Re: [Elecraft] rust remover

2007-08-28 Thread AJSOENKE
If it's just a small bit of surface rust - try a little coca-cola on a
'Q-Tip'. Then rinse with clean water and follow up with an alcohol swab. The
Coke has just enough Phosphoric acid to be effective and after the water swab
rinse - the alcohol will dry it better than a paper towel to keep it from
re-rusting. A dab of WD-40 on a 'Q'-Tip will prevent further rust if it won't
affect anything else.

Yes, it is. DE-15P is the mating connector.

Yes, the Accessory port is a standard DE15S jack and the rear panel drawing
is slightly in error by showing only 14 pins. I ordered a supply of the
mating DE15P connectors from Mouser and made up some cables for FSK, PTT and
the AuxBus to the KRC2.

No, it was a spurious emission from something but I'm not sure what.
My latest experiment of playing with L34 and SG is much cleaner:

http://tinyurl.com/26hfrb

AF Gain was set around 2-o'clock with very little gain on the line
input level of the sound card as shown here:

http://tinyurl.com/2dzho4

I can get rid of the noise completely as spectrogram sees it but the
signal drops about -25 dB. I hear white noise along with the signal
when spectrogram sees nothing.

JT and Don,

Could the weak(-53 dB) spike just be 2nd harmonic of the audio
fundamental spike? The main spike looks a bit lower than 600 Hz?
Just a thought to save looking for another source of the spurious
signal.

73,

K2 #5569

 Quoting Don Wilhelm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

JT,

Turn the AF gain (or the soundcard line-in setting) up a bit until the
noise in the passband becomes a bit greater. After that, adjust L34
for the greatest difference between the signal and the noise floor.
Expect some difficulty in determining the proper point - the peak S/N
ratio is still quite broad. If you do not discern any improvement,
just set the slug for the greatest amplitude on the Spectrogram display
and be done with it. If you cannot discern the difference in S/N ratio
with either your ears or with the Spectrogram display, then the setting
that gives the greatest amplitude is the correct one (and it is a broad
setting). If your 'best' setting is very far from 1 to 2 turns from
the top of the coil, then check things again because something is wrong
(most likely a soldering problem).

The spike is likely a result of pickup from some local source - check
the things in your house as a first course of action.

Normally, if you wanted a single RX antenna to feed both receivers, you'd
have K2 selecting RX ANT and K1 in the "shared RF path mode". Then, the
internal 3 dB splitter in the K3 would be operative, i.e., with BSET on, the
RX icon should be off ... which indicates the second receiver is sharing the
main receive RF path with the main.

So, while you COULD set it up so both receivers were using their RX antenna
connectors and therefore connected together via the simple Y-adapter, you
should avoid doing so. Instead, when using a Y-adapter to connect one
receive antenna to both the RX ANT and AUX RF jacks, always make sure the
display RX icon is not simultaneously lit for both the 'ON' and 'OFF' states
of BSET.

Just convert it:

PdBm=20*log(V/Vo)

where Ro=50 ohm, Pm = 0.001 W, thus Vo=sqrt(0.001*50)= 0.224 V

so for Pdbm = -136:

V=Vo*10^(-136/20)
...

V = 35nV or 0.035uV!

I have been trying to figure out where the

The info on the Elecraft web page for the K3 is
different, and I am not sure how one compares...

K3 sensitivity is listed as -136, while the Sherwood page shows
microvolt's.

Would that correspond to the Sherwood noise floor?
What about the preamp?

a. Take out the T1 transformer and try to rewind and reinstall it?
b. OR change the R11 and R30 to their PowerMod values?

[Elecraft] K3 Receiver Antenna Routing

2007-08-28 Thread Gary Hvizdak
The second paragraph from the bottom one page 1 reads ...

Relay K1 allows the subreceiver to share the main receiver's RF source, or
use its auxiliary RF input. This means that two receiving antennas could be
used. But it's also possible to route a single receiving antenna to both the
RX ANT IN and AUX RF jacks using a "Y" adapter. This would allow the
subreceiver to use the antenna connected to RX ANT IN even if the main
receiver were using ANT 1. No external splitter is required because only
one of the receivers will be connected to the receiving antenna at a time.

[Elecraft] Antenna selection diagrams

2007-08-28 Thread dj7mgq
Hallo,

after taking a quick peek at the new diagrams (thank you Wayne!), I have two
short comments/questions:

1) "...image rejection will be best when sharing the main path..."

How much does the image rejection change when not routing through the
transmitter low passes?

An image rejection of (worst case) 70dB could be better. However, knowing
Elecraft, the specification is likely to be conservative, so I would think that
the image and spurious rejection in the RX, especially where it counts, will be
better.

2) It looks as if the main RX, by default, can not be routed to the AuxRF jack.
Is this correct?

[Elecraft] K2 mike question...

2007-08-28 Thread Steve Kallal
I just finished the KSB2 option for my K2. I wired P1 for the ICOM mikes. I
have a GM-4 Heil boom mike with an ICOM cable. I also have the HM-36 ICOM
mike. I was able to get the GM-4 to work without the 10k resistor. The HM-36
requires the resistor, which I haven't hooked up yet.

Can the Heil GM-4 work with the 10k hooked up from AF to 5V? If so it would
make my setup a little easier.

Another idea is to wire P1 for a Kenwood setup. I still have the Kenwood
cable for my GM-4 sitting around somewhere. That way I could use the Heil
mikes designed for the K2. Actually the Kenwood and Elecraft mikes are wire
almost identically. The only difference I see between the two, is the
resistor used for the Elecraft mikes. Since the Elecraft mikes are Heil
mike, I wonder if the GM-4 with the Kenwood cable would work with the
resistor included.
