Yes, I know at Dayton they promised early Fall.

[Elecraft] [KX3] IF Shift Status

2013-12-14 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
I've been playing around with Quisk on my Linux Mint 16 laptop and it
seems to work pretty well as a panadapter for my KX3 using the I/Q
outputs. I paired it up with a EMU 0202 I had laying around from my
LP-Pan install and with some tweaking of the config settings, I am able
to see 192kHz spectrum.

One of the problems I see with this setup is that Quisk does not track
the IF shifting that occurs under certain conditions i.e. AM mode shifts
11Khz, LSB or USB when switching in the Weaver demod raises or lowers
the IF 1.5kHz and then the RX Shift of 8kHz. Maybe there are more? Quisk
will stay on and report the VFO freq but the whole display is shifted
with the IF and you really aren't looking at the right spot anymore. Not
to mention that if I'm monitoring the audio through my laptop that it is
now tuned off the reported VFO and now looking at the shift.

I thought about playing around with the Quisk code and in particular the
config code for the rig interface to monitor the IF shift of the rig in
hopes of compensating for the offset. Quisk uses hamlib as the interface
to the rig and I can use the rigctl app in Linux to query the KX3 to
test commands.

My question is to those who might know, is there a command to figure out
what the IF shift is set at any given moment? I looked through the
programmer's reference but could not find what I need. I thought the IS
command might work but I think it reports the shift in the audio passband.

I think I read recently that HDSDR compensates for the AM shift so I
think it is doable. Or maybe they just monitor the mode and manually
shift the scope based on the mode. HDSDR looks very nice, but I'm trying
to stick with Linux for the time being for various reasons. Any insight
would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] Soldering Powerpoles

2013-12-14 Thread Art Bross

According to the government, nothing in aircraft can be soldered. The heat of
soldering changes the characteristic of the wire and makes it brittle. This
brittleness makes it more prone to break at the point it enters the connector.

I have crimped thousands of connectors and Powerpoles and have relied on
crimped connections over soldered connections since my work days where crimping
was required.

Powerpoles will hold fine if they are properly built with the proper sized wire
and pins.

Re: [Elecraft] Soldering Powerpoles

2013-12-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
More than the heat changing the wire, but if the wire flexes it will
eventually break at the point just beyond where the solder has wicked -
usually about an inch from the connector.
There is great potential for flexing due to vibration in an aircraft.
Not much flexing in a permanent installation in a ham shack. If there
is any concern about how much flexing will result (such as in a mobile
installation), the wire should be well supported for 3 or 4 inches from
any connector.

Crimped connections are fine if they are done with a *proper* crimping
tool and the size of the terminal is properly mated to the wire size.
The inexpensive 'one tool fits all' crimpers just do not do a good job,
and neither do pliers.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 problem

2013-12-14 Thread David Shoaf
Make sure that both the ACC1 and ACC2 plugs are fully seated in their jacks
on the KX3. Pull them out and reinsert them a few times to be sure they're
fully registered. Then, make sure that both ends of the RJ45 connectors are
fully seated until they snap in place. Pull them out and reinsert a few
times to be sure.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB PTT Switch

2013-12-14 Thread Bob

Hi Bryan,

  Well yes, here:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#pedal-switches/=pt2v00

I like the type E under foot switches. Industrial quality and
in many cases better that the far more expensive ham foot switches. I have
one on the K2 and on the K3 have 2 from a Y adapter. One on the floor and a
second on the desk. I plug in a Kenwood MC60 from the front and extended the
MIC headphone jacks from the back to use headsets. With the K3 all options
are available without getting behind it. I use PTT more than VOX

If you get one with the cord you will have to put a connector
on. I prefer getting a cable from like Sweetwater cutting off one end and
using the Quick Disconnect version of the switch.. Flexible for later. I reused
a switch that for years was with my TS-930.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB PTT Switch

2013-12-14 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi Bryan.

The best footswitches I have found have been either electric sewing machine
or Dictaphone (audio transcription) foot controllers, picked up for
$next-to-nothing in junk shops (or ask a sewing machine repair shop for a
cast-off). They are solidly built, the size of a paperback book, and heavy,
with long-life well made switch contacts. They completely outclass the
crappy little lightweight ones sold new into the ham market.

They work equally well with other, lesser, radios and headsets, and not just
on SSB either :-)

Tip: fit a 1/4 mono plus AND a phono plug on the cable, in parallel, to be
able to use the switch with radios or amps that have either type of socket.

[Elecraft] K144XV - More Advice Requested

2013-12-14 Thread Joel Black
After my initial email regarding the K144XV, I went to work trying to
sell stuff. As of today, I think I have enough to buy all I need for the
K144XV option. I have some questions though. I'll get to those in a minute.

As I stated before, the purchase of the K144XV is being done to both
consolidate and simplify my station. I have just sold an ID-880H D-STAR
radio which I used very little. I really don't much get on 2 m in the
house - mostly when I'm piddling around town or back and forth to work.
However, I do want the capability to work local repeaters. I have never
done any terrestrial 2 m CW / SSB (although I did my share of satellite
work in the late 90's and early 00's). I am interested in 2 m CW and
have antennas I could modify for that; however, my tower is only 35'
tall (about 10.5 m). I don't know if I'll be satisfied with that or not.
All of that said, here are my questions:

1. I will need the FM filter to work local 2 m FM repeaters. If memory
serves, the FM filter will also allow AM transmission. Is this correct
or am I mistaken?

2. For 2 m SSB / CW work, I will need the K144RFLK (or it's at least
recommended), correct? Does the K144RFLK lock to the standard TCXO or
will I need the super-stable TCXO (KTCXO3-1) also?

3. I have a 2 m preamp left over from my satellite days (it's an Icom
AG-35 that will allow transmit through). Is there a way to turn the
preamp on from the K3 without having to install a bias-T and switch?

I want to get as much bang for my buck as possible. I don't want to
spend all this money and only be able to work 2 m FM with very limited 2
m CW.

At the risk of expanding my station (something I do *not* want to do), I
have limited access to an FT-847 that I could try before I buy. I could
actually buy it cheaper than all that I think I need for the K144XV. The
FT-847 does not have a very good HF transceiver, but the the VHF/UHF
part is great.

I appreciate all advice or suggestions. Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 / KPA ALC problem. *** Solved ***

2013-12-14 Thread Chris Kimball
I added 19.5 ft of RG-58 coax formed into a 6 inch diameter coil between the
rig and the LDG 1:1 balun. Meter results on ALC or RF for the dummy load
and for the antenna are now the same.

Steps to the solution:

1. Get the transmitting BFO aligned with the built-in SSB filter in R and
R-reversed modes.

2. Fix the R98 gain problems with the standard mod .

3. Added 0.01 uf capacitor on the VRFDET line in the shell of the connector
between the K2 and the KPA/KAT.

4. Changed the RF path length from the K2 to the balun, providing a choke
balun at the same time.

Thanks to all that assisted in this venture!
