Jon LA4RT After you set the rf gain on the subreceiver to get a decent balance between the two receivers, you will find that the second receiver often allows you to hear a station in the second rx that is temporarily unreadable in the main receiver due to qsb. Also, in crowded band conditions the different stations within the receiver passband will arrive with varying polarizations, and you can hear them spatially separated like orchestra instruments on a stereo sound stage. This is helpful both for ssb and cw. Sometimes it can even help with multiple cw signals on the exact same frequency. 73, Erik K7TV Your second antenna does NOT need to be resonant to receive, either by itself or with another in diversity mode. My receive antenna is seasonal so I have employed antennas for other bands for receive when it is not up. While a non resonant will not present as strong a signal, it also will not present as strong a noise. The S/N ratio is unchanged but the human ear seems to hear better when the noise is reduced. Re: [Elecraft] Diversity receive w/o dedicated receive antenna
In a word, no. The internal rewiring only controls where the subRX gets its auxiliary antenna input from (BNC RX-only port or ANT2 on the KAT3). Either one will work in diversity receive, provided you connect your second antenna to the correct connector. For DX pileups, you would normally use the subRX's primary antenna input, i.e. the same antenna as your main RX. You switch between the primary input (for DXing) and the secondary input (for diversity) by HOLDing the RX ANT button. 73, Rich VE3KI LA3ZA wrote: This is an interesting idea. Re: [Elecraft] K2 CAT Command Question
Tom, Sorry about the rig type error. I have not tried accessing the K2 with K3 Utility, but I do not think it will work. I would suggest using a terminal application rather than HRD. for those menu changes. Slowing the rate at which HRD polls the radio would be a good thing - HRD really pounds the radio hard with polling commands, so get it out of the way and use something else to manipulate the menus. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/4/2012 7:52 AM, Tom Z wrote: Don, This is a K2, not a K3. [Elecraft] Diversity receive w/o dedicated receive antenna
Jon, My antennas are quite close together and I find that the difference in polarization is enough to avoid overload. (My verticals are truly vertical though, not sloping wires.) I usually run just 100W. When I turn on the 1500w amp, it has its own relays clattering rather loudly (vacuum relay for qsk). Your comment makes me think I should verify that the rx protection relay isn't activated; if it is then I might not have noticed. In any case, when running barefoot, I would have noticed, and never did, whether at home or at Field Day. As I mentioned earlier, the antenna I use for the 2nd rx is often not dimensioned or tuned for the band in use. However, sometimes it is, and I never had the problem. Since there is plenty of receive gain, I would suggest you try a simple resistive attenuator between the 2nd rx antenna and the radio. Obviously, in that situation it would be better to use the AUX input than ANT2, so you can't transmit into the attenuator. You could also consider a dedicated antenna for the 2nd rx which is so dimensioned that it is not too efficient on any band. I like to have my main antenna be horizontal and the subreceiver antenna vertical. The horizontal antenna (a beam at home) is good for dx at low elevation angles. The subreceiver antenna is mounted lower, but as a vertical antenna it can somewhat make up for the lower height by the low-angle advantage that stems from its vertical polarization. I'll admit though that sometimes a dx station may be inaudible on the vertical. For moderate distances, every station tends to be easy to copy on both antennas. At the home qth where the vertical competes with the beam, I generally have to crank up the RF gain a lot higher for the subreceiver vertical than for the main receiver/beam. At FD, the untuned vertical competes with a not-very-high dipole, and I end up with the RF gain at about the same setting for both receivers. Erik K7TV Probably true. But I very rarely have enough isolation between my antennas. So if I try diversity, the front end protection relays start buzzing when I transmit. The consensus seems to be that you shouldn't rely on the relays. The main antenna is simply disconnected while transmitting. Why isn't the sub-rx antenna? You're absolutely right, as long as I can't use diversity, dual watch would help me just as much as having a sub-rx does. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - panadapter or subreceiver
I have both. The P3 gets used all the time, especially for evaluating band activity. Super helpful for watching 6M and seeing when the beacons are coming in. With thr wide spectrum (200KHz) I can watch 50.000 through 50.200 basically capturing the beacons, CW segment, calling frequency, and all the action that may be spread out upwards on SSB. 6M is mostly a be there when it happens band, so seeing the spectrum makes it much easier to be there when it happens. I use the 2nd RX mostly for monitoring 50.125 or (with a external transverters) a chosen VHF calling frequency. I tune around the HF bands or other VHF bands on the primary RX while monitoring 6M on the 2nd RX. Ihave a slight modification to my K3 antenna input wiring and the presets are all setup to make it easy for me to swap primary and secondary RX quickly. For example talk on 2M via transverter and monitor 6M on 2nd RX with the 6M beam, hit band down button and now talking on 6M while monitoring on 2M or other VHF band (I have 144, 222, 432, 903, and 1296 here). Antennas are awapped/remembered/selected automatically. I play HF when the VHF bands are silent, but I am always watching the VHF bands. So the P3 first, 2nd next mostly for monitoring different bands with their dedicated antennas. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-panadapter-or-subreceiver-tp7558492p7558618.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Diversity receive - Getting feet wet!
Hi Gang: Happy 4th!! Just recently, I connected a 5BTV Hustler vertical to the Aux input on my K3. I have an Array solutions receive front end protector in line connected with BNC connections. I am being cautious about applied power to my beam, (Force 12 C3SS at 45 Feet and about 100 feet from the vertical). I don't yet trust the Front end protector 100% but as time goes by I probably will. I do notice the effect of the audio being or seeming to move around in my head. Very interesting. I haven't tried working split and I see that there are some manipulations that I have to do to get that done. I plan to go long wire at some point or some other form of listening antenna. I am curious about the experiences that others have had. Bring it on!! Re: [Elecraft] KX3 interal battery charger
(resent because the list rejected PGP-signed mail) In balance vs equalize, I also hear about equalization charge to 12V SLA batteries without access to individual cells. PbAcid cells have a higher charge/discharge marginal ratio as they get full, so a mild overcharge should tend to cause all cells to be fully charged. NiMH is almost certainly similar, especially during low-rate overcharge as is typical, so I'd expect that all cells end up full. To understand the KXBC3 behavior, it seems that one should use a Maha C9000 or equivalent to measure/record the capacity (refresh/analyze) of all the cells, and then put then in the KX3 and use them for a while, and then when the KX3 says they are charged pull them and do a discharge measurement followed by a refresh/analyze. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
Don, If you are only interested in CW, why are you including the KDVR3? All the rest sounds OK. One suggestion that I would offer (because you are not ordering the KRX3 immediately) is to wait on your filters and go with only the stock 2.7 kHz filter for now. Once you have determined what filtering widths work best for your operating style, then you can order the needed filter widths for both your main receiver and the future SubRX. The DSP filters set the ultimate brick wall filter width. The roofing filters protect from Hardware AGC pumping from signals in the roofing filter (2.7 kHz) passband which may not be heard unless you widen the DSP filter. So if your initial operation is not heavily oriented to contesting or DX pileups, you will be able to make better filter choices after you become accustomed to the K3. The only other thing you may want to consider is the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz SSB roofing filter. If you think you will in the future want to use diversity reception for SSB, go with the 2.8 MHz filter because it reportedly has zero offset - meaning a future filter purchased should match it. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/4/2012 7:36 PM, Don KB1YBG wrote: I'm about to place order for k3 kit. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
Hi Don, You don't need the KDVR3 for CW. The memory buttons work for CW without this option. You might want to consider the KXV3A if you plan to use a separate receive antenna or if you plan to add a P3 someday. I have 400Hz and 200Hz filters. For CW I usually have my bandwidth set at 200Hz or lower. I use my 400Hz filter for RTTY where my bandwidth is usually 350Hz or 400Hz. You may want to consider just the 200Hz or 250Hz filter and buy another filter later if your operating style warrants it. The same argument can be used for buying only the 400Hz or 500Hz filter for CW and getting a narrower filter later. If money is not an issue buy both. I also have the 1000Hz filter and never find myself operating with a bandwidth in the 400Hz to 1000Hz range. One day I'll pull it out and sell it. Had I used my own advice I could have saved some money. 73, Mike K2MK Don KB1YBG wrote I'm about to place order for k3 kit. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
I too am CW only, have had a K2 for years, and when I went for the K3, went through the usual which filter questions. I come from a 250/500 Hz background (mostly Ten-Tecs). I opted for 200 and 400 Hz along with the stock 2.7 kHz. My thinking was that I wanted each filter to have, more or less, a dedicated purpose, in the interest of simplicity. 2.7k: tuning around, casual listening, not engaged in QSO, not listening to a specific QSO 400: listening to a specific QSO or engaged in one 200: engaged in a QSO and interference occurs or I need to pull weak signal out I was pretty certain that 400 was something I wanted, so the real problem was whether to get 200 or 250. I opted for 200 because 250 seemed too close and I figured that if you need to kick in the 200, you really NEED narrow. I have zero regrets about the setup and will likely never consider another for my style of CW ops. Nice knowing it's done and I can focus on the QSOs instead of the filter choices. My only concern about the 200 was that it's so narrow that I might hear ringing or some other undesirable characteristics. I find this to be 100%, without a doubt, false. The 200 on the K3 performs better than any 250 I've tried on other rigs (admittedly, all Ten-Tecs plus an IC-706MkIIG) My 2 cents. --Andrew, NV1B .. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
Hi All, Thanks for all the great info. Just what I was looking for. As suggested I'll scrap the dvr and add the KXV3A. Who knows, I may add a P3 someday but would like to put up a receive antenna soon. I have it on the K2 but have not used it. As for filters, I think I'll go with the 8-pole 400 and upgrade the 2.7 to the 2.8. It is my understanding that the 8-poles have zero offset and thus I can add these to the sub in the future without matching issues. I still have to study all the info you've provided but sounds great. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
Don... Seems like all of us who contemplate buying a K3 go through the filter agonies. I ended up with the 2.8/8-pole, 1.9/8-pole, 500/8-pole from Inrad, and 200/5-pole. I am almost totally a cw type, using ssb only for dx that isn't on cw. While not operating ssb much, I wanted a filter arrangement for that mode that would be ever lasting. For cw, the 250 and 400 from Elecraft seemed too close together to really be different. I remember the 500cps mechanical filters from Collins, so that's always been my standard for cw. Then, for tight work, the 200 seemed nice. As Don says elsewhere, the dsp sets the ultimate bandwidth, while the filters protect the door. That said, I wanted filters that would provide the same long-term satisfaction as with the ssb filters. I've operated more ssb than ever in the past because the K3 does such a good job on receiving ssb. As it stands, the K3 here is set for the future with no looking back. ...robert On 7/5/2012 00:36, Don KB1YBG wrote: I'm about to place order for k3 kit. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
My filter recommendation is 8-pole (zero offset issues) 250hz and 2.8 8-pole for the same reason. I set my filter BW in the config to the actual BW of around 350hz. I operate 99% CW. With the subRX and the P3 I find I use the P3 for the big picture on pileups and to estimate the working pattern of the DX. I crank the main down to focus on the DX to around 200hz and use 350hz on the sub to ID and verify the station being worked. I'm pretty successful in putting my signal right in the DX ops path within one or two tries. That assumes the OP is working a pattern. Sometimes they appear to be just spinning the dial... I worked 1A0C on 40 thru 17 CW with 100w and modest antennas using this approach in the last few days. I have a 1Khz filter in the main that I'll remove the next time I have the rig open. Haven't found a use for it. I'll probably sell it and use the proceeds for a FM filter to play on 6m. I have a subRX in with the same two filters in case I get around to do diversity which is likely this fall. I really like my K3! 73 jim ab3cv __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The 2.7 is wide enough than one can split the difference in order to maintain phase lock in diversity. If one absolutely needs better skirt performance in a wider filter, adding the 1.8 KHz provides added flexibility at very little added cost (replacing 2.7 with 2.8 is $129.95, purchasing the 1.8 or 2.8 outright is only 139.95!). 73, ...
