.

Brian Broggie - W6FVI

[Elecraft] Elecraft or Witchcraft???

2005-03-17 Thread LA2MOA

Hi all!

I´m right now getting near the end of my K1-project. Receiver works like
a dream, but I think I´m getting mad when I´m trying to get ANY power
out from the transmitter. The output meter shows P 0.1 and my WM-2
wattmeter shows 0.000 mW

I started to suspect that something was wrong with some of the toroids
and I rewound and resoldered T4. Did the tranmitter alignment afain on
10 MHz, and BANG! There it was! 2 watts of output power. I tapped the
MSG button and pushed the two WPM buttons again to continue the
alignment. No problems att all. I felt satisfied when the WM-2 showed
roughly 2.2 watts of output and the the K1 display showed 2.5 watts.

That called for a celebration, so I tapped the MSG button again to abort
Tune and went out to make myself a well diserved cup of coffee. I was
out for about ten minutes and went back to the shack to continue with
the transmitter alignment on 7 MHz. I just wanted to make another check
on 10 MHz and I pushed the two WPM buttons again... K1 display showed P
0.1 and the WM-2 showed zero output.

Now, what´s going on here? Is the rig re-aligning itself when nobody is
looking at it or..?

Think I´m going insane here...

2005-03-17 Thread k4zm
Sounds like you might have a bad hetrodyne crystal on 40 meters. If you
have a general coverage receiver tune it to the oscillator frequency and see
if you hear a strong carrier when you move the antenna near the crystals on
the filter board. If not you may have a bad crystal or a bad solder
connection on the relays that switch then in and out. Next look at the
solder connections on the filter board very closely.

[Elecraft] K2 phase noise

2005-03-17 Thread Fraser Robertson
Thank you for the responses and I'm pleased to get some discussion going on
this subject on the reflector. Phase noise has been brought up before, but
not discussed in detail. As I said I've had personal emails about this so I
know I'm not on my own here.

I should point out that my comments were not intended to 'slag off' the K2,
and I am not 'obsessed by numbers'. I don't expect the K2 to have lab grade
performance, nor to outperform high price rigs. My sole reason for looking
into this (believe me I've got better things to do) is due to complaints
about my signal on air. These have been from respected and technically
competent amateurs. I can go into detail if required.

Several months ago I had some exchanges with Gary and Eric, and sent them
some analyser plots. More recently I've done comparisons at 300Hz from
carrier using a HP8640B as a reference, and I soon should be in a position
to produce more detailed plots of the close in phase noise.

Although the comparisons I've made clearly show the K2 is inferior to the
MP, 870 and a home brew rig in this respect as stated, the phase noise
performance to me seems adequate, however, that doesn't explain the comments
I've received on air. I get very similar results with two K2's, one built
by me and another by GU3MBS, who is a very experienced K2 builder. Both
have all the latest mods. At other times I've received good reports,
possibly from less critical operators? I want to get to the bottom of this
so that I can confidently use my K2 for QRO contesting. The rig has many
fine attributes and I take my hat off to Wayne and Eric for their excellent
design and production engineering.

By the way I've moved the K2 as far as practical from hum sources (2') and
even tried enclosing it in a mu-metal shield, so I'm pretty confident that
magnetic modulation isn't the culprit.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 phase noise

2005-03-17 Thread S55M
Hello boys!

I am playing around same problem for last two weeks.
I had written to reflector but no one was interested to comment.
I am using K2 for HF contesting with LL PA and for VHF contesting with
transverter+ LL PA and i also want to have signal clean as much as possible.
I was testing K2 on 14MHz with transverter and without it. For detailed
information (in numbers) i still need some peace of equipment (step att).I
was going from transverter output (abt 1mW sig) directly to a HF RX.Of
course, i was increasing noise all over the band but that was not the
problem. When i TX in SSB without modulation there are thousends of little
birdies (none on CW) all over the entire band, way down from the level of
carrier, but there. I am shure abt cause of that birdies is the 4MHz OSC on
KSB2 board.
What should be done in plus to take the TX noise further down?
Suggestions are wellcome.
Like Stewart, I would like to see the Top tehnicians to share the knowledge
with us on this reflector.

Have Fun!

It is my belief that a lot a technical aspects of Elecraft products are
being
discussed 'Off Reflector' between specific interested individuals.
I think that, because these discussions are not seen by the group, a lot of
useful information is being missed.

I would like to see these in-depth technical discussion treated in the same
manner as the what soldering iron should I use ? type threads.
Maybe the reflector could be sub-divided ?

END OF RANT ...
