[Elecraft] K3: RE: Constant Level Line Out Monitor of Xmit Audio
Maybe I should have restated this as questions. :-) Has this feature (a separately adjustable transmit monitor level just for the line out) been implemented and I missed it? If not, has this already been covered in recent discussions? Is this a desirable feature for anyone else? 73 - Bob, N7ZO -Original Message- Hi Joe, I just tested this to be sure. The change you mention requires the transmit monitor to be on and having to hear yourself though the speaker (or headphones). I think what was asked for was something more like the new "DVR TRANSMIT MONITOR SEPARATELY ADJUSTABLE" feature added in version 4.12, a separately adjustable monitor level just for the line out. -Original Message- From: Joe Planisky [mailto:jp...@jeffnet.org] >From the hfwnotes.rtf: MCU 2.72 / DSP 1.98, 12-9-2008 Misc. Re: [Elecraft] RIT?
Hi Tom, This is correct. In receive mode, the RIT amount is added to the VFO A display. But when you go into transmit mode, the RIT offset is taken back out (try using XMIT to see this). You can turn XIT on if you want the offset to apply to both RX and TX. If you want to see the RIT offset at all times, tap DISP and rotate VFO B until you see the offset ("0.00", etc.). 73, Wayne N6KR On Sep 30, 2010, at 4:36 PM, Tommy Alderman wrote: > I'm not sure how this is supposed to work and I can not find an > answer in > the K3 manual. Re: [Elecraft] RIT?
Tommy, I tried my RIT and I agree that the VFO A frequency appears to move as you turn the RIT knob. But if you transmit, the VFO A frequency reverts back to the original frequency. I suppose it might be better to keep the VFO A frequency the same and only show the offset +/- setting for RIT in the VFO B display. That might be less confusing. I never noticed the issue until you pointed it out. I'm not sure how this is supposed to work and I can not find an answer in the K3 manual. When I first got my K3, I thought when I was tuning RIT that my receiver frequency changed but the VFO A display did not. Now when I change RIT, VFO A frequency reading also changes and to me, this is indicating my tx frequency is being shifted also. I have CONFIG:VFO OFS set to OFF and RIT CLR set to UNDO OFF. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Purchase and Accessories Questions
I am sorry you feel that way Don. Certainly, if you are getting flack for posting to this list you are right to refrain. We don't need grief in our lives. If that's the case it's a incalculable loss to this community; something for all who understand the Ham spirit to grieve over. For a decade this list has had a reputation as a place where anyone could ask a question about an Elecraft rig or just Ham Radio in general and get considerate, polite answers and opinions. We've had discussions about everything from what equipment to buy, how to string up an antenna, or how to make a QSO. If it was a question someone with an Elecraft product might have, it was more than welcome, it was encouraged. And the replies were *on* the reflector so others could read and learn, not so they could criticize and scoff at them. Differing opinions? Sure! Questioning a statement? Sure! Those were big part of the value of sharing responses with the list. And under it all was the recognition that the new guy with a new license who wonders how to string up a wire or hold a mic deserves the same consideration and respect as the expert who sits at the top of the DXCC or Contest awards lists. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Sorry to the group. True, but RUmlog has much better integration with the K3. The K3 status panel and macro buttons have become features I miss when I only run MLDX. I also occasionally use RUMlog's access to FSK D. Not necessarily. While using a wideband 2.7kHz IF and letting the PSK31 decoding software do the filtering in DSP is certainly the most common way to work PSK31, you can gain a lot of signal to noise ratio by using a very narrow IF filter. This would be especially useful under tough noise conditions or heavy QRM. It's also important to realize that the optional filters you buy are ROOFING filters that protect the IF from overload by strong signals in its passband, which can be QRM or QRN (either local noise or static crashes). IF filtering is provided by DSP, so you can set anything you want by turning a knob. Seasoned operators have generally settled on the stock 2.7 kHz filter, the 1.8 kHz filter for serious SSB contesting or DXing, and the 400 Hz filter for CW. Those who are even more serious contesters also use the 250 Hz filter for CW and RTTY. That's the collection I use. Filters are easy to add later if you only have one RX, so 2.7 kHz plus 400 Hz is a really good starting point. If, however, you have the Sub RX installed, you want to do it right away, because it is a real PITA to do ANYTHING inside the radio, even something as simple as changing filters. That's because the sub-RX is a real "shoe-horn job." 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 headphone jack failure question
John, I believe you have caught a different bug. The usual failure is that the headphones still work, but the speaker does not - sometimes the speaker stays on even though the headphones are plugged in. It sounds like you have just lost all audio, and the reason for that can be widespread throughout the receiver. Does the S-meter move? If so that rules out a failure prior to the 2nd Xtal filter. A signal generator and a 'scope would be helpful for your Receiver Signal Tracing (see Appendix E in the manual). If you have neither, consider building the signal generator shown in the manual and the RF Probe. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/30/2010 1:09 PM, John Grimm wrote: > I went to plug in my headphones this morning to the headphone jack, and > immediately lost all audio to both the headphone out jack and internal rig > speaker. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Purchase and Accessories Questions
Mark, The KUSB is Elecraft's USB to serial adapter. I would try yours first to see if it works before buying another one. Elecraft's uses FTDI chips now and works well, however. I use the 400hz 8 pole filter for RTTY, for PSK 31 you will probably want to see the whole range of avaliable stations, so the SSB filter would be better in my mind. The 2.7 khz filter is 5 pole, the 2.8 is 8 pole. I chose the 2.8 8 pole as you do all the transmitting through it and I want a clean signal. The cable from the K3 to the 8410, which I also use, is a simple RCA to RCA cable shielded (Radio Shack or others). No need to buy an expensive interface. Re: [Elecraft] [K-3] RTTY for Dummies
Joe, An even simpler approach that doesn't even require a computer is to just use the text decode feature of the K3, which scrolls RTTY text on the VFO B display. I made a number of search and pounce Qs this way in the contest. Memories with your callsign and the exchange can be recorded using a paddle plugged into the radio. Although not elegant, it's then also possible to send RTTY from the paddle (if necessary) since the K3 automatically will convert the CW into RTTY. Someday I'll do RTTY properly, but this method suffices for casual "help your friends out in the contest" mode, hi. 73, Andy, AE6Y CU all in CQP this weekend! [Elecraft] K3 Purchase and Accessories Questions
I am just finalizing what I might need on a new K3. They have an option called the KUSB which I assume in a USB Port for upgrading the firmware. I already have a USB to Serial Port adapter that I have used on my TS-480S. Would the KUSB be necessary? Also I am not much of a CW operator but do operate PSK31. I see an option for either a 5 pole 500 HZ filter or a 8 pole 400HZ filter. Which would work well with this particular mode. I also like to operate the other digital modes also. And, I am more of a SSB operator as of the past few years. I see that the K3 has standard a 2.7 HZ filter which I assume is 8 Pole but then again I'm not sure. But there is also an option for a 8 pole 2.8 HZ filter. Which would work the best for this mode? Finally I will need to hook up my Amp. which is an Alpha 8410. I'm not sure exactly what the cable is that I am using currently on my TS-480s, But has anyone connected a K3 with an Alpha 8410. And if so where did you purchase your connection cable? I appreciate any advice I will recieve. Re: [Elecraft] Diversity Receive
Good topic and timely for me. I have the K3/10 with dual-Rx and no KAT-3. I use an inverted-L for 600m (495.6 KHz) and plan to make a rotatable shielded loop antenna for alternate Rx. Best location is a corner of our back deck but this is nearly underneath the horizontal wires of the inverted-L (43x130 foot). There may be some interaction between the two antenna (1/4 WL at 500-KHz is 930-foot). I may configure the invert-L for 160m later this fall when I have the 300w PA QRV. I could configure for diversity Rx, I think. The inverted-L is connected to the XVT Rx&Tx connectors since the K3 is run in TEST-mode on this frequency (actually, two coax lines connect to the 600m xmtr where there is a T/R relay that connects to the inverted-L). But normally the aux-Rx would be connected to the aux antenna jack. Since this is outside normal ham freq., the KBPF-3 is used. Anyone see any problems with what I propose? If diversity cannot be done then switching between Rx is adequate for selecting antennas. I haven't played with diversity reception, so far. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 144-QRT*, 432-100w, 1296-QRT*, 3400-winter? I have a short groundplane (originally intended for 17 meters) which I use for diversity together with 40 and 80 meter dipoles. I use the K3's preamp with the groundplane, and normally use the attenuator on the 80m dipole. This is a big help with weak cw signals on 40m, less so (but still useful) on 80. On 20m I have a beam, and since the signal is always much better on the beam, there's no advantage from diversity. Sometimes it is useful to check if I'm hearing a signal via long path without rotating the beam. On 160m I have a small ferrite loop which I use for diversity together with my transmitting antenna, a vertical. I have an external preamp for the loop and I use the K3 preamp too. I also use the attenuator on the vertical. It helps a little, but there are lots of better 160m receiving antennas like the K9AY and Beverage. -- Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 headphone jack failure question
I went to plug in my headphones this morning to the headphone jack, and immediately lost all audio to both the headphone out jack and internal rig speaker. Would this be a typical symptom of the oft-referred to K2 headphone jack failure? If so I believe I've now caught the bug... Thanks much for any feedback. Re: [Elecraft] [K-3] RTTY for Dummies
Tom, I asked essentially the same question last week and received good info from the reflector. After reading over 100 pages of AA5AU's excellent website and the MMTY pdf manual I still couldn't get things going. I was still messing around with sound card settings and computer junk. I decided to again try the RTTY already built in the K3 and to further simplify I used the K3 Utility program to get a bigger window for decoded text. Here are the steps that worked for this Dummy: 1. Turn on K3 2. Launch K3 Utility and make sure it is talking to the K3 3. Put K3 in Data mode (next mode down from CW) 4. Press and hold the AFX key to enter Data Mode menu 5. Turn Sub VFO knob until FSK D at 45 Baud is showing. Press AFX key to exit this mode now. 6. Turn on CWT so you have the tuning indicator showing. 7. Tune SLOWLY so you have 2-3 bars on each side of the CWT gap. I listened to the audio as well to help me get a feel for tuning. Once you have the tuning down you will be cooking with gas. You should now have RTTY printing on the K3 Utility screen. You can use the memories to preload exchanges or just rag chew in the text window. No additional 3.5mm cables etc. needed. I spent a couple hours each evening of the CQWW RTTY contest using this. I had 100 watts out through a wire antenna on 40 meters only. I just wandered down the band each night and had 70 QSO's which accounted for 28 countries (DXCC entities) on 40m. Once I got going I wondered why I never worked RTTY before (been licensed since 1972). That's what worked for this Dummy, YMMV. 73, Joe W8JH, K3 1713 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K-3-RTTY-for-Dummies-tp5581358p5588528.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3} Should AGC settings be changed?
Barry, I find myself experimenting frequently with the AGC threshold and slope settings. Don't forget that these menu items can be assigned to the PF or M keys so they can be easily accessed and changed. Since I don't use the K3 internal keyer (I use an external microHam CW keyer), I use M1T for AGC "THR," and M1H for "SLP." 73, Chuck NI0C K3 s/n 1061 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Diversity Receive
On 40 meters and up, I use transmitting antennas at 90 degree offset. 90 degree offset dipoles on 40 deliver a surprising separation on weak dx signals who don't have the big towers and beams. At high incoming angles the offset dipoles separate the signals by incoming polarization. 73, Guy. On Thu, Sep 30, 2010 at 11:55 AM, Craig D. Jim, Turn off the preamp in your K9AY system and you can use it on other bands. The preamp includes a bandpass filter for 160 and 80. Re: [Elecraft] K2 no TX on 20m&30m, no sidetone. after KIO2 upgrade. Any Pointers?
John, I doubt that you did anything on the Control Board to cause this problem. 20 meters and 30 meters share part of the bandpass filter and the entire Low Pass Filter. Check the Low Pass Filter first. Since it receives weakly on both bands, try connecting an antenna center conductor through a .001 uf capacitor to a couple points in the K2 - first get a "level set" by connecting to the AUX RF connector (the pin toward the inside of the K2 - if the signal is louder than at the KAT2 antenna jack, then the problem is in the KAT2 (did you inadvertently set those bands to ANT2?). The next point is the W1 jumper (or pin 1 of the K160RX if installed). If the signal got louder, the low pass filter is the problem area. Next is the W6 jumper (or pin 3 of the K60XV option) - this bypasses both the LPF and the T/R switch area. If you still have low signals there, you can conclude that your problem is likely in the bandpass filter. To verify, touch the capacitor to the cathode of either D6 or D7 - you will likely hear a lot of extraneous noise because you have bypassed any receiver front end filtering, but the relative strength of the signal should indicate where the problem lies. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/30/2010 10:41 AM, EI7GN wrote: > Hi Guys, My K2 serial#01291, with KSB2, K160RX, KNB2, KAF2, KAT2, KBT2, Rev > A control board. > > 2 days ago i decided to build the KIOS that has been sitting on the bench > for a year now. [Elecraft] [K3} Should AGC settings be changed?
I've reviewed the archives and read several different recommendations for changing AGC settings, ranging from changes the SLP from 4 to 15. OTOH, the manual lists the SLP, THR, and PLS settings as "advanced," suggesting they should be changed with caution. Should I make any adjustments to the AGC config parameters? I have a fairly high noise level at my urban QTH. With the SSB filter in, the S-meter sits about S-6 and with the 400 Hz CW filter at S-3 or so. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Should-AGC-settings-be-changed-tp5588203p5588203.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Flex 1500 second K3 Receiver
If you are talking about diversity receive, two receivers must use the SAME source for all the generated conversion frequencies, in order to have them BOTH locked at the same frequency and phase. Although it is theoretically possible to phase lock a Flex and a K3 by some device, equipment makers have zero financial incentive to spend development dollars on something that might service customers who can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Even less incentive than none if that something steers customers to another brand. K3/KRX3 is the best AND cheapest diversity ever put down for hams. I've used it and the results are stunning if you have the ANTENNAS for RX diversity. It's like the integration between the K3 and P3. The development and hard work to debug their very complex interaction and make them work together is paid for by BUYING them together. 73, Guy. Hi Guys, My K2 serial#01291, with KSB2, K160RX, KNB2, KAF2, KAT2, KBT2, Rev A control board. 2 days ago i decided to build the KIOS that has been sitting on the bench for a year now. I took a full day to build and fit same. I removed the control board and did the sidetone mod (cut trace) with the two link wires and cap. On the back of the control board thier were two large resistors in series (83ohms each) soldered together bent over and heat shrink around them. They were soldered to RP5 at pins 7 & 10 at least it looked like 10 as it was broken away and not connected or I may have broken it away during dissasembly. Anyway I soldered to 10. I reasembled the radio with the new KIOS. I changed the sidetone in the menu and got side tone. Next I noticed Lo P indicated when I try to tune auto atu on 20m or 30m only. No output. all other bands ok. Also receive is very very weak on 20m & 30m, all other bands ok. I thought maybe the two resistors should have been disconnected, so took them out. no difference. Then thought maybe a problem with the cut trace mod i did on ctrl board. Reversed that no change. So put the resistors back, no change. Last thing I did was take out the resistors. I now have a barely audible sidetone that must have happened somewhere in the last few steps. Re: [Elecraft] Logging software for Mac
Fldigi is available for Macs and has a built-in log which is somewhat rudimentary. I haven't tried, but suspect it wouldn't take a lot of work to get Xlog to run in OS X, along with hamlib to support a K2 or K3. Re: [Elecraft] Logging software for Mac
Remember also that Wine is available and runs well on OSX I use both Win-Test and KComm on my iMac; both run perfectly with the K2 & K3. SD runs also but can be quirky. KComm could probably be compiled to run directly on the Mac also as the source code is available, but I'm too scared to try it. 73 Ian G4FSU > On Sep 29, 2010, at 8:44 AM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: > > >> > >> Have recently aquired an Apple/Mac > >> computer to use with my K3 setup.? Re: [Elecraft] Logging software for Mac
I have to disagree with you about RUMlog Joe. I use it for general logging all the time. It even has net control which is a boon for me. RUMped does the contesting stuff very well and I also use that but RUMlog is a terrific general purpose logger. I especially like being able to search my log while I am in the middle of logging another contact. This is very useful at times. 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC & HB9DRV-9 DX Clusters Member RSGB, GQRP 9838, FISTS 14077 | K3 #455 http://www.m0scg.org.uk On 29 September 2010 19:57, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: > > > Try out RUMlog by DL2RUM. > > RUMlog is a more focused program > for the contester and DXer. > > >> I have been using MacLoggerDX from Dogpark Software with my iMac and > >> several rigs, including my current K3, for three years now. > > Maclogger DX is a more > full-featured package with the best support of any Mac based logging > offering. > > Both are outstanding offerings ... with excellent support for both > K2 and K3. > > 73, > >...
