Solar power works great and now with the 30% tax incentive you have a real
decent pay back.

Absolutely nothing personal Ed, but even living here in
sunny Tucson where there is a constant drone from the greenies to go
solar and lots of self-congratulatory back patting from those who do, the
“economic payback” accrues to those who buy the systems with somebody else's
(tax) money.

I wish those who think solar is the ticket for them would
pay for the systems themselves, then we could see how viable this stuff really
is.

I repeat, nothing personal, just a pet peeve.
Regards,
Wes

[Elecraft] K3 Mode

I was playing with HRD this afternoon and when swapping bands I ended up on

I've been trying to get it on USB again but I'm missing something I guess

Where can set the proper mode again?

Problem solved. I think the LSB mode is somewhere disabled for 14 Mc.

By toggling the mode (up) I didn't get the USB Mode. (For some unknown
reason I'm always toggling up until I get what I want).

By toggling down I did get back the USB mode.

Evert,

You inadvertently switched to USB. The way to do it by intent is to
hold ALT (yes, the MODE down button (you must have tapped for longer
than a tap).

Only one of the sidebands is shown for any one band - same way for CW
and DATA modes - if you want to change to the opposite sideband, hold
ALT - the K3 remembers that setting per band, per VFO.

I got 2 months ago a fully loaded K2 in very clean condition and even it was

enough power on cw on other bands, the RX was quite as my K3.
So,I called Elecraft to ask if they could realign it for me,they said to me on

alignment job on my radio was Don,so with that excellent reference certainly
after contact him I shiped my K2.
The radio arrived yesterday and If I was happy before with it, now I am way
happier,it receives quiter, better audio quality than before and the TX audio is
super, the radio changed completely after his good alignment work, the turnaround
delay was just 11 days in the whole process, radio spent more  time travelling
than at his bench,he even sent me a detailed sheet with all the work done in my

Guys I have to tell you that this is a profesional service and he deserve my

[Elecraft] [K3] Solar Power

2009-09-13 Thread Ken Kopp
We have 440 AH of 6V golf cart batteries in our RV. Don't know
what they weigh ... don't care. (:-)

Pretty normal for a solar powered RV. We have no other power
source. They power the K3, lights, vent fans, furnace blower, etc.
and deliver 120 VAC @ 1500 W via a Trace inverter if needed.
The inverter wants 90A from the batteries when delivering 1000 W.

There's also a 12V DC @ 25A from a windmill when we're parked
where there's wind.

Re: [Elecraft] Need KAT2 Help

2009-09-13 Thread KG3VTomZ
Don,

Thanks again for the help. I think this is working and I will move ahead. I
just need to install my new KNB2 and I should be ready to get the rig back
in the operating position.

I do not have a major gripe with the KAT-2 directions, but it could use an
update. I have a fair amount of building experience at this point, and I
found myself in 2 or 3 uncertain situations. But the end result is fine, as
with all my other Elecraft builds so far. I continue to be very impressed
with the design of the K2 and accessories.

 Tom,

Yes, the balance point is very 'touchy' - such is the situation anytime
you are trying to get a null (on any kind of equipment - the null range
is very small, and ideally is a single point). On the KAT2, the normal
lowest reading on the display is in the 009 to 011 range as you have
found - from that I would say all is well.

Yes, the Elecraft K2 option manuals do not have as much detailed
supplemental information as the K2 manual because the builder would
normally have already experienced the details in the K2 manual. That was
true initially, but now many K2 are being purchased used and the new
owner adds options without having that initial K2 building experience.

As far as removing stuff that was not there, the manual must be written
to cover any possible K2 configuration - thus, it is important to observe
all the If statements - if you do not have a particular option
installed, you will have nothing to remove.

 kg3vt...@gmail.com wrote:

Thanks to both of you for the sugestions. I actually got this to work,
and I am not sure if it originally worked, or if my resoldering fixed a
problem. I was able to obtain a voltage reading but only over about 20
degrees of the rotation of C55. I had no idea it would be this touchy.
Also, the lowest I can get is about 009-011 on the reading. If this
sounds normal, I may be OK. If not, I may still want to do some more
checking/debugging. The ATU does now appear to be working.

In general, I found the KAT2 instructions were not quite up to th elevel
of excellance of the other K2 components I have assembled. A couple small
things like telling you that R6 was nt yet installed at the end of board
assembly would have helped. Also, I was told to remove some stuff that
was not there, and told to add some stuff that was already there (of
course the later made me happy).

As always, thanks for the help.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for September 13th 14th, 2009

2009-09-13 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Twenty meters had QSB on most callers though it was productive and fair to
most locations. Weather reports were cooling off from what they had been last
week. I even got a report of rain in California! There were sprinkles up here
but not enough to prevent walking outside without a hat. I did lose one caller
at the end of the first net. QSB was so bad it was hard to copy any letter
sent. Each time I tried to copy the callsign it was different. The best idea
I have for the call is WB0TH but I also copied NB0OP along with a few
variations on each. Hopefully conditions will be better soon so I can work
that operator.
During my walks lately I have had to watch out for the orb spiders' webs. A
week ago they were nowhere to be seen. This week they are everywhere I walk.
Is this another sign of autumn? I only saw one foxglove blossom during my
explorations. Makes me itchy to get all of my wood back to the house. I know
winter won't be here for a couple months but heating season is upon me. I know
I will have to cut three or four more cords but that will be for after January
and into spring. I have more than enough good wood for the depths of winter
but much of it is still a long way from the house.

On to the lists =

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2300z:
W6ZH - Pete - CA - K3 - 657
K1THP - Dave - CT - K3 - 686
KL7CW - Rick - AK - KX1 - 798

WB5BKL - Nick - TX - K3 - 231QNI # 30!!!
AB9V - Mike - IN - K3 - 398
N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866

  On 7045.5 kHz at 0100z:
N0TA - John - CO - K3 - 994* QNI # 100 *
AB9V - Mike - IN - K3 - 398
K1THP - Dave - CT - K3 - 686
W6ZH - Pete - CA - K3 - 657
W8OV - Dave - TX - K3 - 3139

W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457 ** QNI # 295 **
K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183
K9PX - Jim - IN - K3 - 3334
N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866

If there are any errors in the lists please send me the corrections via
email. I would like to know who was calling after I closed the twenty meter
net but due the heavy QSB I could not copy much. Oh well, next week the
propagation will be different. It may even be better because the sun is
setting sooner. Daylight savings time will not change for quite a while so the
twenty meter net will be effected by the sun angle even out here. I hope it
makes life better because I am not holding my breath for any sunspots to
appear. With the way it has been acting lately I would turn quite blue!
   Until next week stay well,
  73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

Re: [Elecraft] KATU3 Beeps

2009-09-13 Thread Rob May

My switch tones are off and I don't get beeps any other time, but I guess it
doesn't disable the ATU tuning beeps. Lyle was able to tell me how to turn it
down.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - CW Paddle input failure

2009-09-13 Thread w4sec
Blazing ahead, I found that RFC3 (100uh choke on the dot input) has opened
up. besides infant part failure, I don't know what could have caused that -
Unless it was my blazing cw speed on the last contest that was more than it
could handle ;)!! Or perhaps they designed in a LID fuse!! Anyway, I guess I
need to order me a single 100uh SMD choke.
thanks for the replies.

Pete
