Has anyone worked out how to read the swr presented to the k3 as a numeric
value using the "terminal" commands?

I can see it on the LCD but getting the value remotely has defeated me after
much trying

[Elecraft] KX3 kit shipping estimate

I decided my kit will be shipped to me on July 5th. I figure the ramp-up on
kits will take off in about a month or so and then the numbers shipped will
rapidly escalate. I'm #151 on the kit "spreadsheet" so we'll see ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] Building 3080 first...then KX1

2012-05-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Replace the 4th paragraph below with this corrected copy:

At that point, you can do the tests on 40 and 20 meters indicated in the
KX1 manual beginning on page 43. When you have finished those alignment
and test steps, go back to the *KXB3080* manual and continue on page 8
through to the end. The only components you will have to remove are L1
and L2. You can clean up the 4 solder pads with solder wick and if the
holes do not come clean, heat the pads and use a toothpick or a
stainless steel needle to push the solder out of the holes.

-
Chuck,

It will not be easy to build the KXB3080 first because it cannot be
tested, and part of it is making changes to the KX1.

If you want to do it properly without removing many components, you will
build the KX1 up through page 30 in the manual. Then on page 31, mount
L6 on the bottom of the board, and Do *not* install L7. Then on page
32, do not install C27, and on page 33, do not install C26, nor C1.

When you get to page 40 in the KX1 manual, I strongly recommend that you
wind and install L1 and L2 as instructed - the downfall of most builders
for the KXB3080 is a problem with the tiny Low Pass Filter Board.

When you finish with page 42, go to the KXB3080 manual and do all steps
through page 7.

At that point, you can do the tests on 40 and 20 meters indicated in the
KX1 manual beginning on page 43. When you have finished those alignment
and test steps, go back to the KX1 manual and continue on page 8 through
to the end. The only components you will have to remove are L1 and L2.
You can clean up the 4 solder pads with solder wick and if the holes
do not come clean, heat the pads and use a toothpick or a stainless
steel needle to push the solder out of the holes.

Task accomplished. After you have done 3 of these KX1 with KXB3080
options successfully, you can skip the stock L1 and L2 toroids and the
subsequent testing, but until then, I recommend you follow my
instructions. Should you have problems, I can send you my repair fee
schedule.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and noise with external speakers

2012-05-15 Thread Thomas Horsten
Hi Dwayne,

I already use the macros, I have PF2 set to toggle SPKR+PH on/off so I can
turn the speakers off when I'm wearing the headset (PF1 is set to
enable/disable ESSB, and could be considered a spare since I hardly ever
use ESSB).

But the problem is that in CW I like to operate with both speakers+headset,
so I can put the headset on if I hear something interesting and want to
copy it better (over the noise of the linear and other ambient noise). For
stronger signals, I just have the QSO with the speakers and not the
headset. Of course for SSB I need to wear the headset if I don't have the
desk mic out, but then SSB is only about 10-20% of my QSO's.

When I get my desk mike out again, I think I will reprogram PF1 to switch
between the front mic/headset as you suggest.

Actually if I can find a solution to the speaker noise problem, I think
everything will be ok. The only other thing is what Arthur mentioned and I
elaborated on, the MON level. It is hard to send CW if the MON tone is too
low, and I adjust the volume up/down to accommodate the situation (ambient
noise) when I'm on the speakers, but MON doesn't follow. So if MON could be
made to track AF, I think I would have close to the perfect setup for my
operating style!

[Elecraft] Building 3080 first...then KX1

2012-05-15 Thread ke9uw
Rather than unsolder a number of components by buildingd the KX1 first, I'm
going to build the 3080 and then the KX1 without the removed/subbed
components. I figure if I make no errors, no problems...or is there some by
me unforseen caveat?
I took about 10 years to build the K2...collected all the mods during that
time and incorporated them into the 2000 year vintage K1 which worked when
finished. I had bought two firmwear chips before i ever turned it on the
first time. The KX1 is not as big a job.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and noise with external speakers

2012-05-15 Thread Dwayne Rohmer
Thomas,

You might want to consider using a macro to adjust the monitor level? At the
same time, you can change the EQ and other settings to suit your needs.

I use two macros to control microphones, speakers and TX EQ. They are
assigned to PF1 for the hand mike and PF2 for the headset/boom mike. The
last line in these macros changes the monitor level, OFF for speakers, and
ON for headphones. Adding code to change RX EQ might also help you reach
your goal of getting the volume where you want it.

To use these macros, press and hold PF1 to use the hand mike; press and hold
PF2 to use the headset/boom mike. Pressing either PF button a again toggles
the speakers ON and OFF.

select Front mike - Toggle Speakers ON/OFF - TX EQ set for MH-2

Select Front Mike
Toggle Speakers On/Off
Exit Menu

I realize that I'm only one of a crowd, but for my type of operation
(CW pileups), APF and CWT are secondary to a much improved AGC.

Re: [Elecraft] New K3 Firmware: Improved AGC (great for pile-ups as well as general operation)

2012-05-15 Thread Adi Toplician
Hello

couple of my observations:

I also noticed that APF action it's somehow softer than it was. Due to my
modest antenna conditions APF was a tremendous help in working some really
weak signals dxpeditions. Now it's action it is not the same, it helps but
not that much like on the older firmware when actually without the APF it
was impossible to copy something.

Now I use AGC:
THR is on 14
SLP is on 10

SLP bellow 10 act somehow like AGC OFF, for every quite strong signal I
have to turn down the AF gain so it was quite uncomfortable until I found
SLP=10 was a good value, at least for the moment, hi.

CWT it seems it's not so sensitive using the same settings like in the old
version.

Autonotch is working fine, Noise reduction, even on F1-1 (on CW) introduce
a small "delay" like muting the signal for 1-2seconds but I guess it was
the same with the older firmware.

The new K3 Utility software has a small minus from my point of view:

working CW with the K3 Utility 1.4.4.25 it was easy to use memories on the
terminal tab because I set the button on transmit and just clicking the
callsign box(memory) until it was copied by Dx station; now on version
1.12.3.28 the button doesn't stay on transmit it goes on stop very fast
requiring an additional click on transmit every time after
callsign/control, etc. Not very practical when working DX in this manner.

Overall the AGC improvement is obvious.

Hi Art,

I totally have that problem as well, but I was more bothered by the other
one for now so that's why I wrote about it. It would be amazingly nice if
you could have the MON level track the AF level. In fact, it would be a
killer feature.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and noise with external speakers

2012-05-15 Thread Arthur Burke
My speaker approach was a pair of formerly "rear" speakers in a surround
sound system - SONY in this case. Having stereo speakers provides (most of
the time) the same effect as stereo headphones - when the sub-rx is on, DX
from the left side and pileup from the right side - although it's easier to
"work" through the pileup with phones.

My problem is not with the speaker/phone volume, but with the monitor
(sidetone) volume. When it's set more-or-less normally for speaker use,
it's much too loud for use with the "cans" on.

My daily (and therefore also for DX) logging program is DXLabs. Commander
provides a host of User Defined Controls - one of which I use to alter the
monitor level - significantly lowering it before slapping on the
headphones. Then, the second push, when I'm finished, restores MON to the
old level.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 and noise with external speakers

2012-05-15 Thread Thomas Horsten
Hi,

I like to alternate between operating with headset and speakers and find
the K3's built-in speaker inadequate (plus I want stereo). So I purchased a
pair of Audioengine A2 speakers (black, and with the corresponding desk
stands, wonderful little speakers I must say and they look GREAT next to
the K3 - judge for yourself: http://goo.gl/KErTo)

Now the problem is that I have been running with AGC=LOW since it gives me
a comfortable range in the headset. The speakers have a volume control on
the back, so I thought I could adjust that to get a volume that was similar
in the headset. The problem is that with a low enough AF volume setting on
the K3 that the headset isn't blasting my ears out, and the speakers volume
set to give a similar level to that of the headphones (about 66% of their
max), the speakers give a very noticable very low frequency bassy "click"
once a second anytime the K3 is turned on.

It's like "thump, thump, thump" at one second intervals. This is loud
enough to be noticeable when the speakers and the headphones are at about
the same level for the real audio. If I turn the speakers' gain down and
turn the K3's AF knob up, I get FB loud enough audio without hearing this
problem, but with a low enough volume in the headset for it to be
comfortable, I have to turn the speakers up where the "thump" gets
noticable to get rid of it again.

I'm powering my K3 from a car battery that is in turn hooked up to a smart
charger. This has never caused me any problems in the past, but it would
seem that this artifact comes from the smart charger somehow, as soon as I
disconnect it the problem goes away and I can have the speaker volume all
the way up to max without hearing it.

As I said I've never had any audio (or other) problems before from having
that battery charger connected. Any suggestions for what to try next would
be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] FW 4.51 CWT ( Another Perspective)

2012-05-15 Thread Rick Bates
That's confirmed here too. I thought I'd (yet again) done something wrong
so it's nice to see someone else make the same observation.

On a weak yet copyable signal (some arctic flutter), there was no CWT
response (and therefore no decoding either). Altering THR or SLP did not
make any significant change. Setting "auto" didn't help; my normal 1-3
still had trouble. Dual passband mode didn't affect it either.

CWT worked GREAT in 4.48.

Ah-yup, that's the cost of beta-ware; two steps up, one sideways. :-) I
know you'll get a handle on it guys.

There is definitely an issue with cwt function in the latest beta firmware.
A clearly audible but weak cw signal failed to pulse the indicator properly
at manual 1.
Usually the noise is pulsing it around 1-3, but that is no longer the case.
It needs fixing. I noticed it quite a while ago, but kept quiet to see if
anyone
else picked it up. It is no longer sensitive to other than strong signals.

All you have to do to get good CWT copy is to turn the CWT Threshold to
about 7.

I get good copy with CWT with the NB on of off at this setting.

I have the AGC threshold set to 14 and the SLP set to 000.

I have run the SLP up to a setting of 10 and still get good CWT print.

I am not sure we have a problem with CWT at all. Just the right setting of
CWT threshold.

As far as the Auto Notch is concerned, I like the present reiteration of
the Auto Notch.. It might be a second slower in notching, but it does
notch. The reason I like it that it does work at my settings, and is not
as aggressive which means less distortion of the receive audio when engaged.
Less of the hollow sound or watery sound when engaged.

"Weird ticking noises" for me have always been electric fences. I track
them down with my KX1. Most of the time, they start up in the late
spring when weeds grow up to the wire. By now, the neighbors don't mind
if I follow their fence lines and just fix them.

[Elecraft] Important KXPD3 keyer paddle installation note

2012-05-15 Thread Wayne Burdick
A few KXPD3 users have found that the paddles operated intermittently.
This can be easily corrected.

First, completely remove one of the paddle thumbscrews. Next, using a
drill bit that's somewhat larger than the #4 hole, add a *very* slight
bevel (countersink) to the hole. This will remove a small amount of
the black anodizing, allowing the thumbscrew to make consistent
electrical contact with the keyer paddle housing. (The thumbscrew's
post flares slightly where it joins the face; the flared area will
contact the bevel in the aluminum.)

We've already added this step for KXPD3s shipped starting today.

Re: [Elecraft] Help Please KIO2 L4 Burnt Out

2012-05-15 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
All you'd have to have is one ground not making contact until you pushed or
checked it. Power ground is an important issue to have exactly right all
the time. You can sometimes eliminate some possible paths with separate
power supplies for some station gear. W4TV has a list of recommendations
for that based on the Microham boxes. He's focusing on ground hum and
such, but the principle applies to your situation as well. If you
understand the why for W4TV's stuff, you will see how to prevent
recurrence of your case.

"I finally got around to installing my 700 Hz CW roofing filter"

Just to clarify, Chuck is referring to a 700 Hz filter from the 2010 batch,

the current batch which is due to arrive in a couple of weeks. There are
still 2 filters
available for immediate purchase from this batch, plus a few extras that we
will be
retaining temporarily for "shrinkage".

After that, a next batch wouldn't arrive until mid- to late-September, and
that's
provided there's sufficient demand for another production run.

On 12-05-15 10:46 AM, VE3GNO Daniel wrote:
> I am wondering how they get FCC certification? I would advise to return

Some years back I was working for a company that had an RF based hand-held
real-time data collection system used in focus groups. The hand-held devices
and the base station both had type approval for use in Canada and the US.
After using the devices for a few years the company wanted to use the
devices in the UK so the units were submitted for UK type approval.

Both base station and hand-held failed the approval process.

The hand-held transmitted in the 49MHz band using a 16.6xx MHz crystal
running in third overtone (ie. 16.6xx times 3 = ~49MHz). It failed because
of emissions exceeding allowed limits for the 900MHz(!) band.

As soon as I connected the spectrum analyzer I saw spurs every 16.6xx MHz in
to the GHz range. The person that designed it must never have used an SA or
they shouldn't have let it get past the prototype stage. Fortunately I found
a simple solution. I changed the 7404 used in the crystal oscillator with a
74U04 (unbuffered) and all the spurs dropped in strength from being equal to
the fundamental to barely measurable. The hand-held passed on the second
submission for UK approval.

This made me realize that FCC type approval doesn't mean a lot as a unit can
still put out a lot of of unwanted RF emissions and simple circuit changes
can often clean up a design if someone cares at all. The FCC type approval
process is nowhere near as strict as it should be but it is still better
than not having an approval process at all.

The one noise source I have at home is the high efficiency furnace that
creates a tremendous amount of broadband RF noise when it goes in to a
heating cycle during the winter months. I'm sure it was type approved too. :-P

[Elecraft] New K3 Firmware: Improved AGC (great for pile-upsaswell as general operation)

2012-05-15 Thread Chuck Guenther
I'd like to add my applause and thanks to Elecraft for this latest
firmware upgrade.

In addition to the new firmware, I finally got around to installing my
700 Hz CW roofing filter.
The combination of extra wide filtering and higher AGC thresholds is
great for combing
through the pileups with VFO "B," while using the narrower filters on
the DX frequency.

I take pride in doing my own "CW skimming!"

Re: [Elecraft] Spurs on 15m from new laptop

2012-05-15 Thread Thomas Horsten
Hi Barry,

You might want to try a different HDMI cable with better shielding, like
this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Quad-Shielded-High-Speed-Cable/dp/B002C1BHIO

I haven't tried it myself but they claim it's "quad shielded".. But it
could also be the monitor's HDMI decoding circuit creating the spurs in
which case it probably won't help. Try moving the cable around?

Re: [Elecraft] Spurs on 15m from new laptop

2012-05-15 Thread Barry
OK. Just found the problem. It's monitor-related.

Same monitor (HP 2311x) as used with last 'puter with no problems. Only
difference is this computer uses an HDMI cable. Last computer used an SVGA
cable.

When I unplug the HDMI cable, noise stops. I'll wrap the HDMI cable with
some firrits. If that doesn't work, Think I'll pick up an HDMI to VGA
adaptor and see if that fixes it. Any other thoughts?

Tnx,

[Elecraft] Weird Ticking QRM

2012-05-15 Thread Jim Sheldon
Shortly after loading the latest version (4.51) I was occasionally getting a
continuous tick-tick-tick signal on the higher bands that was very annoying.
It also showed on the P3 as a very low amplitude, approximately 2 per second
swept line (on the waterfall). It disappeared with the antenna disconnected.
Thinking it was my new laptop, I shut that off to no avail. This had been
going on for several days now, and I was almost ready to tear what's left of my
hair out. The power company had installed one of those new "smart" radio
controlled meters on a neighbor's house (I refuse to let them change mine out)
and I suspected that too, but this morning I FINALLY found it! Turns out that
4.51 firmware was not the problem at all!

I have a Black & Decker 18 volt battery drill that I use almost every day for
some sort of project and I have been working on installing a new Yaesu 7900

[Elecraft] FW 4.51 CWT ( Another Perspective)

2012-05-15 Thread Toby Pennington
All you have to do to get good CWT copy is to turn the CWT Threshold to about
7.

I get good copy with CWT with the NB on of off at this setting.

I have the AGC threshold set to 14 and the SLP set to 000.

I have run the SLP up to a setting of 10 and still get good CWT print.

I am not sure we have a problem with CWT at all. Just the right setting of CWT
threshold.

As far as the Auto Notch is concerned, I like the present reiteration of the
Auto Notch.. It might be a second slower in notching, but it does notch. The
reason I like it that it does work at my settings, and is not as aggressive
which means less distortion of the receive audio when engaged. Less of the
hollow sound or watery sound when engaged.

>From my perspective, I don't see the need for changes.

But understand others points of view.

Toby W4CAK

So, I actually liek the less agressive auto notch.

Re: [Elecraft] FW4.51 CWT

2012-05-15 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

Further to my first post:

Re installed 4.48. 500Hz filter, XG1 on antenna port 1 (OFF), ATT ON,
THR 8, SLP 6, AGC-F, RF gain Fully CW.

The CWT indicator bar was visible and flickering on noise(?) always to
the right of centre mark by 2 scale marks.

Switched on the XG1 1uV, S-meter to S3, CWT locked and tracks -141Hz to
+133Hz. The CWT bar reaches both ends of the CWT tuning scale and
starts to flicker when the signal as measured by K3 dBV shows a drop of
-2 to -2.6 On tune AFV measures 55. With XG1 OFF AFV measures 7.

Re installed 4.51. No other changes.

The CWT indicator bar not showing.

Switched on XG1 1uV, S-meter to S3, CWT locked and tracks -72Hz to
+100Hz. At the LF end the CWT marker only reaches -3 CWT scale marks
before flickering. At the HF end the CWT marker reaches +5 scale marks
which is end of scale before flickering. Signal level 0.0dBV and
-1.3dBV respectively. On tune AFV measures 55. With XG1 OFF AFV
measures 7. Same as with 4.48.

So without a doubt on my K3 #345 there is a significant change in CWT
behaviour between firmware 4.48 and 4.51. Whilst I don't doubt Lyle's
measurement of CWT tracking at -132dBm it nevertheless failed to solidly
hold a signal I was monitoring on 40m which was 1 S-unit above an S2
noise level.

Is this significant, does it matter if the CWT bar doesn't display until
it has a signal to lock onto? Personally I find it useful that the CWT
bar shows as in 4.48 (as I believe it always has) because it gives an
indication that the CWT function is working.

Oddly the latest CWT mode is pretty much the same as the add on spot
display on my K2 where I adjusted the audio input level to reduce the
amount of flickering on noise. Why do I like one and not the other? No
idea, funny old world.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

Re: [Elecraft] Help Please KIO2 L4 Burnt Out

2012-05-15 Thread VK1OO
Hi Guy,

Thought I would let you (and the reflector lurkers) know the problem is
solved, but I'm not sure how.
Not a connector issue - I did one of the mods a while back to prevent that.
I did check each of the power leads to the K2, KPA100 etc, but found no
faults. Subsequently measured the current through the L4 vias as as
0.4mA. So perhaps checking each cable scared the fault away. I inserted
a new L4 and monitored the current for a few days with no observed
issues. Put the trusty K2 back together and no problems since. So,
what's the best way to prevent a recurrence of this problem?

[Elecraft] Audio quality degradation using the ANF

2012-05-15 Thread Bill
I generally only use the ANF when it is needed. I do not run it all the
time. The reason I do not run the ANF all the time is a slight
degradation of the quality of the SSB received audio when it is engaged.
Although it does not interfere with the intelligibility of the audio -
it does introduce a fuzzy aspect to otherwise armchair copy.

Of note: On my Kenwood TS-480, I leave the ANF (Beat Cancel in Kenwood
speak) on at all times. It does its job as well as the K3 - and is
without the degradation factor.

Any suggestions regarding the use of the ANF that I would benefit from?

Thanks,

Bill W2BLC

Adrian.

The 13 kHz filter can be used for AM receive and the effect is quite nice,
but if you want t transmit AM you must have the 6 MHz filter installed.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AM receive question

2012-05-15 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Yes, you can "trick" the K3 into using the FM filter for AM and ESSB
by calling it a 6 KHz filter. However, you must set it back to FM
to transmit FM. In addition, it is difficult to use the K3 Utility
to do so since the K3 utility objects to setting AM transmit without
a 6 KHz filter (won't take either 13 or 2.8) or FM without the FM
filter (won't take 6).

I'm away from the rig and can't double check the latest K3 Utility.
