Re: [Elecraft] Speaker on/off
No macro is needed for single functions like this that already have a menu entry. Just go into the menu and find SPKR + PH, then tap or hold the programmable function button of your choice (PF1, PF2 or the memory buttons). Each time you tap the button, the speakers toggles on/off. Tonight I did a little experiment - key down at 100 watts for four minutes while noting PA Temp and fan speed. It turns out that there really is no problem. Both K3's behaved identically and both leveled off at PA Temp = 64C after about 3 minutes. For the record, here are the results (best viewed with Courier font): Time Temp Fan 0:0026C 0 0:26371 0:44412 1:19503 1:45554 2:40604 2:50624 3:15644 4:00644 Room temp was 77F. According to the manual, the PA is set to drop into bypass at 84C, so it didn't even come close. The programmer's reference is your friend! MN097; is SPKR+PH. You can send UP or DN to toggle the setting. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] CQWW SSB observations
During the last CQWW SSB we had my K3 aside with two 756 pro III's and an FT2000 at PI4D. All operators agreed that it was very easy to operate the K3 and that it was not the most handsome of the three but nobody cared. All eyes were on the N1MM screen and the hands on the keyboard. Excellent performance and easy to operate filters, gain and balance between sub and main rx. No problem for the newbies either. The only person who cares about all the menu possibilities is me. And I do that about once per month if a new FW release comes along. Once the menu item is set, there is very little need to change things. 73, Arie PA3A -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Rumor has it (second hand) that some Contesters are now shying away from the K3 due to it's complexity, but not necessarily it's performance. Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 high-power VHF sensor?
I agree - we will just have to wait - or modify the 200W sensors in some way - I think the limitation is the coupler termination, getting up to 400W (UK limit) might be possible. Perhaps in the interim, when it arrives, I will put the meter on the radio side - after all an amplifier has fixed gain, within limits and not over driving the imput is as important as not overdriving the output. My W2 is on order since Dayton, I have not heard it is ready yet and I have not decided on the sensor yet but as I have an LP100 I have no need of another HF sensor. Elecraft - how about producing a sensor without the coupler - so we can develop our own. I am sure you don't want to make one for each and every application e.g. 23cms or 500kHz. Judging by how many come up on the second hand market and how quickly they sell, it doesn't seem like folks are shying away from it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Uploads
Do not use a usb/serial adaptor with K3 Utility. Dick N6KR suggested I change to straight RS232 serial connection. That largely cured problem. I still get an occasional failure of FPF or DSP1 with RS232 serial cable but a repeat download always captures the file. Things like: "Firmware beta version 5.555.001 allows the setting of macros to turn on your coffeemaker at a user-programmed time, and to increase the rate of change of audio gain with knob twist." First, it isn't mandatory to make these continuing updates, if it isn't important to your application(s) of the radio. Just buy it (and build it, if you got the kit) turn it on, and USE it!!! It's magnificent! Second, it's amazing that the radio can be customized infinitely, if you want. Third, it's amazing that the company continues to provide these changes and upgrades. Also from the Flex 5000's +/-2.4 kHz spurs (~ 58 dB down on 160 which will cover even strong DX signals like DF2PY, etc.) The quality of topband signals has taken a definite upturn as more are adopting the K3. Kudos to Elecraft for not making the Rise/Fall times adjustable...which prevents folks from intentionally making their signals click (some do that in contests with adjustable Rise/Fall rigs in order to keep their run frequencies clear). :-( 73, Bill W4ZV -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-CQWW-SSB-Observations-R-U-kidding-tp3914434p3919268.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Exciting Band Opening...
Don, I was having some regrets with my purchase of the 1K filter. But was working my second K3which on has the stock filter and a 400Hz filter during one of the insane contest weekends a couple weeks ago and boy what a difference. It was particularly noticeable on 40M where there were simultaneous CW, RTTY and SSB activities occuring in the same spectrum. For ragchewing and non-contest times, I agree with you. In congested contest situations, the roofing filters make a heck of a difference. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - CQWW SSB Observations - R U kidding?
This K3 is not only not complicated to operate but its even more simple to use than an IC-7800/FT-9000/ TT OrionII/FT-2000,at the last contest I set up first my TX audio,my RX audio, and the roofer/DSP settings before it started, that was once, then after the contest was running only knobs I used were the main VFO to move the freq, volumen control and sometimes RF gain to be able to lower the front end gain to fight QRM,there was no need to set anything else,I made more than 50 countries and more than 20 zones in the world working it for only 20 hours,If anyone can't understand how to operate a K3 then he will not be able to operate any other modern radio,73 AD4C "For a refined ham it is compulsory to own a k3" --- On Thu, 10/29/09, ab2tc wrote: From: ab2tc Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - CQWW SSB Observations - R U kidding? To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Thursday, October 29, 2009, 7:46 PM Hello, I also found Doug's posting refreshing. Reading the posts on the reflector, it's very easy to get the impression that the K3 is complex and intidimidating to operate. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I upgraded from the simple, "entry level" IC-718 and find that I operate the K3 pretty much same way as that radio. I adjust the AF volume to a comfortable level, tune around and talk into the microphone. When the going gets tough, like in the CQWW contest, I crank the hi cut down to 2.1kHz (lo cut stays at 0.3kHz always) and watch the 1.8kHz filter kick in. Occasionally I need the noise blanker. This is an excellent radio which does not need a lot of knob twiddling to perform its duty. The new macro feature is very interesting and I have every intention of creating a few, but so far I have just continued to operate the radio on the bands. It often puzzles me as to why so many people need to get a USB to serial adapter when all is needed is a bit of simple electronics.
