Re: [Elecraft] Updated KX3 audio-Morse user interface (for blind operators and mobile use)

2013-10-21 Thread Chris Johnson
The DISP key sends the Y of X.YYY.ZZZ on the display. Is there a way to read
the X and ZZZ parts too? You can get it to send X.YYY by changing bands, but
I'd prefer to be able to get a full readout without changing bands. The KX1
reads both sides of the VFO freq when the band button is pressed, which I
really like.

 Hi all,

The KX3, like the KX1, is usable by blind operators, thanks to an
audio-Morse interface that can be turned on/off in the menu. Sighted
operators may find the interface to be helpful, too, especially for
mobile operation, since it allows eyes-free use of the radio.

The KX3's implementation is not yet complete. But we just improved it
 by making the following changes:

 * Holding CWT switch on power-up turns on audio-Morse feedback and
sets speed to 20 WPM. (The other way to do this is via the SW TONE
menu entry, which allows you to set different code speeds. However,
menu entries themselves are not yet supported by the audio-Morse
 interface.)

 * Switch activation truncates any audio-Morse output already in
 progress.

 * 'R' substituted for '.' and 'T' substituted for ‘0’ to speed up
 frequency reports, etc.

 * SWR reported after TUNE or ATU TUNE (SWRnn.n).

 * The receiver is now muted during all audio-Morse output.

If you're interested in testing a field-test release of the KX3
firmware that includes the above changes, please contact me directly.

Really appreciate the detailed instructions! Still waiting for my 9000

I then removed all 8 batteries and checked their voltage (no load,
just
with an old Simpson VOM) and 4 batteries measured 1.2 V and the other
4
were at 0.0 V. I am not sure why they would be different, nor do I
  understand the BATT ERROR message.

[Others have explained BATT ERROR.]

It sounds like 4 of the batteries are weak and/or failed relative to the
other 4. Are they really the same kind and age?

I usually advise against buying batteries that are 1) not
ultra-low-discharge or 2) other than Maha/PowerEx or Sanyo.

First, label the 8 batteries with something that won't rub off. Also
label your new 8 batteries. Log the as-found voltages, and all of the
following data.

Eventually you will have weak/bad cells, and it's really hard to know
what's going on if they aren't labeled. With a set of 8, you will need
to get 8 new ones when you have one failure, but you will likely have a
number of cells that can be used in pairs. (I got 8 Maha Imedions in
2009, and have been using them nearly daily to power a handheld GPS
receiver. 6 are working fine, and 2 have failed, which seems ok given
their usage.)

When your C9000 arrives (that spares me from advising that you get one
:-), do a REFRESH-ANALYZE cycle on each battery. I use 1000 mA charge,
200 mA discharge, as a standard load over multiple devices. After
you've
done all 8, do them again. If some are weak (not 100 mA less, but like
700 mAh vs 2400 mAh), they are bad and should be recycled.

Also do refresh-analyze on the new batteries, 2 cycles. Probably they
will stabilize in capacity on the 2nd cycle, with values not that
different than the first. Keep this data so you can do it again every
year.

Feel free to send me the data offlist for interpretation.

2013-10-21 Thread Don Wilhelm

Chris,

I am not certain what you are referring to as a CAT5 coupler, so the
answer is maybe.
If the CAT5 coupler is an RS-232 to Ethernet converter, it should
work, but if it simply takes the RS-232 signals and simply connects them
directly to the wires of a CAT5 cable, there will be a limit to the
distance you can add before you encounter errors.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KXPA100 Control Cable Extension

2013-10-21 Thread Matt Zilmer
A CAT5 coupler is a double female junction that allows two spans of
CAT5 cable to be butted together to form a longer cable. In general,
these don't hold the longer cable within CAT5 specs, but that may not
be important in this application.

The total maximum cable span is probably a question for the KXPA
design staff or for support.

One thing to check that is fairly common is the 3.5mm serial jack which

the top.

Re: [Elecraft] CW Pitch Resolution

2013-10-21 Thread CR

The KWM-2 was IIRC 1500 Hz -- and my FPM-300 was 1750. *That* was too much, and
inspired a relay-switched front -panel RIT control. The design reason was
sound (no pun intended, for once) enough; the transmit IF filter had to
suppress harmonics of the keyed tone for a pure signal. This is something
that might help some digital-soundcard ops.

Also once upon a time -- so I recall -- some legal [half] wit at the FCC decreed that
tone-generated CW on the KWM-2 was A2 and NOT lawful in the CW segments.

Today it's images sent in data mode are SSTV. Give 'em an inch and they think
they're a ruler.

I'm just happy that the 1 kHz sidetone that was almost standard for many
years is no longer popular. All of my radio licensing CW tests at the FCC
offices used 1 kHz. That made my brain ache,

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 turn on Dual RX in menu

2013-10-21 Thread John Buck

Thank you Don for your courteous and detailed reply.
My problem turned out to be that RX SHFT was on.

I was getting unexpected results when I performed the procedure
according to the manual. I failed to recognize the RX SHFT response as
an error code. After I duplicated your suggestion (as per the book), I
knew I was doing it properly and was still missing something. I finally
realized that I had the RX SHFT parameter enabled on this band. Of
course, the book states that Dual RX and RX SHFT are incompatible and
the SHFT must be off. Corrected that and all is well. Brain lapse
corrected.

To those who could not resist RTFM type comments, I can only say that as
a long time early adopter of Elecraft I am fully aware of the necessity
to read the manual fully. I have done so several times. On the day I
sent my frustrated request for help, I had spent another two hours with
the manual and KX3 and continually misinterpreted the error message. I
was disappointed with the fact that I received several RTFM type
comments without any useful information pointing to the real error that
I knew I must be making repeatedly.

Recognizing how these RTFM comments made me feel makes me very glad that
I have refrained numerous times from making such comments when I thought
it probably was appropriate.

Again Don, I thank you for your ever courteous and accurate responses to
those of us who sometimes go down the wrong path and miss the obvious
even after reading the manual numerous times.
