Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-22 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Ed,

If you switch between different roofing filters, does the "sweet spot" occur
at the same position of the "RF" Gain control knob or does it change? Also
does the noise / S meter dip by the same amount regardless of which filter
is in use, if not does the depth of dip increase or decrease when switching
from a wide bandwidth roofer to a narrow bandwidth roofer?

On another reflector there has been some discussion about "pileup mush"
which has been reported by only a small number of K3 owners, which problem
IMHO could well be caused by some roofers and the termination presented to
their output. Your observations of a "sweet spot" *might* be related.

[Elecraft] K2 Noise Blanker Revisions

2011-07-22 Thread Nidge_(G0NIG)
I'm in the process of trying to bring an early K2 (serial#653) kicking and
screaming
into the 21st Century, I'll also point out that I'm not the original builder
of this
radio.

For a while I've not been overly convinced about the sensitivity and dynamic
range of this particular example, it hasn't helped matters that along the
way
in my investigations I found numerous build errors.

Today my attention was drawn to the Noise Blanker option. I downloaded
the manual and noticed there were some major differences between my
example and that referenced in the manual. I have looked through the
Elecraft website and found the archived manual for the main build but I
can't find an archived manual for this particular example of Noise Blanker.

I'm lucky in that I have a friend very local to me who is in the process of
building a K2 and so this morning I had the opertuinity to try his more
recent
noise blanker board in my K2. WHAT A DIFFERENCE

I would guestimate that there was a 25-30dB increase in performance when his
noise blanker was installed.

The biggest visual differences between the two boards are:

My older example has variable capacitors for C3 and C5.
Pins 3 and 4 of U3 are shorted together
L1 and L2 are grey torroids, L1 having 13winding and
L2 having 14 windings
L3 is marked with brownish orangey paint and has 15 windings.

I'm hoping someone maybe able to point me to an archived manual
for this earlier version of the noise blanker so I can assertain if it is
reworkable or whether a newer revision should be purchased.

Regards

Nidge (G0NIG)

[Elecraft] KPA500 Air Flow Space Concern

2011-07-22 Thread W0UCE
I am rebuilding my station console and would like to put a wooden shelf
above my KPA500 but am concerned about blocking air flow to the top of the
opening on the top right of the amp. The KPA will sit on the operating
table desktop with the front raised using the bail. If I put a shelf over
the amp I can cut an opening for airflow space if necessary.

If anyone has experience or suggestions regarding minimum space for airflow
I would appreciate your input. Contact offline if you prefer.

Check to see if you have 1.22 volts at the cathode of U1. If not,

[Elecraft] Two questions: ESD & Solder issue w/ PC Board

2011-07-22 Thread Edward R. Cole
David,

Sounds like you have set up well for ESD work. Winter low humidity
conditions are more prone to static electricity. Try not to wear
synthetic fabrics when working on sensitive stuff. Do you have a
anti-static pad? I didn't see mention of one. They are added
insurance when working with static-sensitive parts.

There a few things to ensure better soldering. One thing often
overlooked about new pc boards it to prepare the surface by rubbing
the surface with a plain eraser (such as used with a pencil). Also
wiping off the surface with alcohol helps remove any surface
contaminants like hand oils that interfere with solder flow. Also
try to avoid handling the traces with your hands.

When soldering do you use a moistened sponge for wiping the
tip? keeping the tip tinned is important. Using the proper tip for
the application helps (small chisel tips for surface mount
components); larger tip for soldering to large metal parts. Adjust
heat according to size of the item to be soldered. Clean items to be
soldered (see above). I use an acid brush and alcohol (or electronic
cleaner) on connector pins to promote solder flow. IN certain
situations using a little flux makes a big difference (especially on
large metal items).

Perhaps others will think of something I overlooked.

Hi Everyone!

I have two questions that I would like to pose to the group about
grounding and soldering PC boards:

1.? I know about ESD precautions, and I do take them.? I have a wrist
strap, and my soldering iron is ESD safe.? I am working on my K2 in
the basement.? I have pained concrete floors and walls.? I sit in a
rolling chair that doesn't seem to have any static issues.? And, my
work table is a painted wood bench.? As long as I wear my wrist
strap, I should be OK due to the environment I am in, right?? I'd be
more concerned if I was working in a carpeted room or the like.?
Unless it is winter and I wear a sweater, I never have ESD problems
down in the shack.

2.? Has anyone else had this happen to them...You go to solder your
components onto the board, and the component or board doesn't want to
take the solder immediately?? I had this problem with the 160 meter
board yesterday.? I am using a Weller soldering station with a tip
that looks to be in good order, Kester 60/40 solder, and proper
technique.? Any ideas?

73 & Thanks,

David

Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-22 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
It is possible that there is a problem in the RF gain pot. It IS a
potentiometer. It has a standard voltage across it, and the variable
voltage in the pot's "wipe" is sent to an analog to digital converter,
which converts the pot setting to "numerical advice" which can be more
easily sent to the CPU over one of the various digitally multiplexed
communication busses.

It could be a non-linearity in the potentiometer, where on a normal
K3, the "sweet" spot would be a point in the gain setting where the
absolute unchanging difference between signal and noise is interpreted
most favorably by the ear/brain which has its own way of hearing. That
trick has been around for a long time.

[Elecraft] Help K3 KAT3 No readout no tx carrier

Hi All I am having a problem with my K3 when I built it last December I
did so with the KAT3 auto tuner built in.
It has worked fine for me since then until about a week ago when for
some reason it changed its mind.
Now when I press ATU TUNE button on the front of the K3 the following
happens ,,
the KAT3 whirrs and clicks like it is tuning but I no longer get the
SWR readout on the screen instead I get 2 -- marks also when I TX the
rig TxX light illuminates red but apparently no carrier is TX'd.

I have tried several time to call colleagues that I know can usually
hear me, I have heard them but they are no longer RX'ing me.
I have searced the manual but can find no symptom in it let alone a cure
so guys I am open to suggestions.

Yes the KAT3 is set to Auto.
Yes it makes all the right noises.
Yes I have tried different antenna's.
Yes I have tried different Coax's.
Yes I have tried resetting the KAT3 and waiting the 5 second however
after doing so nothing seems to happen at all
Yes I have tried both Ant 1 and Ant 2.

It just don't seem to work.

Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-22 Thread K7WIA
No I don't believe there is a problem with the pot. because as I just start
to turn it the gain reduces smoothly all the way. I believe it could be in
the software, where as when the gain is reduced the ckt. that controls the
bars in the S meter does not kick in soon enough.
but it seams when I reduce the gain to where the ant. noise gets close to
-136 dbm ( the noise floor of the K3) that is where I can detect the weak
ones the best. It is just that my ears and brain seam to be more sensitive
when the audio is soft than when it is loud, as when there is a lot of noise
with the signal. it is just that I reduce the ant. noise close to the noise
floor of the K3, the signals are still there and they stand out better for
me... it's just that I started to use the old trick that been around for
years, and noticed the S meter did not follow the gain control.

[Elecraft] Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-22 Thread Edward R. Cole
Ed (K7WIA):

OK, so it looks like we have a very similar set ups. Your numbers
let me think about this a bit more.

Your ambient noise is maybe 1-2 s-units higher than mine:
P50VDG: you=S7, mine=S4.5-5
PRE (K3): you=S3, mine=S3 [interesting - I'll come back to this]
K3 with all off: you=S2, mine=0.5-1

All I can think of is that you are reducing noise input when you
lower your RFG to match the internal noise produced by your radio
plus preamps (if on). And that explains the drop in received noise
to a point where the gain drop faster.

Receiving sensitivity on HF/MW/LF is mainly determined by receiver
gain, bandwidth, and detector threshold. If you have enough gain you
maximize sensitivity. Noise Figure (and its counterpart noise
temperature) are not significant compared to the huge level of sky
noise present <30-MHz. Sky noise temperature is something like
15-20,000 Kelvin (K)

OK, at 1296-MHz sky temperature is in the range of 5-10K, so
obtaining a very low receiver noise temp (noise figure) is extremely
important for good receiver sensitivity. Current Gas-Fet technology
provides us with 18-30K low-noise preamps.

At 50-MHz we are half like HF and half like VHF/UHF as sky noise runs
about 2000K. The ARR P50VDG and the K3 PR6 are about 0.5 dB noise
figure (or 35.4K). If we add Tr=35.4K to Tsky=2000K and maybe add
Tant=100K the result is 2135K. As you can see lowering receive noise
temp (noise figure) will not make much improvement in sensitivity due
to the sky noise background.

In urban environments you add local noise, Tn to Tsky and that might
be several additional hundred's K of noise temperature.

So at 6m a receiver's signal sensitivity is mainly a function of
having sufficient gain to drive the detector in the radio
properly. It looks like this is reached somewhere between the gain
of the PRE and either P50VDG and PR6. I will hazard a guess this is
about 18-dB gain. Both preamps produce about 24 dB gain so that is
why the s-meter reads higher than with the PRE. The PRE is set in
gain just about at the level for best reception thus we see little
change when RFG is lowered.

In K7WIA's case he lowers the gain to reach this point. In my case I
have less external noise so lowering gain does not appear to have any
effect on received noise.

What would be a better test is with a weak signal looking at detected
SNR. Also being sure both radio parameters like bandwidth and mode
are the same. One of the reasons to narrow bandwidth at VHF is to
reduce the amount of noise power being received. You reach optimum
at about the point the bandwidth matches the width of the signal
being received. For CW this about 5-15 Hz (depending on speed)
filters ring when that narrow so the human mind is the final CW
filter with 50-Hz about the practical minimum bandwidth that is usable.

Digital modes like WSJT (JT-65) are 4.7 Hz wide so DSP filters of
that width are used to dig out the signal way below the level of a
signal that can be heard with human ears (about 10-dB weaker than CW).

Anyway I digressed from the main topic.

I would be interested if other K3 owners looked at their 6m noise
indication when RFG is backed off slightly.

Yes I am using the K3
I was using the preamp that is in the K3,I also have the ARR P50VD
preamp on the back of the K3 but using it just raises the background noise
to S7.
Remember I live in the city. I can turn off the preamp that is in the K3,
disconnect the antenna listen to the hiss of the K3, and then hook the
antenna back and hear the noise increase.. i am going to try it with out
using any preamp at all...I can still detect the weak beacon that are in my
area. and still hear a increase in noise when the antenna is connected. but
just to reduce the background noise has helped my 73 yo ears make the weak
ones stand out better.
even without the preamp on I still get the 2nd bar on the S meter to
flicker, and i can reduce the Rf gain just slightly ( not much) to dip the
S meter.
just the joys of living in a big city, powerline, and wireless headphones
on 6 meters

Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-22 Thread Merv Schweigert
Was interested in this thread and find that my K3 does the same thing,
but takes a
"vernier" touch to see it, very slight movement of the pot at about
the 2:30 to 3 oclock
position causes the S meter to "dip" down about 1 bar. Never noticed
it because
of the very small area, one passes by so fast you will never see it.
I also find thats about where I run my RF gain almost 99 percent of the
time,
Its not the dip that means anything at all, its where you run the RF
gain that is
what works. With this many K3 exhibiting the same thing its not the
gain pot,
its something in firmware, which as far as I can tell does nothing at
all other
than its the same place approx where its a good spot to run the RF gain.

to set the manual gain to max. then go into the menu and be able to adjust

Re: [Elecraft] Help K3 KAT3 No readout no tx carrier

2011-07-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chris,

First simplify your setup by eliminating the antenna from the equation.
If you have an in-line wattmeter, connect it between the K3 and the
dummy load.
Do an ATU TUNE - make sure you have the correct ANT selected.
What do you see for the SWR?
When you transmit, what do you see for the power output?

If you can tune into a dummy load, and the power output is close to the
power setting on the K3, then you can look to your antenna system for
your answers, but if you get "crazy" results into the dummy load, first
check the coax between the K3 and the dummy load, and then blame the K3.

I've tried left side, right side, and top for my P3s, and have settled
on top. To avoid interference with ventilation, it needs to sit to one
side, which leaves at least half of the top open. That's important --
ventilation requires both a gozinta and gozouta, and the rear top grille
is part of that path. I just finished a 10 hour RTTY contest, running
the K3s at 100w barefoot, and I never heard the fans speed up.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Air Flow Space Concern

2011-07-22 Thread n5ge

Jack,

My KPA500 is on my table top with the bail up with a shelf that is 1.25 inches
above the front of the KPA500 and there is about one inch of space on both sides
of the amp and the back of the amp is about a foot from the nearest wall and the
connections to the back of the amp all drop down below the table top. There is
about 3.5 inches clearance between the top of the amp and the bottom of the
shelf at the rear of the amp.

It's always 75F in my shack year round. The amp temp when idle for a few
minutes is 26C. I leave the fan running on speed 1 all the time, so the temp
drops rapidly when I've stopped sending CW. The top of the amp never gets warm.

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 low output

2011-07-22 Thread Andrew Moore
Problem solved!

Thank you in particular to Tony KT0NY, Don W3FPR and Alexey.

Turns out that D1 was the problem. Note! It wasn't due to a short as some
had suggested, but rather, checking the errata sheet revealed that on the
Rev. A board (like mine), the silk screen was backwards. The banded end of
diode D1 (1N4148) should be nearest to R7, which is the opposite of what the
silkscreen suggests. Turns out my XG2 was assembled incorrectly from the
start (I'm guilty). Not sure if the errata was issued yet when bought my
XG2 or if that came afterwards, but in any case, I cut out D1 and replaced
it in the opposite direction and instantly have a proper 50 uV signal.

I did also remove D2 (the rectangular "output" LED) but I'm not sure if that
was a problem or not.

Thank you all; I would never have noticed this problem unless you mentioned
it. Now I will proceed with calibrating the K3 using this reference signal.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Heatsink temperatures

2011-07-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
George,

That 145 degF temperature is 62.8 degC. While that is high, it is not
so high to create any damage.
Your shack temperature is much higher than what is considered "normal
ambient", so that is a contributing factor.

The auxiliary cooling with your high ambient temperature is a good
thing. 115 degF is 46.1 degC.

In "normal" situations with an ambient temperature of 23 degC, the
internal fan will do its job nicely and will usually keep the heatsink
temperature below 60 degC. If the CAL tpa parameter is set properly,
the fan will go to high speed at 40 degC (104 degF) and remain on high
until the temperature drops to 37 degC (98,6 degF).

In most cases, the "hold" temperature rule applies. If you can hold
your hand on it with only minor discomfort, all is OK, but if you cannot
hold your hand on it for more than 2 minutes, it is hotter than normal.

We are experiencing some hotter than normal temperatures over much of
the NA continent, so be safe and stay cool. Temperatures in excess of
100 degF are expected here in North Carolina for the next 2 days, with
heat indexes in excess of 115 degF - going outside is like stepping into
a sauna bath. Anyone disagree with global climate change?

[Elecraft] K3 Utility and OS X Lion

2011-07-22 Thread David Fleming
I've received several emails concerning the compatibility of the K3 Utility for
Mac with OS X Lion. I installed Lion on my development iMac and initial tests
show no issues with the K3 Utility, P3 Utility and W2 Utility. Everything seems
to be working FB.

There are already plenty of comprehensive reviews of Lion out there. I wanted
to mention a couple of my observations that you might find useful. The online
upgrade was an interesting experience. It was much like downloading apps on the
iPhone and iPad. At 3.74 GB, the download took about 45 minutes over my fairly
speedy Cox Cable connection. I don't know how dial-up folks will fare (if there
are any Mac users still on dial-up). Not very well I suspect. Once the download
was complete, after I kicked off the installer and clicked past the license
agreement,  the installation took about 25-30 minutes.  One of the first things
I noticed, other than the new "natural" scrolling, which you will either love
or hate, is the fact that the User Library folder is now hidden. I suppose
Apple did this to prevent new users from inadvertently deleting this important
folder. The K3 Utility (and many other apps) use the ~/Library/Application
Support folder to store
application data. I find myself navigating to the Library folder very often. I
was a bit panicky when I thought it was no longer there! Turns out it is still
there, but it is now hidden. This is very easy to fix by opening up the
Terminal and typing in this line:

chflags nohidden ~/Library

If you want to hide it again:

chflags hidden ~/Library

Scrollbars have been removed and now only subtly appear when you are actually
scrolling (ala iOS). Once you get used to the natural scrolling of list views
and windows there is no going back. As I mentioned above, you'll either love it
or hate it. You can always switch back to the classic scrolling if you want,
but give the new scrolling a chance. It is one of those things that once you
get used to it, it feels completely natural.

If you're on the fence about upgrading to Lion, I say go for it. It's an
impressive piece of software.

[Elecraft] XV-144 Receiver RF Amp Bias Adjustments

2011-07-22 Thread KJ4YQK
R13 is not adjusting anything. 0 volts. I was wondering what to look for.
Has anybody experience this, and what is the corrected action.
What voltage should I read at C4 D3 junction. Should it be 6.8 volts?

Thanks Dave

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility and OS X Lion

2011-07-22 Thread Phil Hystad
David,

For those slow dialup links, Apple offers a DVD version of Lion for $49 via the
Apple Store. My installation procedure on two iMacs and my Macbook Pro was
about the same as your experience. Thanks for the tip on the hidden Library.
When I read your message I jumped over to my terminal window which is almost
always running somewhere on my mac to take a look. I was surprised to find
that ~/Library was quite visible. Then, I realized that you were speaking of
the hidden flag for the Finder GUI and not the File system itself.

I agree that Lion is a great system although I am still getting used to the
change in gestures for scrolling. I have the touch pad and also the magic
mouse on all my systems (my wife has one of the iMacs) so I use gestures for
scrolling quite a bit and the reversal is a little getting used to although I
had known of this by watching the WWDC videos from earlier this year.

Unfortunately, we did find one little glitch. My wife's Rosetta Stone
application does not recognize the audio input microphones anymore although
they are there and working just fine (both internal and external USB). I need
to call this into Rosetta.
