There are several good articles for solar chargers and solar charge controllers
in the QST archives that you can access from the ARRL web page. (If your a

I suggest that you make sure that you have run the "Calibrate
Transmitter gain " in the configuration section of the Elecraft K3
Utility. That fixed an issue I had that was similar to yours.

I have this problem also, not only after power up, but after each band
change. My favorite workaround is to change mode to data FSK, switch to
dummy load, then press PTT for a couple of seconds. Back to SSB and I have
full talk power immediately.

[Elecraft] MCU LD and K3 Utility

2009-07-10 Thread Peter Chamalian
Things are really balled up. I tried to upload the latest firmware but as I
was checking to see which serial port was connected to the computer, the K3
Utility blew up and in spite of my best efforts to uninstall and reinstall,
when I launch it, it tried to connect to the K3 on a port that doesn't exist
and just hangs and crashes. I've rebooted, looked for a .ini file that
might be referenced for that bogus port, but I can't find it.

This is on a windows machine running XP with all the latest updates.

Of course, the K3 is hung up in MCU LD mode and since I can't talk to it,
just sits there. I've powered down for an hour or more and tried but to no
avail.

I am hoping to be active in IARU so this is the last thing I need right now.

HELP Please!

Re: [Elecraft] EEEEHAAAAaaa!! CQWWDX WoW!

2009-07-10 Thread Bob Nielsen
Enter the contests and you might just be surprised. Sometimes a
category (QRP, single-band, etc.) won't have a lot of competition (or
even any!) and I've picked up a lot of unexpected wallpaper that
way. My very first contest (1953 WWDX, CQ didn't sponsor it that
year) resulted in a certificate with less than 700 points and I have
some with even lower totals.

Besides contests are a good opportunity to make a bunch of contacts,
even when the solar activity is lacking.

The Quadra is designed to use the Exciter 1 RF input with
Band Data 1 (the DIN8/262 jack) and the Exciter 2 RF input
with Band Data 2 (the DB15). The schematic shows that to
be the case as well. The only issue that prevents using
the Quadra with two exciters and automatic band switching
is that the TF outputs activate for both exciters at the
same time.

The TF Set issue appears to be a late in the game change
(the relay that would have switched the TF signal was used
to switch a resistor to ground vs. contact closure to
ground in order to support the remote tune function on
the FT-1000MP. In addition the second TF (tune) outputs
was used for the switched resistor instead of the second
exciter output. The ground vs. resistor issue is also
the reason that the TF output needs to be changed for use
with the FT-2000/FT-9000 since the remote (keypad) tune
function was abandoned in those rigs in favor of a separate
dry contact input.

> I do not remember where I saw this mod posted or by who.

The K2ESE modification adds an external relay to restore
the missing TF switching function. It is available at
mods.dk as well as the files area of the YAESUQUADRA
group on Yahoo. The mod is only necessary in order to
use the TF function with two exciters and the Quadra.

Hi Pete,

I was waiting to see if K6KR or someone more knowledgeable than I was around,
but I guess
not, so here goes.

Run REGEDIT. Look for

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elecraft\K3 Utility

That's where the port (and other) information is kept.

I hope this helps.

[Elecraft] K2 Portable Question

2009-07-10 Thread Eric

My elaborate Field Day plans fell through and I took my K2 to a local park.
With a wire thrown in a tree, the same wire I use with my KX1 and cut to about
26 feet, I worked AL and AB among others with 8 watts and had a blast! My
question is this: the kat2 did not seem to tune the wire to as low an swr as
the KX1 gets, even in ALT mode. Is there a different length wire preferred for
the K2, or another trick? SWR was never below 2, whereas KX1 gets close to
1.4. Two 16 ft radials used. Bands were 20 and 40m Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] slightly OT: need reference for solar charging system for 18AH battery

2009-07-10 Thread Julius Fazekas n2wn

Hi Allan,

There are several options. Check the QST archives for some of them.

This kit, from an article in QST, is pretty popular:
http://www.theheathkitshop.com/page24/page24.html

Also check an article bt AA4PB entitled "An Automatic Sealed-Lead-Acid
Battery Charger" from 2001.

If you're using the internal KBAT2, you should only need a simple blocking
diode circuit from the panel (that's making several assumptions on my part)
to keep it charged.

Someone on here, a 5lander, also had a kit for solar panels a few years
back.

Happy rafting!

Julius

Hi Larry,

You can interface the K3 with the Quadra via the procedure described here:

http://www.ab4oj.com/quadra/interface.html

The page describes the interface to an Icom exciter, but will work with the
K3. Connect Quadra Band Data 2 Pins 9 and 11 to K3 ACC Pins 5 (Ground) and 4
(PTT IN) respectively.

The K3 must be equipped (or modified) for negative-going ALC. Correct
connection and adjustment of the ALC loop is absolutely mandatory when
driving the Quadra, to prevent overdrive and to ensure proper operation of
the amplifier's protective subsystem.

As described on the page, band selection and tuning are semi-automatic. For
automatic band tracking, the K3 band-selection data (K3 user manual, p. 16)
appears to be identical to the Yaesu data, so you should be able to connect
the band-selection lines as follows:

K3 ACC Pin 13 (BAND0 OUT) to Quadra Band Data 2 Pin 4 (D0)

K3 ACC Pin 3 (BAND1 OUT) to Quadra Band Data 2 Pin 5 (D1)

K3 ACC Pin 9 (BAND2 OUT) to Quadra Band Data 2 Pin 6 (D2)

K3 ACC Pin 14 (BAND3 OUT) to Quadra Band Data 2 Pin 7 (D3)

Quadra Band Data 2 is a DB15 socket.

See also: http://www.ab4oj.com/quadra/interface_mp.html

Hope this helps.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Anyone driving a Yaesu VL-1000 (Quadra) with a K3?
Wonder if there is an interface available to drive the AMP for Band
Selection.

Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] Solar charge system

2009-07-10 Thread Randy Cook
In the Elecraft spirit of building things, consider the Micro M+ PV
controller in the ARRL Handbook (at least the 2007 edition). The
blank PC board, as well as full kits are available. The 2007 Handbook
lists www.selogic.com as the source for the boards and kits. I built
one from the PC board and use it with a small solar cell array to
charge 7.4aH gel cells. It can also be used as a charger from an
power supply source. So far, it seems to work fine.

2009-07-10 Thread Dick Dievendorff
If you can, would you describe "blew up" better for me (a private e-mail
would be fine). I'd like to determine what happened and fix it, if I can.

The K3 Utility retains its information, as Vic described, in the Windows
Registry. Start Regedit from the Windows start menu "run" box, and then
navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Elecraft\K3 Utility. You
may delete the entire key and all the named values, as the K3 Utility
creates this key with default values on each startup if it's not already
there. The COM port name is part of that information.

Re: [Elecraft] MCU LD and K3 Utility

2009-07-10 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Running the utility trying to access an invalid port should not cause any
problems at all, except that you won't be able to communicate with the K3.
And invalid or missing port should not cause it to hang in any way.

The first step is to load the Utility with *nothing* connected between the
PC and K3. It should run normally except that it can't "talk" to the K3, so
you won't get any report on current firmware, etc. You'll see ??? on the
Utility screen in those places.

You didn't describe your "best efforts to uninstall and reinstall" or what
computer/OS you're using, but if you're running Windows that should include
removing the program using the install/uninstall utility in the Control
Panel, then rebooting the computer *before* trying to install the new
Utility. Then, of course you download the utility program again from
Elecraft rather than trying to install a potentially-corrupted version
already on your HD.

I may not have the latest K3 Utility, but the version I have and all the
earlier ones offered a way to choose the port from the screens. Click on the
PORT tab. If a list of ports isn't shown in the drop-down window, click
REFRESH PORT LIST.

Normally, if you're not sure which port works, you'd first be sure you have
the K3 connected to the PC and turned on, then click on TEST COMMUNICATIONS.
If that fails then you'd try a different port.

In your case, the K3 is "hung" so it may not respond to a TEST
COMMUNICATIONS query. In that case you need to "force" an MCU load as
described on page of the Owner's Manual (Rev D). Since you don't know which
port is correct, you may need to do that trying different ports until it
works.

Hi Pete,

I was waiting to see if K6KR or someone more knowledgeable than I was
around, but I guess
not, so here goes.

Run REGEDIT. Look for

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elecraft\K3 Utility

That's where the port (and other) information is kept.

I hope this helps.

Congrats Burke!

I've hostled just about every sort of radio on solid ground, on the sea or
in the air from the big Gates and Harris broadcast transmitters on down in
size and complexity to my little one-transistor xtal oscillators.

The exotic 'state of the art' stuff can be extremely interesting and a
satisfying challenge to fire up, whether it's on the Ham bands or in a
commercial installation, but for guys like me the simpler the rig the bigger
the emotional charge I get from making it work.

It's another example of the simpler life being the more satisfying life.

Sounds like you're of a like mind.

Keep it up and have fun. I've often worked KS QRP. Maybe we'll hook up some

The only beep-beeping I've come across has been laptop PCs left on standby
warning that their batteries are about to run down. I think some mobile
phones and VHF hand-helds might do that too.

It's very hard to determine where an infrequent beeping sound is coming
from. My wife and I were once woken in the night and spent about an hour
searching for the source of a regular but infrequent beep, which turned out
to be the (mains powered) smoke alarm telling us that the backup batteries
(which I didn't even know existed, and which were 6 years old) were about to
die.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 double beep when not connected

2009-07-10 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Yes, tell me about it, I have one of those S/Ds too (I actually have
two and they are linked)!

I had the double-beep 3 times in succession this morning, over a
period of about 5 mins, but not regular, so still couldn't figure out
where it's coming from.

It's not the phone, not the 4 Puxing Hand-helds (which are chared) or
the VX-7rs, which have never done that and are on chare too.

That leaves a Compaq which is on charge and hasn't done that before, a
eeePC, likewise on charge, but in standby mode, don't think it's that.

Lastly it leaves the K3.

I'm going to spread some of this kit around the house in an attempt to
find it.

[Elecraft] [OT] VOAProp hangs when off the net

2009-07-10 Thread Carl Clawson
I love VOAProp, but when I'm portable and away from the Internet I can't get
it to work. Even if I uncheck Auto Update it will start up, display the
current band's propagation map, then go comatose with the message "Checking
for current solar data update..." and never wake up.

If I'm quick, I can almost manage to hit another band's tab and enter the
current time to get a map before it hangs.

Any workarounds/fixes?

Thanks, 73,
Carl WS7L

[Elecraft] K3 XFIL Presets

2009-07-10 Thread AC6JA
Is there a way to change the XFIL presets? On CW, mine are set at 2.8,
1.0, and 0.40. I see in the menu you set the bandwidth for each filter as to
where you want the roofing filters to switch in, but I was just wondering
if you can set your favorite 3 bandwidths without having to use the WIDTH
control.
Sorry if this has already been answered

[Elecraft] K3 double beep when not connected

2009-07-10 Thread K2MK
Hi Dave:

Don't rule out the dishwasher if you're lucky enough to have one. When we
moved into our new home it took us weeks to track down a beeping that
occurred after we went to bed. I changed all the smoke detector batteries,
contacted the alarm company to check the trouble log, turned off both of our
computers before bed, and finally accidentally discovered it to be the new
GE dishwasher. It beeps at the end of its cycle.

Due to other commitments, I've had my K3 disconnected from everything
and sitting in it's case for a few weeks now :-(.
I notice every now and then, it gives a double beep. Don't recall
seeing this described in the manual, can anyone explain what this
means - other than it reminding me I should be using it!

Of course, as soon as I post the question I think of something else to try
and got it:

Go into voaprop.ini and change "Solar Data URL" to some nonsense thing. Just
deleting it won't work. I wrote:

[Solar]
Solar Data URL=junk

And now it runs fine. Instead of waiting forever it fails straight away
trying to update the solar info.

73 and thanks for listening,
Carl
