Re: [Elecraft] Speaker on/off

2009-10-30 Thread Ed Muns
No macro is needed for single functions like this that already have a menu
entry. Just go into the menu and find SPKR + PH, then tap or hold the
programmable function button of your choice (PF1, PF2 or the memory
buttons). Each time you tap the button, the speakers toggles on/off.

Here is a copy of a posting I made on 20090312:

Earlier today, I remarked that one of my K3's was running
warm in the NAQP RTTY after an extended number of RTTY CQ's.
Tonight I did a little experiment - key down at 100 watts
for four minutes while noting PA Temp and fan speed. It
turns out that there really is no problem. Both K3's behaved
identically and both leveled off at PA Temp = 64C after
about 3 minutes. For the record, here are the results (best
viewed with Courier font):

Time Temp Fan
0:0026C 0
0:26371
0:44412
1:19503
1:45554
2:40604
2:50624
3:15644
4:00644

Room temp was 77F.

According to the manual, the PA is set to drop into bypass at
84C, so it didn't even come close.

That would be a waste of a macro, though, unless you combine it with
some other action - you can just assigned that menu item to a PF
button - no macro needed, and it'll work as a toggle.

Is there a way to (programatically) change them back to whatever the

The programmer's reference is your friend!

MN097; is SPKR+PH.

You can send UP or DN to toggle the setting.

So your macro to change from SPKR+PH from yes to no or no to yes might be
"MN097;UP;MN255;"

I don't think there's a command to just turn off the speakers. I could be
mistaken...

The MUTE AF macro will turn the AF gain to zero on main and sub...

Agreed. SpectraVue/SDR-IQ and K3 operate seamlessly.
Except for a couple software packages that poll excessively,
it is quite easy to share the serial connection to K3 for a

2009-10-30 Thread Bert Craig
Congratulations, Eric!

I am very happy to see a company manufacturing an amateur radio right here
in the USA flourish and am damn proud to have been a small part of that
success with my patronage.

The only rigs currently in my shack are Elecraft (K1 & K2/100) and Ten-Tec.
(Jupiter & Argo V) The tuners are LDG & Palstar and the keys are Bencher &
Vibroplex. An Astron powers my "patriotic" setup. Oh yeah, I have a Patcomm
PC-500 made right here on Long Island. (Sadly, they are no more.)

Having come from "corporate," I've watched entire IT departments outsourced
offshore. I've only three words for that... "Tantamout to treason!"

Again congarts to you all at Elecraft and please keep up the GREAT work! On
a funny note, your new facility reminds me of Innotech from the movie,
'Office Space.' Anyone who has worked for a corporate IT dept. will probably
identify. I can honestly say I know every single charachter in that movie.

As always, take care es...

During the last CQWW SSB we had my K3 aside with two 756 pro III's and an
FT2000 at PI4D.

All operators agreed that it was very easy to operate the K3 and that it was
not the most handsome of the three but nobody cared. All eyes were on the
N1MM screen and the hands on the keyboard.

Excellent performance and easy to operate filters, gain and balance between
sub and main rx. No problem for the newbies either.

The only person who cares about all the menu possibilities is me. And I do
that about once per month if a new FW release comes along. Once the menu
item is set, there is very little need to change things.

[Elecraft] Elecraft moving this week; New Phone and FAX numbers

2009-10-30 Thread Eric Swartz -WA6HHQ, Elecraft
As mentioned earlier, we are moving the company to a larger facility
this week.

We now have Olivia and Madelyn in our sales group up at the new office
and our new phone numbers are now active.

Our new main phone number is: 831-763-4211
Our new Fax is : 831-763-4218

Please use these numbers form now on. The old main number will forward
for a short time, but it has a limited number of simultaneous calls it
can forward and you may get a busy response, so the new number is best,
831-763-4211.

Please give us a little extra time to respond to emails and tech
support/parts requests for the next several days.

Our sales department is 100% available for orders, email and phones.

Our tech support group will be on-line for email 100%. They
may not be available on the phone Friday while we move. Of course
the web page and order form are 100% available. Any calls or emails
we don't immediately respond to will be handled first thing next week.

We hope to be up and running full steam this Monday, Nov 2. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 high-power VHF sensor?

2009-10-30 Thread AD6XY

I agree - we will just have to wait - or modify the 200W sensors in some way
- I think the limitation is the coupler termination, getting up to 400W (UK
limit) might be possible.

Perhaps in the interim, when it arrives, I will put the meter on the radio
side - after all an amplifier has fixed gain, within limits and not over
driving the imput is as important as not overdriving the output. My W2 is
on order since Dayton, I have not heard it is ready yet and I have not
decided on the sensor yet but as I have an LP100 I have no need of another
HF sensor.

Elecraft - how about producing a sensor without the coupler - so we can
develop our own. I am sure you don't want to make one for each and every
application e.g. 23cms or 500kHz.

Gary,

Think there will always be some who will find the K3 complex coming from
another rig, and there is a learning curve (even coming from a K2). Some
just won't like it.

Judging by how many come up on the second hand market and how quickly they
sell, it doesn't seem like folks are shying away from it.

Some like to tweak every setting and in a M/M or M/S that can be an issue.

Wonder if you could save user preference settings using K3_EZ? This sounds
like something that should be easy to do in software.

Sounds like you had fun. See you in the CW event.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Uploads

2009-10-30 Thread Grant Youngman
I'm using a Keyspan USB-Serial adaptor. I have had no failures,
glitches, stops, or problems of any kind through 21 firmware updates
(Knock on wood).

Maybe it's because I'm using a Mac? :-)

That's must be a system-specific issue.

I use a USB/RS232 adapter without any problems at all with either a Toshiba
Satellite or Compaq notebook computer.

Elecraft even offers a USB/RS232 adapter for this purpose.

If you just looking to mute the receiver and not do the antenna switching at
the same time, consider keying the K3 (in TEST mode so it doesn't produce
RF) in parallel with your other transmitter.

Hello All,

Is there a way that the K3 will mute the RX Ant input while in TX mode
Or will I need to build and external circuit for this?

Also if anyone has a Homebrew circuit I would appreciate that.

For a beverage I will be putting up, I'm going with an I.C.E. receive antenna
limiter (+- .3V). Not a switch, but should keep the signal level into the K3
down. Don't have the real estate to really separate the RX/TX antennas.

Check which version of the K3 Utility you are using. If you have not updated

The "complicated" bad rap is almost surely the result of people watching this
reflector. Things like:

"Firmware beta version 5.555.001 allows the setting of macros to turn on your
coffeemaker at a user-programmed time, and to increase the rate of change of
audio
gain with knob twist."

First, it isn't mandatory to make these continuing updates, if it isn't
important to your
application(s) of the radio. Just buy it (and build it, if you got the kit)
turn it on, and
USE it!!! It's magnificent!

Second, it's amazing that the radio can be customized infinitely, if you want.

Third, it's amazing that the company continues to provide these changes and
upgrades.

Try that with your Hammarlund!

A most welcome change from all those clicking Yaesu rigs. Also from the
Flex 5000's +/-2.4 kHz spurs (~ 58 dB down on 160 which will cover even
strong DX signals like DF2PY, etc.) The quality of topband signals has
taken a definite upturn as more are adopting the K3.

Kudos to Elecraft for not making the Rise/Fall times adjustable...which
prevents folks from intentionally making their signals click (some do that
in contests with adjustable Rise/Fall rigs in order to keep their run
frequencies clear). :-(

Re: [Elecraft] Exciting Band Opening...

Don,

I was having some regrets with my purchase of the 1K filter. But was working
my second K3which on has the stock filter and a 400Hz filter during one of
the insane contest weekends a couple weeks ago and boy what a difference. It
was particularly noticeable on 40M where there were simultaneous CW, RTTY
and SSB activities occuring in the same spectrum.

For ragchewing and non-contest times, I agree with you. In congested contest
situations, the roofing filters make a heck of a difference. Almost wish I
had more slots now! ;o)

You forgot varying the filter width ;o)

Just received two certificates from CQ160, second place US SO-LP (10th
World) on CW (damn you ice storms! Congrats to WA1Z!) and 5th in the US SOLP
SSB (shoulda put the time in)

Both with K3s, not to mention 1st SOLP in ARRL160. K2 managed to get me to
2nd (with KB7Q running a very close 3rd also with a K2)

Watch what the topbanders are using... you'll see many K3s... same for
DXpeditions.

4000 K3s now? Can't be all that bad ;o)

The baud rate used for firmware uploads is determined by the firmware
utility. I think it uses 38400.

Surprisingly, slow baud rates often cause more problems with USB adapters
than fast ones.

This was suggested before in some form. It sure would be a great help

It is frustrating to get the wrong choice. I'll accept it that a

Could there be something like a toggle command that could be added at

2009-10-30 Thread Hector Padron
This K3 is not only not complicated to operate but its even more simple to use
than an IC-7800/FT-9000/ TT OrionII/FT-2000,at the last contest I set up first
my TX audio,my RX audio, and the roofer/DSP settings before it started, that was
once, then after the contest was running only knobs I used were the main VFO  to
move the freq, volumen control and sometimes RF gain to be able to lower the
front end gain to fight QRM,there was no need to set anything else,I made more
than 50 countries and more than 20 zones in the world working it for only 20
hours,If anyone can't understand how to operate a K3 then he will not be able
to operate any other modern radio,73

Hello,

I also found Doug's posting refreshing. Reading the posts on the reflector,
it's very easy to get the impression that the K3 is complex and
intidimidating to operate. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I
upgraded from the simple, "entry level" IC-718 and find that I operate the
K3 pretty much same way as that radio. I adjust the AF volume to a
comfortable level, tune around and talk into the microphone. When the going
gets tough, like in the CQWW contest, I crank the hi cut down to 2.1kHz (lo
cut stays at 0.3kHz always) and watch the 1.8kHz filter kick in.
Occasionally I need the noise blanker. This is an excellent radio which does
not need a lot of knob twiddling to perform its duty. The new macro feature
is very interesting and I have every intention of creating a few, but so far
I have just continued to operate the radio on the bands. One of these days,
but with 15m starting to come back to life, at least in contests

Desktop owners may not even need to buy a PCI board as most motherboards
already have a serial connection. All is needed is a 10-pin header to
feed the port to D-9 plug on a back plate. It often puzzles me as to
why so many people need to get a USB to serial adapter when all is
needed is a bit of simple electronics. Perhaps this is beyond many of
today's radio amateurs ;-(

Of course, if a laptop/notebook computer is being used maybe an adapter
is the only way.
