[Elecraft] KX3 KXBC3 Error Code

2012-10-14 Thread Reed
Maybe that is why mine isn't working, I didn't install the spacer and lock
washer..just kidding. I did notice there is no resistor at R14, just 2 solder
pads.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q to soundcard isolation

2012-10-14 Thread Giampiero Raschetti
I do connect KX3 I&Q directly into my MacBookPro stereo in-line without any
additional isolation too and it works great without any problem at all running
under a parallels desktop virtual machine.
Is there any special reason to isolate this line ?

I run the signalink with my K2. Works great. Psk31 and cw. I am going to

use my hp mini, signalink and K2 off of wind turbine and solar on my

[Elecraft] Tigertronics SignalLinkUSB connections to K2

2012-10-14 Thread Chris Kimball
The Tigertronics SignalLink looks like a reasonable way to add digital modes
to my K2 SN 4913. I have a KAT100/KPA100 connected through the RS232
connector.

What's the experience on the SignalLink for the K2? Is it currently a good
way to go?

If I went with a SignalLink, can I make the necessary connections to only
the Mic jack and an audio out jack, i.e, a modified speaker out jack?

Thanks for your ideas.

Wow, per-band alignment?

Is this for the RX sideband gain/phase nullification? I did that when
connecting my KXFL3 (purchased separately, so required to do). However,
I only did it using the rather cool little white wire "antenna" loop
included by Elecraft with the KXFL3, which sniffs the 16MHz clock of the
board, using that as a signal source. If per-band alignment is now
possible to do, what are the recommendations for using other frequencies
besides 16MHz? This will be difficult for me, because I don't have a
signal generator that can create an artificial "known good" signal for
any other bands.

Thank you!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 headphone audio

2012-10-14 Thread Dale Boresz
Jerry,

Just a suggestion for headphone usage in general -- regardless of the
equipment into which they are being plugged: Never plug headphones into
any device, while they are in place over your ears. I use headphones
extensively here, for both ham radio and general music listening, and I
learned my lesson many years ago. I always plug them into the source
device while they are resting on the table top or around my neck resting
on my shoulders. If the source volume is way too loud, you'll find out
well before it becomes startling/painful to your ears. None of this is
probably news to you -- just a reminder ;-)

[Elecraft] K3 - TX while tuning

2012-10-14 Thread Fred Jensen
I had the K3 [#642] off [including the PS] while at Pacificon. I was
going to give a generally useless try at ECN on 20 at 2200Z, and after
turning everything on, as I tuned up to 14050, the TX LED flashed. No
knob movement, nothing. Knob movement, it flashed fast, faster if I
turned the knob faster.

Got to 14050, went to TUNE, and adjusted the antenna tuner for 1:1 SWR,
and all is well. Have moved around on different bands since, and all is
well.

This has never happened before ... turn the "Big Knob" and radio goes
into TX, seemingly at about the pulse rate of the encoder as I'm turning
the knob.

ECN didn't work, Kevin was unreadable on 20. Last year, we had a lot of
summer Es on 20 and he was very readable. This summer, NIL.

[Elecraft] batteries for the KXBC3

2012-10-14 Thread Mike Weir

Good evening all, now that the KXBC3 charger is shipping and we all are
awaiting it's arrival!! I have been doing some research online for some NiMH
batteries I came across and ordered the Ansmann 2850 mAh AA batteries. These
batteries are from Germany and offer a 2 year warranty. Unlike some of the
Chinese NiMH batteries that offer over the top mAh ratings these truely are
2850 mAh. I have no connection with the Ansmann company but check it out for
yourself the reviews, the cost is 20.00 for a pack of 4 but from what I have
seen they are well worth the $$.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Finals - Chronic Blow-Outs

2012-10-14 Thread R Thompson
When I read this today it reminded me of a problem that I had with my
TenTec 6M transverter. Sometime after TenTec ceased production of that
kit, they did another run of them. I picked up one from the last
production run, and it performed as advertised. Then out of nowhere the
finals failed for no understandable reason. After taking a close look
at what remained of the factory supplied finals, 2SC1969's, and checking
it out on the internet, I now think the kit came with bogus (fake) final
transistors.

I wouldn't begin to suggest this if you hadn't said that it appears
that the finals were replaced before you got the radio.

Here is a link I found on the subject:

http://www.4hamradio.com/counterfeit-mitsubishi-2sc19692sc2312-transistor-test/

Eventually I did find some, well I think they're close enough to the
real thing, they work and they take a lot less drive than the old ones
did to get the desired output. I would strongly suggest, if you're not
already doing this, that you get replacements from Elecraft and not off
of an auction site.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Headphone audio.

2012-10-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
I also use the Yamaha CM-500 headset, and a pair of RS Optimus speakers
that I found in a 2nd hand store. No problem between the two. If you
are using inefficient speakers, then I can understand your problem, but
OTOH, there is an AF gain control that you can easily use when switching
from speakers to headphones. The K3 cannot be "automatic" to all users
choices of speaker response and headphone sensitivity.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q to soundcard isolation

2012-10-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jeff,

I have used transformers salvaged from computer modem cards and I have
used Xicon P/N 42TL016-R - Mouser PN 42TLC16-RC with success.

Yes, there is some falloff in the response if you try to use 192 kHz
display width, but then there is some falloff in the KX3 I/Q outputs for
that width anyway. 96 kHz is more practical with the KX3.

I mount my transformers in an Altiods tin and have a 3.5mm jack on each
end of the cables exiting the Altiods box. One end goes to the
soundcard and the other end goes to a 2.5 to 3.5 mm converter cable that
plugs into the KX3.

Mike,

I do not know for certain, but I suspect Eric has set up an email
account for kx3supp...@electaft.com. Give it a try. If it bounces, you
will know within minutes, and then you can just resend to
supp...@elecraft.com.

All the support email goes to similar persons, so it is just a courtesy
to give the person answering the email advance information about the
transceiver you are inquiring about.

Use KX3 in the subject line. That is required to sort your issue for the
KX3. If you acquire different Elecraft equipment use that equipment ID in
the subject. It is as easy as that. You can also filter your email based
on subject. There are no individual lists. The KX3 Yahoo is not an
Elecraft reflector. Out of courtesy some of the engineers monitor it.

Absolutely not. I use "small" unamplified "bookshelf" speakers
and the Yamaha CM-500. I have no issues of "imbalance" between
headphone and speaker levels. The only thing I wish is that the
monitor level would automatically go to zero in SSB/AM/FM only

I hate to belabor this rather minor issue but since there have been a couple
"I don't get it" responses, here's why you haven't noticed it:

Speakers vary widely in their drive requirements. If you have speakers that
match your phones, lucky you. Mine don't. I use a set of bookshelf size hi
fi speakers that take many dB more drive than my phones.

It's not so bad having to turn the volume down but the monitor, since it
(rightly, IMO) does not adjust with the volume, also needs to go down. This
is a minor pain when you don't realize until you've already started
transmitting that you forgot to change it.

Another issue is that Speakers + Phones mode won't work well. If you're
comfortable with the phones, your guests can barely hear the speakers.

I very seldom use speakers any more.

[Elecraft] K3 RS232 Query

2012-10-14 Thread john petters
Hi folks,
I made up a serial lead today to run from a window 2k computer which has
a serial port. I've been using a Prolific USB / RS232 converter, which
is very noisy. This, however connects to the K3 using HRD software and
works correctly.
The lead I made up uses 3 wires as the K3 manual suggests. There is no
crossover. HRD will not see the K3.
I tested the lead by connecting the USB converter to it and it worked
perfectly with the new lead - so I don't think my lead is the problem. I
tried all the available com ports (the USB lead works on Com 8) the
RS232 should be on Com 1 or Com 2. Any suggestions?

As another poster has suggested ...

The situation may relate to the type / impedance of the speakers being
driven by the K3. In my case ... where there's no apparent imbalance ...
I'm using a set of COMspkrs from West Mountain Radio ... fine units,
BTW, and totally free of RFI, even when setting beside my THP KW.

[Elecraft] KXBC3 install ?

2012-10-14 Thread Mark Hogan
The 2-56 screw that I took off the battery retainer, is that the same screw
I use to hold in th KXBC3 and do I reuse that spacer? If not I must have
the wrong screw in my parts kit. I have two 4-40 by 3/16 and a very tiny
3/16 pan head that does not screw into anything.

Yes, it's normal, due to the direct conversion architecture of the KX3. Turn
on the KX3's RX isolation preamp to minimize this.

[Elecraft] KX3 "spurious" signals on my K3/P3 ??

2012-10-14 Thread Phil Hystad
So, just now (this morning) using the KX3 and learning all about it. I have my
KX3 sitting on my desk and the antenna hooked up to my 80-meter dipole. My K3
is on and hooked up to my Hex-beam.

So, while tuning the KX3 I can see a peaked signal moving across the P3 display
hooked to my K3. It seems that the KX3 is generating a signal right on the VFO
frequency that is pretty strong. But, it is in the K3 too since it strongly
interferes with the signals on the K3.

Is this normal behavior? It does not seem like normal behavior? So far, I
have only checked the 20-meter band.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question

2012-10-14 Thread Phil Hystad
Joel,

Thanks for the clarifying comment below. I remember reading the errata and
marking up my documents with changes but I totally briefed over the part
about the change to calibration (you noted below) and then forgot about it.

This was done in the rush to process all the errata sheets to get required
changes written into the manuals and my main focus at the time were
changes to installation and assembly, not to other stuff. Oh, well, my
fault for doing this late on Wednesday night when I should have been
in bed asleep.

First, my page 32 in my owner's manual DOES NOT have a section called
CALIBRATION. That is the top of page 31. And, right under that there is
 this statement:

"Most calibration steps are performed at the factory for both kit and

KX3 kit assembly, or install one in a factory assembled KX3 after initial

So, is this what you are referring to because it seems to suggest that
there still is a calibration procedure associated with the KXFL3.

Thanks for any additional help and clarity you can provide. By the way,
my owner's manual is Revision B4, June 1, 2012 which is the same as
currently available as "the latest" on the Elecraft web site.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Headphone audio.

2012-10-14 Thread Carl Clawson

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Finals - Chronic Blow-Outs

2012-10-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ray,

There is one more thing to check. Use an external wattmeter and a dummy
load - check to be certain the actual output power is somewhere near
what the K2 indicates on the display during a TUNE.

If the displayed power is nowhere close to the actual power, then you
need to fix the power measuring circuit - for the base K2, that is D9,
R66, R67, R68, R69 and C77. If you have the KAT2 or the KPA100 or
KAT100, then the wattmeter in those options may not be working correctly.

One other thing I might mention - are you operating the K2 into a high
SWR load? If so, the voltages in the PA stage may be excessively high
causing failure of the finals.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - receive audio when using the ANF
To:

I use my K3 mostly for SSB rag chew, for that reason I use the ANF
(automatic notch filter) often. The ANF does eliminate interfering
hetrodynes and carriers very well, however, it introduces a garbling
effect to the SSB received audio. It is tolerable, but surely causes a
noticeable and disappointing receive audio quality reduction.

I have other rigs with ANF and even a couple of old ANF boxes - all of
which do a good job eliminating the interfering signals - generally as
well as the K3's ANF. However, only the K3 introduces artifacts or
garbling to the receive audio.

I have been told by Elecraft, "They (other manufacturers) are no doubt
using a different algorithm. Lyle has said he will look into this when
he gets a chance."

Not being able to leave the ANF engaged all of the time, as I do with
other rigs, has reduced the pleasure of using my K3. In the interim of
Lyle looking into this, has anyone found settings that workaround this
problem?

Thanks,

Bill W2BLC

I would advocate using two coax relays and connect the KX3 to a dummy

Yes, the Owner's Manual does tell you that, Jon. However, Errata A2-2
dated July 5, 2012 states:

"MAKE THESE CHANGES TO YOUR MANUAL BEFORE BEGINNING ASSEMBLY...

2. Page 2, Setup and Operation: Change the second bullet point to read
as follows:

Turn to page 4 to calibrate the KXFL3 if you purchased it
*separately* (emphasis mine) from the KX3 *or* (emphasis mine) are
installing the KXFL3 in a different KX3. KXFL3 modules *shipped*
(emphasis mine) with either a factory assembled KX3 or a kit KX3 have
been factory calibrated."

Can you do the calibration? Yes. The procedure is there and the tools
necessary to do it are included. *Must* you do the calibration? No. I
cannot see how you would go wrong either way. I did *not* do the
calibration on mine and have been happy with it. Some folks may want to
do it anyway. It's a choice, not a mandate.

I tried scanning the document I have, but the scan didn't turn out

I have not noticed this problem with my setup. I have the headset plugged in
the back. I do have a inline volume control built in to the headset but I think
I keep at full volume most of the time to drown out the external speaker.

My only thought is, do you have speakers + phones selected? If not this may
reduce the level to each.

I have seen external volume control add ons. They may however be stereo 1/8"
devices.

Best of luck.

[Elecraft] KX3 Muting

2012-10-14 Thread Stuart Dunk
Hi all, can anyone give me some pointers on muting the KX3 when using it as a
receiver and transmitting with the FT 1000mp mk-v field and kpa500 combo.
I intend to use a coax relay as the isolation device!
Has anyone tried to use the KX3 and another rig in this configuration??

Cheers
