How soon will it be before we see rigs that have no provision to use CW?

[Elecraft] Your website

2006-12-15 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson

Tom
Your website is great!! There is a wealth of information there and I have
just started to learn from it. I have just completed my K2 and am doing a
lot of learning and enjoying the rig a lot.

One thing I might comment on is the Spectrogram program you offer a link to.

Well I needed to align my ssb filter and after downloading the software I
could not get any audio from the rig to the application. The K2 audio was
getting into my computer and I could use MIXW to see and work PSK31
stations.

So I tried using the spectrum scope in MIXW and it did the job fine. I could
tweak the SSB filters for the best response using noise. I think Digipan
will also work. You have to be careful on how to interpret the frequency
markers but they are there.

Just thought I would pass this on

Thanks for a great source of information.

[Elecraft] Solvent

2006-12-15 Thread Dave & Jeanne Robertson
I have been working in electronics for over 30 years and I find that though
rosin flux is somewhat inert under normal conditions it can lead to
corrosion in certain circumstances. On all my portions of the K2 system I
have built
I have removed the flux using alcohol or flux solvent. You have to be
careful about certain plastics that could be affected by various cleaner
solutions but most of today's components seem to resist any solvent damage
if the proper flux removing solvents are used.

Be careful as the solvents can be flammable and not the greatest thing to
breathe. Also be certain all the cleaner has been removed from the circuit
board before applying power.

I hope this information is of some help.

[Elecraft] code test abolished - cross post from cw ml

2006-12-15 Thread Ward Willats

FCC MODIFIES AMATEUR RADIO SERVICE RULES,
ELIMINATING MORSE CODE EXAM REQUIREMENTS AND
ADDRESSING ARRL PETITION FOR RECONSIDERATION

Washington, D.C. - Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
adopted a Report and Order and Order on Reconsideration (Order) that
modifies the rules for the Amateur Radio Service by revising the
examination requirements for obtaining a General Class or Amateur
Extra Class amateur radio operator license and revising the operating
privileges for Technician Class licensees. In addition, the Order
resolves a petition filed by the American Radio Relay League, Inc.
(ARRL) for partial reconsideration of an FCC Order on amateur service
rules released on October 10, 2006.

The current amateur service operator license structure contains three
classes of amateur radio operator licenses: Technician Class,
General Class, and Amateur Extra Class. General Class and Amateur
Extra Class licensees are permitted to operate in Amateur bands below
30 MHz, while the introductory Technician Class licensees are only
permitted to operate in bands above 30 MHz. Prior to today's action,
the FCC, in accordance with international radio regulations, required
applicants for General Class and Amateur Extra Class operator
licenses to pass a five words-per-minute Morse code examination.
Today's Order eliminates that requirement for General and Amateur
Extra licensees. This change reflects revisions to international
radio regulations made at the International Telecommunication Union's
2003 World Radio Conference (WRC-03), which authorized each country
to determine whether to require that individuals demonstrate Morse
code proficiency in order to qualify for an amateur radio license
with transmitting privileges on frequencies below 30 MHz. This
change eliminates an unnecessary regulatory burden that may
discourage current amateur radio operators from advancing their
skills and participating more fully in the benefits of amateur radio.

Today's Order also revises the operating privileges for Technician
Class licensees by eliminating a disparity in the operating
privileges for the Technician Class and Technician Plus Class
licensees. Technician Class licensees are authorized operating
privileges on all amateur frequencies above 30 MHz. The Technician
Plus Class license, which is an operator license class that existed
prior the FCC's simplification of the amateur license structure in
1999 and was grandfathered after that time, authorized operating
privileges on all amateur frequencies above 30 MHz, as well as
frequency segments in four HF bands (below 30 MHz) after the
successful completion of a Morse code examination. With today's
elimination of the Morse code exam requirements, the FCC concluded
that the disparity between the operating privileges of Technician
Class licensees and Technician Plus Class licensees should not be
retained. Therefore, the FCC, in today's action, afforded Technician
and Technician Plus licensees identical operating privileges.

Finally, today's Order resolved a petition filed by the ARRL for
partial reconsideration of an FCC Order released on October 10, 2006
(FCC 06-149). In this Order, the FCC authorized amateur stations to
transmit voice communications on additional frequencies in certain
amateur service bands, including the 75 meter (m) band, which is
authorized only for certain wideband voice and image communications.
The ARRL argued that the 75 m band should not have been expanded
below 3635 kHz, in order to protect automatically controlled digital
stations operating in the 3620-3635 kHz portion of the 80 m band.
The FCC concluded that these stations can be protected by providing
alternate spectrum in the 3585-3600 kHz frequency segment.

Action by the Commission on December 15, 2006, by Report and Order
and Order on Reconsideration. Chairman Martin and Commissioners
Copps, Adelstein, Tate, and McDowell.

[Elecraft] SN 5901

2006-12-15 Thread charles
Started on SN 5901 Friday 15th December.

I built the basic 15w K2 SN 439 just for CW and it took me12 days to complete.
That one really did have "Mojo" built in - my first contact was Mauritus
Island on 20 metres.

Someone later took a liking to my K2 and I foolishly sold it :-((

5901 will have SSB, 160m, Noise Blanker, DSP, 100w PA and the 150w autotuner,
so it's going to take me quite a while longer than the first one. Please wish
me luck. Do I need to pray for the "Mojo" this time or is it still
automatically part of the kit? I didn't find it when I did the inventory
check :-)

[Elecraft] OT: FS: 60 MHz Fluke 92B "Scopemeter"

2006-12-15 Thread Jim Sheldon
I have for sale a used Fluke model 92B "ScopeMeter". This is a digital LCD
Dual Trace, 60 MHz Oscilloscope/digital multimeter. When new in 1998, it
cost a bit over $2000.00 This one has seen service, but is in excellent
operating condition. Original NiCD Battery is long deceased, but it will
operate quite well on 4 alkaline "C" cells, or you can make up a new pack
easy enough. The dead one will be included to give proper dimensions and
contact points. Included are a set of standard test leads and one 60 MHz
10X/1X scope probe. The 185 page manual is included in a PDF file on a CD
as the paper manual wasn't with it when I received it. Also included is the
special "wall wart" that will run the scopemeter and also charge the NiCD
pack if one is inserted. Rechargable battery pack requires a special
terminal arrangement so Alkaline C cells aren't accidentally blown up by the
wall wart/charger. The case has never been opened by anyone other than the
factory calibration lab, and the original seal is intact. It was last
factory calibrated in 2000, but in cross checking with other scopes and
meters, it is still within it's rated 5%.

I'm asking $700 shipped anywhere in the US (can't export it), but the price
is somewhat negotiable.

Anyone seriously interested please contact me off the reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] This old dog has a new trick(Ellecraft)

2006-12-15 Thread David Lankshear
I know the feeling, Don. As an ex radio op, it's very frustrating to have
difficulty controlling the key. I can, with effort, produce reasonable CW
on a straight key at about 20wpm but it's become a strain. I used to use a
mechanical bug quite happily at decent cruising speeds, but these days with
finger joints that lock up without warning, my CW from bug or paddle is not
something to inflict on the rest of the world HI!.

I didn't want software to do my receiving (at least the ears and brain still
work well enough to cope with that) but wanted a keyboard (which I find
fairly forgiving of my finger lockups) to generate the code.

I've built an Alspaugh keyboard and am very pleased with it. No noisy
computer anywhere near the rig, just a computer keyboard and a small PCB,
see here.

http://www.mtechnologies.com/alspaugh/

(Milestone's Marshall Emm was most helpful, too. A real "good guy".)

Like Elecraft's mini-modules, it's not been designed with DIY casing in
mind, but after some critical surgery, it's in a neat box and now works very
well indeed after hanging a load of filter toroids on the lead from the
keyboard, as RF in the shack drove it crazy. I've painted out the unused
keys on my keyboard with modellers' enamel paint and have added the special
symbols, AR, BK, SK etc. using rub-down lettering, before applying several
sealing coats of transparent enamel gloss.

The PCB quality is sound, but not in the same class as those from Elecraft,
so don't "overcook" any of the pads while soldering.

2006-12-15 Thread Darwin, Keith
Completing the K2 and getting it working is no small task. Doing it
with shaky hands is an even bigger accomplishment. Congratulations!

As to sending CW, would it be possible to send with a straight key using
European style? I'd think a straight key with medium tension and medium
spacing would be rather immune to false "triggering" and may allow you
to send using the larger muscles of the arm.
