[Elecraft] KPA500 Leftover parts?
For those of us with no leftover parts (KPA500 #245 here) will there in due course be a mod kit, perhaps KPA500TRSFMRBLTMDKT or some similar snappy title ;-) ? 73 to all Geoff G3UCK PS I sent this earlier, in HTML as I now realise, and an automatic smiley may have inhibited it in some way. Thanks for the comment Johnny - it certainly looks like that's true but it would be good to make the mod just in case of rough transport and also I like to keep my Elecraft kits up to date as far as practicable. 73 Geoff -Original Message- From: vr2xmc Sent: Saturday, September 17, 2011 12:23 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Leftover parts? [Elecraft] KPA500
Dang it, I just had to go against my principles and set up for QRO operation. Ordered a KPA500 to complete the K-Line station. There have been times when even 100 watts was marginal on RTTY and I really like that mode. Never had an amp that would stand up to the rigors of RTTY rag chewing before, so it will be nice to be able to punch a button and compensate for marginal conditions. Especially when working some of my old friends overseas. Wife got her new kitchen and bathroom and asked me what I wanted for myself. Told her either a KX3 (not available yet) or the KPA500 which was much more expensive. She grabbed the keyboard on my computer, hit the Elecraft website and looked it up. Said, Order it!, so I did, along with the Aux cable to allow me to use my external FSK interface and still have the KPA500 talk to the K3. Never had a full QSK amp before either, so this one will be really nice. David knows me too well - LOL. He brought his QRP K2, a 6 2 meter transverter and a large handful of Elecraft's mini-modules to the Kansas State ARRL convention and helped N3ARU and I put on a super demo with a pair of K3's plus the K2 on real antennas and operating on the same band (in different modes) without interference. Sure got the attention of a bunch of people. I actually have another ham (that has an Alpha 9500 amp) that's also a CW contester, living within 5 blocks of me and as I've said before, prior to the K3 I was unable to operate the same band he was on in a contest without using all the attenuator whatever rig I had at the time had in it. Now, I don't even know he's on unless I roll across him in searching the band. His rig is a Yaesu FT-1000D and I suspect when I crank up the KPA500, he's going to notice I'm on anywhere in the CW portion of a band. The FT-1000 has some sort of roofing filter, but I have no experience with it so don't know how effective it really is compared to the K3. Jim - W0EB Somebody check is temperature QUICK! [Elecraft] KPA500
Without a single intention to bad month FT1000D, I must say that this ex-Yaesu flag ship is of older technology. Modern radio including K3 has a much quieter synthesiser. Roofing filters and IF DSP were something uncommon in the era of FT1000D. Back to KPA500, its IMD shown in the FCC submission is not worse than any of the solid state amplifiers tested in product reviews of ARRL. I really wish my P3 had a ground screw, just on general principles if for no other reason. I think I'll make up a piece of RG-58 with a BNC on one end, and the braid pigtailed on the other and connected to my single point ground. I can then plug it into the IF OUT jack on the P3 for grounding. I'm fairly certain whatever is causing the problem is at the far display end of the P3 receiver chain, the entire receiver part seems to be unaffected, it's just the baseline. Noise and signals go up the little baseline hill just as they do when it's horizontal. If you see this, lay your hand on the top of the P3. For me, that returned a normal baseline. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2011 Cal QSO Party 1-2 Oct 2011 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I have just ordered a P3 to go with my first run K3 (sn 300). I have asked several guys a know, but the common answer so far is, I think so. I'd like something a bit more concrete. :-) If you have a P3, recently received is better, please RSVP off line. Re: [Elecraft] Question about P3
Maybe I spoke too soon -- since I ordered my K3 with a KXV3a, I can't say for sure whether the resistor came with the K3 or with the KXV3a. What I do know for a fact is that my K3 kit (s/n 5614), which I ordered at the same time as a KXV3a, around early July 2011 (not June as I previously thought), came with the resistor kit which I installed. Arrival date was early July 2011. It was the kit version, not factory assembled. In any event, whether or not yours comes with the gain mod kit, it's simply a single resistor (13k, 1/8 W) that replaces R8 on the board. I used the SMD version so I have the through-hole resistor still available (kit came with both), which you're welcome to if you can't find one. --Andrew, NV1B .. Good Evening, Summer is over. From the 85 degrees of last Sunday to the 52 degrees of today the weather has not only gotten much colder but now it is back to rain and clouds. I have never had a summer that lasted only two weeks. Now the long range forecast has changed so next year will be much like this year. Maybe the Farmer's Almanac will give me better news. Propagation was good on twenty meters during the morning hours this week. I got to be one of the K6JSS/7 ops from Oregon this week. Twenty was great to the East Coast while forty was almost exclusively West Coast. I did get a contact on 15 meters into the Southeast. Too bad it was only one week and won't happen again for another 50 years.
