Re: [Elecraft] Microphone for K2

2006-05-07 Thread Hank Kohl K8DD

Sara

The Kenwood MC-43S is a good microphone, however you said for Contests
/ Dxpeditions.
It is very difficult to either keep a log sheet with pen or pencil, or
to type on the keyboard
and picking up the microphone on every QSO.

I would recommend one of the Heil Prosets, and the Heil foot switch to
give you hands-
free operation and make it easy to log the QSO's while you are talking.
We have used
them with the K2 on several DX trips to FP, V47, etc and they have
preformed very well
with the K2 (and other radios). My favorite with the K2 is the Heil
Proset IC with the

Heil Icom adapter, and the K2 microphone header set up for Icom.

[Elecraft] XV50 TRANSVERTER - L17

2006-05-07 Thread Chris Page
Two questions about the XV50 transverter, please?

1. The Alignment and Test on Page 25 of the Owner's Manual says the
core of L17 (along with L1, L10 and L11) should be removed and
discarded as it will not be used.

On the following page is a table telling you how to preset the slugs
in the inductors for each transverter. For the XV50 it says the slug
in L17 should be set two turns down from the top.

What page is correct, please?

2. The slug in L13 is cracked and doesn't turn. Any tips on how to
remove it without damaging the inductor?

If the answer to question 1 is page 25, then I can use the slug from
L17 to replace the broken one in L13, otherwise I assume I can use
the slug from L1 which appears to be the same size?

Thanks for any help and advice.

[Elecraft] Parasitic oscillation

2006-05-07 Thread Stan Rife
I built my K2 SN-4216 2 years ago and all seemed well for those 2
years. I had a couple of bumps in the road here and there, but nothing
serious...nothing that was not easily resolved. I was a happy camper. I did
find that my power adjustment on R26 was way off. I thought I had 100w
output, when in fact, thanks to Don Wilhelm and Tom Hammond, there was only
65w coming out of the KPA-100.

With a solid method in hand, and the rig hooked up to a dummyload, I
measured the RF voltage at the dummyload with my trusty Elecraft RF probe,
did the math that was provided to me, and found what the actual output was.
That was easily adjusted and all is well, again. Also, Don, or Tom (can't
remember which) gave me this nifty method for adjusting R27. It worked fine
and now I am confident that the SWR bridge is reading correctly.

I recently built the KAT-100-1, put it in line and all seemed fine
until I tried tuning on 40m. It appeared that I was getting RF in to the
tuner and the K2, as the tuner would go crazy when trying to tune it on 40m,
and on the occasion that I could get it to tune, when I would transmit on
phone the leds on the KAT0-100 would flash and give me a real light show. It
would also cause the K2 to do a RESET. I found that I could reduce power to
below 10 watts, and it would tune fine on 40m. Then turning the power back
up and transmitting on phone the leds would still go crazy.

Tom Hammond contacted me and suggested I try something that he had
come up with. He explained that the problem was more than likely a parasitic
occilation, possibly just outside the 40m band. He sent a pictorial of the
modification that he was suggesting. It just consisted of moving the RFC at
the SO-239 over a bit, a little further away from the SO-239. It took me
about 30 minutes start to finish, and it cured my problem.

Now the K2-100/KAT-100-1 work great together, as they are supposed
to. Occilations gone, power output up were it is supposed to be on the
K2-100 and the metering is more accurate now.

Before, I was fat, dum and happy. Now, I am still fat, a little
smarter and still happy.

Thanks a million for being there Tom and Don.

[Elecraft] K2/100 on VU4

2006-05-07 Thread Frank DL4KQ

Hi all,

I just resturned yesterday from VU4 where we have been using (once again)
several K2/100`s during the operations.

It is always impressing how good these little rigs work.

One fully loaded K2 (+ps, small amp) has been presented to a mainland VU ham
(VU3RSB) so that he can go ahead now with his planned Indian IOTA AS-New
activations.
Another fully loaded K2 + KPA100/KAT100 + ps + Heil headset + SIGMA 5 + 40 m
dipole and so on has been presented by Doug, N6TQS, and me to the
Polytechnic College at Pt. Blair (to YL Molly, VU3VPX and YL Lizzy, VU3VPY
after we found out that now support to them showed up .

The station has been set up by me on april 04.

The next signals you will hear from VU4 will be K2 signals !

This is VERY easy to do. Elecraft has all the parts except the band crystal.
I built an 80/160 meter board and it works exceptionally well. I'm sure the
original person who did

If not, I'll look it up in my archives.

[Elecraft] Anyone ever run across this quirk?

2006-05-07 Thread Joseph Reed
I have a K2 which has a strange quirk, it has developed a thump when it
switches from transmit to receive in cw when set for full QSK. Very annoying,
and when trying to DX at fast cw speeds, I can't tell what the DX op is
sending. However, if I change the T-R delay to .01 it doesn't appear.

This is a pretty stock K2 with KSB2, KNB2, KAF2, K60XV, KAT2 and K160RX. Any
ideas as to how I can get back to QSK?

This issue was handled off-line. So, for any lurkers who may have the same

1) The tuning slug should be left in L17 on all transverters.

2) If, during alignment, it is found that maximum output is obtained with
the slug out of the top of the coil, remove the slug completely.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for May 7th 8th, 2006

2006-05-07 Thread Kevin Rock

Hello All,
QRN started early on 20 meters and got much worse on 40. My ears have
a steady ringing sound like I've been sitting in front of the speakers at
a Dead concert! Rest in Peace Jerry! At times I could grab a letter
between the static crashes. Other times I knew there was someone there
but could not catch a character. W1TF twice got checked in by the skin of
his teeth. I caught W1TF as the QSB raised him above the noise just
enough to copy his call sign.
Ric was much stronger on 40 than he had been on 20 meters but his first
check in set another landmark. We've got three folks in the one hundred
plus check-in club! Congratulations Ric! Sometime early next month we
will celebrate our third anniversary. It is nice to know folks are still
enjoying the run. The first ECN was on June 7th, 2003; there were three
check-ins: VE1RGB, W0CZ, and N5IB. Now to work on keeping my hearing
after days like today! Tom mentioned he had storms all around him when we
started the net at 0228z. I called him around 20 after the hour but did
not expect to hear him. I was right. Most likely he had to close down
his station from the sound of things.

On 14050 kHz at 2258z:
VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968QNI #100!!! WooHoo! Another one in the
century club!

W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031 QNI #115!!
W1TF - Ty - GA - K1 - 1423

On 7045 kHz at 0228z:
N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - 008
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031
VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968

W1TF - Ty - GA - K1 - 1423 QNI #35!!
N6JW - John - CA - K2 - 3290 QNI #40!!

ECN has become a regular part of each Sunday afternoon and evening. Pat
and I used to celebrate the day with a fine dinner and talk about how you
all were doing. She'd ask about Bruce's kids and especially about his
daughter going to Beloit College. She wanted to hear what the weather was
like in North Dakota when I mentioned Ken had checked in. She would laugh
at Tom's comments about this or that and ask if Sam had checked in. Then
we would set the map out and see where all the folks were located and if
there were any patterns. Often she would ask about which antenna I'd used
to work this or that operator. Then when a DX station would check in she
would get excited about going to Wales again or visiting New Zealand for
the first time. Those were great times. ECN will stay a regular part of
my Sundays so I can stay in touch with my friends and remember a little of
her as I do so.
If there are any errors in the above lists please do not hesitate to send
them to me. I'll correct the database and post the pertinent details.

Have a good week.

RE: [Elecraft] K1 on 160m ?

2006-05-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
Peter,

Yes, I have done it - Instructions for adding 160 and 80 meters to a 2 band
module on the K1 follow:

Not quite a full Elecraft 160m 80m board, but you can do it this way -
order a 2 band board for 80m and any other band, PLUS, order the following
components (Elecraft has them all except the crystal) - here are the
instructions for how I did it: --
maybe you can make a deal with someone at Elecraft to ship a ''1 band board
and the other needed parts

I ordered the following from Elecraft:

Capacitors:
2 - E530002 1500 pf capacitor
3 - E530003 2700 pf capacitor
2 - E530005 1200 pf capacitor
2 - E530035 1800 pf capacitor
2 - E530052 560 pf capacitor
2 - E530053 680 pf capacitor
1 - E53005812 pf capacitor

Inductors:
1 - E690007 33 uh inductor
2 - E690001 4.7 uh variable inductor (wide tuning slot)

Toroid cores:
2 - E680001 T44-1 or T50-1 toroid cores (blue color)

I also ordered a 9.800 mHz crystal (HC-49 case 20 pf load capacitance) from
International Crystal Manufacturing www.icmfg.com.

If you are planning to use the K1 ATU with this board, you should also order
the P1 (3 pin) and P2 (10 pin - 5 x 2) headers from Elecraft.

The parts from Elecraft (without the headers) were less than $15 and the
crystal was priced at $17.95 - not an unreasonable price IMHO.

I assembled the 2 band board with the 80 meter components in the band 2
locations as indicated in the instructions - except for L5 and L6 were left
empty at this time.

Next, the low- pass toroids were wound with 21 turns (20 inches of wire) on
the T50-1 (blue) cores, and soldered into the L9 and L10 positions.

The 4.7 uH variable inductors were soldered in the positions for L5 and L6.
On the bottom of the board, 1200 pf capacitors were soldered across L5 and
L6 (the outer pins on the side of the can with 3 pins).

The 33 uH inductor goes into the position marked for C13. Form the leads
under the inductor body so that the leads fit into the holes - my inductor
is parallel with the board and tucked between the bandpass filter cans.

Mount the 9.8 mHz crystal at the X1 position and solder the grounding wire
to the side of the can (or top if you prefer).

The remaining capacitors are fitted into the following positions:
C1 C5 - 680 pf
C2 C4 - 2700 pf
C3 - 12 pf

C11 C15 - 1800 pf
C12 C14 - 560 pf
C21 C23 - 1500 pf
C22- 2700 pf

You should now have all the holes filled, and can proceed to align the 2
band board following the instructions in the K1 manual. Mine came up with
no trouble at all.

Don W3FPR

Hi Elecrafters.. maybe that question has already been posted, but I ask it
again. I plan to use an IC-706 MKIIG for SSB/VHF operations and a K2 for CW
only. I have a Daiwa CS-201 coax switch. The ''output'' of the switch will
go to an ATU (LDG AT-100Pro), and the inputs to each of the rig.

That switch shorts the unused output connector. If by distraction I use the
K2 when the switch is at '706' position's, maybe I risk to damage the
finals of the K2 (and same problem at inverse for the 706).

My question: Is the ''switch'' approach a relatively safe solution, or is
is better to manually change the setup via coax permutation?

I have the same problem here, but I found a hardware solution that might be
helpful. The MFJ safety switch 1703 crosses the lines from two radios to two
output lines. You can connect a dummy load to one antenna port so there is
always either the antenna or the dummy load connected to either radio.

Re: [Elecraft] Microphone for K2

Hello Sara -

I recommend the Kenwood MC-43S microphone. It plugs straight into the
K2 microphone connector and gives excellent quality. The MC-43S has UP
and DOWN buttons which, when used with the K2, changes between VFO A and
B. This is very useful for contest working.

I hope that helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Microphone for K2

Hi Sara

I would second David's comment on the Kenwood MC-43S. In addition, the
necessary links on the K2 are adjacent to each other for a Kenwood
microphone so you can use computer jumpers rather than having to
solder wires. The MC-43S is very good value, cost here in the UK is
currently 17 pounds sterling, $32 (US) or 1417 Rupees, all plus tax.
