[Elecraft] K3 and NUE-PSK

2008-04-09 Thread Paul Ryan
Hello All,

My NUE-PSK Digital Modem arrived today and I'm getting ready to wire it to the
K3. I searched the archives but didn't see any posts on anyone successfully
wiring it up and what choices they made. If someone has, I'd like to hear
your thoughts and experiences.

Lacking any other data from the group, I'm inclined to wire the modem's AUDIO
OUT line to the KIO3's MIC-MONO jack and set MAIN:MIC SEL to RP, Low Z and
Bias OFF.Then wire the AUDIO IN to the KIO3's PHONES jack with a stereo
plug but only connect to the tip for mono audio. The PTT will go to the PTT
IN on the lower panel. Select DATA-A mode for operation.

If anyone sees a problem, or knows a better way, please let me know.

Thanks and 73,
Paul, N0KIA

Several K3 field testers are putting together a table at the Contest Banquet

K6KR (author of K3 Utility), AE6Y, N6RA, N6XI and maybe N6TR. The banquet is
$35 per person, not including wine. If you would like to join us, please let

Whe M$ no longer supports reinstallation of XP, the legal status of

I'm looking for a device that I can plug into the Headphone jack of a
hand-held radio (scanner, HT. etc) and allow me to use the "single ear
teardrop" type of Bluetooth earphone. Microphone capability not needed
or wanted. When I looked for this a while ago I was overloaded by
jargon (and I'm a graduate engineer!) the bottom line of which was that
the encoding protocol used for such earphones was different from the
"double ear" type of music earphones.

DW,

Just walk through the authorization steps - if you don't have an
internet connection, use the phone.
I have done it many times. The only thing they want to know is how many
machines your copy is running on - if the answer is 1, they will
authorize it. It sometimes takes a bit of effort, but it gets the job
done - and legally.

I have done it several times when a motherboard or hard drive has died -
in addition to my own 5 XP machines, I maintain 10 XP computers on our
church network, and I have had to re-load XP several times over the past
few years - the process may be a bit lengthy, but never any real problem.

While Ubuntu is a viable alternative, there are several applications
that I like (Ham Radio Deluxe for instance) that will not work on
Ubuntu, so I stick with Windows 2K and XP.

I have spent the last couple of hours Googling for information on Ubuntu.
Since this PC will only be used in my shack for radio stuff, I'm going to
load Ubuntu and forget about Microsoft (like getting a 600 pound gorilla

The poor man's solution is a CD4514 IC, some diodes and resistors. It will

Also consider the Unified Microsystems BCD-10 at $18.95. You'll probably
need to add 4 pullup resistors.

OK, now that the Katiegram has arrived, I need to think about antenna
switching. I have the following antennas that I want to use with the
K3
Windom for most all bands
Yagi for 20 meters
Yagi for 6 meters (goes to the XV50)
Vertical for 160 meters
Vertical for 6m FM (which is not used with the K2)

Right now, I have a KRC2 that switches the 20m yagi and 160 vertical
on antenna port 2 on the radio. Since the K3 has 4 band decoder (TTL?)
lines coming out of it, it is easy enough to build logic to pull in
the right relay. Can the "DIGOUT" line be used (with proper buffering,
of course) to switch a relay for changing from horizontal to vertical
on 6m? Basically, windom and 6 meter antennas to antenna port 1 (with
the band decoder switching from windom to 6 meters, and digout
selecting wither the vert or horiz) and the 20m beam and 160 vert
switched on antenna port 2?

I have several RelComm RDL-SR002 relays, one of which I am using with
the KRC2 now, so quality relays are not a problem here.

Sorry if this is a bit long, but without equipment in front of me, I
have a hard time visualizing things.

RE: [Elecraft] OT - End of the line for XP

2008-04-09 Thread Darwin, Keith
I too heard XP is going to end soon. I got to use a Windows Vista
machine here at work the last few days.

Vista is terrible. I hate the UI. It is slow to start, very slow to
shut down. Every piece of the OS I bumbled into was worse than the
corresponding piece in XP. Well, the Task Manager was better but that
was it. Networking was worse. Control panel is worse. Start button is
worse.

When my Windows XP machine needs to be replaced, I'll probably switch to
Mac if that's what it takes to avoid Vista.

Unless the policy has changed, and I seriously doubt it, Microsoft allows
you to install XP on three different CPUs. When and if you try to load it on
a forth, the activation process will fail and tell you to call customer
service. I had a motherboard fail and was already on #3. I called customer
service and told them that the old machine was dead and the rep actually
reset me to zero (!) so after loading a new machine I have two left. I was
prepared for a battle but I was boviously quite surprised. Either Microsoft
is trying to work with people who play by the rules (and don't steal
software) or I was just lucky and got the right rep.
In any event, you have nothing but your time to lose by trying to load
another machine and also to ask for help if you need it.

[Elecraft] K3 - Import duties on replacement modules

2008-04-09 Thread Dave G4AON
I see there has been a lot of discussion over vat, duty, shipping
charges, etc. on various items. Just to put the minds of those at rest
who worry about K3 and similar modules that may need returning for
repair, and how to deal with the paperwork of customs, etc.

I recently received a replacement PA unit and driver board for my K3,
this was to resolve a minor spurious problem on the 5 MHz band. The box
was marked something like "warranty replacement parts" and attracted no
tax. Likewise the return assembly and board were marked as faulty for
investigation/disposal by supplier.

Obviously if there are costs involved, such as buying an additional
module, they will quite correctly attract the interest of the customs
people and be charged accordingly.

Re: [Bulk] Re: [Elecraft] Import duties on amateur radio items

2008-04-09 Thread Darrell Bellerive
I can't address this for the EU, but when importing into Canada, the
Government only charges taxes on the value of the goods, not the shipping and
handling.

If the invoice does not clearly show the breakdown of the price then the
government will charge on the total value. That is why it is important for
exporters to clearly show on the invoice the price of the goods, and the
price of shipping and handling as separate line items.

The last invoice I have from Elecraft shows that they do this correctly.

Even though there is no duty on amateur radio equipment into Canada, there are
still charges to pay:
1) Sales taxes. The Federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) at 5% plus any
provincial sales taxes that are applicable.
2) Brokerage fees. If the package comes across the border via a courier such
as UPS or Fedex, then they will charge a brokerage fee for importing the
item. This can be substantial at times. Some couriers have a rate category
that includes the brokerage fees. Another common practice by the couriers is
to deliver the package and then bill later for the brokerage fees. A few
times I thought I had gotten away with no fees, only to get a big bill in the
mail a month later. A package that comes across via the postal system is only
charged a flat $5 fee. That is why I now will only us the postal system for
imports.

Direct from Microsoft (do a search there on Windows XP EOL). The EOL
date for OEM's (those shipping XP on computers) is January 31, 2009.
It will probably be extended beyond that. XP will be around and
supported for quite some time to come.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - End of the line for XP

2008-04-09 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

I have another off topic question about Windows XP. I have a legal copy on a
generic computer that I bought sometime ago. It came with the CD and the
sticker on the outside with the serial number. Can I load this copy on
another computer and get it registered with Microsoft? I have heard horror
stories about registering with Microsoft. I paid for and own this copy of
XP, but can I move it?

Best,

amount of angst over what problems Xp might cause. Drivers were near the top

That was a long time ago in the lifespan of most technology. And Xp has a

the one I'm using now. Even after that, it'll live on. I've got one machine

Re: [Elecraft] K3 QSK artefact

David Cutter wrote:

This is a re-post to see if it attracts comment.

This concerns an audible artefact using QSK cw mode. When either rf
gain or af gain are at maximum, there is an additional noise which
accompanies the Morse characters.

I've noticed the phenomenon that you describe, but it's not exactly an
artifact. Looking at the audio output with a scope shows an absolutely
clean transition between noise and sidetone, or, if the sidetone is
turned down all the way, between noise and silence.

As the sidetone gets louder with respect to the noise, which occurs when
you turn the sidetone level up or the audio or RF gain down, you hear
less 'artifact'.

What I think it is is sort of an auditory illusion caused by the rapidly
pulsing noise, and maybe the sharp rise/fall times of the noise pulses
in between keyed elements (not the sidetone, which is shaped nicely).

I've suggested to Wayne and Lyle that they look at the way they ramp the
gain up and down in QSK, and Wayne has discussed the possibility of
making the tone quality of the sidetone user-modifiable. Maybe they will
look at this when they are done with more urgent matters.

In the meantime, if it bothers you, just change the balance between the
signal audio and the sidetone.

Direct from Microsoft (do a search there on Windows XP EOL). The EOL

It will probably be extended beyond that. XP will be around and

[Elecraft] K3 - FSK hookup to ACC connector

2008-04-09 Thread N2TK

Just want to make sure before I plug it in.

For FSK, the manual states that pin #1 (FSK IN) in ACC jack has a pull-up
resistor to 5V. So I assume the standard NPN interface from a COM port will
work fine for that.

Pin #4(PTT IN) doesn't state it also has a 5V pull-up resistor. Does it so I
can use the same NPN type setup?

By the way, thanks for all the input I have received on setting up for RTTY
with my K3 and DXbase. Based on several inputs I am using Hamscope which
seems to interface well with the K3 and DXbase. AFSK is working fine with
just two cables between the K3 (LINE-IN and LINE-OUT) and audio card on PC.
Now I want to set up for FSK.

The new two-piece shield completely encloses the subreceiver,
providing a high degree of isolation between it and the main
receiver. You'll be able to listen to extremely strong signals in
one receiver without it leaking into the other's I.F., and vice-versa.

The shield will be bright plated for production. It's shown unplated

[Elecraft] Import duties on amateur radio items

No duties or Tax in VK for anything under Aud $1000 (about US $850)
Above $ Aud 1000 you pay 10%.
That is all ! :-)
So you could ask for your K* to be shipped in 2 batches, but than you
pay twice the shipping. So your better off to just pay the tax.

[Elecraft] Import duties on amateur radio items

2008-04-09 Thread Raymond METZGER
Hi Ken,

You're right, there is no custom duty in the EU for Amateur radio parts.

But. there is a Value Added Tax (VAT) applicable to any domestic sale or
import from abroad. This VAT replaces your Sales Tax (around 6 %, but
depending on the State ?)

The rate of this VAT varies from country to country : in France it is 19.6
%, in Germany 19 %. I don't know how much it is in the UK.

Only small value parcels are not subject to this VAT (I've seen a recent
e-mail on the Reflector from Toby about an increase of such applicable limit
in the EU).

I've paid the 19,6 % VAT on my K3 kit, but various smaller items I purchased
from Elecraft have arrived without any VAT charge, although their value
exceeded the limit.

Last comment, Ken, UK is part of the European Union !

Ian White GM3SEK wrote:

And it is waived if the total duty is less than GBP 7, even if the

killer is the Value Added Tax, which is 17.5% in the UK and even higher
in some other EU countries. Unless the item is of small value, or is
below the Customs exemptions for incoming travelers, VAT will normally
be charged on *all* incoming goods.

The other killer is the GBP 8 handling charge by the Post Office for
doing the customs processing on items that exceed the allowance.
Together, these mean that orders over GBP 18 (hopefully more like GBP
100 at the end of the year, but the necessary Statutory Instruments
don't yet exist) are very unattractive, particularly ones just over,
where the GBP 8 is significant.

The other thing that Elecraft need to consider is formalising their
shipping rates for low value orders. If one actually looks at the
official rates and considers a small project item, shipping is
comparable than the cost of the item. However, I suspect, that in
practice, they may be prepared to use postal packets for such items.

The worst thing is that both duty and taxes are applied to the bottom
line of the invoice, the total including both shipping and insurance!
Helpful exporters to the EU will bill for those two service items
separately, so that duty and VAT are applied only to the true value of
the goods. As far as I'm aware, this is a perfectly legal way to
minimize the tax liability.

I am pretty sure that that is illegal tax evasion, if they only include
the goods value on the declaration. The Revenue and Customs document
that explains the current rules for postal shipments makes it very
clear, and cites source legislation, that duty and VAT are based on the
bottom line price, including shipping and insurance.

Shipping and insurance is not counted for gifts sent directly from one
individual to another, and the limit is GBP 36, rather than GBP 18, but
that is not relevant for a company.

I wonder if anyone tops the Icelandic VAT, 24.5%, which is added on the
total package value: Content price + shipping + insurance. Additionally, I
may be charged for the paperwork ($10-20), and to top it all they may
occasionally request a permit from the Post and Telegraph Authorities for
"radio components". This is what I had to go through when ordering my K2 a
couple of months ago.

Last week I received a notice from the customs, which had in its custody an
envelope with a transistor and five ceramic capacitors from Elecraft, marked
with the value of $1. I managed to convince the customs that these were
replacement parts and I had already paid for the original kit earlier, but I
