[Elecraft] Running the K3/10 at higher power
This question is really a spin-off from the Power Control at 50-MHz. I measured CW output with PWR set to max on the HF bands with my Bird-43 power meter into a dummy load. I found that a setting of 12w actually netted near 16w output 160-20m, but dropped to 8w on 10 6m. I didn't do a power calibration to set back the power so wondering if there is anything negative from running the K3/10 above 12w? This really would be an advantage for driving the 20/300w amp that I will be assembling. I don't expect full output with 16w drive (maybe 240w) but that will net more than 12w would (180w). I also find that in TEST mode I am getting 0-1.5mw output on 500-KHz vs. 0.5mw cited in literature for the K3. I normally run between 0.25 and 0.62mw to drive my 500-KHz linear (50-100w output), so do not run at the higher levels, but found it interesting that it output more than a mw. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 144-600w, 432-100w, 1296-60w, 3400-fall 2010 DUBUS Magazine USA Rep dubus...@hotmail.com == __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I think the K3 CW decoder is surprisingly good, but it will lose the signal when it gets weak whereas I have seen the PC sound card decoder MRP40 continue to decode a signal that has gone into the noise and I can't hear. Remember that a calibrated BIRD is only guarenteed to be +-5% for a full scale reading. If you are less than full-scale, the accuracy can be much less. Assuming that you are using the same slug, the relative difference between 160-20 and 10-6 meters is probably about right. But the absolute power readings could be off. Re: [Elecraft] KREF3 External Reference Option: Detailed proposal
Wayne, Nice workaround for the lack of ”pin-1” . It seems to offer: Applicable on all XO:s Inexpensive No impact on present XO specification (phase noise etc). Holdover without EXT REF Function check by watching REF CAL Thoughts: 1. The ref oscillator is not actually locked in the above solution. You have talked of an add-on board for the K144XV which will among other things contain a PLL locked to KREF3. There will not be an optimum accuracy between the IF:s unless the K144XV PLL is designed to lock to the EXT REF instead. Then there must be a function for holdover in K144XV also. 2. Someone suggested use of a GPS 1pps ext ref. That is useful if the REF-lock module MCU can perform some averaging over a longer period since the 1 pps is only accurate to 1ppm (typically). Questions: 1. What is the minimum PN , spurious and harmonic requirement for the Elecraft TCXO? I have been trying a prototype using AD4001, a VC-TCXO and an Atmel Tiny. It is locked to an external GPS derived 10 MHz. Probably this solution has higher PN than the Elecraft TCXO. I am also investigating if a Slilicon Labs Si 550 is usable in this PLL. 2. Are you going to publish the K144XV schematic? 73 Jan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You must absolutely use the MONITOR to help you adjust. Another thing that helps is working on your voice. You don't need a top 40 radio voice, but you do need to speak clear and concise. The MONITOR will help you in part to this end also. Don't forget to put the K3 in test mode or zero power when trying this out. I frequently do this to copy the 35 WPM and up guys. I try to improve my personal code sending ability by practicing with my paddle and the K3 in TEST mode. Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW Decoder, Not very good
Being associated with people who have spent a career in automating/computerizing copy of human directly generated communication, they will tell you that the human mind has some abilities to fill, connect, and decode in a manner that are simply not understood by anyone, anywhere...only envied. In other instances, the difficulty is that long running algorithms can decode, but the processing and hardware cost makes it unmarketable for the general public or useless in response-time-critical situations, such as a ham contest. They are working on it, because there is HUGE money in it for the breakthroughs. The amount of RD money spent on these kinds of things is staggering. From their perspective, you are lucky to have the degree of copy that you do. Conspiracy theories abound that breakthroughs have been made but are top secret, in use by military, CIA for monitoring voice channels for trigger phrases. I tend to discount it because the end results seem not to have the improvements such would bring. Given the success that Skimmer is having, it would seem that export of that function to a PC would garner resource levels to the problem not available internally to the K3, if you are not satisfied with the most recent K3 improvements. 73, Guy. It's actually both, of course. Some of the metrics are controlled by logic (hardware and/or software), but inter-character and inter-word spacing are controlled by the human operator. In my experience, this is usually enough to screw up the K3's decoding algorithm. And of course once you start talking about bug-sent or straight-key-sent code, that's another planet altogether. Developing a really brainy hand-sent CW decoder would be very challenging, to say the least -- and even if you could do it, it would almost certainly require way more number-crunching horsepower than is available in the K3's processor. It's one of those things that fall under the label, Theoretically possible, but why bother? There are many much more useful machine-generated digital encoding methods available today. I think Morse code decoding should probably be allowed to remain in the wetware domain. [Elecraft] K3 FSK Interface the clean way...
Ok so I just got an idea on how to make my FSK interface cleaner... I ended up with something very similar to the W3YY interface on my first attempt. You can see their interface here: http://www.w3yy.com/fsk.htm Anyway I had a box and two cables coming out of it with a DB9 on one and a DB15 on the other (I didn't bother with the 3.5mm connector for CW as I use a K1EL for that)... Anyway I just came across one of these laying around in my office: http://www.ftdichip.com/Documents/DataSheets/Modules/DS_TTL-232R_PCB_V100.pdf They were giving these away to showcase their chip and get people to design them into products. I'm thinking I'm going to grab a USB cable that we have laying around and cut it. Then desolder the USB connector on this board and solder the cable into place there. Then solder some SMT optocouplers onto the pads on the end of the board and run wires up to a DB15. I should if I'm careful be able to fit the whole mess into the shell behind the DB15. Then one could have a K3 FSK adapter that just looks like a USB cable with a DB15 on one end. Well at least thats the goal and heck as simple as it all is I'm sure its going to work. [Elecraft] The K3 comes through again
Toward the end of the article in June QST HF Yagi Triplexer Especially for ARRL Field Day it says: We decided instead to eliminate atmospheric noise by replacing his antenna with a dummy load. While this represents an artificial situation, nevertheless it was a useful way to expose underlying interference issues, which we did see in most cases. The only exception was an absence of any interference between the two Elecraft K3 transceivers. Is there a safe way to update a K3 through the microHAM router? I don't like moving the cables for every update. Something is going to wear out or break. Difficult to do it with my 1 good hand . Can I put a Y adaptor on the RS232 and run a USB to my laptop, and leave the microHAM powered off? Laptop isn't connected to the radios at all. I just need an easier way to stay up to date. Can I put a Y adaptor on the RS232 and run a USB to my laptop, and leave the microHAM powered off? No. The unpowered adapter (whether the microHAM device or the USB converter) will pull down the data lines resulting in no data between the K3 and the powered device. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K3- cw- pc program problems??
Thanks for the comments guys. I had a chance to play with this a bit more and am now able to both xmit and receive cw using both Fldigi and HRD5.0. Problem was I had the K3 set for AFSK rather than DATA A. Changing to DATA A allowed me to transmit via the PC sound card and VOX. Interesting observation was as I tried the various data modes for the best sounding received cw signal (comparable to actual cw mode) I thought PSK D was stronger and more defined to listen to. Listening to cw via DATA A was weaker and less defined but still seemed to provide decent decode by the software. Thanks again. chuck af4xk -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-cw-pc-program-problems-tp5179084p5184409.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware updating
You might check on Ebay and see if you can pick up a couple of RS-232 switch boxes. They were quite common years ago so you might find some used ones. Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter Review
Don, The greatest reasons for buying Elecraft are: Great bunch of people. If you jump in early on a new piece of equipment you won't be abandoned with no updates. You can update the equipment, just like the latest release. The service is better than anything I have experience and others should take notice. If you have an issue, you will find a cure. My Wattmeter had an issue. Two days later, board replaced, fixed. They even included the return label and postage for the defective board. (Love the Elecraft. Some called it Mojo.) Did I mention: Great bunch of people. Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- I just read the W2 wattmeter review in the upcoming July, 2010 QST on the member's only pages. Very good read and once again pointed out the excellent customer service we take for granted from Elecraft. Every negative in the intitial review had already been fixed by firmware updates when the author finally took the time to look. The only one found later was quickly fixed with an update from Elecraft when he reported it. Try that with the other manufacturers!! 73, Don, WB5HAK __ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 - Win7 Starter Edition on HP NetBook works great
I have been happily surprised to find that the K3 Utility, N1MM software and a USB cable's ability to load firmware and back up my K3's configuration work flawlessly on my new little HP NetBook computer. I am getting ready for a radio vacation and needed to travel very lightly, so I purchased a refurbished HP NetBook thinking that if it didn't work, I wouldn't be out much money. I have been happy to see that it works great using the serial port at 75 wpm to test out the QRQ features. QSK is VERY sweet now! I won't be using QRQ in real life but I still thought it would be interesting to see if the computer could handle it. No problems. The K3 sent just fine. [Elecraft] K3 Beta 4.03
WOW! I've never liked QSK on any rig, always seemed choppy to me, lots of thunks and thuds, and the fact that the band noise was an inverted copy of what I was sending didn't help either and I always have used semi-QSK. No more! I'll have to try it with N1MM and the Winkeyer tomorrow. Too late tonight. Loading 4.03 went fine. I noticed during the MCU load the delta-F LED was blinking normally but not during the DSP load. I can't remember if that's how it's always been or not, but my radio works great. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2010 Cal QSO Party 2-3 Oct 2010 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
