Nothing is wrong with the knob that comes on the K2.
Like nothing is wrong with normal wheels that comes on the average car.
But a lot of people is changing normal wheels (i don't know the exact
english/american term) with bigger and larger alluminium ones :)))
We are so different and that is beauty of life.

I need to sell my Yaesu FT-900AT (serial # 4J060136 purchased in 1994). It
is in excellent condition and it has the 500 Hz CW filter and TCXO
installed, it has the auto-tuner built in, and comes with the matching MH-31
hand mic and a never used separation cable - the front panel removes for
mobile mounting if one has the need to do that - manual is included. No
mods. It has not been on the air very much since I built my first K2 in
1999.

Partial specs: Receiver 100kHz to 30 MHz, +/- 2PPM stability, sensitivity <
0.25uV for HF bands, SSB, CW, AM and FM. Transmitter power adjustable up to
100 watts. A 20 Amp 13.8 volt power supply will handle it at full output

This transceiver has served me well. I have replaced it with another recent

Asking $650 shipped to your door anywhere in the continental US.

Off-reflector responses only please (please delete the reflector name from

For limited casual use not a thing as the knob is well balanced as regards
weight/size and fits the available front panel space perfectly, however if you
have to move frequency a lot searching for stations the hard edges of the
knob become a somewhat wearing to the fingers.

Had exactly the same problem with an earlier JRC JST-135 HF transceiver and
that was solved by installing a knob from the later JRC NRD-535 RX. The only
difference between the two was the NRD-535 had a rubber ring (tire) on the
outer edge. What a difference this makes when searching for stations!

With this in mind it would perhaps be a good idea for Elecraft to consider
the provision of a suitable rubber ring to fit externally on the circumference
of their stock VFO knob as outside the USA not all users will have the
access to the reported solutions to the problem. My attempts to find a
suitable
rubber band of the type reported to come with asparagus supplied in the USA
(asparagus tips?) have got nowhere. Have got a crony of mine visiting the USA
at
present switched on to finding sources.

Of the two Yaesu solutions with the FT100D and the FT900 rubber tires which
is the best? The prices quoted for supplies of these in the USA will have
absolutely no bearing on the final UK cost.

BTW - for those who might be interested in really trivial facts, the stock
K2 knob does fit on this transceiver too, so if you are interested in just
swapping them ...

Re: [Elecraft] K1 #2034 Alignment problem

2005-07-12 Thread Ron ZL1TW

Hi George,
The only voltages you quote that are a bit low are derived
by the AGC and they would be low with the set out of alignment anyway,
If you are getting the broadcast station by touching pin 4 of U2, the audio
stages are working anyway!
Don't get mixed up with the voltages for U1 in the "Appendix E Trouble
shooting page 7" table . It is easy to select the U1 voltages for the
*Front panel* and not the *RF * board U1 . The U1 voltages you need to
check against is in column 12 of the Table.
It would be interesting to know how far through the Stage 1 testing you
got, and why you suspect U1 and U2 as the problem?

[Elecraft] Last Call for TAC Sprint Logs

2005-07-12 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

Due to me being out of town yesterday I am extending the cut off date for
the TAC Sprint logs until 13 July 2005 @ 23:59 UTC.

If you made a few contacts in this years TAC Sprint, please send me your
log. We only have around 20 entries.

I will figure out your score for you

I will need your name, call, log, power out, radio used and QTH.

Check out www.n3epa.org for a list of logs already received. Click on TAC
Sprint and then on the results. There are not that many entries so you could
still win a plaque with only a few QSO's.

I am looking at possible dates for next years TAC Sprint, I might move it
into the fall or winter time. Hopefully the move would bring the
participation level up.

[Elecraft] CW PTT

2005-07-12 Thread Frank Mayer
I'm considering ordering a K2/100 transceiver and I'm concerned about the lack
of a front panel MOX or SEND button . I've read alot of the posts on the
reflector concerning the issue. I have used full-break in in the past but not
on a regular basis. Is there anyone that is using the K2 that previously has
had little experience with full break-in and now finds that this method is
totally satisfactory and does not miss the SEND button or at least
semi-break-in? The rig sure looks great but I'm in a quandary about this
feature.

Yes, me.

I used to use almost always use semi break-in or a foot switch. The K2's
full break-in works so well, I wouldn't use anything else even if it was
available.

In any case, the K2 is capable of semi break-in, and there is a mod to
provide CW PTT.

[Elecraft] (no subject)

2005-07-12 Thread Paul Gates
To one and all... I will be at the National Museum of American History part
of the Smithsonian Institution tomorrow from 1400z to 1900z that is Wed. I
man the station there NN3SI on each Wed. that I am available. Email me at my
address [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you would like a CW contact and QSL. I will be
taking my KX1 with me and would suggest working 14.060+/- or 7.030+/-. The
reason I am taking my KX1 is I have never operated it on the Log Periodic
antenna there. We have a TenTec Omni VI and a Kenwood 450SAT rigs there.

I will be leaving the house at 1000z because I take my wife to work but I
can get my email from the museum if I do not hear from you before I leave in
the morning.

Re: [Elecraft] CW PTT

2005-07-12 Thread David F. Reed

Frank,

I have had a few full break in rigs in the distant past, and back then,
I was disappointed; for the last 30 years most of my operating has been
semi-break in, and now with the K2, full break in, and I find I really
love it; it is a real pleasure to use - for example, in the recent IARU
contest, I operated a single op, CW QRP entry; I could hear when someone
was stepping on me, I could notice when the station I was calling didn't
hear me and started another CQ, and so on. In fact, I am coming to the
opinion its more like talking on the phone in the ability to interrupt
and be interrupted, if both sides of the QSO are using it.

I think you will like it a lot, and if not, I imagine you might be able
to set the delay long enough to not do it (I am not really sure because
I have not tried it, since I like it as is.

And, I am sure you will like the rig; I think its receiver is about as
good as my IC-7800, for a lot less money.

I liked mine so much, I recently bought a KX1 (more on that in another post.

[Elecraft] KX1 progress

2005-07-12 Thread David F. Reed

Folks,

You might imagine how much I really like my K2; I caught the Elecraft
"bug" from it, and ordered a KX1 recently.

My various disabilities had led me to get help (meaning build it for me)
on the K2, and have been very happy with the results, but I decided to
attempt to fix my workshop up to accommodate some of my disabilities as
much as I could, and see if I could build the KX1.

My vision is fairly bad (cataracts) and aside from loss of light
sensitivity, there is some loss of color vision also; so sorting the
resistors and capacitors was a chore, and aside from an illuminated
magnifier to work with, I added a DVM to check the resistors before
installing them (and of course, do the testing steps) and a capacitance
and inductance meter to do the same with the chokes and check my toroid
winding where possible, and assure the correct value caps were used.

It is a bit of a strain to do, but so far so good; I am enjoying doing
this, and I have a small milestone to report tonight; KX1 serial number
1127 has passed assembly part 1, including all resistance, voltage, and
functionality tests.

Tomorrow I start with part 2 of the assembly - I will report back when I
get done with that or run into trouble; you folks on the list are an
inspiration, and these are so much fun as rigs, and as kits, so I am
smiling lots these days.
