Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)

2012-12-07 Thread Igor Sokolov
I think what happens is KAT500 needs few msec to determine the operating
frequency and measure SWR. There is currently no delay between PTT going
into KAT500 from the radio and PTT going out into the KPA500. These few msec
is enough for KPA500 to switch itself to fault condition.
Here programmable PTT delay in KAT500 would be very helpful. Especially so
with other makes of the amplifiers.
I have discussed it with Elecraft tech support and they say this feature is
on their to do list. Lets hope that the next firmware revision of KAT500
will have that feature implemented.

[Elecraft] [KAT500] Cabling Diagram

2012-12-07 Thread Richard Ferch

Roy,

Why are you using the figure on page 6? That is only needed if you have
an external device that controls the key line (the box at the top right
corner in the figure on p.6). If you don't have such a device, the
applicable configuration is the figure on p. 4. With only the K3, KPA500
and KAT500 you do not need to use the RCA cables at all, because PTT
control is already provided on pin 10 of the DB15 cables.

If you do have an external device that needs to have PTT control (the
box in the upper right corner of the figure on p.6), you must use the
key line interrupter in the DB15 line to allow the external device to
control PTT (see note on p.5). Without the key line interrupter, the PTT
will be switched by the DB15 cables without regard for what the external
box requires.

I am using the connections from p.4 (no RCA cables), and it is working
fine, with a couple of caveats.

First, and from your description I suspect this may be your problem:
Although I had used CONFIG:TUN PWR = 25 in the K3 with the KPA500 off in
order to "train" the KAT500 for my antennas on all frequency segments,
once I was finished the initial training process I had to set CONFIG:TUN
PWR back to NOR before using the KPA500. The reason: On some bands, TUN
PWR of 25W is too much drive for the KPA500, so if I held the XMIT
button on the K3, i.e. used TUNE on the K3 with the KPA500 in OPERATE,
the amp would trip on those bands. Make sure the TUN PWR on your K3 is
either set to NOR, or else is set lower than the lowest driving power
you use with your KPA500 on any band, in order to avoid tripping the amp
on bands that don't require high driving power.

The other caveat is to wait for a second or so after switching either
the band or Operate/Standby on the KPA500, to allow everything to
settle. If you change from standby to operate and start transmitting too
quickly, the K3 may not have had time to react to the operate/standby
signal from the KPA500 and change its power level before you start
transmitting.

You also need to have CONFIG:PWR SET on the K3 set to Per Band in order
for power control of the K3 by the KPA500 to work properly.

Rich VE3KI

Roy Morris wrote:

I have connected the cables as shown on page 6 of the KAT500 Automatic Antenna
Tuner Owner's Manual, revision B3, November 20, 2012. I am connecting the K3,
KPA500 and KAT500 using the DB15 interface cables and the two RCA (yellow end)
cables for the separate key line. This diagram shows the key line interrupter
inserted between the DB15 cable and the K3 ACC socket. I have not inserted the
key line interrupter, and the system seems to work fine. However, I DO have to
change the KPA500 from OPERATE to STANDBY when changing frequency because
leaving it in the OPERATE position may cause the amp to FAULT when I hold the
XMIT button on the K3. I believe the tuner is trying to search with high power.
I wonder if inserting my key line interrupter would prevent this. All
frequencies had been previously memorized by the KAT500. Thanks. Roy Morris

[Elecraft] K3 V4.61 CW decode broken?

2012-12-07 Thread Brian Alsop
Was checking out RTTY decode which worked fine. Decided to look at CW
decode.

Here are my observations.

Not working well here or op here inept at using it.

My perception is that it did much better in older versions. However, I
didn't use it much then.

ZL9HM was 599 @35 wpm this AM. WPM check always showing between 48 and
82 wpm. Decode with WPM check off was bunch of E's and T's. Not due to
noise.

Using 400 Hz filter in CW mode. Tried auto, both choices for speed,
auto, different thresholds. Closest to working is auto.

Similar problem with C6AKQ at 32 wpm when decoding some characters right.

Both stations generating machine generated CW.

I'm also thinking that these stations are using "contest" spacing of
characters which may be confounding. In WINKEY and N1MM the word spacing
for contest spacing is 6 dits/wordspace instead of normal 7.

Admittedly these are really short exchanges and the time to lock on is
really short. However, my guess is that these are the exact conditions
some guys are using the decoder for.

A longer rag chewing K9 at 28wpm did decode OK but was not spectacular.
Although his signal was strong, characters were dropped. He seemed to
be using normal spaced CW.

I'm wondering is "contest spacing" is confounding for the decoder.

Re: [Elecraft] Found this on Facebook this morning... KPA800??

2012-12-07 Thread wa5pok
These early amp prototypes were a real learning experience for us. Our
staff did an excellent job, and they worked very well. However, after
sizing up the costs and risks, we decided to enter the market with
something smaller (K3-size) featuring a zero-noise (linear) power supply
based on a toroidal transformer. 500-600 W seemed like an ideal target,
and there you have it: the KPA500.

I certainly wouldn't rule out other amps in the future.

The majority of my operating, contesting and DXing is at the 100 watt level
with my K3. BUT on 80 and 160 (even though I easily got WAC with 100 watts
on 160) there are times that the 1000 or 1500 watts on 160 is needed. It may
not be due to propagation but sometime ya just gotta have the smash to punch
through the other guy's noise to get that QSO. Thus I have an AL1500 on the
table that sees rare usage but its there when I need it.

I would rather have a quality Elecraft there. My 2 cents.

Sherrill,

I believe you are asking about the AGC settings. If so, know that the
settings are dependent on your local noise levels. I suggest you create
your own.
Use the information in the "Noisy K3" article on my website
(www.w3fpr.com) as a guideline.
That article was written before the AGC menu parameters were expanded,
but the principles are the same. That information will allow you to set
the parameters that best suit your local noise level and your operating
desires.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 V4.61 CW decode broken?

2012-12-07 Thread Wayne Burdick

Brian,

Virtually all other reports on this release have said the CW decoder
was working very well. I just retested this morning, too.

If you're seeing E's and T's, try using a much narrower bandwidth,
50-150 Hz, and turn on the noise blanker to reduce the level of
impulse noise. I recommend using THR 2 or 3 for most signals, and THR
1 for very weak signals. These fixed settings usually work better than
AUTO.

When there is no CW signal above the required threshold, you'll see
random characters decoded.

I thought everyone knew about 100-watt light bulbs. Back in my Novice days
about 50 years ago, it seemed that all of my other Novice friends all used
100-watt light bulbs as a dummy load for test & tune-up. And, we got used to
the idea of hearing each other in the area because we all operated with the
around the same frequency cut crystals so we often all ended up on the same
spot on 40 meters. When I was a Novice, 40 meters was the only band I worked
since those were the only crystals I had. And, I am not an old-timer. An
old-timer is always someone older than me -- Always!

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)

2012-12-07 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Make sure you are only routing the AMP keying line from the rig through
the KAT 500 to the amp. The tuner always interrupts this line when it is
tuning. This can be done either via the the AMP keying line RCA
connectors on the Rig, KAT500 and the AMP, or via the KPAK3AUX cable
connections between the K3 and KAT500 and between the KAT500 and the
KPA500 when the K3 is used.

Some customers have hooked up the AMP keying line to the amp two ways in
parallel. One correctly through the KAT500 to the amp (usually via the
KPAK3AUX cable), and the other incorrectly via a second path directly
from the Rig's Key out RCA connector directly to the amp. This second
path will nullify the KAT500's attempt to open the AMP keying line to
theMAP during tune.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)

2012-12-07 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
It should be noted that the KAT500 does not "regenerate" the PTT
signal, rather it (only) interrupts it (by opening relay contacts).
Therefore it can't really delay the initial PTT signal going to the
amp... it can only interrupt it as fast as it can, when it detects
high VSWR.

As Gary mentioned, there is newer KPA500 firmware that alleviates the
problem of hard faults when it detects high VSWR before the KAT500 has
time to interrupt the keying line, but it appears that that new KPA500
firmware has not been generally released yet.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)

2012-12-07 Thread hawley, charles j jr
So with the new firmware the KPA500 would tolerate a high VSWR for a few more
milliseconds to give the tuner time to interrupt keying?
I was thinking of ways to not send a keying line with the K3 when using "tune".
But this doesn't seem possible with the K3...I take it the PTT is used
internally in the K3 or no RF comes out.
I deal with turning the KPA to standby now anyway for the MFJ 998 tuner, so I'm
used to remembering...but am looking forward to tha KAT500...and if the KPA
doesn't mind a little non-hard fault, so much the better.

[Elecraft] Big weakness in Macro's

2012-12-07 Thread W0SD Ed Gray
IMHO there is a big need for a command that can be use to define things
back to the same state. One big rule in programming is you always set
the state of things so you are always dealing with a known starting
point. The command structure in the K3 does not permit this.

A number of things in the K3 are toggle, for example in MIC SEL 1
toggles the mic back and forth from high to low and 2 toggles for bias
on or no bias. There are a number of other instances of this in the K3.

Not having a command to define things back to the same state, lets call
it a default or reset state makes the programming commands in the K3
pretty weak IMHO.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Cabling Diagram

2012-12-07 Thread Roy Morris
Thanks to all who responded to my questions regarding tuning the KAT500 when
the KPA500 is in OPERATE mode. Changing CONFIG: TUN PWR back to NOR and
reducing K3 PWR has helped to keep the amp from tripping to STANDBY from
OPERATE when changing frequency within the same band. Occasionally the
fault light might come on, but the amp does not trip to STANDBY. Holding
the K3 TUNE button a second time will cause a click and clears the fault
condition. The KAT500 is then ready to operate.
I have removed the RCA cables and find they are not necessary in my case.
Thanks again to all for the help. Roy Morris W4WFB

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)

2012-12-07 Thread Chris Johnson
Hi Eric,

I do not have the AUX cable. As described in the video, I am only using the
RCA cable from the Flex 3000 into the KAT500 and then another cable from the
KAT500 down to the KPA500.

I am not using this with a K3 radio, which in that case, would only use the
AUX cable and no RCA Key Line.

2012-12-07 Thread ab2tc
Hello again,

I finally managed to get the B&B software to work and I am now in full
control of the box from the shack using the utility. Wonderful. I tried the
"fine tune" method to improve the SWR on some 80m frequencies, but don't
seem to able to make it work. Am I supposed to continue with uninterrupted
20W carrier when I click on the tune button again? It never seems to want to
improve the settings any.

Stop tx after the first tune. Then quickly press the tune button on the KAT500
and the immediately go back into TX. That will enter the fine tune mode.

Yes. It may still kick in the attenuator temporarily, but it shouldn't
hard-fault.

I used a MFJ-998 before I got the KAT500 too. I had the KPA500
configured to switch to standby mode on band-change, then I'd transmit
a bit to get the MFJ to tune, then put the KPA500 in Operate. I
operated the KAT500 that way at first too (during early field-test),
but since the firmware for both KAT500 and KPA500 have matured, I've
turned off the option to standby-on-band-change on the KPA500, and
have been happily QSYing around with no resulting hard faults.

Re: [Elecraft] Big weakness in Macro's

2012-12-07 Thread Matthew Zilmer
A while back, I wrote a CW functional test for the K3. In doing this, I ran
straight into the programming problems cited earlier by Ed. My solution wasn't
very innovative or elegant (not being involved in the firmware development at
all), but it was adequate and met the requirements.

After establishing comm and getting control of the K3, the I would poll the
toggle and multi-value states parameters that could be set by the program.
There was a list of 25 or so controls of this type, and I would just add new
ones as needed. The really fun part was reading back the values. I had to
dump the VFO A or VFO B displays to do it. I took my cue from Dick Dievendorf,
assuming he'd done something like this to read back the RTC time in the Set
Date and Time tab on the K3 Utility.

Having the MN and MP commands saved a lot of effort as above, but the
implementation is partial. That is not all MN parameters can be polled or set.
So displaying parameters' toggle or multi-value state is about the only way,
in the general case.

For a multi-value parameter (TEXT DEC is one I had to use a lot!), dialing
through all the values is a little cumbersome and requires as many functions
to get/set as the number of parameters that are used. OTOH, there are probably
many MN parameters that would never be used by a hosted program and I believe
that's why Wayne decided to implement the ones that were obviously needed or
perhaps only those that were requested by software developers.

At the start of the program, I'd store all the toggles and multi-value
parameters that the program could touch. When exiting back to Windows, the app
would restore these, including the initial baud rate. The idea was to leave
the K3 in the same exact state before and after.

I would guess the best argument for having a known default state is from Ed.
But executing such a command would introduce a bit of entropy, meaning the K3
would end up in a different state from what it was when the hosted program was
started. This might be ... disturbing ... to users, and disruptive to using
the K3 without having to manually restore a bunch of parameters' states.

IMHO there is a big need for a command that can be use to define things back to
the same state. One big rule in programming is you always set the state of
things so you are always dealing with a known starting point. The command
structure in the K3 does not permit this.

A number of things in the K3 are toggle, for example in MIC SEL 1 toggles the
mic back and forth from high to low and 2 toggles for bias on or no bias.
There are a number of other instances of this in the K3.

Not having a command to define things back to the same state, lets call it a
default or reset state makes the programming commands in the K3 pretty weak
IMHO.

Re: [Elecraft] Are you satisfied with your K3?

2012-12-07 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
For pure nostalga, OT's and those wondering what signals sounded like in the
50's might really enjoy this video:

I'd forgotten the delight of watching the blinking gas in an over-worked 807

I don't know that I'd say it's more fun now, but it sure is different.

Hello Chris,
Your video shows what I am experiencing also. Firmware v.1.15 seems to have
been distributed to field testers to deal with the key line problem. So far
v.1.11 is all that is available to us at this time. Roy Morris W4WFB

2012-12-07 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

Still can't manage to get any improvement doing this. Anyway, right now the
tuner is doing a great job to my G5RV on all bands except 15m and 80m. For
those bands the raw SWR is above 12:1 so is outside the design parameters
for the tuner. These are screen shots for the bands where the tuner is
finding a good match:

It's crossed my mind from time to time when tackling issues like that
how nice it would be to have an Elecraft MIB and SNMP control. Think of
all the commercial & open source software and libraries that would
instantly be available. It's always easy to daydream when you're not
doing the work... :-)

[Elecraft] K3 - spurious signal.

2012-12-07 Thread Fred Jensen
Getting started in the ARRL 10, I discovered a weakish signal on the P3
15 KHz below the VFO A cursor that moves when I tune A. Ref level is
-125dBm, signal is about -110dBm. I don't remember ever seeing it
before. 15KHz is suspicious, I don't see it on other bands. Hope all
is OK with my K3.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote operation

2012-12-07 Thread Don Wilhelm

Knut,

You might try adding or subtracting feedline at the shack end of the
feedline to bring the SWR down on those bands. I would suggest
experimenting with an antenna analyzer rather than the tuner - you will
be able to see which way to go for making improvement.

The fact is that the feedline with SWR will act as an impedance
transformer, and it will be more of a transformer on bands with high SWR
than on the bands that are better matched.

Some experimentation may be in order.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - spurious signal.

2012-12-07 Thread Fred Jensen
Perhaps it's a full moon tonight, about the only explanation I can come
up with. There were actually two of them, +/- 15KHz from where I was
tuned. They were annoying since they moved when I tuned, and made
interesting pictures on the P3 waterfall since they were strong enough.
I have never seen them before.

I'm going to do an SOHP CW in the ARRL 10, but I switched VFO's just to
see if there were any stations on phone. Came back to CW for awhile,
and then realized the spurs were gone. We'll see if they reappear
tomorrow morning.

[Elecraft] NAQCC Sprint Tuesday night!

2012-12-07 Thread NAQCC
NAQCC Sprint Tuesday night!

Our December sprint is this coming Tuesday evening local time (December 11, EST
- 8:30-10:30PM, CST - 7:30-9:30PM, MST - 6:30-8:30PM, PST - 5:30-7:30PM), which
translates as Wednesday December 12, 0130-0330Z in all cases.

I will refer you to the proper URL:

http://naqcc.info/sprint201212.html

There you will find all the details as to time, frequencies and other important
information.

Certificates: SWA (simple wire antennas) certificates by call area, VE and DX
for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers (New!). A Certificate for top score in
the GAIN antenna category.

Prizes: Too many to list!! - We're making a change in our prize drawing for
the sprints. Here's a quote from the prizes page, under the main section, on
the web site:
"Beginning with the November 2012 sprint, a winner will be notified as soon as
one is chosen. Then the first to reply gets the first choice of a prize.
Before that we went by order of sprints. In other words, the June winner had
to wait for the May winner to make his choice, etc. Now it's first response,
first choice no matter what month. That way those who take forever to answer
won't hold up those who are eager to get their prize. If someone doesn't reply
at all by the end of the following month, there will be a re-drawing to choose
a replacement winner for that sprint, and the one who didn't reply becomes
ineligible for any future drawings. For example, the June winner has until the
end of July to respond."

This is a monthly event that caters to the CW veteran, the CW newcomer,
straight key and bug fans.  All are welcome to participate (this includes QRO);
but you must use QRP power levels to compete for awards.

If you are not already a member of NAQCC... membership is FREE! Now is your
chance to join the largest QRP CW Club in the world!! We currently have 6340+
members in: All 50 States - 9 VE Provinces - 90 Countries. Just sign up on the

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 Util can't connect to serial port

2012-12-07 Thread Paul A. Thompson
I have been unable to connect to my K3 through the serial port using either
1) 9 pin RS-232 cable direct to laptop serial port or 2) USB to serial port
(FTDI) adapter on either the laptop USB port (running XP) or on the new
Windows 7 desktop machine (no serial ports, so only using the USB). My K3
is sn 2096, MCU FW is 4.39 and I just downloaded (several times) the K3
Utility from elecraft.com. When I try to connect to the port (Test Conn),
it runs through all the speeds, and won't ever find the K3. I have also
tried Hyperterm, and the only remnant of communication I get with it is when
the speed is matched up to the PC port speed (Device manager) = K3 RS-232
speed [Config menu], I see a triangle for each Q I type. Nothing
else does anything. If speed isn't matched, I don't even get that.

Any other ideas to try? The port has worked in the past. New computer +
latest HRD version since I last used the RS-232 port though, and with the
latest firmware changes, I am anxious to get things working again!! I do
have an RS-232 9 port M-F with LEDs that should help diagnose any voltage
problem with the port, I hope.

Thanks for any help you guys can lend. I did look through posts, but not
finding much applying to this situation..

73,

Paul N5PT
