It's quite likely that the cheapest way for Elecraft to implement such a
product would result in its running Windows, albeit XP embedded, on
flash. The next alternative would be Linux.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Tune Up of ALS-600

2009-07-24 Thread Phil Debbie Salas
When you set the ALC on CW, this also sets the ALC for your peak SSB power.
And you're right - you should adjust the ALC so it just comes on with the
drive necessary to get your desired output.

That being said, I don't use ALC. My ALS-600 needs about 65 watts to drive
it to full output. Rather than mess with adjusting the drive and/or
connecting up ALC, I place a relay-switched 2dB attenuator in-line with the
amplifier. The attenuator automatically goes in-line when I turn on the
amplifier so I can just leave my K3 set for 100 watts all the time. The
attenuator is inexpensive and easy to make, and works great. Any full power
transmit spikes related to a transceiver's ALC not acting fast enough on the
first dit or speech peak will obviously not be there as the transceiver
output is already at full power. This attenuator is described in the
Articles section of my website at ww.ad5x.com.

[Elecraft] EPan and CW Skimmer

2009-07-24 Thread wa9vee
Ya know, even with the LPPAN SDR display up, my eyes are always on CWSkimmer
anyway instead of the scope display. So if the EPan is stand alone, that's fine
with me.

Now if the K3 could just tell CWSkimmer what the IF shift is when changing
roofing filters, and CWSkimmer would enhance their software to react to that
change, things would be great. Even better, maybe the EPan unit will somehow
make that information available. As it is, point and click in CWSkimmer doesn't
work if the roofing filter changes.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 - No TX

2009-07-24 Thread djmd

Just wanted to update anyone on here who might have been curious. I believe I
found the intermittant. In the process of doing the tranmitter signal
tracing I found that the problem appeared to be between the pre-driver
output and the driver input. With the RF probe I was seeing 6v (!) on the
case of Q5 (should have been less than a quarter vrms) and only about 3mv on
the base of Q6. So I reheated and added a smidgen of solder to those
components, as well as T1 and C121. It seems to work consistently now.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 - No TX

2009-07-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
From those measurements, you definitely had a problem between Q5 and
Q6. Congratulations on finding it.

The much higher than expected RF Voltages seems to mystify some builders
- that is *not* a problem nor should it be cause for any alarm, but is
normal behavior for the K2 power control circuits. When there is no (or
lower than requested) power output, the K2 increases the drive in an
attempt to generate more power.

The result is that the RF voltage in the *working* stages will increase
above the normal (expected) value - when you progress just beyond the
failing point, the RF Voltage will drop substantially below the expected
value - that should tell you that you just passed the failure point. It
makes troubleshooting by transmit signal tracing a relatively easy task.

In addition, a less complex/less expensive L-pad may be used

You might look at the Softrock 40 small board. Great capability. It does
have some SMT surface mount chips on it. I am sure you can get some help
with them if you need to like I did for the first time. Small, cheap (was
$10 in the beginning). It is a receiver or a single band or another kit I
think has up to 4 bands and it sends data to the PC and decodes CW and audio
SSB and even psk I think. The display looks like a spectrum scope and you
click and it decodes or you hear the ssb audio. Neat. The K3 version (vs
40, 20 , 15, 10 meter versiond) can also be used as a spectrum display for
the K3 I am told.

I can relate to that. A few weeks ago I had a complicated spinal
procedure performed. Recovery is a slow process and the outcome will
not be clear for a few more weeks. Last weekend the proper solution to
my post-operative doldrums solidified in my head and I quickly ordered a

build, it is well suited to the brain being slowed by the powerful pain
control needed to otherwise maintain one's sanity.

This morning I have cleared space on my desk and just now begin the
assembly of K3 #3294. My last K3 was #77. It will be interesting to
see what has changed some 3200+ units later.

[Elecraft] K3 160M Diversity Users

2009-07-24 Thread Michael M. Raskin
I am about to order filters for the K3 and need some final advice. I have
the capability for diversity reception on 160 and 80 and am wondering what
is the best filter pair to use for CW. Price really doesn't enter into the
equation as a pair of matched 5-poles filters are about the same price as a
pair of 8-pole filters. What are your recommendation if I were to get only
one pair of filters? Is there any real value to getting a pair of narrow
(200Hz or 250Hz) filters as well as a pair of the wider (400Hz or 500Hz) CW
filters, or am I just wasting money? Is there a noticeable difference
between the 5-pole and 8-pole filters? I would appreciate hearing from
someone who has already gone through this and it would save me a lot of
mental anguish!

[Elecraft] KAT2 update

2009-07-24 Thread Tom Campie
Hey guys, another update on my tuner troubles. We pulled out the TL072 we'd
put in place of U4 and checked the voltages through the RF bridge and
found everything to be good so the problems I've been having have been in
U4. For those who I may have not told, it turns out the first device I put
in for U4 was actually another EEPROM - I hadn't checked the part since I
was finishing a build and the only 2 parts left were the MCU and this other
8 pin DIP. I replaced it with a TL072 which obviously doesn't work since it
is designed for dual rails.
Long story short, I need an LM358 to replace it. Does anybody have an extra
one they could send me?

Thanks, Tom

PS I didn't buy my kit from Elecraft so they want to charge me for a part
and shipping

[Elecraft] New K1 on the way - Band Module Questions

2009-07-24 Thread Gary W. Marklund
I should receive my new K1-2 with KAT1 tomorrow or Monday. I ordered
40M and 30M for starters. I will add others shortly. My question is
regarding modification for other bands. I've seen replacement parts
lists for 12 and 10 M. Is there any reason the KFL1-4 is limited to
40/30/20 and 17 or 15? What if I wanted to build a four band module as
say, 30/17/12/10 meters? Is there something inherent in the KFL1-4 that
prevents this?

Thanks,
Gary

[Elecraft] Li-ion battery pack for KBT2, K2

2009-07-24 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Group,

Rechargable Li-ion 3.7v cells are now very cheap ($4 for a 1,500maH cell) and
easily available in Hong Kong.   I am thinking to use them to replace the Lead
Acid cell of the KBT2.  This will make the K2 less heavy and give more battery
power for longer operation time.  K2 will then be more suitable for field day.

Are there any articles in this forum covering this issue before? Or, where can
I find the necessary information for such an installation?

Thanks and 73,

Johnny Siu VR2XMC

Re: [Elecraft] New K1 on the way - Band Module Questions

2009-07-24 Thread Sandy
The 4 band board can be only used on 40/30/20 and 17 OR 15 meters. That's
the way it's designed and your only option is whether the topmost band will
be 17 or 15 meters.

two band boards can be built for anything from 160 thru 15 meters. 160 is
not a standard Elecraft stock band, but all the parts can be obtained from
Elecraft except the crystal!

Eventually someone will come up with the parts required for 12 and 10 meters
I'm sure when they bands get usable again.

You will have a lot of fun with that rig and it's the best QRP rig I've ever
owned...so far.

Re: [Elecraft] New K1 on the way - Band Module Questions

2009-07-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gary,

The 4 band board cannot be modified much. The lower two bands must
share the same low pass filter, so you are limited to 40 and 30. A low
pass filter that would pass a 17 meter signal would be too close to the
second harmonic of 30 meters to effectively reduce that 2nd harmonic.
The K1, like all other transmitters must meet the FCC requirements for
harmonic radiation.

Re: [Elecraft] Need a kit recomendation (off topic a little)

2009-07-24 Thread John H Gibson
Hi Alan,

Please consider MFJ's 8100K regenerative receiver kit. It provides reasonable
shortwave performance, and its regeneration control can be adjusted for ssb
and cw reception. The radio's open layout makes it a good kit for beginners,
and the $80 price includes a nice case. The kit assembly even requires the
winding of one toroid.

I used to teach an Introduction to Radio course for liberal arts students,
most
of whom had never before seen a soldering iron. They had a ball building these
radios, and the few radios that did not work when first turned on were easy to
troubleshoot.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 160M Diversity Users

2009-07-24 Thread Bill W4ZV

W4UM wrote:

What are your recommendation if I were to get only
one pair of filters?

I would go with either the 500 or 400 8-poles.

Is there any real value to getting a pair of narrow
(200Hz or 250Hz) filters as well as a pair of the wider (400Hz or 500Hz) CW
filters, or am I just wasting money?

I have a 200 Hz in my Main in addition to 500 Hz 8-poles in Main and Sub.
If you contest or are in huge simplex pileups, there are definitely times
when the 200 Hz may be useful. For some reason I don't understand, I have
no offset warbling when setting WIDTH to 200 (which enables the 200 Hz in
Main and 500 Hz in Sub). Most of the time when listening to weak signals, I
use 350-500 Hz WIDTH so a pair of 500 Hz filters is fine excluding the
extreme cases of simplex pileups or a strong station nearby (e.g. the CQ 160
CW contest).

Is there a noticeable difference between the 5-pole and 8-pole filters?

I used 5-pole 500s in my first K3 and have not noticed a significant
difference with the 8-poles, but I've not compared them simultaneously. As
you stated, there's little cost difference (after the matching charge) so I
went with the 8-pole 500 Hz when it became available. I personally prefer a
slightly wider BW than the 400 Hz allows but that's another option some
choose.

You'll love diversity on 160 and 80, especially if you have good RX
antennas. I use my TX antenna (similar to a 4-square) in one RX and
Beverages in the other, and I use diversity 99% of the time on the low
bands. I would never own any rig without diversity now that I've used it.

Just a gentle suggestion from a non-K3 guy.

A while back it was brought up that we'd place the model # of the rig being
discussed in the subject line of our posts, when applicable.

Like, K3 when we were talking about that rig, or K1, etc. Threads of
general interest would not have any specific identifier.

The purpose was so that people not interested in the thread about a given
model # could filter it out.

I fully understand that another way to avoid this problem is to buy ALL of
the Elecraft rigs so we'd have an interest in everything, but some of us
haven't had taken that route (Yet :) ). So I'd respectfully request that
we go back to that protocol as some have continued.

Lowly K2, Tom??

For me the jury's still out: my nice analog K2 or the very flexible and
feature-rich digital K3.

I'll probably never decide, just as I won't bother to decide whether 80 or
40 meters is a better band. They're just different, that's all. They do
different things better.

As for your suggestion, good point. From the e-mail reflector guidelines on
the Elecraft web site:

4b. When emailing about a specific rig or option, please add the rig/option
name(s) to the first part of your email subject line. (K1, K2, K3,
KX1 etc.) This will be a huge help for those experiencing email overload and
will allow automatic filtering based on subject line.

Examples:

Subject: [KX1] How to use ped portable?
Subject: [XG2] Wow! Its a big help.

Re: [Elecraft] New K1 on the way - Band Module Questions

2009-07-24 Thread Rick Dettinger
I am not sure if you are planning to change the two band modules often
but if you are, I think it would be better to use an external tuner
like the T1 rather than the optional internal tuner. It makes module
swapping much easier.
The K1 wasn't really designed for frequent module changes and its not
just a matter of plugging a new one in, like with the Sierra. If you
have the internal tuner installed, it needs to be removed to change
band modules. I have often thought that if one could get along
without the internal batteries, the speaker and the tuner, that there
would be room for more bands on a larger board or multiple boards.
But this would require switching changes to the firmware. Not
something for mere mortals to play around with. Enjoy your new K1. I
sure like mine.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 160M Diversity Users

2009-07-24 Thread Gary Hinson
I am about to order filters for the K3 and need some final
 advice.

Hi Mike.

I have a pair of 400Hz and a pair of 250Hz 8 poles in my K3. I'm
pretty active, 99% CW, and rarely use the 400Hz (maybe once a day) and
very rarely the 250Hz (once a week). The DSP works extremely well.
So of these, I'd recommend the 400Hz, and save up for the 250's later
if you decide you need even narrower bandwidth than the 400+DSP can
achieve.

The 8 poles probably have a better shape factor than the 5 poles,
judging by my experience comparing the 5 pole stock Kenwood filters
with the 8 pole IRC replacements in my old TS850. With the DSP, I'm
not sure you'd notice the difference but as you see I went for the
better filters and don't regret it.

On extremely rare occasions (e.g. fishing out CW callers in SSB QRM
from Indonesian pirates) I have wound the filters right down to the
minimum 50Hz and even at that ridiculously narrow setting, the K3 is a
joy to copy with no appreciable ringing - miles better than the TS850
and indeed any other rig I've tried.

I also use diversity with a 30m fullwave loop. Works great!

I'm thinking of getting the AM and/or FM filters next so I can open up
the bandwidth to listen to a whole chunk of band at once using an AF
spectrum program: it sometimes helps to listen to all the callers in a
pileup and to choose a clear slot to call.
