[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening All, The daffodils and other neotenous flowers are blooming in downtown Portland. Now the progression continues as they gradually bloom further West and then higher in elevation. In about six to eight weeks they will be blooming here. I am sure Ms P will enjoy the many flowers which have been added to her yard. The snow is mostly gone here but the frost has been quite heavy. The wood I cut a few weeks ago is keeping Sam quite happy in his box next to the stove. One day I am sure I will find him melted but I don't think he would mind. Now to find one of those cat-shaped Tupperware containers to mould him back to normal :) I've kluged a method to get the K2 to headphone to microphone to soundcard to MixW, etc together over the last few weeks. I have successfully received SSTV and BPS31 so far. Now to figure out a few of the other modes and make a cable so I can transmit. I don't think I can use the K2 for digital modes since I would have to get the speaker and the back audio jack working again. For now it is a receive only, through the headphone to microphone kluge route mechanism. But the spare rig: Icom 706 will work for the digital stuff. It has been opened up for MARS work so I'll be able to use it for MT63 reception. With an bit of interfacing I'll get it working for transmit too. N0SS has a .pdf which I will read a bit later and see if I can modify his circuit to run with the IC706. Kluge is the operative word here. Just checked http://spaceweather.com/index.cgi for the sunspot number. Still stuck at zero but that has not stopped propagation before, in fact there was a bit of aurora in Alaska earlier this week due to a coronal hole allowing some ions to zap us. Any sort of mechanism to stir up the ionosphere is helpful so maybe we will have good conditions for tomorrow's nets. In passing, if any of you have a clear evening sky, Mercury is easily visible in the Western sky shortly after sundown. I saw it two Fridays ago while coming home through Banks. I had never witnessed Mercury in the Oregon skies before so was pretty happy to have the chance. If you are an early riser you may want to take a look East of Venus before sunrise since there is a new comet to hunt. Comet Pojmanski is a binocular object but may get better, I have not done the research yet. [Elecraft] Re OT-MS Updates
Thanks to all who answered my question regarding Microsoft auto-updates for Windows. The overwhelming opinion is that they are safe and should be enabled, so I have done dat. Apparently, after the download, the update actually happens when you shut your computer down. Thanks again, hope to work everyone in the NAQP RTTY today. RE: [Elecraft] Unused back panel holes
Bill, That is FB, but just one additional comment - if you are connecting that supply directly to the battery, you should lower the voltage to about 13.8 volts for a proper float charge - OTOH, if the supply is connected to the battery through a protective diode, your 14.25 volt supply is correct. In other words, the proper voltage depends upon where you connected the supply to the K2. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > David, I did exactly what Bob is suggesting, and I used one of the extra > ports to connect my small regulated power supply to keep the K2 internal > battery fully charged. [Elecraft] Embarassing
Well, I'm afraid to raise my head after this. About two weeks ago I raised the question here on the reflector about realigning my K2. My initial alignment had went relatively well but did not use Spectogram. After encouragement from several people to give it a go I dived right in. It went real smooth until I got to the SSB filter calibration. Levels shifted between filters, the filter widths were much too wide on all settings and the S meter was dead on several filters. I posted several questions here on the reflector and to different individuals including Elecraft Support. At one point I was convinced I had the problem under control. Then after more test it was obvious something was wrong. All the guidance I received was good but didn't correct the problem. Something was still wrong. This morning I was digging thru the reflector archives looking for help. I found a response back in 1999 to someone from Wayne at Elecraft about something somewhat similiar. He mentioned that a voltage chart was being released for the SSB module and check all voltages with it. After finding the chart I measured voltages and found the cathode of diode D6 on the SSB module was several volts low. To shorten a long store the diode was installed backward by me when the K2 was built almost a year ago. Reversing the diode corrected the problems. The filters probably need a little more tweaking but they are much better now. I've not been a big filter user on the K2 so really did not previously have a good feel as to how they were operating or should operate. The radio is just about good enough without filters. My thanks to all for their patience and understanding. It is hard to believe all that has happened with this radio since I started with it and now to find I had installed a diode backwards. I'm sure I will be shaking my head on this one a long time. 73, Jim, AB0UK K2/100 S/N 4787 __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! RE: [Elecraft] Unused back panel holes
David, I did exactly what Bob is suggesting, and I used one of the extra ports to connect my small regulated power supply to keep the K2 internal battery fully charged. I use a 50A - 13.6 VDC power supply and battery system to operate most of my station equipment including a repeater, but 13.6V will not keep the K2 battery charged. So I built up a small regulated supply powered by a "Wall-Wart" that operates at about 14.25V to float the K2 battery. You can probably come up with something for these ports to enhance your station as well. 73, Bill, K5GCW -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Robert Tellefsen Sent: Saturday, February 25, 2006 11:42 AM To: David Douglass; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Unused back panel holes David Why not plug them with appropriate connectors. Rich, Rather than attempting to walk you through the steps to bypass the KDSP2 (it is in the KDSP2 menu which is kicked in with the DISPLAY button, not AFIL). I suggest you drag out the KDSP2 manual and follow the instructions to put it into bypass state. [Elecraft] OT: MS Updates
Hello Fred, The updates issued by Microsoft fix security flaws and other bugs in Windows. It is more safe to install them than not to. It is also best to install them as soon as possible after they are released by Microsoft, because computer criminals often use the information in the security update to figure out how to attack computers that haven't had the update applied. In the XP start menu select Control Panel, then click Switch to Classic View in the left-hand panel, then select Automatic Updates. The Automatic Updates page allows you to turn automatic updates off, and also has a link to the Windows Update website so you can get updates manually. Once you are comfortable with the concept, I recommend leaving Automatic Updates turned on. I will respond via the reflector in the hope that this information is useful to some other list members. Regards, Paul ZL3IN > Anyone know how safe these automatic Windoze > updates my computer wants to do are? RE: [Elecraft] K2 RECEIVER: WHERE ARE THE SIGNALS?
Hi Bob, Thanks for the suggestion. However, the solution is actually way simpler than that. All of our un-modules already have a silk-screened pin 1 indicator adjacent to every male header. Although the K2 RF board silkscreen lacks a pin one indicator at RF-J14, when properly installed the text on all of our un-module headers appears right-side-up when viewing the K2 from the front. This subject is addressed in our User's Guide. In spite of these instructions, Ken and I are also considering adding the annotated image of his K2 #5048 (that's shown on our website) to the printed documentation that's provided with our kits, to ensure that no one else runs into a similar problem. That image is at http://home.cfl.rr.com/garyhvizdak/KI4GGX/unpcbs/Product~Description/Stock~K 2~PCB~Upgrade~Parts~Kits.htm#Annotated_Image_of_5048 73, Gary, KI4GGX K2 #4067 Bob wrote ... Re: [Elecraft] Another K1 10 meter project
Hi Bill, I found that jumpering the BPF or even the LPF when testing, gave me results similar to what you are seeing. I didn't start to see useful results until I had all the parts for all three filter sections completed. Do you have the LPF set up completely? I'm not in a position at the moment to test my K1 with a RF probe, too many other projects on the workbench right now so I can't compare the values along the TX path with what you are seeing. There's one other thing... I was looking at some digital photos I took of my K1 RF board and it looks like I removed R31 and R32 (they are in parallel with each other and sit between the Driver output / PA input and ground - see pp.79 in the K1 manual) but I don't have anything in my notes about it. I don't remember removing them, but I know I had a few late nights where I was trying everything I could think of, to get the 10M board to work. I thought maybe I had moved them to the bottom of the RF board, and/or replaced them with another value of resistor, but I just had a quick look at the bottom of the RF board and found that R31 and R32 are in fact missing. I apologize for the mistake / omission in the information I posted. 73 de Stephanie va3uxb K2#5311 - K1#2132 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Another K1 10 meter project
I'm launched on experiment to put K1 on 10 meters -- using 26.170 MHz xtal at Wayne's suggestion (and generous contribution). This should make the whole project easier with lower frequency crystal and more premix output, but I've run into a snag and seek some advice. Instrumentation here is pretty crude -- RF probe and HF receiver. RF probe uses 1N914 vice 1N34A and that makes a difference in readings for low level signals. 10 meter filters are built as Band 1 on a KFL1-2 board with 80 meters working like gangbusters as Band 1, my basis for comparison -- acknowledging potential difference in freq response for the probe. The premix filter is same as for 17 meters, peaks nicely and right mixing product verified with HF receiver. Bandpass filter and RF board mods follow design by Stephanie Maks, VA3UXB. This includes change to R11 on RF board and absence of L-section at output of BPF. For now, the output filter is jumpered across - just seeking raw output into dummy load. Best I can achieve is a hair under 200 mW output. That level does peak with slugs in L7 and L8 very near all the way down. No problem hearing low level 10 meter signal generated in shack. Signal is dying either within the BPF or from mismatch at its output. Comparison with 80 meters yields 1.06 volts at test point TR1 for 10 meters vs 0.28 volts for 80 meters. The 80 meter signal drops to 150 mV at test point BPF, but the 10 meter signal drops like a stone to 16 mV at the same point, so difference in RF probe freq response cannot be an issue. I'm stumped over great difference from Stephanie's results. Caps in the bandpass filter are high quality from Elecraft. My only immediate source for filter changes, however, is limited to Radio Shack - grand variety and questionable quality. Anybody else been down this path and have ideas? [Elecraft] Digital mode interface
To all you PSK-31 folks out there. If you haven't adapted a computer interface yet here's an idea. I just finished adding an interface very similar to Tom Hammond's circuit that's posted on the elecraft page to my K2. The only difference is that I pass the audio signal to unused pin-8 of the microphone plug (ICOM IC-HM12) rather than add a connector on the back. This signal then runs into an MFJ soundcard interface MFJ-1275 where it is connected to the radio audio output circuit. This makes a nice interface and liberates the volume control and speaker of the K2 while running digital ops. The MFJ inerface box switches out the mic when running digital modes. I plan to adapt it to interface my KAM+ TNC too. I'll mount a switch on the front of the MFJ interface to switch the TNC in and out. If anybody on the Elecraft reflector needs Guyana on RTTY, this will be a good opportunity. 73 de K7ZUM Ken in Gres"HAM" Ore btw, I don't know if anybody else on the reflector does this, but everytime I turn my K2 on, and use if on a DX-ped hour after hour, I sit and look at this itty bitty radio, and am just amazed at how something so small, can be so good ! anybody else do this ? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I finally built my radio, #1348, and it works just fine. Many thanks to the owners/designers of Elecraft, to Don W3FPR who answered my tech inquiry and to Val and Victoria who packed the many parts so carefully. [Elecraft] Elecraft QSO Party Software
As previously posted, the rules for the EQP have been re-written for 2006. Some of the changes, mainly the format for sending Elecraft serial number, was done so that existing software can properly score your log. Software known to support the ARCI QSO Parties, and therefore the EQP include NA and TRLog (DOS) and N1MM Logger (Windows). I've written a template file for NA (the .CRT file) so that it will correctly score the EQP. If you are going to use NA and wish to have this file, drop me an e-mail and I will forward it to you. If you are going to use either TRLog or N1MM, set up your log for the ARCI QSO Party. Some final tweaking of your summary may be necessary following the contest. Other loggers will also work, but will require additional tweaking of the summary. I will likely be in Freeport, Grand Bahama on business next weekend when the EQP takes place, but will try to participate at least part time if possible. My Bahamas call is C6AKQ. If the trip doesn't take place, I'll participate from home in both the EQP and SOC Marathon Sprint. -- 73, Bob Patten, N4BPPlantation, FL E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.qsl.net/n4bp QRP ARCI #3412SOC #1ARS #799SMIRK #6625 FISTS #7871 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K2 RECEIVER: WHERE ARE THE SIGNALS?
Manuel, No need to re-do the alignment. Later, you will re-peak L1 and L2 in the transmit mode as a final step which provides a more defined peak than one can hear in receive. A signal generator will not be required. If you tuned L34 with the weak 7000 kHz birdie as instructed in the manual, that is correct, no re-do is necessary. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I had my 160 plug-in Rework Eliminator plugged-in backwards... > ... > Because of the header's position shall I do the whole > calibration/alignment > step-by-step (page 60 to page 64) procedure of PART II all over > again? [Elecraft] K2 RECEIVER: WHERE ARE THE SIGNALS?
Gentlemen: the signals are here! I had my 160 plug-in Rework Eliminator plugged-in backwards... (my apologies to Gary and Ken!) I had looked at all headers so many times and it never looked wrong to me until Don wrote the word "position" in his message. The good part is, indeed these Rework Eliminators do their job. Now I can go ahead and install all options with no fear. Thank you very much indeed Don, Bob, Jim and José for your words of wisdom and guidance. I woke up this morning, saw your messages, went to the radio, change de the Header's position and my faithful GP gave me a lot of signals, and strong ones too, immediately. What a relief! Because of the header's position shall I do the whole calibration/alignment step-by-step (page 60 to page 64) procedure of PART II all over again? I am also concerned about final adjustments of L34 and L1+L2 as I have to rely on regular noise to do that. No signal generator here. The 7000 khz weak internally-generated signal is there. By the way: my good old childhood friend, José - CT1AOZ, knows my inabilities to deal with components and soldering irons since we were high school kids and he has been very worried about me hi hi Relax Zé...the K2 is coming on with a little help from my friends...Be proud old chap. 73 Manuel LU5OM CT4IK - Original Message - From: "J ALBU" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Manuel Wilches" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Saturday, February 25, 2006 4:26 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 RECEIVER: WHERE ARE THE SIGNALS? Greetings from Argentina. I am building K2 # 5310 I have purchased all Rework Eliminators (they were a breeze to install, by the way and are very neat indeed!) and I have all K2 options except 60 meters, i.e. 160mtrs - DSP - NB - K2/100 - SSB. I have completed part II of the RF board and the "Alignment and Test, Part II". All values tested, calibrations, voltage measurements etc. were within the specs indicated in the K2 manual. During assembly of the FP and CB all tests required were also on target. I have built and used the Frq. probe, the RF probe and the N0SS probe. I do not have a signal generator or any other instrumentation. I have a DMM. All my Rework Eliminators are plugged in. The problem: the receiver has full noise (as though it worked ok) but when I connect an antenna (40 meters GP) I do not hear any signals. I heard a CP4 perhaps RST 519. Extremely weak. I tried N0SS's probe and I pick up a strong signal through all test points up to C225. I have no signal pick up there nor at C226 or C227. I did not check W6 and W1 because I did not install those jumpers (I followed the Rework Eliminators instructions that call for other steps). I do not know if there is an alternative test point for those. I have been through the usual checks for bad solders etc. I have used the proper solder and a controlled temp soldering station. I would very much appreciate your assistance and guidance. I have had the K2 on for hours now (playing with the keyer) and there has been no change. It looks great, that is for sure! [Elecraft] Unused back panel holes
Hi All, Regarding the unused holes on the K2 back-panel.. I've been thinking about plugging these with rubber plugs, as I think the holes/green tape looks a little unsightly. I wonder if anyone has done this, and whether anyone knows a source of plugs that are suitable and the correct size. I'm specifically looking for the plugs for the 2 sets of XVTR holes, as all the rest are soon to be filled in with accessories..
