Re: [Elecraft] K3-Tuning rate
Fred, You may like to do this; the Rit/Xit knob can be programmed so that when neither Rit/Xit is being used, the knob can be used for tuning. I think this is mentioned in the manual. (Not to mention the P3 cursor) I have mine so that it tunes at 100 Hz rate, and my VFO is at 1 Hz which is quickly changeable if needed. In digital modes, I use the 'spot' button for speed. [Elecraft] P3 halts?
My P3 display halts, locks up. Only way to get it back going again is to turn power on/off? The SVGA display keeps working, but nothing works on the P3, only button that works is power. It has done this on and off since I got it new but not often till today. Today it will only run for a few minutes then it halts. It did this before I added the SVGA board. I have reloaded it, did not help. It halts when nothing is happening, no transmitting or even tuning. This morning it has halted every few minutes over the last hour or so? Re: [Elecraft] External Speakers for K3
I agree with those who say it is in our and Elecreft's best interest for them to concentrate on what they do best and let others excel in their own specialty. Speakers and power supplies are in that category. Probably not a lot of Return On Investment in designing speakers. Not a lot of gain for amateurs either. [Elecraft] KX3 power jack retention
As I mentioned earlier today, the KX3's power jack is supposed to be both expoxied and soldered securely to the PC board. When this is done correctly, the connector will be very rigidly retained and should never come off. We're reviewing the manufacturing procedures and testing the current batch of boards to make sure this is the case. If your KX3's power jack is loose or breaks off for any reason, we will repair it immediately, free of charge, even if the radio is out of warranty. We will also cover shipping both ways to the closest Elecraft repair facility. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: CW decoder - minor sw request
I have recently started to have more Scandinavian CW QSOs and use the CW decoder from time to time. But in the middle of many words it just shows a big * due to a lack of some non-English characters. Would it be possible to add four characters which would cover German, Swedish, Finnish, and sort of Norwegian/Danish also, possibly other languages as well. They are: ---. = Ö (o with umlaut, two dots over o) .-.- = Ä (a with umlaut, two dots over a) .--.- = Å (a with ring) ..-- = Ü (u with umlaut, two dots over u) Hopefully, this won't take up much code space. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-CW-decoder-minor-sw-request-tp7572913.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I was fortunate to find a pair of Radio Shack Optimus speakers (5 inch black cube) at a 2nd hand store for $5. They work great with my K3. You may be able to find something similar if you shop around a bit. These are non-amplified speakers and work quite well, no worries about RF feedback or other problems that sometimes occur with amplified varieties, and the K3 has more than adequate audio to drive these high efficiency speakers. Since the K3 tailors the audio response, there is not really a need for communications speakers - the RX EQ will shape the audio to your desires, so full range speakers will work great with the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - ERR BP1, XV3, AT3, IF1
Jim, It would appear that your K3 options are not being recognized at startup - that would be some problem with the AUXBUS responses when the options are polled. If you have a saved configuration file, I would suggest doing an EEINIT (see Parameter Initialization in the manual). After the EEINIT, do a configuration restore from K3Utility. If you do not have that saved configuration file, you will have to go through the calibration steps manually and tell the K3 which options are installed after an EEINIT - all menu settings will be restored to the defaults. If the list of ERR messages includes the KPA3, that would be reason enough to explain your intermittent power out issue. If EEINIT does not fix it, an email to K3support is in order. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/22/2013 5:06 PM, Jim Miller wrote: These are intermittent. They appear at power on just before the welcome message. This only happens from power on and not during operation once going. Just wondering which is the real problem. With the extra amplification and volume controls I can set the K3 volume control for hot earphone level, yet turn down the external speaker levels. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- Walter Underwood wun...@wunderwood.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- Walter Underwood wun...@wunderwood.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 External Speakers
I need a single amplified speaker for mobile use with my KX3 and was wondering what others have found useful? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 External Speakers
An excellent alternative is to connect the headphone out of the KX3 directly to an aux input on the car stereo (or even use an FM stereo modulator at the KX3 end and tune it in on the radio). This takes advantage of the big speakers in the car, which are designed to exceed road noise. Of course if you want to play the FM radio and the KX3 at the same time you'll need a different method. 73, Wayne N6KR On Apr 22, 2013, at 8:45 PM, K7JLTextra k7jltex...@gmail.com wrote: I need a single amplified speaker for mobile use with my KX3 and was wondering what others have found useful? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - ERR BP1, XV3, AT3, IF1
Jim, These error messages point to an SPI bus communication problem, which in turn is most likely due to an intermittent connection between the front panel and RF board. Remove the screws from the top and bottom of the front panel assembly, back the assembly out about 1/8th to 1/4, then push it back in, making sure you keep all of the connector pins mated. If this makes things work again, you could have oxidation on the connector pins. I would contact Gary or Howard in customer support to see if you might need replacement connectors or just cleaning in order to fix the problem permanently. Hopefully just re-seating the panel assembly will get you on the air in the meantime. 73, Wayne N6KR On Apr 22, 2013, at 6:02 PM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Jim, It would appear that your K3 options are not being recognized at startup - that would be some problem with the AUXBUS responses when the options are polled. At first I thought it was only ERR BP1 but since I have realized that pressing the disp button also shows the others if I can do it fast enough to read them before they go away and into the welcome message. They are getting more often and mostly do not go away with power down and up again. Guess it is time to break it open. I have also been have having occasional trouble with no power out. This only happens from power on and not during operation once going. Just wondering which is the real problem. The last thing that was done and this is not recent is to remove my KIO3 bd and install the KIO3A board so I can connect my internal 2 meter module (not yet done). I don't think I had this problem before that. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I also use Optimus 7 speakers, they work better on my K3 than any other speakers used so far. Easy to get on ebay. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 lithium battery charger
What kind of Lithium Batteries? I have come to the conclusion that 4 LiFePO4 cells in series work well, as they stay between 14 and 12 Volts for most of their useful discharge, which allows full power on the KX3. They should be charged on a balancing charger at least some of the time to keep all of them at the same voltage. I did not have good luck with paralleling them, so I gave up on AAs as they have relatively low capacity and use bigger external 2.3 AH packs with 4 A123 batteries and a balance connector. and a Thunder AC680 Charger. It connects via USB to your computer and you can track the charge and the health of each cell. There are lots of good chargers and some not so good ones. This one can charge almost any kind of battery from either 12V or AC power. Note that there are lots of counterfeit batteries out there. I had to make up my own adapter cables as they don't all come with the same connectors. Spend some time researching these. I have had good and back luck with different suppliers so I can't wholeheartedly recommend anyone.
