And honestly, Tom's explanation sounds like more excuse making to me. It
isn't really hard to answer emails, and I'm pretty sure if someone is smart

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Tuning rate

2013-04-22 Thread Richard Fjeld
Fred,

You may like to do this; the Rit/Xit knob can be programmed so that when
neither Rit/Xit is being used, the knob can be used for tuning. I think this
is mentioned in the manual. (Not to mention the P3 cursor)

I have mine so that it tunes at 100 Hz rate, and my VFO is at 1 Hz which is
quickly changeable if needed. In digital modes, I use the 'spot' button for
speed.

Tuning versatility is one of the great features of the K3 and well planned.

I could use a suggestion or two on setting the VFO tuning rate. I
generally like 1Hz resolution for CW/RTTY and 10Hz for SSB. My current
  settings are:

  VFO CRS: 1.0
  VFO CTS: 400
  VFO FST: 50
  VFO IND: no
  VFO OFS: OFF

10Hz rate is fine. At 1Hz, the VFO knob is too sensitive [too many Hz
for very little movement of the knob]. In fact, all I have to do is
touch the knob to move it enough Hz to fall out of the APF bandwidth on
CW and screw up decoding on RTTY [AFSK]. I have the knob fairly loose
so I can spin it quickly. Holding FINE gives me 100Hz resolution which
  is fine.

I've played around with the various settings, but can't seem to find
what I want, so I thought I'd look for others' ideas and settings.

[Elecraft] P3 halts?

2013-04-22 Thread WM3M
My P3 display halts, locks up. Only way to get it back going again is to turn
power on/off?
The SVGA display keeps working, but nothing works on the P3, only button that
works is power.
It has done this on and off since I got it new but not often till today. Today
it will only run for a few minutes then it halts. It did this before I added
the SVGA board. I have reloaded it, did not help.
It halts when nothing is happening, no transmitting or even tuning.
This morning it has halted every few minutes over the last hour or so?
Any ideas or help is appreciated.
Thanks 73

[Elecraft] External Speakers for K3

The K3 lacks matching external speakers offering better sound than the internal
one. In the tradition of other leading manufacturers, Elecraft could even
include a power supply in the enclosure (but I would be content with just a
good sounding speaker). Any hope for this?

I agree with those who say it is in our and Elecreft's best interest for them
to concentrate on what they do best and let others excel in their own
specialty. Speakers and power supplies are in that category. Probably not a
lot of Return On Investment in designing speakers. Not a lot of gain for
amateurs either. As this is one of the recurring threads you can find plenty
of good suggestions in the archives.

[Elecraft] KX3 power jack retention

2013-04-22 Thread Wayne Burdick
As I mentioned earlier today, the KX3's power jack is supposed to be both
expoxied and soldered securely to the PC board. When this is done correctly,
the connector will be very rigidly retained and should never come off. We're
reviewing the manufacturing procedures and testing the current batch of boards
to make sure this is the case.

If your KX3's power jack is loose or breaks off for any reason, we will repair
it immediately, free of charge, even if the radio is out of warranty. We will
also cover shipping both ways to the closest Elecraft repair facility.

No need for an Elecraft speaker here.

Why talk about one speaker by the way?
I use a set of computer stereo speakers. I need two speakers for my K3

The sound is good en more than adequate. For the price I got those,
Elecraft can never compete with that. And I gues they won't.

I agree totally with Bill,

There are lots of speakers out there and it is the lack of a suitable matching
K3 line case that is the issue. A pre-punched case with standard positioned
mounting holes would be a good addition to the line up, for purchasers to add
their own speaker to. As Bill says, intelligibility is best from forward facing
speakers and a good quality 6 diameter speaker would sound great.  Just make
sure that a stereo jack is used for the rear jack socket...

I am good at speakers but do not have the capability to make a decent matching
enclosure.

Lets sow the seeds at Elecraft  for a well finished matching enclosure for
users to add in a standard speaker of their choice.

[Elecraft] KX3 USB for I/Q

2013-04-22 Thread Steve Stutman
Hi,

Is USB output of I and Q being contemplated in a future board rev?

Is it possible with firmware rev for present board?

[Elecraft] K3 - ERR BP1, XV3, AT3, IF1

2013-04-22 Thread Jim Miller
These are intermittent. They appear at power on just before the welcome
message. At first I thought it was only ERR BP1 but since I have realized
that pressing the disp button also shows the others if I can do it fast
enough to read them before they go away and into the welcome message. They
are getting more often and mostly do not go away with power down and up
again. Guess it is time to break it open.

I have also been have having occasional trouble with no power out. This
only happens from power on and not during operation once going.

Just wondering which is the real problem. The last thing that was done and
this is not recent is to remove my KIO3 bd and install the KIO3A board so
I can connect my internal 2 meter module (not yet done). I don't think I
had this problem before that.

Which of the listed errors is likely the root cause of all?

Thanks, Jim KG0KP

No; there is no USB interface in the KX3 (the KXUSB has has a
USB/Serial adapter built into the *cable*).

You can use an external USB audio interface, of course. I'm currently
using a E-MU 0202 USB. I've also used a Sound Blaster X-Fi USB, which
works OK, but has a spike in the center.

I doubt that there will ever be a USB audio interface inside the KX3...

Or any type of USB interface. Perhaps in a new rig design (K4,

There is still tons of space available in the KX3! :) I want an

I use a pair of 4.25 square Realistic, AKA Radio Shack,

Works great!

I'd rather Elecraft spend their design and development time on
something like point and click tuning for the SVGA adapter of the P3.

I don't use speakers a lot, but the best sounding ones I have ever used

[Elecraft] K3: CW decoder - minor sw request

2013-04-22 Thread Sverre Holm (LA3ZA)
I have recently started to have more Scandinavian CW QSOs and use the CW
decoder from time to time. But in the middle of many words it just shows a
big * due to a lack of some non-English characters.

Would it be possible to add four characters which would cover German,
Swedish, Finnish, and sort of Norwegian/Danish also, possibly other
languages as well. They are:

---. = Ö (o with umlaut, two dots over o)
.-.- = Ä (a with umlaut, two dots over a)
.--.- = Å (a with ring)
..-- = Ü (u with umlaut, two dots over u)

Hopefully, this won't take up much code space.

If you search the archives for this list, either Wayne or Eric use and
recommend the Chill Pill speakers. They are intended for use with iPods.
I can't see Elecraft wasting their development time on a product that is

I could see a matching enclosure for a speaker and power supply, like
Drake did with the MS-4 and AC-4.

I too have used the 2-way radio speakers for more than 30 years and
originally did with my K3. But after going thru the junk stach again a
discovered I had a pair of amplified speakers (not cheap) used with Radio
Dispatch Consoles as SELECT and UN-SELECT audio channels. They contain ~ 6
watt audio amp and a substancial speaker, power by 12 volts. So I now have
plenty of audio and with the speakers spaced about 6 feet apart there is
noticable separation, and the AFX function is great when desired.

With the extra amplification and volume controls I can set the K3 volume
control for hot earphone level, yet turn down the external speaker levels.

I know it is overkill, but need to put the junk in use, or give it away :-)

I was fortunate to find a pair of Radio Shack Optimus speakers (5 inch
black cube) at a 2nd hand store for $5. They work great with my K3.
You may be able to find something similar if you shop around a bit.
These are non-amplified speakers and work quite well, no worries about
RF feedback or other problems that sometimes occur with amplified
varieties, and the K3 has more than adequate audio to drive these high
efficiency speakers.

Since the K3 tailors the audio response, there is not really a need for
communications speakers - the RX EQ will shape the audio to your
desires, so full range speakers will work great with the K3. For those
who do SWLing, the full range speakers may be better for those users
than communications speakers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - ERR BP1, XV3, AT3, IF1

2013-04-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jim,

It would appear that your K3 options are not being recognized at startup
- that would be some problem with the AUXBUS responses when the options
are polled.

If you have a saved configuration file, I would suggest doing an EEINIT
(see Parameter Initialization in the manual). After the EEINIT, do a
configuration restore from K3Utility. If you do not have that saved
configuration file, you will have to go through the calibration steps
manually and tell the K3 which options are installed after an EEINIT -
all menu settings will be restored to the defaults.

If the list of ERR messages includes the KPA3, that would be reason
enough to explain your intermittent power out issue.

If EEINIT does not fix it, an email to K3support is in order.

I have also been have having occasional trouble with no power out. This

Re: [Elecraft] ARR P50VDG Problems

FYI – this problem turned into being a bad KXV3A board. Works like a charm
now.

Hi Chad,

I have always been instructed to power the preamp from a SEPARATE 12 VDC
wall wart
power supply. There can be transients on the main power supply that can
cause voltage
spikes dangerous to the preamp. I would urge you to run the preamp on a
separate
little power supply and see if that helps. If it doesn't help, I would make
sure to
keep it set up that way anyway, as you find what additional problem you have
in the

K3 settings. GL and VY 73, Lance

Are you powering the ARR amp from the K3 or external PS?

My ARR pre-amp works fine - it is powered from external power, not from
the

K3 accessory power.

Hi Group,

Just recently hooked a Advanced Receiver Research P50VDG 6 meter preamp
to

my primary K3/10. Right off the bat I heard a internal relay start
chattering with the preamp on and RX ANT setting engage (of course this
is
all in receive mode). Turned everything off to re-evaluate connections
and

setup correct. I then put the K3 into attenuation mode to eliminate some
of the gain, no luck.

Consulted with some fellow hams and Elecraft, Elecraft thought the 24 dB
of gain might be too much and causing an overload on the front end (and
the relay chatter). To make a long story short, I tried the suggestions
and still having the same issue. So I took the P50VDG to my secondary
K3/10, works like a champ and as I would expect. Now I’m wondering what
is

different about my primary K3.

Short video of the noise which seems to be produced by the relay
chatter:

https://vimeo.com/63535627

Anyone experience this or have some suggestions? My primary K3/10 is at
my

remote station using the K3/0, my secondary is at home and backup.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 External Speakers

2013-04-22 Thread Wayne Burdick
An excellent alternative is to connect the headphone out of the KX3 directly to
an aux input on the car stereo (or even use an FM stereo modulator at the KX3
end and tune it in on the radio). This takes advantage of the big speakers in
the car, which are designed to exceed road noise. Of course if you want to play
the FM radio and the KX3 at the same time you'll need a different method.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - ERR BP1, XV3, AT3, IF1

2013-04-22 Thread Wayne Burdick
Jim,

These error messages point to an SPI bus communication problem, which in turn
is most likely due to an intermittent connection between the front panel and RF
board.

Remove the screws from the top and bottom of the front panel assembly, back the
assembly out about 1/8th to 1/4, then push it back in, making sure you keep
all of the connector pins mated.

If this makes things work again, you could have oxidation on the connector
pins. I would contact Gary or Howard in customer support to see if you might
need replacement connectors or just cleaning in order to fix the problem
permanently. Hopefully just re-seating the panel assembly will get you on the
air in the meantime.

 Jim,

It would appear that your K3 options are not being recognized at startup -
that would be some problem with the AUXBUS responses when the options are
 polled.

If you have a saved configuration file, I would suggest doing an EEINIT (see
Parameter Initialization in the manual). After the EEINIT, do a
configuration restore from K3Utility. If you do not have that saved
configuration file, you will have to go through the calibration steps
manually and tell the K3 which options are installed after an EEINIT - all
menu settings will be restored to the defaults.

If the list of ERR messages includes the KPA3, that would be reason enough to
explain your intermittent power out issue.

If EEINIT does not fix it, an email to K3support is in order.

are getting more often and mostly do not go away with power down and up

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 lithium battery charger

2013-04-22 Thread Mark Goldberg
What kind of Lithium Batteries? I have come to the conclusion that 4
LiFePO4 cells in series work well, as they stay between
14 and 12 Volts for most of their useful discharge, which allows full power
on the KX3. They should be charged on a balancing
charger at least some of the time to keep all of them at the same voltage.
I did not have good luck with paralleling them, so I
gave up on AAs as they have relatively low capacity and use bigger external
2.3 AH packs with 4 A123 batteries and a balance
connector. and a Thunder AC680 Charger. It connects via USB to your
computer and you can track the charge and the health of each cell.
There are lots of good chargers and some not so good ones. This one can
charge almost any kind of battery from either 12V or
AC power. Note that there are lots of counterfeit batteries out there. I
had to make up my own adapter cables as they don't all come
with the same connectors.

Spend some time researching these. I have had good and back luck with
different suppliers so I can't wholeheartedly recommend
anyone.
