Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net announcement

2005-04-24 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Good Morning Kevin,

Don't give up on 40m propagation yet !! Last night (Saturday) stateside
signals were very strong (East coast to Central states) exchanging Party
reports. There were some West coast signals later, weak but readable when in
the clear. Heavy RTTY QRM 7.025 up. I had been experimenting with a new
antenna phasing system until dark with much more to do, so all this heard
with a mismatched, mismanaged antenna firing who knows where. Did not
transmit in case I blew up a balun. The problem here with the ECN / QRP
frequency 7.040 +- is RTTY, Letter Station and SSB QRM. K2 sweats!

But I digress ;) Tomorrow evening we will attempt another installment
of the Elecraft CW Net. Hopefully propagation will allow me to get past
the Rocky Mountains and at least in to the plains states. Ohio and
Pennsylvania are to be hoped for but may be possible. My sked into OK was
mostly good this week but working down to ABQ was a struggle at times. We
did enter a few streams of particles from the sun giving us a bit higher
noise level but just makes life a bit more interesting copying S1 sigs
with an S3 noise level! But in a couple of years the down years of the
solar cycle will just be a memory and we will be working Eastern Europe
and New Zealand with no difficulties.

[Elecraft] Re: KPA100 question

2005-04-24 Thread Ron ZL1TW

Hi,
Just my 2c worth..in the days before the stray oscillation that
occurred in *some* KPA100's was found and a fix presented, I was advised by
Gary to try mounting my C83 on the *TOP* of the ends of the 1 and 3
winding of T2, and it is still there lying parallel with the PC board, so
having it slightly off vertical in the suggested position shouldn't matter
a fig I imagine.
Putting the 1k resistor across RFC3 fixed the oscillation problem, and I
never bothered to put C83 back in it's proper place. My KPA100 works fine.

[Elecraft] Long Wave Transmitters

2005-04-24 Thread Jim Brown
Many thanks to all who responded to my query on this topic. Several asked that
I
forward a summary of the replies to the list, so here goes.

There is a quite detailed description of the WWVB 60 kHz transmitter at
Fort Collins, CO at the site below. Their ERP is 50 kW. This power
level is a bit lower than the highest power AM broadcast stations in
the US (50 kW into a near half-wave vertical). I've never heard them in
Chicago (roughly 1,000 mile path and a pretty high noise level), but my
el-cheapo digital clock is able to synchronize to them.

http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/stations/wwvb.htm

All of the WWV HF transmitters run 10 kW into half-wave verticals that are
one half-wave above ground. See

http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/stations/wwv.html

The WWVH HF transmitters (Hawaii) are comparable, except that most are
directional to the west (two vertical towers phased to produce a
cardioid pattern.

http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/stations/wwvh.htm

European long wave broadcasters use transmitters ranging from about 200 kW to
3MW. Most antennas are 1/4 wave or less, but some use phased arrays. The BBC
station on 198 kHz, for example, runs 500 kW, at least one French station runs
2
MW, as do some stations in Eastern Europe.

Long wave transmitters are able to cover long distances by ground wave, because
ground losses are much lower. It is well known, for example, that 5 kW on 540
kHz
has much more ground wave field strength at 100 miles than 50 kW on 1590 kHz
over
average soil.

Quincy, Illinois. They may have field contour info, but the transmitter is a
400

with
a multiwire flattop connecting the tops of the two towers. We supplied a new L-

I'm not sure who you might talk to at Harris, but John Hall was project

Longwave is nifty in eastern Europe. I rented a Land Rover and it had a LW,MW

story
I heard was that the government liked to maintain the LW station so that
Romanian

there was another 153 khz in Germany that I occasionally heard cochannel when I
was up the Satu Mare area in NW Romania. Others from western Europe were
listenable up around 240 or so.

[Elecraft] Tuning Knobs

2005-04-24 Thread We5f
Hello, Fellow Elecrafters:

I recently decided to upgrade the tuning knob on my K1. I purchased
several different knobs and have a few spares, if anyone is interested.

I have the Alinco DX-70T main tuning knob. It has a skirt diameter of
1-5/16 and is weighted, with a brass insert. It also has knurling around the
edge
for a nice feel. If you like, I can drill out the brass insert to 1/4.
Price is $15, including postage.

I also 2 of the main tuning knobs for the Alinco DX-77T. This knob is
larger, with a skirt diameter of 1-15/16 (just under 2). It is cast metal
and
heavy weighted and has the finger dimple and knurling. It is designed to go on
a
keyed shaft (with the flat edge), but I believe it could be adapted easily to
fit a round shaft. It's too large for the K1 (IMO), but could work with the
K2 (?) or others. Price is $20 each, including postage.

You can see these knobs on www.rigpix.com. Please contact me off list.

[Elecraft] FYI: Nice LCD Display Modules

2005-04-24 Thread Bill Acito W1PA
Thought I would share this... came across some nice LCD display modules
(voltage, temp, elapsed time, etc.) while looking for something to add to my
AA UC3906 Charger for charge monitoring.

You can get big LED displays modules on eBay for $10, and these are
certainly not cheap, but they are small, low profile, low current (3ma) and
the voltage display only requires two wires, and best of all the mounting is
done through only one small hole. I was able to easily add one to the front
of my charger despite the tight clearances with the internal transformer:

http://www.marteltesttools.com/products.php?cat=113action=detailid=69

With FD coming up, if you wanted a small display for battery or solar
monitoring, etc, these seem to work very well. Ordered direct, fast
shipping.

btw, I have no financial interest in this company, and don't get anything
special if you order one.
Just passing it along.

[Elecraft] KPA-100

2005-04-24 Thread Brent Sutphin WB4X
I'm finished with the KPA-100. Got it on the air this morning. So far
everything is working fine business. My first two reports were Excellent
tone quality and Outstanding signal very FB. I think that says it all.
Elecraft is an outstanding company with outstanding products. I wouldn't
expect anything less than an excellent kit with excellent reports. I had
alot of fun building this kit. I sort of wish I had not finished yet. I
still have to install the new KSB2 firmware, when it arrives. I was using
an Icom 706MKIIG while I had the K2 on the bench. I was very happy to get
the K2 back in service. Anyone want to trade a K2 for the MKIIG? Let me
know...

[Elecraft] K2 #4818 on the air

2005-04-24 Thread Paul Bruneau
I haven't finished the final construction (speaker, etc), but I
couldn't wait to try my new K2 out so I answered a CQ this afternoon on
40 and was heard by poor KE4FIG. The band was iffy (lots of fading) and
my code is currently horribly rusty so I had to bail out early, but my
new K2 went from Michigan with a windom type antenna just above my
roofline to Kentucky on 10 watts.

Thanks to the list for being there and I hope to work some more K2
operators soon!

Re: [Elecraft] Re: KPA100 question

2005-04-24 Thread Ron ZL1TW

Hi Rob,
Your problem sound a bit different. What was happening on
quite a few earlier KPA100's was the diodes in the switching circuit were
providing enough capacitance to cause a tuned circuit with RFC3 and that
circuit would break into oscillation and modulate the carrier with a
spurious signal. The resulting signal then had nasty sidebands and I used
to get accused of Splatter. It used to occur at powers above about 80w.
mainly. The fix was to dampen RFC3 with a 1k resistor as well as a resistor
change in the high voltage bias supply to make sure the HV supply didn't
drop too low on demand.
The changes are outlined in the K2/100 Manual ( Appendix G) ERRATA rev.
C-3, December 14, 2004. ( steps 1 and 3 ) which is obtainable off the
Elecraft Web site.

Hope this helps?
Cheers...Ron ZL1TW

[Elecraft] SN 4836 Alive

2005-04-24 Thread Evert Bakker

Hello All,

K2 SN 4836 is alive and k(l)icking.

After I had some trouble with the receiver (installed a resistor on the
wrong place on the control board AND forgot to install the series
capacitor from the VCO to the RX mixer) I got help of Don Wilhelm
(W3FPR). All have been sorted out and seems to work.

I didn't install all options yet, but made my first CW QSO with the K2.

It seems that I still have to align the filters with Spectran but that
will be done soon.
I didn't do any comparison yet with my Drake TR7 and Yen-Tec Paragon,
but I'll let you know all in a couple off weeks.

Thanks for info, help (thanks Don) and the designers.

Is it a new K2 Tom? (Or at least with a s/n 3000).

Some pitch variation is normal. The digital circuits that reset the BFO
frequency to that set up during CAL FIL have a resolution, or accuracy, that
allows perhaps 20 or 30 Hz. However, it is generally stable from day to day.

Older K2's had a BFO that drifted more than the current ones. The BFO, like
any oscillator designed to change frequency, tries to change frequency on
its own, usually in response to temperature changes. You may be experiencing
some BFO drift if the degree if change when stepping through the filters
varies from time to time. The drift issue with the older K2's was cured with
a mod kit from Elecraft.

The normal method of reducing the filter-to-filter variation to the minimum
possible - assuming no BFO drift - is to force the K2 logic to re-read the
BFO frequencies. You do that by putting the calibrator probe in the BFO test
point like you did when running spectrogram, go into CAL FIL, and then
change each BFO frequency setting to and different value, then put it back
where it was. That movement causes the logic to re-read the BFO frequency
and store a new, hopefully more accurate, value in memory.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can *not* tweak the frequencies in
CAL FIL while listening to a signal on the air. Only have noise in the
bandpass. That's because the BFO and Local Oscillator (PLL Oscillator)
frequencies interact to make changing the BFO frequency appear to make the
I.F. bandpass move. There a good write-up on that on the Elecraft web site
called The Mechanics Behind CAL FIL.

They shouldn't be hard to find. I saw some on a few of the boat anchor sites
for 2 bucks. A lot of signal generators and other similar test equipment of

And if you need one absolutely right NOW, I remember we used to cut the

It can be a little touchy to get just the right center pin length, but it
worked FB on my DX-35 during the brief period that traumatized me on phone

RE: [Elecraft] crystal filter pitch differences

2005-04-24 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Tom,

If the pitch difference is 20 Hz or less, you have hit the 'best you can do'
point. The DAC quantization error is about that size. Some folks claim
that you can use techniques like modifying the filter width a bit to cure
it, but I have never tried it, and for my purposes, it is just not worth
it - after all a shift of only 20 Hz, while perhaps disconcerting, will
still be well inside the passband (assuming you have the narrow filters
properly contered on you sidetone and you are tuned to zero-beat).

If you have a large shift, then there is something awry with either the K2
or the way you are interpreting the Spectrogram display.

[Elecraft] Should I get a KDSP2?

2005-04-24 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi All,
Ok, I know I've said this before, but I am now _really_ getting ready to
upgrade my K2 (#402). Honestly, I don’t know how it could be better, but
others have said so. My K2 acquitted itself in the last Foxhunt, and I
haven't had a lick of trouble with this thing in, what, 5 years, I guess.

So besides ordering all the mods, I am now trying to determine whether the
KDSP2 can really help me. My only experience with audio DSP was an MFJ 784B
and I can honestly say that after many hours of testing it, that when using
it, it never got me a contact that I could have gotten without it. But this
analysis was done with a KNWD TS-850 with a 270 Hz IF filter. The TS-850
filtering was so inferior to the K2 that I sold it.

Understand that when I used the 784B and the TS-850, it was for in-the-mud
QRP signals in the early days of the QRP Foxhunts. The very worst workable
weak QRM'd 40 meter signals imaginable. So maybe a DSP works better with
stronger signals but then I wouldn't need a DSP. So if I am looking for
help for improving intelligibility for these kind of contacts, perhaps DSP
noise reduction might not be that effective, but what about narrowing the
bandwidth? I typically use the K2 at 100 Hz wide setting which seems to be
a good approximately 175 Hz wide filter to me, much better than the 270 Hz
on the TS-850. But if the signals were in the mud (at about the noise
level), would it help me copy more characters? Would the KAF2 be just as
effective? Or since I like the rig, should I just do the A to B revision
mods for now?

Eventually I hope to get the 100 W tuner and amp in the separate enclosure,
and do some traffic handling work (and Heaven forbid - actually use a
microphone). The KDSP2 might actually help with this. Any advice is
appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] crystal filter pitch differences

2005-04-24 Thread David A.Belsley
Tom: You're never going to get rid of some small pitch change: 10-20Hz
is within the resolution of the D2A conversion. It is something you
can learn quite easily to live with, if you will allow yourself. It is
something that will drive you crazy if you won't allow yourself.
Because the pitch shift is really and truly inconsequential, allow me
to suggest you do yourself a favor, and forget it.

best wishes,

Hello to all. First time posting herem glad to be a part of the
Elecraft family. I have a K1, K2, xg-1. the K2 is having a problem
with pitch differences, one bfo setting to another, the hard part is
that sometimes it's perfect, other times not. Normally if there is a
pitch difference, opt-1 is different. I have tried several times to
get it correct but no success. I have used Spectrogram also.. Any
suggestions?? thanks.
