[Elecraft] Re: KIO2 responds but doesn't change VFO
I found it; somehow VFOB got selected for RX. Decoding the DISPLAY bits told me. Sorry for the confusion. I've gotten my KIO2 or K2 in a weird state. It responds to commands, but doesn't change the VFO. - If I send an FA and then query with FA; it sends me back the new frequency, but the frequency doesn't change. - If I send a DS; it reports a different frequency from what FA; reports, and that agrees with the unchanged audio - If I send an FA out of the current band, it switches bands, and DS; agrees, but again, the frequency in band doesn't change. I searched for some kind of gentle reset I could send, but couldn't find one. Has anyone else seen this behavior? I suspect a power cycle will fix it, but I can't power cycle the K2 remotely (at least not yet). [Elecraft] Need Help With The K!
I used the K1 last night and everything worked fine, but when I got up early this morning, I could not get it on 40 meters. The dial reading for example is 3580. All the other bands work good like 30,20,17 meters. I probably goofed it up myself rather than little gremlins attacking it while was sleeping. I was playing around with B1-4. The other help I need is how to disable the internal tuner. I have read the tuner manual but cannot get from ATU to TUN. Any help I can receive would be greatly appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] VFO A/B mode settings
Regretfully thats normal Stan. Independent VFO mode setting is facility that I would dearly like to have though. Trev G3ZYY In message [EMAIL PROTECTED], Stan Rife [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes I don't think I have a problem, it is more likely operator error. On any given band, when I switch from VFO A to B, the mode does not change to what I had previously set VFO B to. If I am LSB in VFO A and I switch to VFO B, I set the mode to CW, tune around for a while, then go back to VFO A and it remains in CW mode. It doesn't switch back to LSB for VFO A. Is this normal? I thought I remembered that the mode was saved for each VFO. I guess I need to read the manual again, after 2 years. RE: [Elecraft] iambic modes
I have suggested it before and feel that all electronic keys should have an 'Iambic OFF' mode in addition to the A and B modes. I have for many years used a single paddle homebrew keyer but now have a twin paddle G4ZPY keyer. Although I have the K2 set to mode B I never ever conciously use the iambic funtions. Squeezing and the effects the iambic logic does are counterproductive to my style of keying and I wish I could just simply turn them off. And having such an option would get rid of much of the mis-sent CW one hears so much on the bands these days. 73 Dave G3YMC http://www.davesergeant.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Oscilloscopes (WAS: spectrogram)
Poor John asked if he could use spectrogram as an oscilloscope, and that's morphed into recommendations to buy a 400 MHz scope! In my last job I was the video amplifier design guy, and in that role I designed video amplifiers to drive CRTs in high-resolution industrial computer displays. Over the years, resolution requirements constantly increased so the last generations of products had CRT cathode drive requirements on the order of 60Vp-p with 3nSec rise and fall times. As I recall, the last video amp I did was around 2.7nSec at 60 Volts drive. (now you know why CRT monitors can cause serious RFI ... shielding was one of the biggest challenges). My point is, I am familiar with and appreciate the need for fast oscilloscopes when the application requires it . My favorite was the 475 until we got 2465's, and I really liked the 2465. But I always felt the 2465 was more fragile than the old 465 - 475 series stuff, and the things that broke in the 2465's were always expens ive and proprietary. If you were going to buy one for home use, it might be easier to keep the older stuff going because they're tougher and fewer of the parts are made of unobtainium. But .. my REAL point here ... for home use for the average hobby user, we almost never really NEED a 400 MHz or even 250 MHz scope. My home scope for years was a Tek 455 with 50MHz bandwidth. I did design development work at home and fixed a zillion things with that scope and rarely found the 50 Mhz bandwidth a problem. For the less demanding hobbiest, it might NEVER be a problem. Of course you have to apply judgement and realize the limitations of the instrument, but that's ALWAYS the case with any measurement. People tend to think they have to always have the highest performance and anything less is inadequate (hence the internet surfers with 3.2GHz Pentium IV computers and a Gig of Ram to send e-mail) but if you hold off buying a scope because you can't afford the 250 MHz or 400 Mhz scope that you THINK you need ... be aware you can do 99% of your oscilloscope work with a decent 50Mhz scope. If you're designing fast logic or think you need to look at the carrier of a VHF transmitter, you need speed, but for fixin' radios, it's rare. Because of the gotta have the fastest mentality, the old 455's and such are real bargains, and will serve the average hobbiest well. Any scope is better than no scope. I can't imagine life without an oscilloscope in my basement. I have four ... including a 922 (15MHz??) that's my favorite for pick it up and go to help a friend fix something ... Just my humble opinion based on some years of experience ... Jim AB4CZ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] Oscilloscopes (WAS: spectrogram)
By the way, one more comment on Tek scopes .. I loved the 475, REALLY loved the 2465, but I can barely tolerate Tek's DSOs... Maybe I'm just to dumb to use them, but I think the menu structures in most of the Tektronix digital scopes are non-intuitive and obtuse. If you want a really neat digital scope, look for a LeCroy. When I bought DSOs for my last company, I had HP, Tektronix, Philips, and LeCroy bring scopes in for me to play with. I refused to look at any of the user manuals. If I needed the manual to get basic use out of the scope, I didn't want the scope. The LeCroy won hands down for ease of use. I'd REALLY like to get a 350MHz or so LeCroy for home use! jim ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] iambic modes
What I found confusing is the lack of Official designation of what constitutes Iambic A or B or in other rigs Iambic 1 or 2. There should be some standardization. With some manufacturers Iambic A is Iambic 2 with another manufacturer and visa versa. Eliminate Iambic 1 or 2 and desiginate it as Iambic A or B and A is the more critical of the two and not very forgiving! Connect the (-) probe to ground, and touch the (+) probe to the tab of Q9 on the KPA100 board (or to the center conductor of the PA KEY output jack, J7). The DMM should be indicating a high resistance (typically indicated by a flashing display). OK to here - Hold TUNE on the K2 to key the transmitter. The resistance reading should drop to less than 3 ohms. THE OHMS start dropping, but before I can pull the + probe off the Q9 tab, something clicks/pop and the K2 drops out of the tune mode (sort of like of a reset?) IS THIS WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN?
