[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2012-11-03 Thread kevinr
Good Evening,
Daylight savings time ends early Sunday morning so note the new net
times. They are the same local time while the zulu time changes. 7 PM
has been a good time for forty meters lately. After it got dark around
then my check in rate increased.

Another soggy week but it has yet to frost. Hunters are out in
force this weekend. My normally deserted roads are filled with big 4WD
trucks and folks with binoculars. I am not hearing much gunfire so the
critters are under cover.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help)

Sunday 2300z (Sunday 3 PM PST) 14050 kHz
Monday 0300z (Sunday 7 PM PST) 7045 kHz

Stay well,
   Kevin. KD5ONS

David,

">" means "greater than" and infinity (very large value) may equal "open
circuit".
That means the only potential problems you have is with J1 pin 5 which
should be greater than 1 meg and you are reading 29.56k. Look for
solder bridges between pins over the entire board.

[Elecraft] K2

2012-11-03 Thread David Holton
Chasing some advice.

K2 problem, " touchy " power control pot.

Removed Front panel and carried out resistance checks of U1 and J1 as per
the manual.

U1 checks out OK.

J1 reads,

Pins 1 to 4 should read > 1M I read open circuit, no reading at all, on a
Fluke 87

Pin 5 " > 1M I read 29.56K

Pin 6 " > 50K I read 2.26M

Pin 15 to 20"All read in the middle of their
respective values and 20 is GND.

Any ideas please.

The K42 may be fixed pitch, but the KX3 is not.
Hold the pitch button and then turn the Keyer/Mic knob until the VFO B

[Elecraft] Using the K1EL K42 CW keyer with a KX3

2012-11-03 Thread w0...@juno.com
I have a KX3 and a K1EL K42 CW keyer/reader that I'm working on using together.
The only issue I'm having is in trying to get the two devices to decode at the
same place on the tuning dial. The K42 has a bandpass centered on 690 Hz and
the KX3 is slightly off of that point when you use the Spot feature. My
question is if the KX3 can be adjusted somehow to decode at 690 Hz like the K42
or is it fixed at its sweet spot too. The K42 cannot be adjusted or moved.

Re: [Elecraft] FT897D and KPA500

2012-11-03 Thread Dave Johnson
Dave, I used to have an FT857D, which is probably the same
connections. The 857 has a connection in the mini DIN socket that will
ground the keying input of a low voltage keying line of a linear, I am
not sure of the maximum voltage but 12 volts from the Acom was OK. I
used my 857 with an Acom 1000, so the same output will also key a
KPA500. I do not have the circuit to hand but it will be a
straightforward (if a bit fiddly) connection.

Beware that the FT857D and no doubt the 897D, is prone to serious ALC
problems which result in high power spikes on transmit. See
http://www.astromag.co.uk/ft857d/ for details and a "work around".

[Elecraft] FT897D and KPA500

2012-11-03 Thread David Mitchell
I am having difficulties keying my KPA500 from my Yaesu FT897D. It has no
dedicated PA Out jack. The CAT/Linear jack is currently in use transmitting
band data to the RS-232 port on my computer and I had hoped to use the ACC
jack to key the amp.

I can get a connection for ALC voltage through the tip of that stereo
connector, but the ring wants to be brought to ground to transmit. I have
a Quicksilver "Tune-Rite" that does just that and if I connect the amp PA
key and the Tune Rite using a "Y" connector the amp keys fine, but I can't
key it from the rig itself since the PA input wants to be brought to ground
to transmit.

Any creative suggestions on how to get a PA key output from my FT897 are
appreciated.

[Elecraft] KAT500 integration with K3 and KX3

Hello Elecrafters,

I have a both a K3 and a KX3. No KPA500 yet but is currently on the Christmas
list :-). Question, how tight is the integration between the K3 or KX3

the ATU controls located on the radio to control the KAT500 (initiate tunning
sequence, bring tuner online/offline, etc...)?

Hi Gary,

The front panels of the KX3 and K3 are quite different, so there can't
really be a 1-to-1 correspondence of KX3 controls mapping to K3
controls.

That said, the KX3 does have the ability to do very limited remote
control of another KX3, K3, or even a K2. This feature is presently
experimental and incomplete, but feel free to give it a try. (All
public releases of KX3 firmware have included this feature...we just
haven't said much about it yet.)

NOTE: The KX3 *does not* implement the ultrafast rig-control protocol
that is present in the K3 and K3/0. Instead, we created a moderately
fast version of the traditional "autoinfo" mechanism (AI). What this
means is that if you want the best remote-control performance, you
should control a remote K3 with another K3 or a K3/0, not a KX3.

Using the KX3 as a Controller:

First, you'll need to connect the two rigs together somehow. The
simplest method, and the one recommended for trying the remote-control
feature, is to use a "null-modem" cable. For example if you're using
two KX3s, connect their ACC1 jacks together using a 3-conductor cable
that has the tip and ring connections cross-wired. If the remote rig
is a K3 or K2, you can make a cable with a DE9 at that end and a 3.5
mm plug at the KX3 end, again cross-wiring the RXD and TXD signals.
You could also use the internet or even wiFi, with PCs or RemoteRig
boxes as intermediaries, and we'll have an app note on that at some
point.

Next, go into the menu at the KX3 intended to be used as the
controller and set AUTOINF to RIG CTRL. This puts the KX3 into a
benign, no-transmit, no-RX-audio state, and causes most control
changes to be sent to the remote radio. If the remote rig is a K3, its
sub receiver is turned OFF by the KX3, since a KX3 front panel has no
way to control the sub receiver yet.

IMPORTANT: As with RemoteRig installations, audio in/out and CW keying
are handled separately--not through the controller. That is, you can't
use the local KX3's mic, phones, or key jacks; you have to either wire
the corresponding devices to the remote rig directly, or provide
dedicated media channels for these. The RemoteRig boxes do this. You
connect the mic, key, and headphones directly to them, not to the
controlling KX3 (or K3, or K3/0). At the remote end, these signals are
then connected to the appropriate connectors on the K3 (etc.).

In a future release we might be able to send CW from the controlling
KX3 by embedding the characters in command packets, as well as allow
the use of the MSG play buttons.

At present the KX3 can control the following functions on a remote
radio:

VFO A
VFO B
Mode
AF gain
Filter BW (PBT on the KX3, WIDTH on the K3)
RIT offset
RIT clear

We hope to greatly expand this set of functions in the future. But
again, if want full control of a remote K3, you'll need another K3 or
a K3/0.

Wayne

I agree except if your main station is qrp only and you would still like
to have the functionality of a good external auto tuner, for example
more antenna switching capabilities and ability to use a external meter

The manual states that the KAT500 wants ~20 watts for reliable tuning.
It is designed for QRO power levels.

The Elecraft internal tuner handles the same range of tuning and are
more compact stations so they would be wiser choices for QRP only
stations.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 QRP Operation?

2012-11-03 Thread NZ8J
Thanks Eric, appreciate the additional info, that does give me at least
an option to be able to use it. At the present I do have higher power
available for initial tuning, but am contemplating going strictly qrp
so that option may not be available if I did depending on the rig of
choice.

I have always been impressed by the K2, K3 and KX3 internal tuners
ability to reliably tune my all band ladder line fed antenna on 160-10
meters and would like the same matching capability in an external tuner
auto tuner. Haven't had much luck in finding an external auto tuner that
would do what the Elecraft internal tuners will do.

In any event Dick suggested the T1 which is not ideal for my particular
operating situation but I may try one to see how well it would work for
a main station tuner which I suspect is outside its intended purpose.

Hi Tim,

The frequency counter in the KAT500 should work down below 5W for auto
recall of antenna and last tune memory for a frequency. If you teach
your KAT500 your antenna set up by tuning it on various frequencies
above 10W (>20W is more accurate for best autotuning) it will recall
these settings when you run QRP.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 QRP Operation?

2012-11-03 Thread Rick Bates
The manual states that the KAT500 wants ~20 watts for reliable tuning. It is
designed for QRO power levels.

The Elecraft internal tuner handles the same range of tuning and are more
compact stations so they would be wiser choices for QRP only stations.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 QRP Operation?

2012-11-03 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
Hi Tim,

The frequency counter in the KAT500 should work down below 5W for auto recall
of antenna and last tune memory for a frequency. If you teach your KAT500 your
antenna set up by tuning it on various frequencies above 10W (>20W is more
accurate for best autotuning) it will recall these settings when you run QRP.

[Elecraft] Remote Operating

2012-11-03 Thread Dyarnes
Hi All,

I've been tinkering with remote operation. It's been on my "wish list"
since I saw my first demo by Paul, W9AC, at FDIM a few years ago. He was
using his TS-480, which is a fairly easy rig to set up for remote operation.
I say "easy", but there is some complexity to it. However, it is very
intriguing.

Right now I'm using my TS-480, and I've acquired the Swedish "RemoteRig"
system to accomplish the task. This is a very nice system! It makes the
process somewhat less complex than what W9AC was using. However, what I
really have my eye on is the possibility of doing remote operation with my
K3. Obviously, the K3 is a far better radio than the TS-480, and to have
something like that available on a remote basis would be very cool indeed.

Elecraft currently has the K3/0 unit available, and I got to see it in
action when Eric came down for our Tucson Hamfest a month or so ago. Eric
was remote operating his K3 back in California, and it was very impressive
indeed. He really has a Cadillac system set up, and some great software
which allows him to control just about everything in his shack--including
his antennas and amplifier! The RemoteRig accessory package is part of the
system.

Eventually I may opt for the K3/0, but what I'm really hoping for is that
Wayne's inference that "someday" the KX3 might be a possibility to match
remotely with a K3 at your base location. I sure hope this comes to pass,
since I also have a KX3. The K3/0 is probably more capable, but it also has
more bulk. However, since the architecture of the KX3 is different from the
K3, I suspect there will still be something else required to hang on the end
of the KX3 to enable remote operation. I further assume that the RemoteRig
system (or something similar) will also be required.

Remote operating opens up a lot of doors. For me, it's potentially very
beneficial. We travel in the summer a good bit, and I can remote back to my
home station without having to drag along a lot more equipment and antenna
options. Motel stays can be a lot more enjoyable!!! Then there is the
plight of folks with deed restrictions. What if you could set up something
remotely somewhere, outside the restriction area, and have a reasonably
competent station? I'm sort of one of those too. My antennas are
definitely compromise due to deed restrictions.

I can tell you, just from what I've been able to do so far, that remote
operation has improved to where just about all modes are possible with
reasonable efficiency. I'm primarily CW, and the keying issue is pretty
effectively resolved with the RemoteRig system. I can't do QSK, and there
is a very, very slight delay, but it's nominal. It's not the "end all"
solution, but it's pretty darned good! With my TS-480 I just have to carry
the remote head, the small RemoteRig control side box (another box is
connected at the other end with the radio itself), a computer, and a small
power supply. You only need the computer to connect you to a WiFi system.
You do have to set up a "virtual private network (VPN) connection on the
computer, but once you do it once, you just activate it each time you begin
operation. No additional software is required, although you can use some if
it suits you better. It can get more complex at the base station end,
depending on what controllability features you want, like turning things on
and off, antenna control, etc. The control head functions just as it would
if you were directly connected to the rig itself. As long as the WiFi is
half way decent, you are in business! A K3 based remote system would be
pretty much the same arrangement except you substitute the K3/0 for the
TS-480 remote head.

If this peaks anyone's interest, you might want to download the manual for
the RemoteRig system. It describes how to set up a system for various
rigs, including the K3. Also, I'm sure others have considerably more
advanced setups than I have, so there may be a lot of additional info
available from this group, including corrections of anything I may have
misstated here. I'm still in the "novice" class on remote operation, but
what I've been able to do so far is pretty fascinating.

[Elecraft] KAT500 QRP Operation?

2012-11-03 Thread NZ8J
Just looked over the KAT500 manual and it appears from first glance that
it will not operate using a qrp power levels. Given the track record of
the current Elecraft tuners, I was very hopeful that it would so I could
utilize the antenna switching and superior tuning capabilities of the
Elecraft design in an automatic tuner. Maybe someone in the know can
chime in and give a definitive answer as to if it will operate reliably
using low power in the range of 3 to 4 watts. Keeping my fingers
crossed.. Hi hi :)

That opens the CONFIG:SPKR+PH menu, but doesn't change anything. And this is
one of the ones that doesn't have an MPxxx; to change the parm. But I'm sorted

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Kit Deliveries Yet ?

2012-11-03 Thread Fred Smith
Joe

I agree and I'm in the same boat with RF Concepts Alpha Amp's and their new
tuner the 4040 that was to be released last year. But finally is in the
final stages with the second round of betas in the field. They only required
a $1 deposit for a pre-order to get an initial order run but I paid for mine
in full, no regrets and they are very close now to shipping.

They found many problems along the way also and like Elecraft a small
company with quality products and ham owned. But when building an amp that
will handle 4k components and failures play a big part and they had to
custom make a lot of them.

But all in all I would rather deal with companies like Elecraft, Alpha and
others who take pride in their products/quality and strive for improvements.
I have other equipment like many others but have settled on my HF/6m rigs as
the K3's over my FTDX-5000MP and not for reasons some might guess.

I am just waiting for the KAT500's to finally be shipping in a day or 2
after you order 8-)

Well I figure it's now about a year overdue now since it was originally
announced for last Nov for expected release.

I'm not worried but I'm trying to be patient to really put the KPA500 to
proper use on the better (but tuner required) antenna.

And I'm not worried because I know that since it being released, it's
'right' now, which is the minimum standard for Elecraft. Their products are
worth the wait. [I don't drink Kool Aid but I DO support those that produce
results.]

Besides, I'm not a contester, but they are useful for bringing out more DX
to add to the log.
