Hi Dave,
From personal experience, I would recommend the Yamaha
CM500 headset as a good one for this application, very sensitive high
output electret mic.

on what she can comfortable wear. Some givens. A professional

Most pro headworn mics do NOT come with headphones. Professional
headworn microphones are used by performers, preachers, exercise

Depending on what she can wear and/or tolerate, she can choose from
separate headphones and a headworn mic, or those with a boom mic
attached. Sennheiser makes a very nice boom headset, but it's fairly
heavy (rather like Yamaha CM500). I've not worn one of them, but
Sennheiser is a great company and I suspect they are quite comfortable.
They're not cheap.

There's another interesting option. Tascam, a major mfr of semi-pro
audio gear, now makes some rather nice USB audio interfaces that have
inputs for both balanced and unbalanced mics and headphone outputs.
They would work well with a low cost set like the CM500, and also with
the Sennheiser, because it provides phantom power for pro mics. They do
NOT provide bias for unbalanced mics (like the CM500).

Yet another option. Virtually any unbalanced mic can be used with a pro
wireless mic system, and these systems DO provide bias for electret
mics. The headphones, or in-ear phones, could be wired, or could be used
with a wireless receiving system. Several companies make them, including
Shure and Comtek. Those used by performers are called in-ear monitors
and those used by broadcasters are called IFB systems (that's what you
see newcasters wearing).

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] receive on ssb--DSP problem?

2013-12-17 Thread Scott Monks

Hi all;
It has been a week or so since my question but have not had time to give
an update.
First, I received several good suggestions (Wayne/N6KR suggested that check
the settings for the filters, and Brian/K3KO mentioned that it might be a
squelch problem), unfortunately nothing helped, and in searching each parameter
I found even more rare behaviors!  My last resort was to load up a previous
saved configuration (also suggested by Olaf/LA3RK).  I loaded my last config
file--and everything worked great!  I only had to return the Dual Passband
setting and the CW pitch to where I had them and I was content!

I live in a not-so-good location for ham radio (mountains on all sides!),
but even with time off to help around the house to get things ready for the
holidays I still had time to make 112 contacts during the 10m contest to get
Hidalgo at least activated!

Thanks for all of the advice.  It is good to belong to a group to which you
can turn to the members for help, especially here where there are so few clubs!
When Santa delivers my KAT500 I am sure I will have othere questions--hi, hi!

73, good DX, and great holidays!

[Elecraft] K3 and phasing noise cancelling systems

2013-12-17 Thread Gary Smith
I've been having terrible RFI issues on the low bands, sometimes its
up to 10M but usually its from 40M down with 160M being the most
affected. I've become aware of the MFJ and DXEngineering phasing
noise cancelling systems and how well they work to null out
interference. I'm leaning toward the DXEngineering NCC-1 although the
price is very high and that is holding me back from buying one right
now.

I have Amtrak 100' from my Inv-L transmit and HI-Z Triangular
antennas and Amtrak's 25KV arcing is killing me on the low bands. I'm
wondering if anyone here has a steerable antenna system similar to
the HI-Z that they use for Rx with their sub receiver and... one of
the MFJ or DXE phasing/noise cancelling systems.

If so, how do you have your K3 set up to handle the different systems
and how do you connect your noise cancelling unit so as to still
steer your Rx antenna?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and phasing noise cancelling systems

2013-12-17 Thread Jim Wiley
I have a NCC-1, and it works well. My antennas are a vertical-firing
cubical quad for 75 meters (NVIS antenna) and a low 80-meter dipole
(noise sense antenna). I do not have a steerable array. Keep in mind
that the noise cancelling unit will null out noise from ONE direction
only. If you have multiple noise sources with signals coming in from
different directions, you may be disappointed. It does a bang-up job on
the neighbor's plasma-screen TV.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and phasing noise cancelling systems

2013-12-17 Thread David Gilbert

A couple of years ago I proposed that Elecraft modify the firmware in
the K3 to allow the phase of the local oscillator in either the main
receiver or the subreceiver to be adjusted in some way (possibly by
using a couple of front panel buttons to be used as increment/decrement
controls). That would allow anyone with both receivers to put the K3
into diversity mode and sum the signals from two different antennas in
order to null directional interference (noise or QRM). It would also
allow anyone with separately fed stacked antennas to play around with
arrival angles. The absolute phase angles would be indeterminate and
the absolute phase would vary for every frequency, but nulling at every
frequency would still be possible. The nulling could even be done at
the audio output since relative phase is preserved in the frequency
conversion process, but I assume that it would be more practical to do
it where the the majority of the DSP is already being handled ... i.e.,
at IF.

At the time somebody at Elecraft agreed it should theoretically possible
and might be worth pursuing, but nothing ever came of it. In any case,
I've always felt that it was a nice opportunity being squandered. I
think it would be a nice plus for the K3 to be able to do it's own
spatial discrimination.

Hi Dave and all,
I agree the above should be achievable I have seen such a
scheme implemented wr to professional OTHR systems in both Tx Rx.

It should not be too hard on the K3 Rx side with 2
identical Rx paths phase coherence in bothe local oscillators.

I believe it is technically well worth pursueing.
