[Elecraft] Edgeport 4-port serial adapter...

2011-09-27 Thread John Ragle
Confirming what Don Wilhelm says...I tried a number of serial adapters,
and the only one that worked flawlessly was the Edgeport 4-port adapter.
I used it with a K2, XP Pro, and FLDIGI (and/or DigiPan earlier). I
also used it for a while with a K3, WIN7 (and previously Vista RIP), and
FLDIGI. More recently, I chose to install a serial port card in my
"mainframe" (v.i.), primarily to simplify the hardware in the shack.

[Elecraft] Mini-RF chokes too big?! (KIO2 AUX I/O Module)

2011-09-27 Thread kruegerbenny
Yesterday I started to assembly the KIO2 AUX I/O Module. The problem is that
the the (subminiature) chokes I've got are bigger than I think they should
be, their body is as long as the distance between the pads so it's
impossible to install them flat on the board.
Are these the wrong chokes or is this normal?

Thx Benny

Re: [Elecraft] K2 fldigi with USB adapter problem

2011-09-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ron,

I cannot speak specifically about the adapter you are using, but many
will not work properly at the K2 baud rate of 4800 bps. The one that I
have tried which works is an Edgeport 4 port adapter. I have heard that
the FTDI chipset adapers work better than those with the Prolific
chipset, but that is just information I have gathered by hear-say. All
I can state with certainty is that my Edgeport adapter works with the K2
using Windows XP and Ham Radio Deluxe/DM780.

[Elecraft] K2 fldigi with USB adapter problem

2011-09-27 Thread R Thompson
I've been experimenting with fldigi on my K2. When I plug the KIO2
interface RS232 directly into the RS232 of my desktop (running Ubuntu)
RigCAT works somewhat (filter reading and selection from fldigi seems to
have a couple of bugs), and Hamlib does not work. Its useable this way.
If I use an A-Ten, model UC-232A, RS232 to USB adaptor with the desktop,
or the two laptops I've tried so far, it doesn't work. It occasionally
indicates the correct frequency and mode but usually indicates useless
numbers.

Is this a problem with the UC-232A convertor? Will using the Elecraft
model fix this problem?

On an aside, is anyone else working with an Asus EEEpc, a 701SD in my
case, with Puppy Linux and fldigi?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Hum

2011-09-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dave,

Yes, you are correct, the foam may take some time to recover, but if
loosening the bolt makes a change, then that is the problem.

I am doing well, and in fact this weekend, my antenna farm will get
higher. I have a crew coming over to put the VHF/UHF antenna on the 48
foot tower - that project has been 3 years in the making, but it will
finally happen. My first time on VHF/UHF too, so this is a new
adventure for me.

We should have a good party on Saturday. 3 guys willing to climb the
tower (myself included), and at least 4 more for the ground crew. Most
everything is now ready to go up. Finally, my Yaesu FT-847 will find
some use, and I can check in with the locals on 2 meter FM.

Re: [Elecraft] S-meter Lite with LP-Bridge or VSPE

2011-09-27 Thread Gregg W6IZT
It is difficult at best to get multiple applications to share a serial port.
In your case it is likely that both apps are sending queries to the radio
causing collisions to occur. This can result in the apps locking up or in
some cases the serial port on the K3 locking up.

I use DXLab for logging and SpectraVue with an SDR-IQ for a panadapter. They
share the same serial port and play well together because I can configure
DXLabs to not send queries to the radio. DXlabs will read the data returned
from the radio from the SpectraVue queries.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Hum

2011-09-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Yes, the "resonating board" may explain the difference between various
perceptions of KPA500 owners about the hum level. To check for that, it
is a simple matter of lifting the KPA500 up with your hands - if the hum
level diminishes, then the surface it is sitting on is acting as an
acoustical amplifier.

There have been other items mentioned in this thread - the transformer
contacting the Z bracket is one valid problem caused by improper assembly.

The transformer itself has isolating foam washers that were to be placed
above and below the transformer core for acoustical isolation. I can
imagine if the bolt were tightened enough to compress those foam washers
completely, then hum might be transmitted to the KPA500 enclosure - try
loosening the bolt slightly to see if the hum goes away or diminishes
significantly.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 question RFI?

2011-09-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

I cannot understand (with the data you have provided) how the K1 could
be causing something like that.
Can you hear it with the antenna disconnected? If so it is a source
outside the K1.
If it persists with no antenna, the next step is to check the power
source - power it from a battery (an automotive battery with the vehicle
not running is perfect if there is no alternative). If it is still
present with the battery, and with no antenna, you could conclude that
it is being produced in the K1.
If it is external to the K1, there is likely not much you can do about
it in a vacation situation.

There are noise sources that are frequency limited (just due to the
physics of the source), and they could actually be harmonics.

Do they appear at only one frequency on the band, or are there multiples
per band? If only one spike per band, what are the frequencies for each
band?

Re: [Elecraft] the hummers

2011-09-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Absolutely Mike. I am not an Elecraft employee, but I have worked with Eric,
Wayne and the Elecraft staff on for ten years now.

I monitor this reflector primarily to see if there are any consistent issues
with building the gear that I can fix with an addition or change to the
manuals.

I know that Wayne and the rest of the engineering staff are watching for
issues like this to investigate or ideas that they can incorporate into the
product (without pricing it out of the market, Hi!)

They have been doing that since the first K2 shipped over a decade ago.

A while back I reported a problem with the K3 that when I plugged in

the back jack did not do this. The actual cause was that a pin was bent
while reconnecting the front panel after installing the DSP mod.
Reporting back to Elecraft what I found might save the next guy a bunch

[Elecraft] K1 question RFI?

2011-09-27 Thread john Wiener
I am on vacation and using my K1. I don't have much in the way of tools and no
test equipment.
My model ( serial 02676 ) has a 4 band module.

On 40 30 and 20M bands I get a spike interference of about 4/sec in the first
15 KHz of the bands.
This does not occur on 15M. It could be an RFI source but thought I'd ask.
Odd to be on the first 15 KHz of 3 out of 4 bands

Advice appreciated

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Hum

2011-09-27 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Another issue is what the amp is resting upon.

Back when I first got my Alpha 76PA, I had a noticeable hum when
transmitting. When I wised up a little, I tried it from different places
and noted that the volume had a very large variation depending on where
placed on the upper shelf or simply where elsewhere it was placed. I cut up
a little mouse pad that had become ugly into 1.5 inch circles and placed
them under the feet of the amp. Hum out in the room simply went away. You
can barely hear the note from a violin string that is strung between braces
on a workbench, but the same bow on the same string on a violin can be heard
thoughout the concert hall. The shelf was serving as the violin to the
Alpha's hum.

I still use the mousepad circles under the amp. If you put the the mouse
surface of the pad *on the bottom* then the amp will slide around if pushed
a little and is much easier to position or get into place.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Hum and Sticky Relay?

2011-09-27 Thread Geoffrey Downs
I did as you Roy but if I press my ear to the top of the KPA500 case I can
hear a faint hum. It is the same with my 12v linear power supply underneath
the bench. I do not believe it is a fault but fairly normal for linear power
supplies. Occasionally both the KPA500 and the power supply under the bench
will hum more loudly for a short time. I have always put this down to
variations in the mains supply waveform as referred to by Ian GM3SEK in his
earlier message.

As regards the "sticky relay" phenomenon - I have experienced this a couple
of times. Switching the KPA500 off and then back on again has cured it.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Hum

2011-09-27 Thread Roy Morris
Referring to kit assembly instructions, Rev B, June 22, 2011:
The following is on page 33. When placing the transformer on the chassis
you are told to press it toward the Z-Bracket so it does not hit the rubber
bumpers installed earlier. Then
above figure 49 on the same page it says the bumpers press
against the side of the transformer near the bottom. Maybe some are
installing the transformer so it is resting against the Z-Bracket causing
vibrations (hum) and not firmly against the rubber bumpers as it should be.
Also some of the wires may be trapped (pressed) between the transformer and
the Z-Bracket causing the Z-Bracket to vibrate. I snugged the transformer
against the rubber bumpers, and I can see light between the transformer and
the Z-Bracket. I have not experienced any hum at all. Roy W4WFB

Re: [Elecraft] ARRL Handbook special - Limited quantities

2011-09-27 Thread Sandy
The reasons why I don't get a "Handbook" every year are simple.

First they changed to a much harder to handle frontal size! This adds to
the BIG liability they insist on keeping, which I list as my second reason
for not buying one every year: the paper stock is much too heavy!
This makes the whole book not as handy as it used to be!

The third reason is the price has gotten astronomical! I would break it
into two different "sections". One that does most of the theory and design
work, components specs., semiconductor information, etc. Another "section"
that would describe "projects" (as they call it now!) This would be small
gadgets to complete transmitters and "do it yourself" gear and antennas.

Each volume small enough to easily carry and use, especially for us "older
amateurs" who don't work out and develop the muscle to handle these heavy
manuals!

Eric,

Next time I order a ARRL handbook, it will be AFTER they finally produce
it in two separate volumes. My 5 pound 2010 version is far, far too
unwieldy to use in most cases. I speak for many friends who stopped
ordering because it got too heavy. I think they are finally getting the

The K3 is VERY flexible with respect to headphones and mics. It
provides the bias you need at both the front panel (8-pin) and rear
panel (1/8-in) mic connectors. All you have to do is go into the setup
menu and choose the mic connector you want to use and turn on the bias.
The K3 also has an excellent graphic equalizer that can make virtually
any decent mic sound great, whether your definition of great is full ham
response for rag chewing or narrow, punchy response for maximum talk
power. Note that TX and RX response are limited by the crystal filter
used for TX and the IF response used for RX.

ordering because it got too heavy. I think they are finally getting the
message, according to the receptionist at ARRL.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Hum

2011-09-27 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Arie,

There has been additional new hardwares in the installation of the
transformer as in the latest KPA500 kit construction manual.

I have solved the hum problem by trying another transformer tap and installing
the new hardwares.

Johnny VR2XMC

Hope there comes a hardware mod to obtain minimum hum.

Earl,

Did the same here.
It's an easy job, if you take it step by step. Don't be in a hurry.

Re: [Elecraft] PKA 500 HUM

2011-09-27 Thread Toby Pennington
I have an Astron 35M which does this. I placed two heavy books on top of the
cabinet, and this quietens it down. Keying in cw makes it much worse.

I think I will postpone getting the KPA 500 until this is solved.

The amp uses a linear supply, which is good, but if the transformer is not
insulated (isolated ) properly it can be a night mare.

Hum that comes and goes for no apparent reason might be caused by some
other large electrical appliance distorting the AC supply waveform - for
example, an electric motor with a chopper-controlled Variable Speed
Drive.

Although the 60/50Hz hum level from the KPA500 transformer is normally
very low, a sudden increase in the higher harmonics could be quite
noticeable.
