[Elecraft] K3: Problem with KPA3 #1999

2008-11-03 Thread Michael van Hauten
Hi Folks,
thank you for all your help. Gary adviced me to check all the toroids. L6 on
KPA3 had a bad solder point. The enamel was not in contact wit the board. After
soldering this, the rigg works with more than 100W.

[Elecraft] Re: Do you believe this guy? [hoax]

2008-11-03 Thread wayne burdick

John,

I'm not taking sides, but I just investigated this. It sounded awfully
extreme for someone who had made it this far into a U.S. presidential
candidacy.

As I expected, it's a complete fabrication. The best summary of what
happened is here:

   http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/stance.asp

Obviously, someone is trying to smear Obama by whatever means necessary
on the eve of the election. I'm sure others are working just as hard to
discredit McCain. But I'd recommend checking out chain-mail of this
type before re-sending it. It's easy to do: just pick some portion of
the text and paste it into a google search.

Like insulated wire, SteppIR elements are well enclosed in dielectric tubes so
they may not suffer from precipitation static. Can anyone confirm this?

Jim:

I've heard anecdotal reports that Beverage antennas made of insulated wire
work better than Beverages made with uninsulated wire. Just because the
reports are "anecdotal" doesn't mean that they are untrue, of course. When I
had a station in New Hampshire, I made my Beverages with insulated wire. The
Beverages worked in a predictable fashion on 40 and were worse, pattern
wise, on 20. But they were definitely quieter than the Yagis when there was
precip static going on. So the SNR was better for receiving.

I would think that insulated-wire Yagis would be better for precip than the
usual bare-tubing Yagis. That seems to be the conclusion you're coming to
also. And yes, the top Yagi in a high stack acts as a precipitation drain,
shielding the lower Yagi(s) some. Even a "snake" kind of antenna, with
insulated wire lying on the ground (as W0YK mentioned), can help reception
when precipitation static is happening.

I'd caution you that if you live on a hilltop, placement of the your
antennas compared to the upslope(s) to the hilltop can make a difference in
precip problems. At one time, I lived on a tall hill in San Francisco, with
about a 45 degree slope downwards in the south direction. Storms would come
up from the south and swirl winds violently up that slope, hitting the
antennas from below and creating real precip static (as well as breaking
lots of antennas -- ask W6NL about this too). I didn't have the luxury of
having another antenna on my small lot. But if I did have another antenna
and if it were located back from the slope I would imagine that it would be
better in terms of precip static.

So, the difference between your dipole and the wire Yagi may also involve
placement on your terrain, as well as the use of insulated wire. These
things get complicated.

I've been in whiteouts in southern New Hampshire, but nothing like what you
get in/near VE2. I remember disconnecting coaxes and hearing the arcing
inside the PL-259s when precip static was going on.

I'd like one too. Though I'd settle for a soundcard based one that didn't
come with a whole screenful of SDR software attached to it so I could stick
it in a corner of the screen and still have room for my logging program and
datamode software.

Use PowerSDR with panadaptor hardware like LP-Pan or one of the I/Q
receivers like I do. Position PowerSDR so only the panadaptor panel
shows in the lower left corner of your display, then position your
other software on top of the unneeded portions of PowerSDR. I have a
BUNCH of stuff on my 1680x1050 display: PowerSDR, Writelog with
several panels, etc., etc...

The K3 with PowerSDR panadaptor is the best pan system of all I have
ever used, starting with the Heath panadaptor in the mid-'70's. and
including all 4 radios of the 756 series.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

2008-11-03 Thread Rick N6CY

Jim, I've been on travel so apologize for the delayed reply. All I can say is
WOW...I thought I was the only one who had this symptom with the K3! I have
a similar setup with a Heil boom-mic going through a DX Doubler SO2R switch
box, and had horrible SSB distortion on bands above 14 MHz and power levels
above about 12 watts (the point where the PA kicks in). I unplugged and
replugged cables and changed orientation; somehow eliminating the
distortion, but never really found a "smoking gun" or understood the
distortion mechanism. The thing that was killing me was that the K3 simply
replaced an IC756ProII in the same spot and I had not previously experienced
such transmit distortion. Several calls and emails to K3 support had me
check the power supply. However the only conclusion we could come to over
time was some kind of a weird ground loop.

Other posts seem to be right on target. RF on the mic "shield" line isn't
being taken to true ground...and it's finding it's way into the microphone
amplifier. Thanks to you smart guys out there, and for Elecraft, how about a
design review?

RE: [Elecraft] What I REALLY already have

2008-11-03 Thread W7TMT

What I REALLY already have are four modern HF transceivers. One each from
Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu and Elecraft and at the moment all are sitting here
side-by-side with a switching set-up that allows me to do instant A/B/C/D
comparisons. My first Elecraft radio is a K3. The K3 is simply the best
radio I have ever owned. Am I a zealot? No, as I just said this is the first
Elecraft product I have ever owned and I've had it for just two weeks. Can
it get better? Yes it can.

Perhaps what is most important is whether I have ever been offered the
opportunity to chat with the designers/builders of the other radios as I did
with Wayne in the last couple of days over an obscure feature I'd like to
see (or any other feature/issue as far as that goes)? No never. Do any of
them have an email list (which appears to be totally un-moderated) that THEY
the manufacturer sponsors and supports so that I can provide my feedback and
perhaps influence their direction or air my complaints. No never. There are
other lists but they are all sponsored and run by the users not by the
vendor. All the other vendors that I have given my money to have the "you
bought it's your problem" attitude.

My 2nd favorite radio is my 1KMP Yaesu. I was fortunate to buy a late model
that Yaesu had (more or less) fixed the serious key click problems that
these radios had for TEN+ YEARS. Despite serious feedback from the Ham
community for a decade they just blew it off and only in the last two years
of production managed to install a half-hearted fix for the problem. I
should also note that the radio was only really good after I spent another
$800 dollars on roofing/IF filters from another company as the stock factory
stuff was garbage.

No doubt my operating requirements and others are not the same. However,
after nearly 50 years in the Amateur Radio Service I have never done
business with any vendor who is as quality and customer focused as Elecraft.
My very first purchase was simply the best dollars I have ever spent on
equipment in my radio experience.

Respectfully submitted with no ill will toward anyone.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 sweepstakes this weekend

2008-11-03 Thread Mark KN7T

This was my K3's (#1371) first SS as well and it was a joy to use - totals
for me were:

815 Q's
79 sections worked (missed NT)
128,000 points

I worked single op, low power. Really wish I would have had the sub-RX
available and installed for this contest - 15 meters was hopping as well.

The filtering really helped out during the extremely crowded band conditions
on 20 meters. Several times I had to reach for the width knob to dial the
filters way down - spent much of the contest with it set at or near 400 Hz,
a few times needed to go more narrow.

Hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

2008-11-03 Thread Lyle Johnson

An update on this event.

First, thank you for your overwhelming interest!

We now have 15 confirmed technical attendees, two non-technical
attendees, and two maybes.

A question came up about handicapped accessibility. My home is not
wheelchair accessible. The front steps *may* be negotiable with some
help, but my lab is upstairs, and the sanitary necessities are not
suitable for a wheelchair.

Others have asked about videotaping the sessions, or putting something
on YouTube. There are no facilities here for doing this.

We may still be able to squeeze in a few more people...

Re: [K2] [Elecraft] Excessive PSK IMD with new K2/100

2008-11-03 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

The only other thought I have is that perhaps the KPA100 PA transistors
are not operating at exactly the right point of their characteristic
curve. The only thing that will change the portion of the curve for the
PA transistors (i.e. the operating point) is the bias. The bias setting
given in the KPA100 manual is good for most applications, but that does
not say it cannot be optimized for a particular set of transistors used
in a specific application. I would suggest that you alter the bias
setting *slightly* on either side of the manual suggested setting to see
if you obtain any improvement. Good luck with your experiments.

The KPA100 can be coupling back into the KSB2 option.
Remove the right side panel and tuck the ribbon cable and speaker cable
up into the space at the top of the KPA100 instead of letting it dangle
near the KSB2 board.

I will not guarantee that it will help, but it often makes a difference
on SSB, and can also help on data modes.

[Elecraft] K3 shutdown during high SWR

2008-11-03 Thread Steve Walter WA3A

I had the chance to use a K3 during SS CW. I liked the rx and found it easy
to remove most of the QRM. Something I'm not used to! Since I usually
operate with antennas fed with open wire I have been accustomed to fine
tuning an external antenna tuner during automated CQing. The first time I
tried this the K3 shut down. I tried it again to be sure and it shut down
again. Each time I powered it back up and it came on with a different freq
and filter setting than I was using. It also shut down another time when I
wasnt adjusting SWR but cant recall the exact cicumstance other than I was
adjusting something on the RX during a CQ. I found many adjustments that
couldnt be made while transmitting. Not a big deal but some of them caused
the sidetone to disappear or be distorted. Not sure what the actual
transmitted signal was doing. I can get used to not adjusting the rx during
xmit but a shutdown is not acceptable during a contest. It seems that swr
power foldback should alleviate a shutdown. Any thoughts? This wasnt at my
station so I dont have much other information. I dont believe this is a
power supply issue as I have used other rigs at this qth with the same power
supply without incident. This K3 was using the latest firmware and is around
serial #1700. Thanks, Steve WA3A

[Elecraft] K3: Line out level in 'CONFIG:LIN OUT = PHONES' mode

2008-11-03 Thread Enno, PF5X

Hi all,

I am experimenting with recording QSOs. If I want to record my own
transmission too, I have to set CONFIG: LIN OUT =PHONES. This links the line
out level to the AF pot meter settings. However, the level is too low for a
decent recording unless I want to blow my eardrums. When in LIN OUT = NOR
mode I can set the level to 15 and I get a reasonable line out level ...

Any ideas or any plans to include a "gain factor" between AF setting and
line out level when in = PHONES mode ??

Just took it over from a friend to see, if I can improve and enhance the

I am now playing and testing with it, to see what will be the best audio

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - front panel issue

2008-11-03 Thread ab2tc

Ouch. Did you have an electrostatic event? All those buttons have one thing
in common: They are using the signal SCANADC1 which is routed to input X3 on
the HC4051 analog multiplexer chip U3 (front panel sheet 7). I hope this is
not the case, but if that input is zapped, you will have the symptoms you
see.

[Elecraft] K3 - front panel issue (update)

2008-11-03 Thread Bruce Meier
UPDATE:

I did a CPU reset (NORM / POWER ON) and the first time nothing changed. The
second time the RATE button worked once. Then no others worked, nor did the
RATE. So, I did a third RESET - and now everything is working. Before
doing the reset I saved my configuration and then reloaded it. Everything
still is working.

However - - When doing the resets at NO TIME did the EE INIT message get
displayed on the front panel.

Strange - but working.

Now.. Should I load the latest version of microcode.or wait a couple days to
see if the problem(s) come back?

I am waiting..

I just noticed that after a fun and uneventful (no failures) weekend of ARRL
SS CW one of my K3s has developed a strange symptom. I have done nothing
other than turn the K3 off last night and then on this morning.

Perhaps I pushed something by mistake, but I have no idea what that could
have been. I have turned the K3 off/on but have not yet done a CPU reset.

K3# 1193
Running: 2.46 code

The following buttons are failing and the others seem to be working fine.

Failing buttons:

Band / Mode: the right side of the buttons don't work
MODE (the up side) - down works fine
TEST - does not function
BAND (the up side) - down works fine
QSK - does not work
Other buttons:
SPOT/PITCH - no impact to either function
NR/ADJ - no impact when pushed
RATE/LOCK - neither function works
ANT - locked on Ant 1, will not select Ant 2

Anyone have any suggestions???

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K3 (RX) Handling of Key Clicks

2008-11-03 Thread Dan Atchison
As a die hard CW operator, it's difficult to imagine that after 45
years as a ham, I actually worked my first CWSS. Shame on me. I had a
blast just S&Ping on and off during the weekend.

This was the first active CW contest I've had with the K3. While early
on after receiving the K3, I had the opportunity to have it side by
side with an FT-2000, after a week of A/B comparisons the FT-2000 was
relegated to a different location and disconnected from the operating
desk. Since CWSS would be a great radio comparative genre, I returned
the FT2K back to the operating desk and next to the K3 - again for A/B
comparisons.

No need to go into real details, save one, as the K3 is the clear
winner. On receive what I really noticed far more than anything else is
the K3's handling of key-clicks. Yep, there are plenty of stations with
key-clicks, but the K3 AGC handles them SO much better than the Yaesu.
It almost appeared I could tell by the clicks who was using a K3 and
who wasn't.

From a transmit side, several stations who I know were using the K3 had
no clicks at all - including some whose signal level approached 30
over. Surely in some receivers, a signal that strong may have clicks
generated by the RX itself.

Both of these observations attest to the effectiveness, quality, and
attention to detail realized by Elecraft. Way to go!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

2008-11-03 Thread Paul Christensen

I just added a jumper around (well, actually over) my L4. No need to risk
possible PCB damage by completely removing the RFCs.

Unless the RFC begins to move under heat and begins bridging to an adjacent
pad or trace. Even when being careful, SMT/SMD parts can slightly shift on
the PCB.

Just my $0.02, but I prefer the removal of the RFC and short the pads with
0-ohm resistors, or fine magnet/buss wire. Removal of surface-mounted
components is generally easier than that of through-hole components. Also
important is that owing to packaging density, some of the pads and traces in
the K3 are extremely delicate and it does not take much lateral pressure on
some SMT/SMD components to accidentally remove a pad or trace. No matter
what style of component work-around you use, treat the pads and traces with
utmost respect..

Also, as Lyle pointed out, L4 and L7 in question are on separate PCBs (Main
DSP Board and KIO3). Anyone contemplating the mod should first familiarize
themselves with the schematics or they may be removing the wrong component
since identical component designators are used in the K3 across multiple
PCBs.

It works.

Even in balanced audio systems, the same rules apply. Had the K3
been designed with a truly balanced, 3-stage instrumentation input
for its mic pre-amp, the inclusion of L4 and L7 on the shielded
return paths would have the same effect. The saving grace in an
instrumentation-input circuit (or in the alternative, an audio
transformer input) is the inherently large common-mode rejection
ratio (CMRR) across a very broad frequency span that limits the
presence of RF on a twisted-pair audio line, even in the total
absence of the cable shielding. For nearly 100 years, the Bell
System and its progeny have used unshielded twisted-pair balanced
audio systems in the presence of outrageously-high RF fields with
no measurable detriment to performance in many instances.

[Elecraft] Please Post KRX3 Arrival Dates!

2008-11-03 Thread Jeff Maass

Please continue to post when your backordered KRX3 (2nd receiver) arrives,
along with your
order date and/or K3 serial number associated with the order!

I was hoping to have the KRX3 in my K3 (#1152, ordered 2/7/08) in time to take
it with me
for use at PJ2T for the CQWW CW Contest, but as best I can guess, I'm still a
month or two
away from having my KRX3.

RE: [Elecraft] SS... aka - More Fun

2008-11-03 Thread Dale Putnam

HI Tim,
Yep, having fun, you bettcha. But with the bands like they are... I've found
it takes a whole lot of improvements on my antennnas to make it work. But the
one thing that I am convinced now of.. is the magic of the Elecraft Rx. I envy
your K3, I'll get one, one day.
But for now, the K2 is doing right nice for itself. And... the funny thing is,
I did a switch, side by side, compare, and all the work that I did on the 761,
has finally been proven to be behind the curve, now. It will be going on the
market soon. Hope to make a bit of starter for the K3, you see.
Never heard ND, or DE.. that was the odd ones out for the WAS, maybe during
the Fox hunts coming up But getting that close is pretty awesome for the
K2.
What fun, see you in the next tests too!--... ...--Dale - WC7S in Wy

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

2008-11-03 Thread Monty Shultes

Lyle -

Thanks for the correction. I saw the description on the schematic and
thought I was doing the right thing. Back in L7 goes, and I will look for
L7 on the KIO3 board.

Monty

I bit the bullet and removed L4 and L7 this morning. It is not
difficult; they are both on the back of the front panel board.

L4 on the front panel board is related to the issues some folks are having
when using the front panel mic connector with various audio routers. It
can be shorted with a jumper from pin 8 of the mic jack to ground.

L7 on the KIO3 audio I/O board can also be bypassed for the same reasons
when using the rear panel mic jack in similar installations.

L7 on the front panel board is for reduction of noise from the RS232
serial port lines and should definitely not be bypassed!

Big thanks to Joe Subich for his help with the moving average code.
