[Elecraft] Calling Elecraft for Icom Support
Yes they do Icom support in a way just kidding 8). I had a question about using my KPA/KAT/500 with my IC-9100 that wasn't quite clear in the manual. That was using the 15 pin KPA500 to the IC-9100 13 pin DIN when also using the KAT500, was there any advantage in doing so, or even advisable to so. If you look at both the Elecraft manuals you will see what my foggy mind was seeing about both hookups. As with most things not related directly to a Elecraft radio but their other equipment using them I called Howard. After a couple of minutes talking with him for the first time he told me he didn't know (that was a first) and would have someone call me back. This is the embarrassing part I cannot remember his name but he explained every aspect of both hookups and the advantages of the one I was wanting to do. The detail and in depth use of the Icom using it's interface to control the KPA/KAT500 and what it did. My main concern had been with what and if this connection had on the KAT500 either good bad or no effect over the coax and key line. The answer it was all good do the DIN connection. Again great tech support and not someone reading from a book about your problem and never giving you a real answer. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Dick, Maybe a second (or third) monitor might be in order with the desktop across the multiple monitors. [Elecraft] k3 band up/down skips transverter band
I'm getting ready to go out roving for the first time with a K3 as the IF radio for my low bands (6-432). I've programmed in transverter bands 1-3, but for some reason the rig skips 144 and goes to 222 on band up (and similarly skips 144 and goes to 50 on the way back down). If I direct freq enter a 144MHz frequency it correctly selects xv1, it just won't go there with the band up/down. [Elecraft] KX3 Extremely Low Output Level
I have the KX3 I/Q output port into the Griffin IMic and then into the IPAD 2 via the camera adapter attachment running ISDR. The volume into powered speakers is dismal; so low as to be useless. Is there any way to raise the I/Q output level? What kind of powered speakers are needed? Thanks, and I hope any suggestions might interest other users. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Extremely Low Output Level
I think what he is trying to do is use iSDR on the iPad to hear the signals he is touching. The I/Q goes to the line in and the headphones go to the out on the iMic. What he needs to do is set the iMic to mic not line to make the signal the iPad sees stronger and adjust iSDR gain settings in the iPad settings app. When using the iMic with computers normally the settings should be line when used with the KX3 I/Q input. And yes when trying to listen directly off the KX3 phones should be where to hook up headphones or powered speakers. [Elecraft] KX3 and charging batteries (when, and why do they get hot?)
So I got a new, factory-assembled KX3 yesterday, with charger installed. I bought eight Rayovac Platinum NiMH 2000mA cells ready to go, inserted them, and ran the radio on batteries for just a few minutes, when I got the LO BATT message. So I started charging them, with timer on 12 hrs. After about two hours, they had gotten over 40° and charging halted until they had cooled down again. The next morning, charging was in its last 7 minutes, so it must have halted more often over the course. Is this normal? Or is my ingoing voltage too high, coming from a wall wart rated at 13-15.8V @ 960mA? Are the batteries (or one/some of them) defective? I bought them in two packs of four each. Were the batteries still way too full when I started charging? I didnt check voltage at the LOW BATT warning. When should such batteries get charged, at what voltage level? Other than that, I cannot say much because I am still working on an antenna. But the CW code practice setting works really nice :-). It even goes up to 700 Hz (not 600 as per manual). Thank you for your expert advice. 73, Arno __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [OT] Dayton 2013...
Hi all, I know it has been weeks since Dayton, but my wife and I were on vacation in Key West after Dayton and then I was hit with double shifts and a large backlog of enclosure orders upon our return. So I apologize for the lateness. I just wanted to pass along how amazing it was to work in the Elecraft booth once again this year. I would arrive at the arena just as it was opening up and see people setting up for the day sipping coffee and then turn the corner and see the Elecraft booth already 4 and 5 people deep. It is truly incredible the amount of traffic that comes through that booth every day of the show. I had lots of interest in my new line of cases and dust covers for the KX3. I received many great suggestions and I am actively ordering supplies to implement many of them. I'm meeting this week with a local sign company to square away ordering the matte black acrylic. I should be able to lock down pricing very shortly after the meeting and prototype some of the requested features. I was sold out of every dust cover I brought by noon on Friday and received a good number of orders for them while I was on vacation! The GemsProducts end plates and covers where a huge splash. It looks like a really great addition to the KX3 and it generated a lot of excitement. I may have to order a set for myself. I also received a number of requests for Rose Kopp's products with a number of hams looking for her and Ken in the booth. It is very interesting to see the number of ways Elecraft users want to carry their rigs around and all the of situations users envision using their rigs. I did finally break down and order a KX3! Not only will I enjoy using it this summer, but now I have a test unit to help prototype my products. It is supposed to be here next Monday - can't wait to build it up :-) I really want to thank Eric, Lerma and Lisa for their wonderful hospitality in the booth. It really was a whirlwind in there and we sold a lot of Elecraft product in those three days. They truly treated me like family and allowed me to participate in, and exude the much desired Elecraft experience and customer service. It was nice seeing many of the Elecraft engineers, tech service specialists and volunteers. I'm sure everyone was just as tired as I was at the end of the weekend ;-) All in all, it was a great weekend and I'm so happy to have met many of you at the show. I again thank Elecraft for the hospitality and all of you who gave me some great ideas and inspiration. I will have more info on the KX3 cases coming very soon. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and charging batteries (when, and why do they get hot?)
...must have halted more often over the course. Is this normal? Yes, with some concern. The short answer is I suspect you have a bad cell. The KXBC3 will attempt to keep the temperature at or below 40deg C, and sill suspend charging as required to allow cool down. It is a bit troubling that you didn't get more out of the first discharge cycle. It could be that they just sat on the shelf for a long time, but it could also be caused by a one or more defective cells. A defective cell may generate heat when charging, causing the KXBC3 to suspend charging. That can also happen with all good cells, but usually when ambient temperatures are high or during simultaneous transmission and charging. I recommend that you measure the cells' voltage individually. I know, it is a pain to split the case, but you may not have to take them out to check them. I haven't tried that. Just be very careful with the probe if you don't. When measured individually with a volt meter, they should all be within 0.1 volt or so of each other, and all of them should be above about 1v. Any cells below 0.9v should certainly be considered faulty. If NiMH cells are run much below 1.0v, they will most likely be damaged. Any cells that have damage to their plastic case should be discarded as well. A couple of weeks ago, I charged up a box of 14 used Energizer NiMH cells (2500maH) of unknown origin which had been given to me. I just checked them today, and 10 measured slightly higher than 1.3v each (excellent), one measured 1.28v (fairly good), and 3 measured less than .9v (BAD). Given this, 10 are good, 1 is a bit questionable but will probably level out with the others when charged a few times, and the 3 low voltages ones will be sent to the battery recycle bin. Were the batteries still way too full when I started charging? No. The KXBC3 charges with a constant current of approximately 200ma. At that current, you will not overcharge 2000aH (or larger) NiMH cells, and no damage will occur as long as the temperature is kept below 40deg C. So even if they were completely full, you could charge them with the KXBC3 for the full 16 hours without significant damage. That doesn't mean you should keep them on charge all the time. That would certainly shorten their life. I think the KXBC3 documentation mentions something about that. When should such batteries get charged, at what voltage level? Don't let them go below 1v per cell...about 8 volts total on the KX3 display...8.5V would be safer. Elecraft recommends setting the BAT MIN menu to 8.5 V (KX3 Owner's Manual Pg. 36) to give you some warning that you need to think about recharging. This is about 1.06V per cell. The KX3 will shut down at 8 V which is about 1V per cell, very near the absolute minimum for NiMH chemistry. There isn't much energy left below 1.06v per cell, so running them below that level really doesn't give you much extra operating time. Some folks set the BAT MIN to 9V to give them more warning and plenty of time to finish their QSO and shut the station down. By the way, the NiMH cells do not need to be fully discharged before starting the charge cycle. They do not have the strong memory that the older NiCad chemistry has. They can be touched up as you feel they need it. My Eneloope and Panisonic NiMH cells are very consistent, especially after several charges. The voltage of NiMH cells tend to self level (equal voltage of all cells within the battery of 8) when charged with the KXBC3. I don't have any personal experience with the Rayovac cells, but I think I recall that some folks had some problems with brand new ones right out of the box. I suggest you check the voltages of the cells individually, and get rid of the ones that measure below 1v and replace them with new cells of the same brand/capacity. Once you get a good set of cells, you will gain more confidence in them and in the KXBC3, and you will be able to tell where you are in their charge/discharge cycle by the KX3 displayed battery voltage. Hope this helps. I have tested using dummy load and tuned antennas, including dummy load with another impedance (100 ohm for example) so i can get SWR 1.5 readings. This problem is old, started few months after purchase the equipment. Would be a RF loop back issue?. Has anyone had the same problem? Setup is K3/100 with ATU. Problem is present with or without ATU enabled Edu YY4GMJ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] SVGA SCROLL
Are there any plans to be able to scroll up and down on the received decode on RTTY and PSK31. One could use up/down arrows or mouse I guess to go to the decode screen. That would sure help logging while using the P3 and SVGA on large screen. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and charging batteries (when, and why do they get hot?)
Mark, Thank you for this excellent response. This is exactly what I need: solid advice with rationale behind it. I checked a few things. All eight cells are now at 1.4V. When I turn the TRX on, the integrated meter shows 10.5 V now. I think this morning, when I checked after the full charge, it showed 11.6V. Not sure if that is a good sign after only having it on for a bit, tinkering. The BAT MIN was at the default setting of 10.0 V. I changed it to 8.5. Kent briefly contributed his opinion that a wall wart would not be good for charging the KX3 but did not give his reasons (I will not operate it off that adapter). What is your opinion, particularly regarding the wall charger's specs of 13 - 15.8V (@960mA). Is this peak voltage potentially too high? Other than that, I fail to construe even one reason why this adapter would not be fit to feed the 200mA charger or cause my heating issue. Thanks a bunch! 73, Arno Kg7bjm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] A Rob Sherwood's talk in Dayton
Very interesting, Gus. One of the most salient impressions that comes out is how little on-air testing seems to be done by most manufacturers. I guess that most rigs are made for phone ragchewers, and are probably fine for that purpose; but many of the faults that Rob Sherwood points out become obvious with a few hours of actual pileup or contest operation. How could a manufacturer imagine that a DXer would prefer to work a split pileup with a mouse-tuned radio, or send CW with a radio whose internal keyer spits out dits and dahs of random length? And the phase-noise dynamics that Rob describes -- they may not show up on a certain test, but they're clear enough when you use the radio, as are a variety of AGC problems. The Elecraft tradition started with rigs that would meet the requirements of a multi-op Field Day, and they have stuck with that viewpoint, to the benefit of their users. Meanwhile other radios I've owned or used have had irritating flaws that would have been glaringly apparent to the makers if they had actually tried them on the air before committing the design to production. Can anyone point out more about the K3 transmit audio fixes that Sherwood talked about? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and charging batteries (when, and why do they get hot?)
Mark, Having thought about this some more, I believe your point below is hitting the nail. My BAT MIN was still at the factory default of 10V, which obviously meant still lots of capacity. So the batteries were still quite full and thus got warm soon and repeatedly. Phew! I am not worried anymore. Thank you again! 73, Arno kg7bjm When should such batteries get charged, at what voltage level? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
